chapter one, part 1/3 (part 2/3)
They arrived in Antwerp about a half-hour ago. It is the beginning of September. The weather is still okay and since these are the last days of summer everyone is making the best of it by enjoying the sun outside. Lucas is driving a minivan with Isa in the passenger seat. They arrived in the last part of their journey, since they are just a few streets away from their new student residence.
“I already love Antwerp,” Isa says while looking out of the window, “the city looks so full of life.” She smiles and turns to look at Lucas. “Yeah, I’m excited too,” he says smiling back while still focusing on the road. “I hope our roommates are as nice as they told us online.” Isa starts laughing and bumps Lucas’ shoulder. “I’m sure they are nice people, don’t worry about it.”
Just a few minutes later they arrive in the correct street. “okay, now we gotta find the right house,” Lucas says slowing down slightly so he can absorb his surroundings, “It’s house number 264, you’ll look right, I’ll look left.” He slowly keeps driving through the street looking for the house until he hears Isa screaming next to him.
”Stop, it’s here, number 264!”
Lucas stops the van and turns to Isa her side to check out the house. “Well, that looks about right,” he smiles.
“We, surprisingly, survived this 2 hour trip together with you behind the steering wheel, so I think we are gonna be totally fine here in Antwerp,” Isa teases.
“Ah! I’m a perfectly good driver,” Lucas reacts offended but quickly changes his voice to a teasing one, “how dare you offend me like that Isa Keijser!”
“I think, Mr. van der Heijden, as one of your best friends, I’m privileged enough to offend you like that,” she says with a serious but still mocking tone.
“So you're one of my best friends? Weird I didn't know that.”
“Luc!” Isa says offended.
“I’m just kidding Ies, I’m really happy we are doing this together, since you are one of my best friends.”
She gave Lucas en smile with a hug right after. “Well, what are we waiting for, let’s go and meet our new roomies!” Isa giggles and jumps out of the van.
Once they both stand in front of the door, Isa rings the bell. They wait a few seconds until they hear a voice through the intercom. “Hello?”
“Oh, uh hi, we’re Isa and Lucas. we're here to move in,” Isa says.
“Ah yes! If you wait a sec, I’ll come open the door,” the voice, that probably belongs to a guy, says.
After a moment a figure appears behind the door. They hear the jingling sound of keys, a loud sigh, some more keys rustling together and finally the lock clicking open.
The door swings open to reveal a guy. Lucas swallows, taking in his appearance. He looks about their age, tanned skin and dark brown hair, or maybe it's black? Lucas can't really tell in this lightning. He's wearing a maroon-coloured shirt with grey sweatpants underneath that are just a tad too short. He looks taller than Lucas, altogether he was very handsome.
“Hey guys, come in,” the guy smiles stepping aside. They walk inside and Lucas closes the door behind him.
“I’m Jens, nice to meet you.” He stretches his hand out in front of Isa who takes it.
“Nice to meet you too, I’m Isa.”
Jens smiles and releases his hand from hers and turns to Lucas, sticking out his hand again. Lucas looks at his hand for a second before taking it in his own. He sucks in a breath at the touch.
Suddenly Isa elbows him in his side. He totally forgot to say something. “Oh uh,” his voice comes out shaky, “I’m Lucas.”
“it’s nice to meet you, Lucas,” Jens nods with a smirk on his face.
They drop each others hands. The small silence that followed was quickly replaced by Isa’s voice.
“So, can you give us a little tour?”
“Yes, sorry, of course,” Jens said, shaking his head, “follow me.”
Lucas and Isa follow Jens from the small hallway to the stairs, which leads them to another, but little bigger, hallway with a few doors on the right side, another staircase on the left side and a door on the end of the hall.
Jens point to the doors at the left. “these are few of the bedrooms which you can look at later, because first I’m  showing you the living room.” He keeps walking to the door at the end of the hall, and opens it before stepping aside so Isa en Lucas can enter first.
There are two couches placed on the left side of the room with a small coffee table in the middle, which already as some empty beer cans laying on top of it. On the wall is a TV, and it looks like there is already a PlayStation installed. In the middle of the area, there is a big wooden dining table with place for at least 8 people. And on the right side is a kitchen that is, for the most part, separated from the living area with a white empty wall. Behind the kitchen table are a few large windows and two doors that lead to a balcony. The whole place looks a bit crappy, it is still just a student residence, but Lucas thinks they will be able to make this a nice and homey place. Maybe they can add some plants?
“This is our main living room. As you can see it’s mostly still empty, I just moved in three days ago and I thought it would be more fun to decorate it all together.”
“It looks nice,” Isa says while walking to the middle of the room to take a better look.
“Are any of the others already here?” Lucas asks Jens.
“Ah yes, one guy named Friso. We arrived at the same time, but I think he is in his room right now. He isn’t so talkative, so I don’t know much about him.”
Lucas nods.
“and the last people should also arrive today if I’m correct.”
“That’s awesome,” Lucas says while giving Jens a small smile. “But how does this work, can Isa and I just choose between the leftover rooms?”
“Yeah, the rooms are all kind of similar, so it doesn’t really matter who gets which room. So there are two rooms down this hall, one of which is already in use by Friso, with a small bathroom in between them. Then we have three more rooms on the second floor, but with a bit bigger bathroom. And lastly a room in the attic with a small bathroom.”
Lucas and Isa nod and take in all the information.
“I’m using one of the rooms on the second floor, the one right in front of the staircase, so you can choose between the rest,” Jens says while walking over to one of the couches to sit down.
“Okay, thanks Jens,” Isa said while grabbing Lucas's arm to drag him out of the living room. ”Come, Luc, let’s get ourselves a room.”
After checking out all of the rooms, Isa settles in a room on the second floor, at the end of the hall next to Jens his room, with the bathroom next to hers.
Lucas went for the room on the attic. It has a big window, which he likes because now his room has a lot of light, and there is enough room to leave all his art and his easel.
The rooms already contain a bed, a dresser for some close and a small desk with a chair. Lucas his bed is placed on the left side against the wall, opposite from the window. It is a double bed, which he likes. The desk is also placed on that side and the dresser is next to the window.
Lucas looks at the setting for a while, before deciding to switch the dresser and desk. He places the desk right under the window. this way he has a lot of daylight while working, and he can look outside while doing so, which calms him down.
After giving everything a place he is satisfied with, he hears Isa calling him from under the staircase. “Luc, come, we're gonna get our stuff!”
“coming!” He walks out of his room and hops down the stairs.
“Jens and Friso are gonna help us,” Isa says when Lucas walks up to her.
“Friso?”
“Yeah, that other guy. Do you ever pay attention, Luc?” she rolls her eyes in a playful way. “I just had a little chat with him, he seems nice.” “So come, you got to meet him too and we're gonna get our stuff from the van.”
