aloe, belladonna, fern, sage for DS Hel // @royal-dragonslayer-ornstein
ALOE : how does your muse handle grief ?
Honestly? Very, very differently from how others seem to process it. Especially when younger, given her life being built around the tending of the dead and that in their dark rest they know peace. For a long while, Hel saw no reason for lamenting death, knowing what lay beyond, though she understood it hurt others to have their time with a loved one cut short. This actually bit her in the ass at one point in an ask with a Gwynevere in that she got chewed out for not showing due contrition over the loss of others.
It took forging many bonds in the world beyond that she began to understand grief -- especially, I think, at the loss of Artorias. His death was meaningless, and cruel, and wholly avoidable, and there was nothing to celebrate in his passing. Lost to the Dark, there was surely no peace for him. I think that cut her the most deeply at first, and the impact his death had on those he left behind. It was only later on, when alone to think on it of her own accord, that she registered she missed him, and she wished he had come back after all, and that was her first brush with personal grief.
Even so, it has been fleeting in her life. She’s more likely to echo it as per decorum than truly feel it. When Gwyn died, she was more upset for his children than the loss of the king. She grieved that the king never appreciated his youngest as she should have been appreciated, that he never made amends with his firstborn, that he pushed such responsibility onto his already struggling eldest daughter. She grieved his failings and their impact, not his death, a secret she keeps close to the chest knowing how further deified the godfather has become in the centuries since.
I think this silent sense of grief for lives unlived deepens once she takes on Nito’s dominion and is further separated from others. Others will die, in time, god and human, king and beggar, all passing into what is now her keeping -- but she never will. She will stand and watch all things fall, and in the dark of the grave all will be reunited. Her grief is exhausting then, to watch old friends enter her dominion without a word, to see children she once doted upon be broken and put out of their misery during the final sputters of the light. In its final form, her grief is unexpressed but it is powerful, and she presses on because someone must when the rest are gone.
That said, at it’s deepest, Hel is seen to express her grief violently. For a brief period in the story, she’s openly gunning for the Undead after they kill Nito, pulled back from claiming them permanently only by their own undying nature and the firm rebuke of the Dark Sun. In turn, the loss of her beloved, even though they had been separated for at least a few decades, is expressed in the fact she’s hunting members of the Church of the Deep for sport. Just a widow and her scythe, demanding blood black as ichor for divine blood as if it can ever measure up.
BELLADONNA : how does your muse respond to silence ? do they take comfort in soundlessness , or seek to fill the void with noise ?
It depends on the situation, honestly! Silence is sort of the resting state of her home, where ones duties as a servant of the Graves should be done peacefully and with care taken not to disturb the dead. This manifests in a lack of light and treating the deceased with a sort of hushed reverence so their rest will be as comfortable as possible. The Fenito keep their work sacrosanct, though there are certain regions within their Lord’s dominion where the dead do not reach where japery and more open fraternization is encouraged. Even so, some of her siblings prefer to keep their silences, and so Hel is always comfortable with it. Silence, when comfortable or sacred, feels like home to her, and so she cherishes it.
However, she’s well aware that is the way of the Graves, and that the world outside is not beholden to such practices. Sometimes silences can be downright eerie even to her, a mark of the Darkness, a reminder of how far the splendor of a city has fallen. It can be an omen of violence past or present, or a mystery best left unpursued. In those moments, she might retreat from perceived threat as quietly as possible, or fill the still air with song or some other distraction from empty halls and paths.
In the good old days, especially, she sought to fill silences, eager to ask questions and make merry and in some way belong to the world of Light and all its decadence. Laughter was her calling card then, and fast-moving feet as she fled from whatever innocent mischief she wrought in Gwyn’s hall. Yet she loved more than anything to make those around her join in her mirth, whether by word or deed, and so she coveted the sound of other voices, of approval in her actions.
FERN : does your muse believe in magic or cosmic forces , or are they more likely to think their life is ultimately a matter of their own control ?
Magic is real and her dearest companion is a master of the craft. There are energies across all levels of the world which lend themself to those dedicated to their pursuit, and Hel thinks that’s actually pretty neat. Except for when it, like, drives the Paledrake mad or causes women to go missing in the night or -- Okay, maybe magic is far more a neutral force in this world. Neutral in that it falls to the wielder to decide what to do with it, rather than magic defining the user as some assume.
