Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 9)
Episode 9.1 “A Place of Particular Concern” has Weiss admitting to what happened on the bridge. She doesn’t outright say Penny was killed by Jaune. Instead, she says that Jaune helped as best he could, and that Penny sacrificed herself. This is HUGE because she’s showing no resentment for his actions, and recognizes he was put into a position that was going to have an unfavorable outcome.
Episode 9.3 “Rude, Red, Royal,” nothing officially between the two, but Jaune’s nickname of Snow Angel for Weiss becomes literal when she summons up a pair of Nevermore wings.
Episode 9.4 “A Cat Most Curious,” again nothing official, but when Weiss was complaining about why they could not have teamed up with other Ever After characters like the Lively Carpenter or the Rusted Knight, she mentions that the knight is handsome. While she is not directly referencing Jaune in this case, the running theory in the FNDM is that Jaune will fill in the role of the Rusted Knight, and so this will be an interesting take. Will she still think the Rusted Knight is handsome if he does in fact turn out to be Jaune?
Episode 9.6 “Confessions Within Cumulonimbus Clouds” Weiss joins in the group hug with Jaune. When the girls are asking him questions, Yang begins the question of “And when did you get so…” Weiss hops in close to the camera and finishes with “mature.” This causes her to heavily blush when she gets stares from her teammates, especially Yang’s. Since Jaune later confirms that he’s the Rusted Knight from Alyx’s story, Weiss was in fact indirectly referring to Jaune as handsome. After they hear Jaune’s story, Weiss is the first to apologize for the struggles he went through. When later found by the Curious Cat, Weiss (and Ruby) step forward to confront the cat, putting themselves on the front line in front of Jaune.
Tumblr media
Episode 9.7 “The Perils of Paper Houses” has Weiss first out of the house after Jaune, and is the one asking what’s going on. When Team RWBY and Jaune are strategizing, Weiss sits down next to him. If Ruby wasn’t in her downward spiral, she would have been the one sitting next to Jaune helping to strategize, but instead Weiss takes her place next to Jaune. When Jaune returns from saddling up Juniper, he comes back in time to hear Weiss say “he’s not all there,” which upsets him. When he’s confronted by the team and his reasonings for not going to the tree or allowing the Paper Pleasers to go to the tree, it’s Weiss who is challenging him on why he cares about the village and it’s to her question that we get his response about protecting them. When the Jabberwalkers attack, Jaune and Weiss team up in the fight. Despite their earlier clash and the current fight, Jaune takes some time to thank Weiss for the assistance when she summoned her Arma Gigas to destroy one of Neo’s Jabberwalkers (and gets reminded by Yang to stay focused). When his sword is knocked away, Weiss grabs it and throws it back to him, which he then knocks into a Jabberwalker. After the dam breaks on the Paper Pleasers’ village, Weiss joins in on comforting a distraught Jaune. After Jaune unloads on Ruby, Weiss is the one that approaches him and calls his name, which snaps him out of his anger. When Jaune speaks about being alone on the bridge and being the only one, while Blake and Yang are clearly upset seeing him so upset, Weiss is the only one who was there and knows exactly what he means, and her face clearly shows it. Maybe it's a model error, but when Ruby says shut up and we get a look at the group again, Weiss’ hand is raised and poised like it was reaching out to Jaune. Was she going to comfort him? Wipe his tears away? Was something supposed to happen but Ruby cut it off?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 9.8 “Tea Amidst Terrible Trouble” has very little in terms of content unless you’re squinting. Weiss is seen standing next to Jaune in several shots inside of Neo’s house, and in one shot it even looks like Jaune is stepping in front of Weiss to take a hit from the Cat. Where the squinting comes in is that when it shows the view from behind, it doesn’t reflect this at all. I don’t know if this is just overreach or positioning mistakes (normally I wouldn’t think this, but episode nine had the girls teleporting from one frame to the other, so honestly anything is possible at this point), but in one frame it looks like he's going to take a majority of the hit for Weiss (like Blake did for Yang) and the next frame he’s barely even near her. Either way, I really liked how Weiss and Jaune looked standing next to each other in this episode.