They walk down the other staircase, through the hall to the front door. Jens and Friso are already waiting at the back of the van. This is the first time Lucas sees Friso. He has black hair, is wearing a simple grey sweater with dark blue jeans and wears a pair of glasses. He kind of reminds Lucas of Shane from buzzfeed unsolved.
When Lucas is in front of him, Friso shakes his hand. “Hey, I’m Friso.”
“Hey, nice to meet you,” Lucas answers.
“Okay, let’s get all this shit to our rooms,” Isa says, while opening the back of the van.
-
When Jens walks into Lucas his room, he sees him sitting on the floor opening one of his clothing boxes. “This is your last box”
Lucas looks up. “Thanks, you can put it next to the others,” he says while pointing to the last unopened boxes standing next to his desk.
Jens walks over to the other boxes and places it next to them. he stands back up and takes a look at the stuff that Lucas already took out. There is a skateboard placed against the wall under some band posters. He takes a better look at the posters. One of them is from the  1975 and the other from the arctic monkeys. He does recognize the names and knows they are indie bands, but he doesn’t really listen to it himself. Next to his desk is an easel with an empty canvas on it. There are a few pictures on his desk, probably with his friends, a few books, an open sketchbook and a lot of paint and some brushes. He wants to take a better look at the sketchbook, so he moves some of the boxes making more room for him the stand.
On the paper is a pencil drawing, a portrait of a woman laughing with wavy hair and eyes that sparkle. The whole drawing has a calm and happy vibe to it.
“that's my mom.” Jens jumps a little from Lucas’s voice, before looking up.
“It’s really pretty. Did you draw this?” Jens asks curious.
“Yeah, I think that's kind of obvious since half of my room contains art-related products,” he laughs, “but thanks,” he says with a genuine smile.
“Do you just do this for fun or do you also study art or something?”
“Well, of course, I do this because I like to do it, otherwise it would be a waste of time. But yes, I’m gonna start studying art, here in Antwerp.”
“That’s so cool! From what I have seen, it looks like you’re really good at it.”
Lucas laughs. “You have literally seen one pencil drawing I did.”
Jens rolls his eyes. “Okay, then show me more, convince me,” he says with a cocky smile.
Lucas stares out the window, staying silent for a second.
“Unless you don’t want to show me more, of course,” Jens says, realising art can be something very personal.
Lucas looks back at Jens. “Maybe another time,” he says before ducking down to grab another box and walking back to his dresser.
Jens stays silent for a second, watching Lucas walk away. The small interaction had left him stunned for some reason. “I’m heading to the supermarket for dinner, any requests?” he asks, walking over to the door.
“Uhm, can we just get pizza. I’m really hungry from the drive so some good pizza would be nice,” Lucas looks over his shoulder.
Jens nods. “That sounds good, see you later.”
“Later,” Lucas answers going back to unpacking.
-
After putting some of his clothes away Lucas decides to check how Isa is doing. He walks into her room and sees that there are still a lot of closed boxes on the floor. It looks like she hasn’t done anything at all.
“Looks like you have made a lot of progress,” He says while scanning the room.
Isa is laying on her bed that is located in the middle of the room with the head against the wall. She is scrolling through her phone while mindlessly eating out of a bag of leftover chips from the trip.
“huh? O yeah, I’m not in a rush,” she says with her eyes still glued on her phone.
Lucas laughs. “I can see that.” He walks up to her bed and drops himself down next to her.
“You excited for your first day of school tomorrow?” Lucas asks. “Gonna be kinda scary, new country, new people.”
“Yeah and new hot people,” Isa says with a cocky smile while finally taking her eyes off her phone and looking at Lucas. “It is time for you to meet a nice Belgian guy. On our way here I already saw some cute guys walking around.”
“Ugh Ies,” he says annoyed but with a smile on his face. “I’m not really looking for anything you know.”
“Okay I know that, but it doesn’t hurt anyone to at least meet some new guys, does it?”
Lucas rolls his eyes. “I know, I know. I will meet some people, for you,” he says while getting off the bed.
“No, no Luc. You gotta do it for yourself!”
“Yeah Ies, whatever. Get off your lazy ass and start unpacking these boxes” He gives her a big smile and walks out of the room.
-
They are all sitting on the couches in the living room, eating their cheap pizza while watching some random program on the tv when the doorbell rings.
“who's that?” Isa asks with her mouth full of pizza.
“Probably one of the new housemates,” Jens shurgs.
When nobody gets up to open the door friso says “somebody needs to get up,” but everybody stays put.
“Alright, I’ll go,” Friso sighs moving off the couch.
Just a few minutes later, Friso comes back with two new people behind him. Jens sits up straighter so he can see who the new people are.
One of them is a girl. She has blond wavy hair, her skin is kind of tanned and she is wearing light blue denim skinny jeans on her long legs with a black tank top and white Nike air forces. She looks kind of sweet but arrogant at the same time. Next to her walks a guy. He has messy dark blond hair, he is wearing a white oversized band shirt with dark blue pants and a pair of white dr. martens underneath. He has a big grin on his face while scanning the area he is standing in. He looks like a chill guy.
Before Jens observe them more, Friso starts talking.
“Guys, this is Annabell and Ely, our last roommates.”
They all put down their pizza and stand up from the couch to properly meet.
“Do you guys already know each other, since you came together?” Jens asks after they introduced themselves.
“O no, we just arrived at the same time,” Ely answers.
“Ah, okay cool,” Jens says. “Well you guys can fight over the last two available rooms. One of them right down the hall and one upstairs on the second floor.”
Ely turns to Annabell. “Oh, I don’t really care, you can choose. I’m going for a smoke,” he says while turning around to walk to the balcony.
“Is it okay if i come with you?” Jens asks.
Ely looks back. “Yeah, sure.”
Jens walks over to the coffee table where he has an already rolled joint ready. He grabs it, and walks to the balcony where Ely is already lighting his joint. He leans back against the railing and looks at the view. It is around 8:30  in the evening. The sun is slowly setting, giving Antwerp a orange glow.
“You need the lighter?”
“Yeah, thanks,” Jens says while taking the lighter from Ely.
He puts the joint in his mouth and covers it with his right hand from the wind while lighting it with his left hand. When it is lit, he lowers his left hand and takes the joint in his other and inhales slow but deep.
“What do you study?” Jens asks after exhaling the smoke.
“Music production, gonna start my second year tomorrow. You?”
“That’s so cool! I’m gonna study communication and multimedia design, it’s a lot about programming and visual design and stuff. This is my first year so I’m pretty excited.”
“I’ve heard of that, sounds cool,” Ely answers. “What do you do in your spare time?”
“I like to skate with my friends.”
“Really? I also skate, we should go to the park together sometime,” he says while taking another drag.
