Day 19: Action Figure

Derek rubbed his temples in irritation as he wandered through the numerous aisles of the toy store. Aisle after aisle, row after row, brightly colored advertisements and countless useless objects with stupidly high price tags made his headache even worse.

Derek had come to the toy store to find a gift for his boyfriend, Stiles… who he had to point out was a legal adult. Stiles was just a total kid at heart and loved to collect tons of franchise memorabilia, which was something that Derek loved about him. And after falling for the whole “Oh, you don’t have to get me anything” trap last year and having to deal with the fallout, Derek was determined to get Stiles the perfect gift this year.

“Damn it,” Derek growled at the memory of Stiles giving him the silent treatment after his non-gift last year, quickening his pace as he stomped through the aisles in search of something great.

Unfortunately, Derek was having no luck.

“Fuckin’ finally,” he repeated under his breath as he entered an aisle chock full of superhero action figures. 

Derek hurried down the aisle, his eyes scanning the rows of plastic men all over. Each one of them was brightly colored in blaring blues and radiant reds, their over exaggerated muscles looking extremely round and out of the realm of anything humanely possible. Derek’s trademark frown deepened as he searched all over the aisles for the perfect one.

No ordinary superhero would do, especially since Stiles already owned so many. Derek shuddered at the thought of accidentally buying his boyfriend one that he already owned, just to get the side eye and accused of not paying attention.

“Damn it,” the werewolf repeated, annoyed. He frantically began to search the aisle, picking up toy after toy and holding it close to his face studiously. Sure, they were all painted colors and had a variety of “[Insert Random Item]-Man” across the box in bright, blocky letters. However, Derek couldn’t seem to remember which ones Stiles already owned.

In his panic, the werewolf grabbed a white box that contained a blank action figure in it: no facial features or costume painted on at all.

The second his fingers grazed the mysterious box, Derek winced at the odd spark that traveled throughout his body, causing the hairs on the back of his neck to stand up. 

“What the hell was that?” he muttered as he brought his hand up to his face to examine his still tingling fingers.

Derek’s eyes widened as he witnessed his fingers taking on a shiny quality. He scrunched up his face in confusion as his fingers gleamed more underneath the bright fluorescents of the toy store. His heart raced in his chest as they stiffened, becoming immovable as his hand apparently turned into plastic.

“Wh-what?!” Derek panicked as the strange transformation traveled down his arms. Weirder was that the werewolf swore that his muscles plumped up, becoming larger and much more exaggerated before they hardened into the same plastic quality as his hands. His signature black leather jacket vacuumed to his torso as his pecs widened and pushed outwards, becoming skintight. It then started to brighten as it went from slate black to royal blue. His jeans underwent the same changes, suctioning to his buffer legs as they brightened into a cartoonish blue that looked more apt on a superhero, not a regular guy wandering around the mall. Derek winced as his bulge seemingly shrank as it was pressed tightly against him. Derek painstakingly move an almost inflexible arm and patted at his groin, groaning as it felt flat and unremarkable like a Ken doll.

The tingling sensation spread up to Derek’s head, and the altered stud couldn’t help but try to reach up with his plastic limbs. His hair had hardened into a large plastic mold, becoming a lump of black plastic in the shape of his usual hair style. His face felt smooth and unblemished, and he couldn’t help but press both of his hands on either side of his head and give it a little squeeze.  Derek couldn’t hold back his gasp as his head squished and then popped back into shape, illustrating that it made completely out of rubber now.

The werewolf tried to run off, to seek help, but he was stopped by his massively hindered movement. Like most action figures, his limbs were stiff and rigid, their over muscled selves only posable at the main joints.

“Well, well,” hummed an irritatingly familiar voice, “that’s a nice look there, Derek.”

Derek struggled to turn around, his virtually immobile body and larger muscles making movement extremely tedious. He fought back a growl when he saw none other than Theo, the bratty chimera who didn’t hide his crush on Stiles.

The mischievous smirk on Theo’s annoying face was enough to clue Derek into the fact that he was somehow behind whatever was happening to him.