Tumblr media
Episode 9.9 “A Tale Involving a Tree” Weiss is sitting behind Jaune on Juniper and had her arms wrapped around him. When J+WBY return to the Paper Pleaser’s village and Jaune is distressed, Weiss walks over and places a comforting hand on his back, assuring him that whatever he can’t understand can be figured out. When Jaune has an epiphany that ascension wasn’t actually that bad and he was being selfish so that he could be the hero (because he can’t let go of all the people he couldn’t save), Weiss is the one to lift his spirts, assuring him that even the best huntsmen have lost, but they were still good. Hearing this reassurance from her has Jaune tear up and is only able to say her name. Weiss then hugs him, being the one who initiates it (Blake and Yang jump in after). When the hug is broken, Weiss and Jaune still hold each other in a rather intimate manner (the only other time we’ve seen him hold her waist is when he was supporting her off the bridge). It’s only Weiss who he keeps hold of; he doesn’t try to hold Blake’s hand or put an arm around her. While I can’t definitively prove it, it looks to me that he keeps his eyes on her while ending the hug, which would parallel him being unable to take his eyes off of Weiss back in Volume 6, Episode 7 (and even there, when he was hugging Blake, he kept his arm around her shoulders and dropped connection with her after the hug). When J+WBY decide to protect Wooden!Ruby from Curious Cat, Jaune and Weiss stand next to each other. During the fight, Weiss hears Jaune cry out from a strike by Illusion!Pyrrha, almost a call back to Volume 5, Episode 11 when Jaune heard Weiss cry out in her battle with Vernal. She tries to help him by firing a fireball at Curious Cat, but it ends up striking Jaune instead and sends him over the edge of their platform. When Weiss sees this, she lets out a “No!” as he goes over the edge while on fire.

Episode 9.10 “Of Solitude and Self” has small moments because this is the big finale that needs to focus on wrapping up the volume. The most important thing is how comfortable the two are around each other. The two stand next to each other and hold hands before they step through the door. When Jaune is reverted back to his youthful age and looks, she’s the one giggling when Jaune realizes his voice went back up in octaves (everyone else is remaining smiling). Jaune follows Weiss through the portal leading to Vacuo, and the two are seen standing next to each other overlooking Shade Academy.

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 2)
Episode 2.2 “Welcome to Beacon” has Jaune approaching the table where Team RWBY is playing Remnant: The Game. After Ruby mentions that it is a four player game, Jaune asks Weiss to play with her hand, which she refuses. Jaune starts the trend of calling Weiss “Ice Queen,” which is a nickname that sticks with her the whole volume. He retreats after almost accidentally revealing Blake’s true identity but is still close enough to see and hear Neptune and Weiss flirt, being especially offended when Neptune refers to Weiss as “snow angel.”
Tumblr media
Episode 2.3 “A Minor Hiccup” begins with Jaune trying to ask Weiss on a date. She ignores him, watching the clock countdown until the end of class. When the bell goes off, Weiss leaves, answering Jaune’s earlier questions with a solid rejection. Dejected, Jaune collapses onto his desk, but Yang walks past and gives him a friendly rub on the back of his head, reassuring him that he’ll get Weiss to agree to a date “one day.” This shows some support for Jaune’s pursuits from Yang, especially since she’s encouraging him to not give up.
Tumblr media
Episode 2.5 “Extracurricular” has Jaune coming to Weiss’ dorm room with a guitar in hand to ask her to the dance in a musical fashion. The whole thing is played for laughs, but Jaune probably chose this method because he knows that Weiss is a singer, and he thought that she may appreciate his attempt. She doesn’t, and still rejects him, slamming the door in his face for the second time that night (she did so earlier when she opened the door to find him with the guitar). Yang, who had watched the whole exchange, tells her that what she did right there is why she’s referred to as an Ice Queen. It’s at this point in the series that we learn why Weiss has no interest in Jaune: “All my life, boys have only cared about the perks of my last name.” In Weiss’ mind, she believes that Jaune is flirting with her to take advantage of her family name. It’s because of these reasons that she continues to shoot Jaune down.