Hel is a staunch believer in accountability and the power of personal decision. be it in magic or life. She has, in the flow of the age, seen a lot of people do terrible things and then blame it on tradition, on necessity, on doing wrong for the right reasons. Perhaps due to her morality having developed separately from most surface-dwellers, she is very against the end justifies the means. Honestly the only reason she didn’t pull back from the plot to keep the flame burning sooner was just because the Undead needed to be dealt with, and at least this way the curse served some purpose. Notably, the second others spoke of using a living child as kindling she balked and abandoned everything she loved and called home after the loss of her Lord.
You can justify your choices through the Flame, through Gwyn, through your Covenant, through your orders, but at the end, all are left with how far they chose to go in that pursuit, and in that they must reflect and, if finally able to assert themself as more than pawn, atone. You cannot blame any force or power for personal failing, no matter if it might help you sleep at night -- or so Hel sees it.
SAGE : what is your muse’s legacy ? what do they want to be remembered for & what might they actually be remembered for ?
There’s actually a little headcanon title I gave Hel that really sums it up in certain time periods. Lunar Shadow -- that is, the shadow cast by the moon as depicted by Gwyndolin. She is the shade and mystery that clings fast to Luna in a lonely sky, the reflection of her will and power. Hel is never her lover’s pawn the way others accuse her, as shown in that she’s willing to butt heads with Gwyndolin on certain facets of the plan and her place in it, but she is inextricably linked to her all the same. Many will remember her as ally and acolyte of the Holy City in its twilight, bound to its cause like marriage vows.
In the golden age, however, she was the Mourning Princess, grey-clad and dust-soaked, a death that was both fair and welcoming. Others cossetted the strange creature, looked to her for amusement she, as already outlined, was all too willing to provide. Many godkin who fled will remember her for that, her good nature and sharp tongue, and a generous nature that adored even the most wretched creature that slithered across her host’s hall. The ending that most write is that she’s still in that city today, entangled in the arms and scaled limbs of that which she loved most dearly -- and for a time, they are not wrong.
Time shifts, however. In a far flung future, her Lord has been forgotten by all but her siblings, and she has risen to take Nito’s place. She’s revered as a goddess of death, Death-Who-Walks among the inhabitants of some far-flung land, black-clad and with a voice like song, ever-watchful. But Gods rise anew, in a land of snow and moonlight, and she is Queen, she is Beloved, she is the future of a people she never quite belonged to, the silk to glove her patron’s iron will. Her statues stand in the courtyards and palace, commissioned by one who loves her and wanted to depict what she saw as beauty. These stand even after that love has faded into opposition. And after her lover is gone, she is Avenger, Warrior, the Bane of heretics.
What I’m getting at here is that Hel’s legacy is different things to different people, from a stately queen of the dead to a curiosity in the eyes of gods. She’s the widow and divorcee depending on whose record you follow in her love life, and she’s both the hunter of heretics who spites the Church of the Deep and the vocal defender of a certain Prince’s choice to damn the Flame. She can’t really be neatly divided into simple lore because so much of what she is seems contradictory. That’s perfectly valid, too, as many that will be reduced to simple legacies were so much more than a condensed story as well.
All Hel wants, really, after she leaves the Land of Lord’s behind once there is no one left to tether here there, is to be remembered as someone who tried for others. Someone who fought for more than the legacy of a fool and the flame he coveted, someone who was able to see the bigger picture and hopefully leave an impact through her words and actions. But then, after all her life was over the extended age, I think the most she hopes for is to be forgotten and allowed to slip safely out of the narrative to make her own somewhere in the growing Dark.

Cat-Women of the Moon
That doesn’t sound like a real title, does it? It sounds like something somebody made up to make fun of dumb old science fiction movies, or at best like it should belong to a parody of such.  And yet, despite the snarky tone of its Wikipedia article (which reads like I could have written it), as far as I can tell Cat-Women of the Moon is totally in earnest.  It was produced by Al Zimbalist and scored by Elmer Bernstein, both of whom did the same jobs on Robot Monster.
A cartoon rocket blasts off for the moon, carrying – as per 50’s Movie Regulations – three or four lumpy middle-aged men and one pretty girl.  After a couple of the obligatory narrow escapes on the way, they manage to land successfully, and a mysterious cave leads them into an underground city where they are taken prisoner by telepathic cat-women!  The cat-women have trapped them by controlling the mind of Helen the navigator, and plan to steal the rocket ship and conquer the Earth.  Our manly heroes are immune to the mind control, but not to feminine wiles or the promise of caves full of gold.  The world’s only hope is that at least one of them can keep his head about him and save the day.