“What did you do to me?” Derek demanded, trying to threateningly stalk forward, but his posable joints made his movements awkward.

Theo shrugged his shoulders. “I was lookin’ for a birthday gift for Stiles,” he snorted, “and I know that he likes action figures, and for some reason he also likes you, so…” He gestured forward at Derek’s new plastic body. “And you’re just about done.” 

Theo snapped his fingers.

Derek felt as if his sense of gravity was thrown as he wobbled on his stiff legs. The shelves in the aisle seemed to grow taller and much larger. However, it quickly dawned on Derek that the store wasn’t growing— he was shrinking.

The werewolf was helpless to do anything besides get smaller and smaller, as his movements became harder and harder to create. Derek’s scowl softened and instead he held a stoic expression as his face hardened. Eventually, the former alpha werewolf had been turned into  ten inch tall super hero action figure, complete with big muscles.

“Perfect!” Theo laughed as he easily picked up the toy Derek, snatching the blank box in his free hand.

Derek inwardly screamed, but was helpless as Theo positioned his plastic arms in a manner that looked like he had his hands on his hips in a heroic pose. He was shoved into the box, and from his frozen position, Derek could barely make out the outside of his prison chasing colors to become bright and alluring. Unbeknownst to him, the outside of the box now read: Superwolf: the World’s Most Muscular and Cranky Superhero!

“Stiles is gonna love my gift,” Theo laughed as he walked action figure Derek over to the cashier.

The whole time Derek screamed at being turned into a toy, and he just hoped that Stiles would figure out a way to help him out… and another part of him hoped that Stiles would like his large superhero muscles.

Hi. I have a short little bit of writing to share. Just a little exercise in thinking more about the past for my au version of Merry included in Friendcorp.

It’s a bit of writing that, in character as another agent, is writing a file up on Merry’s past EGO corrosions.

Warnings for:

-Alcoholism

-Drug usage (fictional and actual)

-Needles (not described, but implied usage)

-Body horror (of course) ie. Multiple limbs, things growing out of skin, plant and fungus related body horror, slime mold and spores, description of shedding skin like a cocoon, etc. Canon typical stuff tbh.

-Temporary character death

Herein lies the contents of this document, contents that shall be expunged from the agent’s files from now forward, unless of a sufficient level to access said events.

[Within this document are the multiple corrosion reports on a singular agent, designated number 777, Agent Merry Darthfellow. This agent has been the reason for day resets and full resets on many occasions and should be constantly monitored.]

Incident I :

Agent Darthfellow at the time of this report was wearing the suit of T-01-54 [Forsaken Murderer].

During a repression event where the agent was instructed to use lethal force on agents under severe panic, the agent began to display erratic behavior.

The captain at the time reported that they found the agent in the East Welfare hallway minutes later after the command had been given kneeling over the dead body of a clerk, quote, “mumbling to themself with their hands clasped almost like in prayer.”

The captain reported hearing the words “forgive me” before noticing the signs of corrosion upon the agent's face.

[Described as “straps of cloth and leather that looked too much like human skin and looked to be growing out of their face, along with metal clasps. Almost like a muzzle over their face. There were similar straps, not the ones on their suit, but other new ones, wrapped all around their body. They were surprisingly easy to incapacitate to bring for corrosion treatments and a memory wipe after reset”]

Note that in the agent’s file, there are psychiatric notes describing the death of their brother and the immense guilt they feel over his death. It is not believed that they were the cause, but the psychiatrist speculates that they heavily put the blame on themself in their head.

Incident II :

In similar speculation to the incident above, it is believed that this corrosion also stemmed from the death of their brother as being the root emotional causation of said incident.

The agent was being investigated for strange behaviors (ie. Visiting the same abnormality, T-01-68 [Funeral of the Dead Butterflies], as their EGO suit without logging their hours or being assigned to work on the abnormality) and was put in for a mental corruption screening.

The agent put in charge of said screening reportedly did not instruct them to change out of their EGO.

In reports afterwards, it was written that the agent had begun to double over in pain during the portion of the screening regarding past trauma (particularly the questions about witnessing death during childhood).