Tumblr media
Episode 2.6 “Burning the Candle” is where we see Jaune’s reasons for pursuing Weiss. He enlists Ren’s help on girl advice and ends up telling Ren his feelings for Weiss: “I'm completely head-over-heels for her, and she won't even give me a chance. She's cold, but she's also incredible. She's smart, and graceful, and talented. I mean, have you heard her sing? I-I just wish she’d take me seriously, y'know? I wish I could tell her how I feel without messing it all up.” This is incredibly heartfelt and is an obvious moment of vulnerability for Jaune. Pyrrha, despite having obvious feelings for Jaune, comes in with the advice for him to stop with the pick -up lines and to just tell her the truth. Jaune takes to this new idea happily and rushes off to find Weiss. He’s prepared to ask her again, bringing with him a flower, but he catches her asking Neptune to the dance, which leaves him heartbroken. He leaves the scene before he hears Neptune’s answer.
Tumblr media
Episode 2.7 “Dance Dance Infiltration” is the turning point in their relationship. Up till now, Weiss believes Jaune is just after her for her name, while we as an audience know that Jaune genuinely likes her. While Jaune and Ruby are at the drinks table, Ruby sympathizes with Jaune for things not working out with Weiss, and then clarifies to the boy - since he thought Weiss came with Neptune - that Weiss came to the dance alone. He catches sight of her attempting to fix a flower and looking hurt in Neptune’s direction, who is clearly having a fun time joking around with some students. Furious on her behalf, Jaune goes to confront Neptune on his actions. He diverts attention when a forlorn Pyrrha crosses his path, and so he goes to check on her. He learns that Pyrrha was hoping he’d ask her to the dance, and she reveals that she likes him. Jaune is shocked, and almost goes after her, but he’s interrupted by Neptune, who unwittingly comes to the balcony Pyrrha and Jaune had been using. Neptune starts a friendly conversation, but when he mentions the “cute girls” at the dance, Jaune gets infuriated and lectures him about Weiss, demanding to know if Neptune ever thought of the feelings of the girls he was hitting on and on why he would turn down Weiss. Neptune shamefully admits that he doesn’t know how to dance, which surprises Jaune. Neptune offers to give up on Weiss, but when Jaune asks him about his feelings for her, and Neptune honestly admits that he thinks she’s cool, Jaune gives him some advice that Pyrrha gave him. Even though Jaune has feelings for Weiss, he recognizes that she would rather prefer Neptune, and gives him the push to go and approach her. Neptune does as Jaune advised and goes talk to Weiss. When Weiss asks what changed his mind, Neptune indicates to Jaune, who at this point in the episode has changed into a dress and is dancing with Pyrrha (he had made a bet that if she didn’t get a date, he’d wear a dress). He tells her that she has good friends, and Weiss is clearly surprised but touched. For all of Volume 1 and half of Volume 2, she thought he was only interested in her name, but this moment proved her wrong, and it’s here that they can begin having an actual friendship.

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 1)
To begin our tale of their relationship evolution, we must begin from Volume 1. Episode 1.03 “The Shining Beacon, Pt. 2” had the two “meetings.” Weiss, sarcastically, pointed to Jaune while talking about “cute boys,” something Jaune perks up at. He attempts to flirt with her, but she is not in the mood. Not a good start for this relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 1.04 “The First Step” Jaune interrupts a discussion between Pyrrha and Weiss, flirting with the latter girl. Weiss shows annoyance at being flirted with, and it’s in this episode that Jaune drops his nickname for the girl “Snow Angel.” Although he flirts with Pyrrha a bit, Jaune’s main focus is Weiss, especially trying to get on the same team as her. Their discussion ends with Pyrrha throwing a spear at him that lodges him to the wall. A discussion with Yang seconds later reveals that he was following his father’s footsteps about “all women look for is confidence.” This indicates his good intentions, if only a bit wayward.
Tumblr media
Episode 1.05 “The First Step, Pt. 2” has a brief moment between the two. While Weiss is walking away from Ruby, annoyed to be her partner under Ozpin’s rule of the first person you make eye contact with is your partner for the duration of your time at Beacon Academy, she comes across Jaune who is stuck to a tree thanks to Pyrrha. He waves at her weakly, but she turns on her heel and returns to Ruby, accepting the girl as the lesser of two evils.