Cat-Women of the Moon is one of the movies that I suspect was considered for MST3K but ultimately rejected because it was too similar to another feature – in this case, to Fire Maidens of Outer Space. Besides having similarly ridiculous titles, both movies are about astronauts encountering the last survivors of an all-female advanced civilization, who want to use them as breeding stock. In both, the evil plan is undone when one of the alien women falls in love with one of the oafish Earthlings, and both contain a gratuitous dance sequence that does nothing but fill time.  Cat-Women of the Moon is actually slightly more interesting than Fire Maidens of Outer Space, mostly on account of an absolutely hilarious giant spider puppet, but it’s still two thirds over before we ever see a Cat-Woman.
Tumblr media
It is impossible to overstate how cheap and shoddy this movie is.  There are moments when the sets almost fall apart as people move around on them – one astronaut almost knocks a piece of equipment over and just leaves it sitting there at an odd angle.  The rocket has roomy high ceilings and corrugated metal walls, with ham radio equipment sitting around on wooden tables and canvas space suits (with helmets that don’t match) stored in lockers that appear to have been stolen from a high school hallway.  The city of the Cat-Women appears to be made of bits and pieces stolen from five different Maciste movies, and a couple of those ‘Family Tree’ decorations you used to be able to buy at Hallmark.
And oh, man, that spider puppet.  My favourite thing is that it’s full-sized so that it can drop on Helen from above with all its totally limp limbs flailing.  I love it so much.  We never even find out what it’s doing there, either – it’s just a giant moon spider, because why the hell not?
Tumblr media
About the only visual that works in the movie is the matte paintings, which are very nice, even when they don’t look very real. Some of the lunar landscapes are very realistic and the black and white photography adds to the verisimilitude.  Sadly, that’s about the only thing Cat-Women of the Moon gets right scientifically. There’s a weird moment where one guy uses a cigarette (yes, they brought cigarettes to the moon) to demonstrate… something.  Possibly the temperature difference between the day and night side of the moon.  When placed in the light, it bursts into flame, which is obviously impossible in a vacuum.  As if to drive the point home, not five minutes later they light a match (if you’re bringing cigarettes to the moon you obviously have to bring matches) to check if there’s oxygen!
The characters also note that there’s a difference in gravity between the surface of the moon, where they have to wear weighted boots, and the Cat-Women habitat.  But why would Lunar Cat-Women, who have supposedly lived on the Moon for two million years, want artificial Earth gravity?  What makes even less sense is that the Cat-Women, who have telepathic powers, resort to slap-fighting each other when they’re mad!  These women can teleport… surely if they want to kill somebody they can just make their heads explode by thinking at them too hard, no slapping or stabbing needed.
That brings us to the biggest and most obvious thing going on in this movie.  I’m sure you’ve guessed it by now – Cat-Women of the Moon absolutely despises women and it’s not even shy about it.
We’ve got Helen, who brushes her hair and does her makeup in orbit, and stands there screaming while the men beat the shit out of the giant spider with their fists.  She’s supposed to be a brilliant navigator but it turns out that was just the Cat-Women working through her.  The Cat-Women’s mind control powers work on women but not on men, and when Helen is in the arms of a man she truly loves, they lose control of her, too – as in The She-Creature, it is his male mine rather than her female one that is able to resist.
The man in question is of course not the Captain, who actually respects Helen, but the gun-toting jerk Kip.  There’s a bit where he manhandles her and tells her to stop complaining because “I’m not hurting you that much.”  The others aren’t much better, as one of them tells a Cat-Women, “you’re too smart for me, Baby – I like ‘em stupid.”  At least that guy dies.
Tumblr media
The Cat-Women themselves are scheming bitches, except for sweet, innocent little Lambda, who decides to betray her entire civilization because she’s got a crush on Doug the radio operator.  This has been happening in stories since the Greek myth about Scylla, who betrayed her city after falling in love with the commander of an attacking army, and it’s been stupid for at least that long.  The men aren’t any better, either.  Kip and the Captain are fighting over Helen when the fate of the world is at stake.  When they manage to interrogate her while she’s not under Cat-Woman control, one of the first things they want to know is which of them she’s in love with!
The movie hates cats, too.  The inhabitants of the moon are Cat-Women not because they have tails and whiskers, but because they are cunning and underhanded, purring in your lap one moment and scratching your face off the next.  They say they want to be friends, but really they just want to use and discard you.