[Quote: “An arm ripped out from their chest. It looked to have clawed out from under their skin. (Later notes make a comparison to the process of a butterfly emerging from a cocoon). It was like they, no. It. Was crawling out of their skin. Its face was crawling, like multiple butterflies were trying to make up a face. Eye spots where eyes should be. And the thing was wearing an old, worn down funeral tuxedo, covered in dirt and worms. Just like the actual abnormality, it had an extra arm sprouting from the chest, but it also had crumpled up looking useless butterfly wings. Like they hadn’t formed right in the cocoon.”

Reportedly the agent then quickly incapacitated the corroded agent 777 through multiple shots of a white damage weapon.

Incident III :

Agent 777 was currently in possession of both the EGO weapon and suit of O-02-98 [Porccubus]. This is only one of several incidents involving agent 777 and said abnormality. It is possible that restrictions will have to be put in place to keep further problems from arising.

[Written incident report, fully quoted: Agent Darthfellow was reported by an agent 780 of Safety as being found, quote, “high off their ass on enkephalin, multiple pain medicines stored in Safety (of both pill and syringe variety) and drinking from a bottle of whiskey when found.” The agent was reportedly “rooted to the spot” in literal terms, as vines grew out of their arms and had embedded into the floor. They were covered in leaves, vines and thorns, and agent 780 reports that they were cackling endlessly. Red petals were starting to grow from their face upon 780’s arrival to the scene, and were trying to cover 777’s face as 780 worked on trying to unroot the agent and then incapacitate them. Workers had to wear thick gardening gloves when moving the body of 777, for fear of pricking themselves on the thorns.]

Incident IV :

O-01-73 [The rest of this report has been completely redacted at request of the disciplinary team sephirah]

Incident V :

Agent 777 was reported at the time as wearing the EGO suit and gift of O-04-66 [The Little Prince] during the incident.

[Said agent was reported from security footage as working in a lab at the time of the incident. They had been working for over seven hours at that point, and another agent entered the lab, seemingly angering agent 777. As the other agent entering the room doesn’t remember [memory expunged] the words they said, it’s unclear what 777 was furious about. Security footage shows them throwing a beaker of liquid to the ground after yelling for quite some time and then convulsing on the spot, staggering over to the floor as blue puffball mushrooms similar to the EGO grew all over their skin. Their mouth opened seemingly to scream, but all that came out was stalks of mushrooms that erupted into spores upon hitting the air. The other agent is reported as having ran after the spores hit the air and locked the room down for a contaminant in the air. Further security footage shows multiple black eyes opening up on the puffballs, all oozing a thick black liquid in a look similar to crying. Agent 777 was recorded as writing down something on a personal notebook [confiscated and redacted fully] before collapsing and “melting into a mass of slime mold which further contaminated the air”]

No further corrosions have been reported as of writing this document. Agent 777, Merry Darthfellow, is to be monitored and put under strict orders to keep from causing further issues. Any further incidents involving agent 777 should be reported to captains of necessary teams, or any of the sephirot.

MESUË THE YOUNGER (fl. ca. 1200?).Canones universales. First Giunta edition. Printed in Venice by Luca-Antonio Giunta, 1527. 388 leaves. 32 cm tall.

Much like a good Thanksgiving meal, the book this month has a little bit of everything. Foundational medical text? Check. Authorial intrigue? Check. Marginalia? Check. Evidence of possible censorship? Check. Evidence of manuscript AND printer's waste. Heck yeah. Football? Well...no. But don't let that stop you from reading on. Your brain-stomach will be full to the brim after reading all about Canones universales from Masawayh al-Mardini (also known as Yuhanna ibn Masawayh and in the West as John Mesue, Mesue the Younger, or Pseudo-Mesuë).

Mesue was a rockstar in medieval and early modern pharmaceutical medicine as well as a mysterious figure with confusing origins. The earliest known writing by Mesue is from northern Italy in the late 13th century. These are supposed Latin translations of the Arabic originals. The problem is, although Mesue is credited with many works, no original Arabic texts exist.