Tumblr media
Episode 1.08 “Players and Pieces” is when the two get another moment together. As Weiss falls from the sky after jumping off a Nevermore, Jaune sees his opportunity and leaps from his place in the tree, catching her mid-air. He attempts for a suave, “Just dropping in?”, but, in Looney Tunes style, the two fall from the sky, Weiss landing on Jaune with a mocking, “My hero.”
Tumblr media
Episode 1.10 “The Badge and the Burden, Pt. 2” has another very brief moment between the two. After Weiss defeats the Boarbatusk in class and stalks away angrily, Jaune makes a comment about what is up with her. This could just be Miles trying to get Jaune in every episode (he joked about this in Volume 1’s director commentary), or it can be seen as Jaune interested in Weiss’ state of mind.
Tumblr media
Episode 1.14 “Forever Fall, Pt. 2” has Weiss preparing to intervene in a fight between Jaune and an Ursa Major until Pyrrha stops her. Whether Weiss was worried for Jaune’s safety or just wanted to kill the Grimm is up for debate, but I like to think she was worried about Jaune dying (especially because she doesn’t hold a high opinion on his fighting capabilities).

Thank You!
I wanted to say thank you to everyone. This project started as something personal, a way for me to track the progress of Weiss and Jaune in their relationship as the series went on. I consider it among the few relationships that was allowed to grow organically. I was nervous about posting it, but the reception that the series received was better than I could ever think and so I want to say thank you. You all are amazing.
Hopefully good things will come to our White Knight in Volume 9. Fingers crossed!

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 7)
Episode 7.1 “The Greatest Kingdom” has a brief, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. While the group is at Pietro’s pharmacy, Pietro identifies Weiss, which surprises her since she’s never met him before (though she is a bit of a public figure as the Schnee heiress, so it shouldn’t have been that big a surprise). She takes a step back, an action that is mimicked by Jaune, who she is standing nearby.
Tumblr media
Episode 7.4 “Pomp and Circumstance” has another brief moment for the two. While Qrow has a talk with Ruby, Weiss can be seen having a conversation with Jaune and Ren. She’s seen standing next to him when the newly minted Hunters and Huntresses are shown the mission board, showing that she’s more comfortable in his presence.
Tumblr media
Episode 7.6 “A Night Off” has a callback to Volume 2. Blake and Yang are going clubbing with FNKI and Ruby, Ren and Nora go to Robyn’s victory party, leaving Weiss with one of three options: go with Blake and Yang, go with Ruby, Ren, and Nora, or stay at the academy. None of the options are appealing to her. She has a dislike of Robyn Hill, so she doesn’t want to go to the party and even expresses annoyance that the three are going. She also doesn’t want to go clubbing. Aside from the fact night clubs might not be Weiss’ scene, she’s also annoyed by Blake and Yang’s antics. Jaune and Oscar appear at the doorway, and Jaune asks if anyone wants to go see a movie with him and Oscar. Jaune hasn’t even finished his question before Weiss replies with a “yup!” and goes with them, not even hesitating. This is a callback to Volume 2 when Jaune asked Weiss to the movies, which she turned him down for. While it could be seen as Weiss having no other options, she is still willing to go to the movies with him (and Oscar).
Tumblr media
Episode 7.8 “Cordially Invited” has the group along with Ironwood, Winter, Penny, and the Ace Ops at the Schnee Mansion. While Weiss is being held up by her brother Whitley, Jaune comes up with a plan to get Whitley’s attention off of Weiss so that she could do some snooping. It’s interesting to note that it’s Jaune who comes up with this and not Ruby.