“Yeah sounds cool,” Jens says with a smile. It’s gonna be fun living here with these people he thinks.
-
“Does anyone else want anything?” Annabell shouts from where she’s standing in the kitchen
They’ve been spending the rest of the night hanging out in the living room, getting to know each other. Except for Friso, he wanted to go to bed early and get a goodnight rest before his first day.
“No thanks, we’re all good” Lucas yells back at her.
When she returns from the kitchen holding a can of coke, she walks over to the couch that Jens is sitting on. She plops down right next to him. Leaving almost no space in between their bodies. Jens rubs his hands over his legs and gives her an awkward smile.
“Have you lived in Antwerp your whole life?” She asks him, turning her upper body into his direction.
“Yeah I have.” he slides his body away from her, completely leaning against the armrest of the couch.
She pushes the tab of her coke can down before taking a slow sip, looking into Jens’ eyes the whole time.
Across from them, on the other couch, Isa is trying not to laugh at how uncomfortable Jens looks.
"wow me too, weird I haven't seen you before," Annabell says, making Isa and Ely snort at the same time.
Annabell tries to give them an innocent look. “What?” She says, batting her eyelashes.
Lucas rolls his eyes at her, he already doesn’t like her. Right when Annabell is about to say something else to Jens, Lucas cuts her off. “I heard there was a chill skatepark around here somewhere, is that right?”
“Yeah, there is.” Jens looks relieved and sends him a small smile. “You skate too right? I saw your board in your room.”
“Yeah, I do.”
Annabell slumps down against the couch and crosses her arms with a big pout on her lips making Isa laugh again.
“Jens and I were talking about skating together, you should join us,” Ely suggests.
“Yeah, you should” Jens grins directly at Lucas.
Lucas smiles weakly and nods, “Yeah cool.”
He was kind of hoping to skate alone with Jens, but there’s plenty of time for that in the future.

Ou seja, know-how gratuito.

Ou seja, know-how gratuito.

O mesmo motor deve equipar futuramente City e WR-V.

Agradecimentos ao Lucas André Theis.

“Luc, did you hear me?”
Lucas looks up from the napkin that he’s tearing apart. “What?”
“I asked if you wanted the rest of my brownie,” Sander says with a slight frown on his face. “Is everything okay? You´re awfully quiet.”
He drops the napkin on the table and sighs, looking around the small cafe they’re sitting in. They do this every Thursday afternoon, when their classes end at the same time, they get coffee and a pastry in a small coffee bar a street away from the school.
“Sorry, I’m a bit distracted today,” he says as he reaches across the table for Sanders’ brownie.
“Does it have anything to do with Jens?”
“Jens?” Lucas replies with his mouth full of brownie, some crumbs falling out onto the table.
Sander nods his head, “He said you guys had some sort of argument last weekend.”
Lucas groans and lets his head fall onto the table. Of course Jens told Sander, probably his other friends as well, which means they all know how much of an idiot he was by throwing Jade out like that. As if he wasn’t embarrassed enough already.
ever since that morning, the atmosphere between the two had been extremely tense. They barely spoke, avoided being in the same room together, except for when they had dinner with the other roommates, but even then they ignored each others presence.
Lucas hates it, he hates not talking to Jens, which makes him feel stupid for getting attached so quickly. He hates how much impact Jens has on him, after knowing him for not even a month. He feels like a fool for caring so much about what Jens thinks of him, he doesn’t care about Friso’s opinion, or Annabell’s, not even Ely’s. But Jens is different. He wants Jens to like him, and the thought of Jens being angry with him is driving him crazy.
“Aw,” Sander pats his head lightly, “It’s okay, he felt really bad about it.”
Lucas’ head shot up, “He did?”
Sander chuckles. “Yeah, we talked for a bit and he sounded frustrated,” He takes his hand off of Lucas’ head after ruffling his curls. “I could tell he was sad about it.”
“Sad?”
“Yeah, because you guys are avoiding each other.”
Lucas feels the corners of his mouth turn up into a small smile. Of course he isn’t happy about the fact that Jens is not happy, but it gives him a little bit of hope that he isn’t the only one who’s upset about the situation.
“But then why didn’t he just come to talk to me?”
Sanders sighs. “Jens isn’t the best in expressing his feelings. He always bottles everything up. It’s like he wears a mask. He tries to act chill and like he doesn’t really care about everything that happens around him. It sometimes even looks like he just hopes that his problems will solve them self by ignoring them, but that really isn’t the right way, and I hope you know that too.”
Lucas furrows his eyebrows. “So, he does want to talk to me, but he also doesn’t?”
“Well, yeah. He feels really bad about the situation but he is just too stubborn to face it and go up to you. From what he told me, it looks like he only thinks about all the bad ways it could turn out instead of thinking that you guys could have a normal conversation and solve things,” Sander explains. “He just thinks you won’t forgive him. Would you?”
Lucas is quiet for a moment, progressing the information Sander just told him, then he speaks up again.
“Yeah, at least, i think. I just really want to talk to him at least.” He crosses his arms on the table and leans his head on them. “We both did some things that weren’t right you know, he isn’t the only one who should feel guilty,” he sighs. “How do I get him to talk to me?”
“I think you should go talk to him, although it really should be Jens going to you. I tried telling him that, but he is just too cocky.”
Lucas growns and buries his head back in his arms.
“Ugh, what should I even say? I can’t just go like ‘Sorry Jens, for throwing your girl out and acting like a dick while everything between us was fine, will you forgive me?’” He mumbles into the skin of his arm but the sarcastic tone can't be missed in his voice.
“Why not?” Sander says, as if it's really that simple.
“You really aren’t good at apologizing, are you?” Lucas says, lifting his head up.
Sander snorts. “Well, I painted Robbe a big ass mural when things weren’t good between us. And look where we are now!”
Lucas rolls his eyes. “I’m not going to paint Jens a mural.”
“Again, why not?”
“I should have had this conversation with somebody else, you suck.”
“Auch, you hurt my feelings there buddy,” he says with his hand on his heart and a pained expression on his face.
“Fuck off,” Lucas says, but the smile on his face is bright.
“Okay, but for real, I think you should go talk to him. He would be more than happy if you came up to him because he is so scared that you don’t want to talk at all.”
Lucas looks down at the torn up napkin still laying on the table. He really wants to talk to Jens, but he doesn’t want to fuck it up. Jens is cool, really cool. And he doesn’t feel like ending their friendship just yet, or ever.
“Alright,” Lucas says while looking back up, “I will talk to him, but I want to do it right now because now I have to courage and maybe later I will back out.”
“Okay, then go now Luc.”
“You sure?” Lucas asks hesitant.
“Yes of course, I was going to Robbe’s anyways after we were done.”
“Shocking.” He grins.
