A Formula E racer’s 400bhp one-off Audi A1 is wild
Tumblr media
This is a 400bhp Audi A1 with a wide-body kit, and it is at this point that you don’t just suspend your belief from a very large height, more throw it into the sea. W, T, and indeed, F. It is the work of Abt; specifically, Daniel Abt, son of the founder of the eponymous tuning house. Daniel (who races for Audi’s Formula E team), initiated the entire project that, we’re told, required Abt’s “entire gamut of technical expertise”. Including beefing up that engine to stratospheric heights. And by beefing up, we of course mean binning it and fitting a different 2.0-litre TFSI petrol four-cylinder up front. A 2.0-litre TFSI from an Audi TT Cup racer, no less. This immediately boosted power to 310bhp – 340bhp with overboost – and initiated many hours of reprogramming and coding the ECU to achieve a nice, full 400bhp total. “I believe that’s more than sufficient for such a banger right there,” Daniel explains in this video. We are inclined to agree. There’s also a full stainless steel exhaust system with twin 114mm pipes and carbon tails. An “awesome” sound is promised. Again, we do not dispute this. Daniel slotted in H&R suspension springs, special Michelin tyres, and gave the interior a once-over with lots of special materials like Alcantara and leather, and a deleted rear bench. And a roll cage. The outside too, is rather special. Erik Aleksanjan was the designer responsible for the geometric pattern applied to this one-off A1; Erik also did Jon Olsson’s RS6. The wide-body kit is described as ‘free-standing’: the arches are phatter, the front, more diffuser-y, the back, filled with carbon wing. The passenger side of the car is red, while the drivers’ side is matt black. The wheels are 19in forged items with a gold ‘aero ring’ and leaf-shutter looks, in order to remind people that yes, Daniel does race a Formula E car. “It was the biggest project of 2019 which demanded a great deal of us,” explains Daniel. We won’t demand a great deal from you, other than to explain your feelings on this car in the space below. Read the full article

Seized Veneno Roadster is most expensive Lambo ever
Tumblr media
A curiously specified Lamborghini Veneno Roadster has supposedly become the most expensive Lamborghini ever sold at auction, after an anonymous buyer paid £6,768,709 for it at a Bonhams auction in Switzerland. Not bad, given it was estimated to sell for ‘just’ £4.5million. The Veneno was one of 25 cars seized by Swiss authorities back in 2016 as part of an investigation into Teodoro Nguema Obiang (look closely and you’ll see his initials inscribed on the Lambo’s doors and bonnet) - Vice President of the impoverished but oil-rich Equatorial Guinea, and son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema. All 25 cars, including a Koenigsegg One:1 that sold for £3,760,394, a LaFerrari that sold for £1,786,187 and an Aston Martin One-77 that went for £1,269,133, were sold at last weekend’s auction. In all they earned a grand total of £21.9million, a significant portion of which will be used to fund social projects in Equatorial Guinea. Read the full article

This is the new, £3.7m Pagani Huayra Roadster BC
Tumblr media
We’re not afraid to admit that we’re guilty of taking the mickey out of the relentless churn of special-edition Paganis. But that’s only because we’re incredibly bitter, jealous types. The mystique, magic and incessant pursuit of detail from Pagani is enchanting. Always has been, from the very first Zonda to their latest polka dot purple one-off. But when a brand new – as in totally brand new – Pagani comes along, we’re all bloody ears. And ladies and gents, we have a new Pagani: the Huayra Roadster BC.
Tumblr media
“Looks like the other one with the roof chopped off!” you scream into your keyboard. But it’s not. It’s all-new. New engine. New body. New aero. New suspension. New exhaust. New carbon. That enough new for you? Let’s start with the engine. It’s an all-new 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 specially designed for Pagani by AMG, whose engines have powered all of Pagani’s cars. It’s now the only V12 AMG makes and is bespoke to Pagani to futureproof twelve cylinders for years to come. It’s a thumper too; there are 791bhp and 774lb ft for the bespoke Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R rear tyres to deal with. The engine is still housed mid-ship, behind the driver’s head feeding an Xtrac seven-speed automated manual transmission with electro-hydraulic actuation and carbon fibre synchronisers.
Tumblr media
Talking of carbon fibre, the Huayra Roadster BC uses a completely new composite of carbon for even more stiffness and lighter weight, bringing the overall weight to 1,250kg. You see, Horacio is Mr Carbon Fibre. He actually invented various manufacturing techniques that are now being used on the Airbus A380 aeroplane and various specialised cars around the world. And where the Huayra showcased the first use of carborundum (carbon and titanium weaved together for Hulk-like strength), for the BC Roadster, the chaps at Pagani have been in the lab and got a new composite that offers an increase of 12 per cent in torsional rigidity and 20 per cent in flexional rigidity. It also has increased material costs by 450 per cent. Yowch. But more on price later. This increased stiffness all-round means you can put more stress on the car on the track. But also it’ll protect you when you’ve got overconfident and speared it into a wall.
Tumblr media
There have been huge advances in aero and cooling, too. Even though the original premise of the Huayra’s design was to mimic an aeroplane wing - all the better to manage airflow – scalping the roof off automatically hinders downforce. There were two seemingly mutually exclusive aims for the topless BC: 500kg of downforce at 174mph while maintaining a ground clearance that will allow passengers to enjoy driving at its finest on the road. They managed it with new forms, canards and simply throwing more wings at it to keep it squished into the floor. There’s also a brand new titanium six-exhaust pipe system that directs two of these pipes from the catalytic converters down under the car to the diffuser to exploit the benefits of a blown diffuser and generate further downforce. All this downforce - plus a new, whizzy constantly-variable electronic damper setup - allows for lateral acceleration of 1.9G during constant running, with peaks of 2.2G, and a longitudinal deceleration of 2.2G. Best hold on tight.
Tumblr media
Inside, there’s still the crazy love of detail and materials – the key ingredient of the Huayra, and a good indicator of Horacio’s laser-focused attention. The kinky artwork (also known as the gear lever) is still present, so are the leather straps restraining the clamshell, a key sculpted from a milled billet of aluminium into the shape of the car, and the sculptural chrome and twinkly LEDs. It’s still glorious and very different from anything on the market. Horacio’s belief that “art and science should be together, hand in hand” hasn’t changed. It’s probably been accentuated since this is a genuine handbuilt car formed in the new and ever-growing factory that could also double up as ‘Renaissance Italy’ in Disney’s Epcot resort.
Tumblr media
But the Huayra Roadster BC ain’t cheap. Remember when the Huayra rocked up at £800k (nearly four times an Aventador at the time) and was seen as pricey? Well, the Roadster BC has a sticker price of £3.7m. But the appreciation of cars like this has continued to grow, attracting high-value, low-profile customers like you wouldn’t believe. And the run of 40 is already accounted for. So no matter the result of Brexit, that kind of money isn’t a problem. Let’s just hope they track the topless steampunk spaceships. And let us have a go.