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 8)
Episode 8.11 “Risk” has a small set of moments toward the end. Jaune had been amplifying Weiss’ aura, but was called away to do the same for Penny. As he leaves, Weiss is seen staring at him in worry. Later, when he’s able to help Penny overcome her virus program, the team rushes over to express their relief. Weiss is the only one in the group who sends a proud look at Jaune, even giving him a touch on the shoulder. Later, Weiss has tears in her eyes that she wipes away, and Jaune sends her an affectionate look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 8.14 “The Final Word” has the two team up with Penny to take on Cinder after Yang, Blake, Ruby and Neo fell to the void, and with Emerald, Ren, Nora, and Oscar in Vacuo. When Cinder’s arm freaks out and she mentions “she’s back,” Jaune and Weiss shared a surprised look with each other, knowing she’s referring to Salem. Later, when newly minted winter maiden Winter enters the fight against Cinder, Jaune is seen helping an injured Weiss off the battlefield. Cinder spots them making their escape to the portal and fires off a blast. Jaune hears its approach and tries to block it, but it’s too powerful and sends the two falling back (notably, Jaune has his arm extended out so that if they were to be pushed back more, Jaune’s arm would at least cushion Weiss’ landing), to which Cinder has another blast ready. Jaune’s aura breaks and he falls to the side, but Weiss falls off completely into the void. When Jaune sees a depressed Winter land on the bridge and doesn’t see Weiss, he has a distressed look on his face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is the last bit until we see what happens in Volume 9. Will they interact? Will they not? I don’t know where this relationship is going, but hopefully it doesn’t take a nosedive after all the uphill climbing it’s done.
Fingers crossed for good things to happen in Volume 9.

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Start)
White Knight, the pairing name for RWBY’s characters Weiss Schnee (White) and Jaune Arc (Knight). Not a popular pairing, but my personal favorite coupling out of the show. A requirement I hold for all my favorite couples is that they must be friends first and foremost, and over the course of the series, we see what started out as a one-sided attraction eventually reach a level of friendship that was not perceived possible at the start of the series.
I’ll be posting their interactions and evolution daily leading up to the release of Volume 9. The only volume that won’t be present is Volume 4, and that’s because the two were on separate continents.
Please join me as we explore their relationship.

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 6)
Episode 6.1 “Argus Limited” has a very brief moment. When coming up with a plan, Ruby suggests that Ren covers the train in his semblance, to keep the passengers safe from the Grimm. While Ren expresses doubt, Ruby mentions that he could use Jaune’s help, with Weiss adding “He could amplify your Aura!” It shows that her opinion of him is continuing to change for the better, with her now having confidence in his semblance. This of course makes sense since she had been on the receiving end of his abilities not too long ago.
Episode 6.7 “The Grim Reaper” has Teams RWBY, Oscar, Qrow & Maria meeting back up with Team JN_R. Both teams are ecstatic to see each other. Blake goes to hug Jaune, and Weiss is on her heels, coming over to talk to Jaune. While he had been hugging Blake, his eyes had been closed. He opened them and focused on Weiss, giving her a smile. While she could have approached Ren or Nora, she chose to speak with Jaune instead.
Also look at that smile Blake gives Jaune. She is so shipping them.
Tumblr media
Episode 6.8 “Dead End” during a fight in which Team JN_R discovers the truth behind Salem, Jaune explodes in anger and advances on Oscar. As he’s approaching, Weiss attempts to defend Oscar. In comparison to early volumes, Weiss isn’t furious. Instead, she sounds desperate. She doesn’t even try to actually fight him, and almost looks like she was simply trying to appeal to him.
Tumblr media
Episode 6.12 “Seeing Red” after Weiss uses her glyphs to slow Ruby’s fall, she collapses out of exhaustion. Immediately Jaune drops to her side, checking on her. When we see them next, Jaune is still kneeling next to her, having a hand on her back to keep her steady while she catches her breath.