We now know through the detective work of scholars that Mesue is most likely a pseudonym chosen to capitalize on the name recognition of an earlier Arabic writer, Yuhanna ibn Masawayh. Ibn Masawayh (ca. 777-857) was a  physician from Baghdad who wrote many works of his own. Known in the west as Mesue the Elder, ibn Masawayh was famous in his own right and, among many other topics, wrote pharmaceutical treatises.

Mesue's works were an immediate hit. Some of the most famous western physicians of the time, including Petrus de Abanoand Mondino dei Luzzi, wrote commentaries on Mesue's work. Canones, in particular, was very influential. It was printed more times in the 15th century than works from several other influential authors, including ibn Sina and Pliny the Elder.

Canonescontains the whole of the Pseudo-Mesuë's writings, consisting of three works: one on purgatives (laxatives); an antidotarium, or apothecary's manual, which was the most popular handbook of drugs in medieval Europe; and an incomplete manual of special therapeutics. The first work, De simplicibus, is a book of so-called "simples." These were substances from nature thought to have medicinal properties, or "virtues," a term used throughout our many herbal medicine works. De simplicibus specifically listed forty-nine purgatives - substances used to purge bodily fluids and rebalance one's "humors."

The second work, Antidotarium sive Grabadin medicamentorum, or simply the Grabadin, was a major work of pharmaceutical compounds. It greatly expanded the drug treatments available to European practitioners. It was based on Arabic pharmaceutical tradition, which had as its foundation Greek tradition. It became the standard for European pharmacopoeia and was the foundation for centuries of pharmaceutical medicine.

This edition of 1527 (we also have a 1502 edition) would have functioned as a Physician's Desk Reference, guiding practitioners in their use of pharmaceutical treatments. Along with Canones, it contains medical and pharmacological works by other authors such as de Abano and dei Luzzi, as well as Abulcasis (Abū al-Qāsim Khalaf ibn ʻAbbās al-Zahrāwī), Saladino Ferro, Gentile da Foligno, Christophorus de Honestis, Francesco di Piedimonte, Matthaeus Platearius, and Niccolò da Salerno.

This book has clearly lived an eventful life. As can be seen from the images above, the leather covering has experienced quite a bit of trauma. The pretty blind-tooled cover shows a large tear, deep scratches, insect damage, evidence of mold, and major loss along the lower spine. As horrible as all this may look, it provides us with a lot of information we would not have had available with a completely untouched binding.

For those interested in historical bindings, there is a wealth of information. The exposed spine shows us the sewing and materials used to create the binding. I have written before about manuscript or printer's waste - the recycling of manuscript and printed material in the construction of new books. The exposed spine on Canones shows evidence for both! Take a close look at the image of the spine and you will see hand lettering on parchment and what looks like a print of a small decorative frame used as a spine liner. For more on waste in the John Martin collection, join me for a talk I will give at the Iowa Bibliophiles this spring.

Diving into the book, many of the pages are heavily annotated, including several manicules like what is shown in my intro. And much like those of modern students, the annotations peter out before the end of the book. The more things change...

Taking a look at the paper, most of it is in really good shape. It has a lovely creamy color and supple texture. Every so often throughout the book is a leaf with heavy foxing (rusty-looking discoloration). It is clear that at least one batch of paper used to print the book was of substandard quality and contains acidic particles eating away at the paper. Hopefully, most of the damage has already been done.

Finally, about three-quarters of the way through the book, a section has been rather violently ripped out. One of the photos shows the uneven and rough stubs left over from this assault. Did someone find something they disliked and angrily remove it? Was it a section with valuable information that a student or practitioner decided to take for themselves? The missing section mainly deals with the pleasant-sounding "putrid fever." Was it a library book and, lacking a sharp knife, someone coughed loudly while ripping out the pages? We will never know, but it is fun to think about!