“Pff, shut up,” Sander says while shaking his head, “Now go and get your boy.”
“He is not my boy.”
“yet,” Sander says with a smirk.
“Now you shut up. We’re friends, so I’m going now, to talk to my friend,” he stands up, puts his jacket on and pushes his chair back under the table, “bye Sander, and thanks for your,” he holds up his hands makes two air quotes, “advice.”
“Stop insulting me! I gave good advice. And if you wait a second, I’ll pay and than we can leave together.”
-
Lucas said goodbye to Sander a few minutes ago. He is now cycling on his own, back to his apartment. And he is not going to lie: he’s nervous as hell. He hopes Jens isn’t home yet. He needs to prepare himself for this conversation. As of right now he has no idea what to say. He needs to figure that out, so he doesn't look like an idiot in front of Jens.
He picks up the speed, pushing down on the pedals of his bike that he’s owned since he was fourteen. An old one, that previously belonged to Kes’ brother. Lucas’ parents refused to buy him a new one after he wrecked his going down the ramps in the skate park with Kes.
The wind blows through his hair as he races through to streets of antwerp. He closes his eyes for only a second. There are a million thoughts running through his head, all revolving around Jens. He’s scared of ruining their newly build friendship, if it isn't ruined already. If what Sander told him was true, and Jens wasn't the type to confront his feelings and talk about them, then Lucas will. Because he only just got Jens and he isn't ready to lose him just yet.
He parks his bike against the tree on the other side of the street and crosses the road without looking. Once he’s inside the house he sprints up the stairs two steps at a time and rushes past the living room.
“Aren't you saying hi Luc?” a voice yells from inside.
Lucas sighs and turns around.
He stands still in the doorway to the living room, looking at Isa sitting on the couch with Ely crossed leg across from her on top of the coffee table, which is surprisingly not falling apart having to support the weight on top of it.
“What are you guys doing?” he asks.
Ely holds up his phone, “showing Isa some music I’m working on.” Lucas only just now notices they're both wearing an airpod.
“Cool,” he nods his head, he would love to hear it, but not now. “Is Jens home?”
“In his room I believe,” Isa answers and quickly glances at Ely. “Is everything okay again?”
Lucas looks down at his dirty converse. “No, not yet.”
“Go talk to him, please,” Ely says. “The tension between you two is not amusing anymore.” He sends Lucas cheeky grin, who rolls his eyes before walking away.
“Goodluck!” Isa shouts after him.
He slowly makes his way up the stairs, he’s not in a hurry anymore. Once he reaches Jens’ room his heart is beating louder than usual and he has to take a deep breath before lifting up his arm, he holds it in the air for a few seconds, debating on whether he should walk away, but then he knocks on the bedroom door.
“Yes?” Jens calls out from inside.
Lucas opens the door slightly, just enough so he can peak his head inside, he doesn't want to barge in. “It's me.”
Jens is sitting on his bed, laptop propped up on his lap. He’s wearing his red hoodie, with the hood up, a look that makes Lucas’ heart flutter slightly. He looks up from his screen and stares at Lucas, who tries to read his expression, but Jens’ face is blank.
Then Jens smiles at him, not his usual bright smile that makes his eyes crinkle but a smile nonetheless.
“Come in,” He says as he closes his laptop and puts it beside him on the bed.
Lucas closes the door behind him and walks towards the bed, he wants to sit down but decides against it. He looks around the room, it's the first time he's actually been inside. It's slightly messy, there are some clothes scattered across the floor, books piled on top of his desk. A small keyboard stands next to his bed and there are pictures taped to the wall, of what Lucas assumes are his friends and family.
He looks back at Jens, whose eyes are still focused on Lucas.
“I’m sorry,” He says.
Jens’ face softens and he takes his hood off, combing binghis hands through his hair and then letting it fall onto his forehead. “Sit,” he pats the space on the bed next to him.
“I shouldn't have been so rude to Jade,” Lucas says as he sits down next to Jens. “And I definitely shouldn't have told her to leave, that was wrong of me.”
Jens fidgets with the straps of his hoodie, not saying anything. The tension in the room is high and Lucas has a feeling Jens isn't going to forgive him just like that.
“Why did you react that way?” Jens asks, breaking the silence after a minute or two.
Lucas runs a hand over his face and sighs, he should have expected this question. He had given it a lot of thought, he was surprised by his own reaction. He had never told one of Annabells hook-ups to leave, he doesn't mind when Isa or Ely get home at three in the morning and wake up the whole house. It's just Jens. It's only Jens he doesn't want to bring hook-ups home, he doesn't want to see the pretty girls at the breakfast table the next morning.
“To be honest I don't really know why I reacted like that.”
That's a lie. He knows very well why he reacted like that.
Jealousy.
Jealous of the girl who’s waist Jens had his arms wrapped around, the girl who spend the night in Jens’ bed, who kissed him, touched him and who wore his t-shirt the morning after.
“I guess I was just tired and irritable, I was up until late and didn't sleep very well.”
Jens frowns at him.
“I know it's not an excuse, but I am truly sorry.”
He can’t tell Jens the truth, he can’t just say ‘I’m sorry but I like you and I don't want you to be in bed with someone else.’ Because Jens is his friend. Just his friend. And his roommate. Besides that, he’s also into girls, just girls. He can't let his heart be broken by Jens, that's why he has to lie.
“Thank you,” This time Jens’ smile is soft and genuine. “But I’m sorry too, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable or anything, or yell at you.”
Lucas can feel the grin spread across his face and he nods his head slightly, looking down at the light blue comforter of Jens’ bed.
“That's okay.”
He can feel Jens’ eyes on him, he looks up and when their eyes meet they both burst out laughing, making the tension in the room slip away.
Jens pushes Lucas’ shoulder before letting his body fall back onto the bed. Lucas follows him, laying down next to Jens.
“You wanna watch a movie?” Jens asks.
“Sure.” Lucas answers and he watches Jens as he leans onto his elbows to grab his laptop. He takes a moment to let his eyes travel over Jens’ face, taking in his features, his sharp jawline, his cheekbones and the arch of his nose bridge.
Jens smiles at him and Lucas is really glad they're okay.

chapter two, part 2
previous chapter
Jens has been laying on his bed for the past hour, watching the shadows of the tree branches outside his window dance on the wall. He is extremely bored and totally ignoring all the assignments he has to do for school. He texted Lucas earlier, asking if he wanted to hang out but he wanted to stay at school to work in one of the art rooms. He rolls over onto his stomach and buries his face into his pillow. He supposes he could ask Robbe or Ely if they want to go to the skate park, but if he’s being honest with himself the only person he wants to hang out with at the moment is Lucas.
He hears the front door open downstairs, followed by a loud clang and someone yelling a string of curse words.