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 5)
Episode 5.7 “Rest and Resolutions” has ¾ of Team RWBY and the remainder of Team JN_R having a happy reunion. Weiss and Jaune are shown to be sitting next to each other and eating, something that would be inconceivable back in Volume 1. This shows that Weiss is clearly comfortable sitting next to him. He’s invested in her story about what she dealt with in Atlas (like summoning a Boarbatusk accidentally), and she’s invested in his story about when they lost the map. Weiss is even wearing a smile as he tells it, and doesn’t say anything mocking or degrading; she’s happy to see all her friends, including him. When Jaune is taking all the dirty dishes to the kitchen, commenting about how he might be sick, Yang refers to him by his nickname “Vomit Boy.” This gets Weiss giggling, and Nora refers to her as her old nickname, Ice Queen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 5.11 “The More the Merrier” has the team of RW_Y, JN_R, Oscar and Qrow fighting against Cinder’s faction, which includes Lionheart, Raven, Vernal, Mercury, Emerald, and Hazel. The group splits up to take on the baddies, and Weiss ends up facing off with Vernal. Vernal is clearly more skilled than Weiss, continuously impeding the girl’s chances to summon her Arma Gigas. Vernal is able to deplete Weiss’ aura, and the girl cries out from the pain, which Jaune notices and is clearly worried about. Cinder takes this moment to mock him, which angers him. When Cinder realizes Jaune has a death wish and doesn’t actually care about dying, so long as it will save his friends, she decides to be a bitch and sends a javelin (stylized like Pyrrha’s Milo, just to be extra bitchy) and chucks it at an unsuspecting Weiss, despite Jaune’s pleas. Before the episode ends, we see tears falling down his eyes, because this is the second time Jaune has been unable to protect someone he cares about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 5.12 “Vault of the Spring Maiden” immediately picks up where the prior episode left off. Jaune, forgetting his fight with Cinder, rushes to Weiss’ side, picking her up so he can inspect her injury. He is clearly devastated and terrified of her dying, pleading: “No, it wasn’t supposed to be like this! Please! We can’t lose anyone else.” His desperation awakens his semblance, which transfers his aura to hers and powers it up, letting her aura heal the injury. When he realizes he has a chance to save her, he’s happy and focuses on nothing but that task.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 5.13 “Downfall” has Jaune continuing to heal Weiss, and is ecstatic when she stirs. They have a light banter, and it’s clear Jaune is relieved that she is going to make it. A little while later, Weiss is well enough to sit up, and tells Jaune to keep up whatever he is doing. When Weiss is fully healed again, she rejoins the fight, summoning a Queen Lancer to do battle with Cinder’s faction. Jaune, from a distance, smiles happily, glad to see her well, alive and participating in the fight.

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 3)
Episode 3.1 “Round One” has a nice moment where Teams RWBY and JNPR share a meal together at the festival after RWBY’s win. While Nora is listing out their team’s strengths, she doesn’t list anything for Jaune, implying he’s the weak link to the team. It should be noted that Weiss, who didn’t have much faith in Jaune’s abilities in Volume 1, doesn’t make a joke at Jaune’s expense.
Episode 3.2 “New Challengers” has Team JNPR up against Team BRNZ. Jaune, thanks to Pyrrha’s extra training, is doing well in the fight. Weiss, begrudgingly, compliments him, saying he’s “certainly improved.” Considering their rocky relationship at the start of the show, this compliment hints that Weiss is looking at him in a better light.
Episode 3.5 “Never Miss a Beat” has Yang and Weiss going up against Flynt and Neon from Team FNKI. While Weiss is fighting Flynt, the latter activates his semblance, which has four versions of himself combining their wave of noise pushing Weiss back. The next shot is a reaction shot of Jaune muttering in amazement “Whoa.” It’s an interesting choice for the writers/animators to have Jaune react to what happened to Weiss instead of Ruby or Blake, her teammates watching from the stands, or Neptune, the boy she liked (well, except in “New Challengers” when he began flirting with the girls on Team NDGO).
Tumblr media
Episode 3.12 “End of the Beginning” has Jaune calling Weiss’ scroll while she and Ruby are running through Beacon, looking for him and Pyrrha. He probably tried to call Ruby’s scroll but it was damaged, so he called Weiss next. When she answers his call, she is clearly concerned about him, asking where he’s at. While Jaune is trying to tell her about Pyrrha going after Cinder, Weiss continuously repeats her question, asking where he’s at and if he’s okay. When he throws his scroll and breaks it, she is caught off guard by the loss in connection, and is clearly, frantically concerned for him. This is the first time, definitively, that she is shown to be worried about Jaune.