Answered a question on reddit and was asked for pictures. This is the only successful attempt I have had at rehabbing moldy leather. Purchase was from a leather resale shop at a local ren-faire. My daughter got this and I picked up a pair of house-of-andar boots. Turns out both had gotten wet and later bloomed with mold/mildew - from the severity of the bloom there is no way the shop ownder didn't know. I should have noticed by the corrosion on some of the brass hardware but I was fairly drunk by that time of the day. I tried a variety of things on the boots but gave up and threw them out after a few weeks of trying. When my daughter showed the journal to me later, I thought to try a woodwork mold killer called concrobium that I had in the shop. I wiped it down, sprayed inside and out with concrobium, and allowed to soak. Then I put it in front of a box fan, opening/rotating throughout the day to dry it. I left the dried salts in place and buffed with neatsfoot oil and honestly it looks better 6 months after treatment than when she first bought it.

The lighter bits are concrobium salt I left in place except for the surface mar on the back lower right. No mold and the metal corrosion does not appear to have worsened. I am overall satisfied with this method and I regret tossing the boots before trying it on black leather. Anyways if you see a shop called De Rosa's Boots, make sure you get a damned good deal because he either does not store anything properly or picks up water damaged goods for a steal and then sells them full price after a superficial cleaning. IMO you're better off taking a picture and searching for the original artist/mfr in online ren-faire forums.

His eyes bore into mine. Dad sat tense in the kitchen, following my every move. I could not get the energy to care about his sour mood. He could be pissed off at me all he wanted to; I still would not bend to his every whim. He could pout and complain, all he wanted to; all he was going to end up doing was wasting his breath. We sat in silence, the quiet clanks and screeches of metal hitting the glass plates below occasional let-out spurts of sound.  

But I knew the silent treatment from my father could only last so long. Especially when it is dealing with something as glaringly important as this.  

“Elliot, you know we need to talk about last night.”  

I did not bother to reply to him, not verbally or physically. I simply got up, abandoning the food that was placed in front of me.

“You don’t have to leave now honey.” Mom muttered sadly.

“No Caroline, let’s watch our son walk away from another one of his problems.” Dad replied with a disparaging tone.

If he thought that would get me to react, he had another thing coming.

“See there he goes, dumping his baggage on everyone else, not caring that his actions might affect the both of us. Not caring that we could lose everything I have worked for.” He commented after I did not respond to him.

“Oliver,” Mom whispered in a melancholic tone. “Just stop.”

Before I left the kitchen, my father spoke again. “I am not stopping until he realizes just how much he has put this family in jeopardy. Especially over something that he considers to be “love.” He mocked, rolling his eyes at his own sentence.  

“Love you, mom. I got to go.” I simply state before walking away.

“You can’t ignore this forever, Elliot; you’ll have to listen to me eventually!” Dad’s voice echoed throughout the house, following my every step.  

“Whatever.” I say to myself.

“El-” I slammed the door, cutting off my hearing from another one of my father’s infamous tangents.