He gets up from his bed and opens his bedroom door. “Everything okay?” He shouts into the hallway
“No, can you help me?” Isa calls back.
He walks out of his room and down the stairs. Isa is standing in the open doorway, a grocery bag in her arms that’s ripped in the bottom. He can’t help but snicker at the pile of items laying on the floor.
“I really hope you didn’t break my pickle jar,” he says as he crouches down to pick up some of the things.
Isa follows his movement, “Shit,” she says. “I forgot you pickles.”
Jens pouts while getting back up, arms filled with groceries. “I’ll ask Luc if he can pick some up for me on his way home.”
They walk into the kitchen and start putting the groceries away. Jens examines some of the snacks Isa bought, she definitely made some interesting choices, like cheese out of a tube and peanut butter puffs.
“you can leave the veggies out,” Isa says while half climbing on the kitchen counter to put a bag of Lucas’ shrimp chips on a high shelf. “I’m making lasagna”
“I didn’t know you could cook.”
“I can’t” she shrugs “But I’m using my friend Liv her recipe.” She grabs a cutting board out of a drawer and shoves it into Jens’ chest. “And you’re going to help me”
He wants to protest, but then he remembers that he has nothing better to do, and that this is a great reason not to do his schoolwork, so he puts the board on the counter and grabs a knife. “Tell me where to begin.”
She tells him to “just cut up some veggies” so he starts by cutting the carrots into tiny pieces. He gets the idea that Isa doesn’t really know what she’s doing by the way she staring at the back of the pasta sheet packaging. She looks up at him and shrugs, “How hard can it be?”
Harder than they both expected. Isa almost burns the ground beef, Jens is pretty sure he added too much pepper into the ricotta mixture by accident, and he’s pretty sure they overcooked the lasagna noodles. But they make it work, they mix the ground beef with the vegetables and Jens just adds some extra parmesan to the mixture.
“So how long have you and Lucas been friends?” Jens asks Isa while putting the first layer of vegetables mixed with ground beef into the oven dish. He can see her smirking at him out of the corner of his eyes, he really wishes she wouldn’t do that every time he brought Lucas up, he’s just curious.
“A really long time.”
He watches her scoop a layer of the creamy sauce on top of the first layer and he wonders what Lucas was like in high school.
“He’s one of the best people I know,” she says while picking up a pasta sheet and carefully placing it in the dish. “He’s been through a lot you know,” she shakes her head immediately after the words leave her mouth, as if she immediately regrets saying it. “The point is, he’s a great friend.”
Jens smiles while scooping in another layer of the vegetable meat mixture, it’s not like she needed to convince him that Lucas is great, he already figured that out on his own.
He wants to ask her more questions, the curiosity is crawling under is his skin, but before he can do so Ely enters the kitchen.
“You’re cooking?” He asks
“Lasagna,” Isa smiles at him over her shoulder, her chipper expression quickly turning stern when she notices a joint sticking out of the corner of his mouth. “Please don’t smoke that thing in here, you’re going to stink up the whole kitchen.”
He takes it out of his mouth, and pouts at her, putting on his best puppy face.
Isa sighs and rolls her eyes. “Okay fine, just this once.”
He skips towards her and places a big kiss on her cheek, making her nose crinkle in disgust and she quickly wipes her cheek off with the back of her hand.
Jens snorts at the two of them, they have become very comfortable with each other in a short time, in fact, they all have.
“Okay Jens,” Isa turns to him and claps her hand together. “You finish off the last layer and put it in the oven, I’ll go set the table.”
He tips her head at her. “Yes Ma’am”
She takes some plates out of the cupboard and almost drops one while stacking them together in her arms, which earns a loud laugh from Ely, and she glares at him before walking out of the kitchen.
“She’s kind of cute,” Ely says as he hops onto the kitchen counter and takes a long drag from his joint. “Especially when she’s bossing you around like that.” he sheepishly smiles to himself.
Jens frowns at him, looking up from where he was sprinkling grated cheese over the lasagna. “Ely please don’t do anything with one of our roommates.”
“You’re no fun,” Ely huffs at him.
Jens crouches down to open the oven with one hand, the other holding the oven dish and he slides the lasagna in. “I just don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“What isn’t a good idea?”  Isa asks who walks back into the kitchen to grab some forks and knives out of a drawer.
“Uh” Jens looks at Ely, who simply shrugs and holds his hands up like he doesn’t know, and then at Isa who points a knife at him and says, “fine don’t tell me.”
They hear the front door open and shut and the footsteps coming up the stairs.
“Jens I bought your pickles,” Lucas says, appearing in the kitchen doorway with a big jar of pickles in his hands.
Jens feels the corners of his mouth turn up, not only because of the pickles that he has been craving all day, but because Lucas looks really cute in his too-big jeans that are torn at the knees and covered in splashes of paint. He’s wearing the red flannel he only wears when he’s paining and his, usually perfectly styled hair hangs messily on his forehead, Jens thinks he might like it better that way.
Lucas stops dead in his tracks, mouth slightly hanging open as he scans the kitchen. “What the fuck happened here?”
Jens looks around, only now noticing how big of a mess they made of the small kitchen. There were red splashes of tomato sauce all over the white tiles of the wall, bell pepper seeds and cheese covering the ground as well as all the dishes and ingredients scattered across the kitchen counter.
Isa closes the cutlery drawer with her hip, “Jens and I made lasagna,” she sticks her tongue out at him while moving past him.
“You couldn’t have done that without making a mess?”
Jens steps towards him and takes the pickle jar out of his hands. “Don’t be ungrateful Luc,” he twists the jar open, making it pop. “I cooked dinner for you and all you do is scold at me?” He’s teasing Lucas but the look on Lucas’face tells him that he doesn’t quite understand that Jens is doing so.
“I’m teasing you Luc,” He tells him, to which Lucas shakes his head, making the curls bounce off his forehead.
Jens shakes the juice off a pickle and entirely stuffs it in his mouth, barely chewing before swallowing it. “Besides,” He gestures to Ely who is still sitting on the kitchen counter, completely zoned out. “we’ll just make him clean the kitchen.”
“Yeah right,” Lucas laughs.
This time Jens picks two pickles out of the jar and puts them in his mouth at the same time. “Hmmm,” he points to the jar and swallows. “These are so good.”
Lucas stares at him, his nose wrinkled up and he clearly mouths the word “ew.”
“What?” Jens puts his hand on his chest, acting like he’s offended, “do you have anything against pickles?”
“Well,” Lucas sighs, just a tad overdramatic. “Yeah”
Jens shakes his head and takes another pickle out of the jar, only this time he doesn’t pop it into his mouth, he waves it right in front of Lucas’ face. “You’re going to eat one.” He says and Lucas ducks his head back when Jens tries to push the pickle into his mouth.
“Jens stop” He laughs as he grabs ahold of Jens’ arm with both his hands.
Jens puts the jar on the counter next to him and uses his free hand to hold onto Lucas shoulder as he tries to squirm his arm out of Lucas’ hold.
“Just try one”
“Okay fine,” Lucas drops his arm and Jens almost misses the firm grasp around his arm.
Lucas opens his mouth and Jens feeds him the pickle. He can’t stop the smile from spreading on his face as he watches Lucas slowly chew with a questionable look on his face.
“And?” he asks once Lucas swallows.
Lucas nods his head slowly with a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “I’ve never tasted such a good pickle, Jens.”
He’s mocking him, Jens knows he is, but he doesn’t really care.
After that, they have to wait a while for the lasagna to cook. Lucas cleans himself up first, although he doesn’t entirely get the red paint off his hands, before joining Jens, Isa and Ely on the couches in the living room.  Ely is laying with his feet in Isa’s lap and keeps telling her how her hair reminds him of his favourite cheese to which she just quietly nods along while patting his shin. Lucas tells Jens about the painting he’s working on, a big portrait of his mother with bright yellow, orange and red tones. He tells him about this new technique his trying, something with a palette knife, Jens doesn’t entirely understand it but Lucas beams while talking about it so Jens listens and makes small comments here and there to let him know that he listens.
After about twenty minutes or so Isa takes the lasagna out of the oven and Jens calls Friso and Annabell into the living room to join them. They all sit down at the dining table together, except Friso who’s grabbing some glasses that Isa forgot to put on the table.
“Hold up,” Isa says, stopping Ely from taking a bite. “You guys better like it, because Jens and I put our heart and soul into this fucking lasagna.”
“That explains why you two totally neglected the state of our kitchen,” Friso huffs while handing everyone a glass.
Lucas hums while gulping down a bite, “Yeah don’t expect any of us to clean that up.”
“I’m definitely not doing any dishes do you know how gross that is?” Annabell chimes in.
“Fine,” Jens grumbles. “I’ll do it.”
He doesn’t complain though, when Lucas joins him in the kitchen after they’re finished eating and slips on a pair of cleaning gloves.
“You’re helping me?” he asks.
“Yeah,” Lucas smiles softly. “You cooked me dinner after all.”
When Jens’ stomach only flutters slightly, he doesn’t think much of it.

“Get off.” Lucas murmured, roughly trying to scrub the yellow paint off of his hands. One of the downsides of wanting to be an artist, his hands were constantly covered in either paint or pencil smudges.
He enjoyed his first week of school a lot. He met a lot of new people and all his teachers are very relaxed. This place is really going to feel like his second home, just like Sander told him.
He quickly fixes his hair in the mirror, it always gets messed up when he’s painting, before walking out of the bathroom. Sander send him a text when he was in class, asking him if he wanted to hang out at his apartment after school. Lucas said yes, he liked Sander, and wouldn’t mind getting to know him better.
Sander was waiting for him outside, leaning against the building.
“You ready to go?” He asks a soon as he sees Lucas.
Sander’s apartment isn’t far from the school, a 15-minute walk at least. They talk about their day for a bit and Lucas tells a story about the girl from his class who knocked over a supplies cart, breaking several glass jars and spilling paint water all over the classroom floor.
“I felt really bad for her, she almost started crying.”
They’re walking through a part of Antwerp that Lucas hasn’t seen yet and he makes a mental note that he really needs to drag Isa with him to explore the city this weekend. Maybe Jens could show them some cool spots, since he has lived in Antwerp his whole life. So has Friso but Lucas doesn’t like him as much.
“Robbe just texted me,” Sander says, shaking Lucas from his thoughts.
The infamous Robbe. Sander had told Lucas all about his boyfriend on the first day they met.
“He says he invited some of our friends over as well, is that okay?”
Lucas shrugs. “The more the merrier.”
“They’re kind of idiots though, I’m warning you.” He says, making Lucas laugh.
“I have a lot of experience with idiotic friends, so I think I’m gonna be just fine.”
Sanders stops in front of a relatively small apartment complex. “here we are,” He takes his set of keys out of his pocket and unlocks the door. Once the door is closed again Sander leads them up the stairs. The apartment is on the third floor, which are more stairs than Lucas would have liked to climb, he’s embarrassed by the fact that he’s slightly out of breath when they reach the correct floor.
Sander unlocks the front door for them “After you,” he smiles. As soon as Lucas steps into the narrow hallway he can hear loud voices coming from somewhere inside the apartment.
“You’re home,” at the end of the hall a head pops out of the doorframe.
The guy, Robbe, Lucas assumes, because Sander beams at the sight of him, steps into the hallway and greets Sander by wrapping his arms around his neck and pulling him into a kiss. So definitely Robbe then.
Lucas stands there, awkwardly, looking anywhere but the two of them.
“And you must be Lucas?” Robbe asks, once he pulls away from Sander. “I’m Robbe.” He stretches his hand out to Lucas.
“Yeah, I figured,” He laughs and shakes Robbe’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Sander has told me a lot about you.”
Robbe’s cheeks turn slightly pink and Sander presses a kiss to his temple.
“Positive stuff I hope…” Robbe says, shyly looking down.
“Of course baby, always.”
Robbe looks back up and gives Sander another lingering kiss but he doesn’t get the change to deepen it since Sander starts talking again.
“Let’s go meet the rest shall we?” Sander claps his hands together and turns around, walking through the doorway that Robbe appeared out of earlier. Lucas and Robbe trail behind him.
The living room is slightly messy, In the left corner stands a small desk that is covered in what seems to be some of Sanders drawings. The windowsill is covered in plants, a few vaguely turning light brown. A big light blue rug covers almost the whole floor. And a big L shaped grey couch stands in the middle of the room, facing a tv, with a matching chair next to it. This definitely looks a lot more organised than his student residence.
“Everyone, meet Lucas,”  Sander excitedly announces to the three guys sitting on the couch playing video games, too focused on whatever game they’re playing, to lookup.
Lucas immediately recognizes one of them as Jens.
“Wait,” Jens says, rapidly pushing the buttons on the controller, “too busy killing Aaron.”
“What the fuck,” Lucas is taken aback by the fact that his super cute roommate is sitting on Sanders couch, so he mumbles it more to himself than anyone else but Jens hears him anyway and looks up, the surprise also clear on his face when he sees Lucas.
They look at each other for a few seconds, not saying anything, until Jens shakes his head slightly. “What are you doing here?” He pauses the video game, earning a groan from one of the other guys.
“Wait you two know each other?” Sander asks from where he’s standing next to Lucas.
“Yeah,” Lucas says, never breaking eye-contact with Jens. “We’re roommates.”
Sander laughs, “what a coincidence.” He plops down on the couch, tugging Robbe along with him.