He must love to hear himself spew off complete and utter nonsense...

~~~ One minute I was walking alone, completely annoyed, the longer I replayed my father's ignorant words in my mind. And the next...

Well, I honestly felt like my arm was nearly ripped out of its socket. I was spun around abruptly to be met with an all too familiar pair of icy, bitter eyes.

“Are you ignoring me just to piss me off?” Darry asked me heatedly. “I’ve been shouting your name for the past 2 minutes.”  

What a greeting...

“I’m sorry what was that? I only listen to words spoken to me that are worthwhile.” I sniped back.

Darry’s grip tightened on my arm, making me wince. “Don’t you dare snap at me like that, boy.” He sneered.

“Get the hell-” I ripped my arm out of his vice like grip, making him angrier. “Off of me! And after the shit you pulled last night, I think I have a right to snap at you!”

“Shit, I pulled? The shit I pulled? I was just stepping in trying to protect my brother from the nonsense you filled into his head!” He yelled; specks of spit hit my face due to the proximity we had with one another.

“You know, you talk about Soda like he’s this... naïve, foolish human being. When in reality he’s the exact opposite of this image you put of him in your head.” I explain bitterly.

“I don’t-”

“Really? So, you truly think I brainwashed Soda every day for the past 3 months. Telling him to be gay, telling him to fall in love with me? That’s not how relationships work, Darry. That’s not how they work at all!”  

“Oh please.” Darry scoffed, not taking me seriously in the slightest. He backed away from me, pacing in anger. As I looked past him, I noticed a boy clad in a brown leather jacket. He watched up from a distance, observing my every move quickly.

“The second you met him you knew you could mold him into whatever the fuck you wanted him to be. He just someone who wants affection, and you gave it to him. He isn’t in love with you, he’s in love with the attention you give him!” Darry ranted.

"You are delusional!” I exclaim. “Why, why is it so crazy to you that your brother is gay? Seriously, what is so hard to comprehend about that?”

“Because he knows what’s right and wrong.” He said simply.

“Oh, don’t give me that morality crap!” I hiss.  

“A man should not lie with another man.” He spoke as if it was the most obvious statement in the world.

“Oh, so, you’re basing your ideology on a book. You’re not... basing it on something that you truly believe is wrong? Fuck your brother’s happiness, he’s sinning!” I exclaimed in faux horror.

“Hey!” Darry started pushing me back roughly. “I care about my brother’s happiness!”

“How do you know that I don’t give him happiness? Honestly, what part of you truly thinks I am in his life to bring him nothing but evil?”

“You’re not giving him happiness; you’re just-”  

“Brainwashing him? Yeah, you brought that point up before. What else do you got?” I interrupt tensely.

“Y-you don’t love him.” He spoke humorously.

“Oh, and Sandy did? You know... his previous girlfriend that cheated on him?” I asked mockingly. “But hey, that relationship was fine though because it was straight and holy and pure right?”

“You’re playin’ a sick joke on him, filling his head with nonsense that he would forget in a week if you weren’t around.” He tried to speak as strongly as he could. But I could tell he was running out of things to say.  

“I’m am not playing a joke on him, Darry. I wouldn’t do something like that to anybody, and I sure as hell wouldn’t do something like that to someone like Soda.” I admit, my jaw clenched in frustration. “So, you can try to accuse me of playing games or manipulating your brother so he can bend to my every whim. But I think we both know that those accusations you speak are nothing but wind.”

Darry seemed as though he was holding himself back, but the more I spoke the more he looked as though he wanted to know the living daylights out of me.

“The only fact of the matter is that your brother is gay and you can’t handle it!” I hissed, getting into his face. My voice wavered in anger the longer the conversation went on.

“He is not.” His voice was quiet, simmering in rage.

“He is, and I am too. So, you can threaten me, follow me around to try and intimidate me.” I then pointed to the boy who was still hanging around us. “You can try and get your friends to do whatever you want them to do to me. But nothing, nothing will change the way I feel, and it sure as hell won’t change the way he feels.”

“Get out of my face.” He gritted out before pushing me back again.  

“You can’t handle the truth, can you? That your brother is doing something that isn’t correlating with some bullshit view point you have! He’s gay Darry! He’s gay! Get over it!”  

Before I even realized what I was doing, I shoved Darry back as hard as I could. He stumbled back before recovering quickly, his fist suddenly clenched in my shirt, jerking me roughly. Before I could even react, a bony fist was slammed into my jaw, making me bite my tongue harshly.

I balled my hand into a fist myself and knocked my knuckles as impactfully as I could into his face. The hit stunned him, but before I could do anything else I was grabbed by the collar of my shirt, choking me slightly. I was thrown down onto the ground, my hand landing unnaturally as I fell onto the concrete.

The boy who had been watching me before stood above me. His face was menacing and tense. My blood ran cold, staring into the intimidating pair’s stares.  

“Fuckin’ soc scum.” The boy’s voice gritted; a sudden boot entered my line of vision before crashing onto my face, making my head jerk back onto the concrete. The boot hit my face again; it struck me seemingly harder than the first kick.

Things became a bit fuzzy after that; the slight taste of copper dripping into my mouth from my lower lip. Pressures began to bloom painfully on my stomach and ribs. The wind felt as though it was getting knocked out of me every few seconds.