After Lucas sits down as well, across from everyone in the chair,  the other two guys introduce themself as Aaron and Moyo. They talk for a while and Lucas finds out that Robbe and Jens have been friends the longest out of all of them. They tell Lucas all about their youtube channel, about the time Moyo and Aaron pranked Jens by faking that Aaron was under hypnosis and making him steal a handbag. Lucas laughed and Jens pouted adorably at him. According to Robbe, their best video was the one where he and Moyo tested their makeup skills on Jens. When Lucas asked to see it, Jens was quick to say no because “it was really really bad.”
Their whole friendship dynamic reminds Lucas a lot of his with Jayden and Kes.
“So Lucas,” Moyo shifts on the couch, turning all his attention to Lucas. “Is there a girl back in Utrecht?”
“If not, we can totally hook you up with some hot ones,” Aaron grins sheepishly. “Oh maybe Noor,” He hits Moyo on the arm excitedly.
Lucas lets out a snort, “That’s alright Aaron, girls aren’t really my thing.”
He watches the confusion take over Aaron’s face. It takes him a few seconds before he understands what Lucas means. “Oh,” he says with widened eyes, “we can totally help you find hot guys as well.” He looks around at his friends. “I’m sure Sander and Robbe know some.”
“Dude,” Moyo groans, shaking his head.
Robbe, who is basically sitting in Sanders lap at this point, just rolls his eyes at Aarons comment.
“Do you have a boyfriend then?” Jens, who has been quiet ever since Moyo’s question, asks while he clenches his jaw, his attention fully on Lucas.
“Nope, I’m very single,” Lucas says while looking Jens straight in the eye.
Jens tries to casually nod and he gives him a small “Ah okay”, but Lucas sees some of the tension from Jens face disappear. Did he just care if Lucas has a boyfriend or not?
No, he must be seeing things. Jens was just curious. That’s all.
“So, beside from Sander and Robbe, are any of you dating?”
“Surprisingly enough, only Aaron,” Moyo says, “but that is just because I haven’t found someone I really like. I could get any girl I want you know.”
Jens scoffs, “yeah sure dude, are you confusing real life with your dreams?”
Moyo looks annoyed but the other boys start laughing.
“Are you guys just living with the two of you or with more people?” Moyo asks pointing to Lucas and Jens.
“You want to know if we live with any girls, Moyo?” Lucas says, “you could just have asked politely.”
Sander, who sits next to Lucas, gives him a fist bump while laughing.
“No, I’m genuinely interested.”  Although he doesn’t sound so convincing.
“We live with two other guys and two other girls, who one of them is my best friend. They are all pretty cool, so that’s chill.”
Moyo tries to casually nod without looking interested in getting to know any of those girls.
“Well moyo, if I were you I would do something with this information as soon as possible, because Jens already got hit on,” Lucas says while first looking at Moyo but then switching his gaze to Jens.
“Ugh, Luc. I don’t like her okay.” His eyes stare so deep in Lucas his eyes, like he is really trying to make clear that he would never do anything with her.
It is silent for a second. Lucas sees Robbe and Sander looking at each other while exchanging non existing words. He can’t figure out what their trying to tell each other, must be some weird boyfriend telepathie.
Moyo breaks the tension. “So, you guys should really show us your place one day!”
“Yeah, but we should first make the living room at least look a bit more presentable.”
“I agree with you on that,” Jens says with a laugh.
The boys kept talking for a while but then started gaming again. Lucas could get along quit good with the boys. He did not just meet Sander his friends, but also Jens’. And for some reason, it felt important that he liked jens friends, and that they liked him.

“Jens! You need to mix the paint first.” Lucas says while walking up to Jens.
They finally found some time to start decorating the living room. All the walls are pure white, so it looks a bit boring. They all came to the conclusion that the wall on the left side of the room needed to be painted. It took them some time to agree over a colour, since everyone wanted something different. Last night they did a voting and finally came up with the colour “cadet blue”, it is somewhere between green and blue in. Friso said that it will give the living room a homey feeling.
So now Jens is crouched down next to the bucket of paint, ready to dip his brush in it.
He turns around when he hears Lucas voice, “what, why?”
“Because the colour is made of different base colours and it isn’t always fully mixed yet.”
“Okay mister artist, what do I mix it with?”
Lucas walks to the bag of the paint shop and takes a wooden mixing stick out. He turns back to Jens and sits down next to him and starts mixing the paint. You can still see some different shades of blue and some dark spots of red in the paint.
“You see?” Lucas says with a grin, satisfied with the fact that the paint indeed needed to be mixed some more.
“Don’t be so full of yourself,” Jens huffs.
“You’re just mad that I was right.”
Jens rolls his eyes and stands up. “Alright, can we paint now?”
“No, I think if we’ll wait just long enough, the wall will paint itself.”
“Omg,” Jens mutters, “you’re really on an ‘I’m gonna make Jens feel bad’  spree.”
Lucas giggles. The sound makes a feeling bubble up in Jens’ stomach that he can’t quite put his finger on. All he knows is that it sounds cute.
“Stop staring.”
Suddenly Jens shakes out of his thought. Was he staring? Oh.
“Sorry…”
Lucas shakes his head with a laugh. “Now get up, we have a wall to paint.”
Lucas grabs Jens by his hand to help him stand up. The touch gives Jens a tingling feeling through his body. Lucas hand feels warm against his, but it is complemented by the cold silver of his rings. His hand is just a bit smaller, so Jens holds it perfectly. It feels so safe.
When he is standing up straight he looks Lucas in the eye and Lucas is already looking back with a cute smile on his face. he realises that they are still holding hands. Should he let go? he really doesn’t want to, but it would be weird to just keep standing here, holding each others hands.
“Enjoying yourselves, guys?”
Lucas and Jens turn their heads at the same time to the person standing in the middle of the living room. It is Isa. Of Course, it had to be her.
Lucas let’s go first.
“I, eh, I helped him up.” Lucas stumbles over his words. Jens just keeps staring at his hands while Isa and Lucas are having an eye conversation.
“Yeah, okay sure. But I’m going to put this tv cabinet together,” she sighs while looking at all the pieces of wood and a lot of different screws in front of her, scattered down on the floor, “this is going take a while.”
“Ask Friso to help you, he is in his room. I think Ely is still out,” Lucas says, mostly to change the subject and make the atmosphere less uncomfortable.
“That’s a good one,” she says while walking out of the living room.
Jens already poured some paint onto the paint tray and is rolling his paint roller over it several times. When he is satisfied with the amount of paint, he stands up and faces the wall, but he doesn’t do anything.
“This is the part where you actually start painting, Jens,” Lucas says with a grin returning back on his face.
“You really are a paint in the ass, van der Heijden.” He rolls his eyes and starts walking closer to the wall. “I just don’t want to mess it up.”
“This is impossible to mess up, common.” He gets down to also grab a paint roller and rolls it through the paint. He then takes place next to Jens. He puts the roller on the wall and starts rolling up and down.
“Just like that, it’s very easy. Try it.”
Jens puts his roller to the wall and starts rolling it up and down. Of course he painted walls before, but he just doesn’t want to look stupid next to Lucas. Which he probably already failed at since Lucas must think that he is just dumb, because now it looks even more like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. He was just stressing about the most random things all at once, when he stood in front of the wall. Like, maybe there was a certain way you should paint a wall that Jens didn’t know of and then Lucas would laugh at him? Or he holds the paint roller the wrong way?
These are the stupidest thoughts he has had in a long time. Why would there be a certain way to hold a paintbrush and why would Lucas care? Stupid Jens, you really are stupid, he thinks to himself. Inside his head, he groans.
“What? Already bored of painting?” Lucas laughs while lowering himself a bit so he can paint a part of the wall closer to the ground.
Okay, so he groaned out loud. Well done Jens. If Anyone could get a price for getting themselves in awkward situations, he would get it.
“No uh, was just thinking about all the stuff I still have to do for school…”
“Oh, you can just stop painting and work on school if you want,” Lucas says a little disappointed because he enjoys Jens company.
“And skip my painting session with you? Never.”
They give each other a smile before continuing to paint.
“It is awfully silent in here,” Isa says, while walking back into the living room with Friso trailing behind her.
“I can put on some music,” Lucas tells her.
“No no, I’m gonna put on some music.”
She walks to the corner with the tv because on the ground lays a speaker. This is one of the reasons they need a tv cabinet, so things like this aren’t randomly placed on the ground. Just like all the wires from the PlayStation, it’s one big mess.
She turns the speaker on and grabs her phone from her back pocket to connect it with Bluetooth.
Suddenly the whole living room is filled with some dutch folk music. Isa has the biggest smile on her face and starts singing along while moving around the living room. But Lucas groans.
“Isa! You gotta learn to listen to good music, nobody likes this.”
“You already told me that a million times, so I’m gonna tell you for the millionth time that everybody has different music taste, Luc,” she says while still dancing around.
“Whatever, my ears are unable to listen to this crap, so please play some different music.”
Jens laughs beside him, “you’re really not fond of this kind of music, aren’t you?”
“Really any kind of dutch music. I’d rather Jump off a cliff and drown then to listen to that for a whole day.”
“Okay, you can exaggerate, Luc,” Isa says while rolling her eyes. “Do you like it Jens?”
“Ehm, well… I uhm. Not really?” he says carefully, not wanting to make his new roommate upset because he doesn’t like her music taste. “I do like dutch rap, but not this folksy shit, sorry.”
“Alright then, that's fair.” She turns to Friso, “what about you?”
“Sorry to disappoint, but I think you’re to only one here who likes it,” Friso says with a giggle.
“Okay, okay. You win Lucas.” She shakes her head when Lucas beams a smile of victory.
“But just because Jens and Friso answered so nicely, I’ll change it. What do you want me to play boys?” She looks at the three guys.
Lucas is the first to react. “Play some from the 1975.”
“You always listen to that.”
“Yeah, because it is good music,” he states. “Come on now, play it.”
Isa opens up her phone and searches for the 1975. “Any particular song?”
“Just choose a playlist.”
A few moments later the Dutch music stopped and is changed to the 1975 filling up the living room. Lucas immediately starts to bop his head to the music while continuing to paint the wall. Jens looks at him for a second, he is so in trance with the music. It almost looks like he blocked everything happening around him out. His brown curls bounce up and down his forehead. Jens loves his curls. They look so soft, he really feels like reaching out and touching them. But before he can make a decision, Lucas looks back at him.
“You like what you see?” he says with a cocky smile.
“I uh, it’s just… uhm so you really like this band huh?” he tries to carefully talk around Lucas question. Because he indeed, liked what he saw. But no one needs to know that. Especially not Lucas. And maybe he self, doesn’t want to know. Because he doesn’t get why he feels like this when he looks at Lucas.
“I think I saw a poster of them in your room the other day.”
“very observant from you,” he says while continuing to paint, “but yeah, I like them for a long time now. Their music really relaxes me and help me through rougher times.”
“That’s cool. What song is playing now? I kinda like it.”
“Yeah, you like it?” Lucas says looking back at him with the biggest smile on his face. Jens thinks that if he smiles just a bit more, his face might break. “The song playing right now is ‘loving someone’. I could make you a playlist with my favourites if you’d like?”
“Yeah, that would be nice,” Jens says, returning the smile.
“What kind of music do you normally listen to?” Lucas asks, sounding genuinely interested.
“I mostly listen to rap music but also some R&B like Frank Ocean. But I maybe have a guilty pleasure for Harry Styles…” he confesses.
“No way, you listening to Harry?” he giggles. “Cute.” That comes out in a whisper.
“You find me listening to Harry ‘cute’?” Jens sees Lucas getting shy. For some reason, he likes it that he is the one making him feel like that.
“I just never would have guessed that you, Jens the cool skater guy, would listen to something like that,” he says in a mocking voice.
“You are a skater dude yourself, you know that right?” He laughs.
“Yes, I’m aware,” he says while rolling his eyes and moving a little bit more to Jens so he can reach a part of the wall that isn’t painted yet. “And Harry is cool though. He doesn’t care what people think of him. He is just totally himself.”
“Do you care what people think of you?” Jens asks, now a little bit more serious.
“I don’t know. Back in the Netherlands, I had a hard time coming to terms with my sexuality and just who I am, you know? But all my friends are really supportive and I love them, but I know there are people who aren’t as happy with people like me…”
“You know that they are the one who have some wires loose in their brain, right? They are in the wrong, not you or anyone else who supports or is part of the community. You shouldn't let those judgemental assholes get in the way of who you are.”
At this moment, they both stopped painting. They are just looking at each other. Jens still has that sweet but serious look on his face. That’s how Lucas can see that he really means what he just said, so that makes his smile slowly return to his face.
“Thank you for saying that and reminding me not all people are close-minded. Just like you.”
“You can always tell me if something bothers you, I’m a very good talker. I could talk all day long. Unless of course, you hate listening to me, that wouldn't really work.”
“I don’t mind listening to you, you have a nice voice.”
Now it is Jens turn to smile brighter, “and I don’t mind looking at you while I’m talking.”
But Isa breaks their moment. “Omg guys, stop flirting with each other and paint that damn wall.”
They both immediately start blushing. Jens turns back to the paint to roll his paint roller through it once again, and then focuses back on the wall. He feels Lucas’ eyes still on him, but he ignores it and keeps painting.