I guess stories like this represent men being afraid that women will realize they can do without them, and like Horrors of Spider-Island, it perhaps inadvertently implies that this is true. The Cat-Women were doing just fine at maintaining a peaceful civilization before these jerks from Earth showed up. Maybe we’re meant to think this is because the men can resist their telepathy – which is built on another nasty stereotype about women, the idea that they’re some kind of hive mind.  How many times have you heard somebody say ‘Women Think X’ or ‘Girls Like Y’, as if it’s genetic?  The Cat-Women, all in telepathic communication with each other, cannot help but agree about everything – and one she’s made contact with them, Helen becomes part of this collective mind whether she likes it or not.
Cat-Queen Alpha’s control over Helen is probably the most effective part of the story.  We know we can’t trust anything Helen says or even anything she thinks, and once the men realize this Alpha is able to use even their mistrust to her advantage.  Helen cannot even trust herself, as she observes when she realizes she should care if her crew-mates live or die, but does not. Not that it wouldn’t work way better if the cure for it weren’t twu wuv, but it’s a good idea as far as it goes.
Tumblr media
Up to the last few minutes of the movie we’ve been building suspense, sometimes in fits and starts, but we do feel like something’s going to happen.  Alpha, Beta, and Helen have run off with the group’s space-suits, and the men are trying to catch up with them.  We’re expecting a fight for control of the rocket ship – and then Kip just pulls his gun and shoots Alpha and Beta off-screen, while Lambda dies tragically and Doug cradles her body.  It’s an anticlimax that just leaves the audience sitting there going, “that’s it?”  And yeah, the next thing that happens is the remaining guys and Helen get back on their rocket and head home, so that is it.
Cat-Women of the Moon is sort of lukewarm entertaining.  The shitty sets and stupid spider puppet are good for some laughs, but the movie’s sexual politics are obnoxious and its ending a huge disappointment.  I can’t recommend it to watch on its own, but it makes for good DIY riff material.  I’m sure Mike and the bots could have had great fun with it.

For most Malaysians, growing up with certain superstitions or taboos are a norm, whether they are founded in logic or just customary beliefs.
Some of us would dismiss them as urban legends but for others, it is a part of daily life.
Seeing that we are in the seventh lunar month and many in the Chinese community observe the Hungry Ghost Festival, Malay Mail takes a look at some superstitions that are still being bandied about.
Stay in at night
Children and women are often advised to stay home when night falls as the roaming spirits during the Hungry Ghost Festival are believed to be out in full force.
Spirits are more likely to be “attached” to the innocence of children and pregnant women.
For those who are still out at night, avoid standing under shady trees or empty bus stops.
The dark conditions are haunting grounds.
Do not carry red or black umbrellas as these colours are favoured by the supernatural, hence seeking “shelter” in those items and you risk bringing the spirits home.
When you are back at a later hour, washing your hands and feet will help get rid of any “trail” or “scent” that attracts the attention of malevolent spirits.
Elders would also tell you to avoid cutting nails at night, as it is akin to shortening one’s lifespan. Possibly this is to ensure you don’t cut yourself under poor lighting.
Getting home before dark is also a common practice among Muslims.
Children are told be home during Maghrib lest they be “taken” by spirits.
We guess this is one way for parents to ensure the children are back in time for dinner, bath and prayers.
Don’ts for pregnant women
Pregnant women are often faced with a lot of taboos, in addition to the many old wives’ tales and traditional practices.
Indians would want pregnant women to stay indoors during an eclipse as the Sun is being “swallowed” by a demon, otherwise the babies might be born with deformities.
Also, pregnant women are not allowed to touch needles, scissors or knives during that time.
Meanwhile, Malays advise pregnant women to not kill any animals for fear of the children having animalistic features.
Also, polong and pelesit (evil spirits) are said to hunger for the menstrual blood of a woman’s first pregnancy.
While preparing the nursery is considered a good way for expectant mothers to nurture their “nesting” instincts, the Chinese forbids the mothers to be in the presence of renovation work, especially hammering of nails.
It is believed the hammering will affect the baby’s looks.
Of course, funerals are to be avoided.
Taoist funeral rites can go on for 49 days, hence expectant mothers should not meet the grieving family or be anywhere near their house.
If it cannot be avoided, they are to wear a red scarf around the belly and carry some form of auspicious charm.
Jungle rule
Remember when a bunch of tourists bared their bottoms on Mount Kinabalu?
There is a good reason why the locals were upset.
The Kadazandusun believed when one dies the soul will walk towards the mountain and pass into the different realms of afterlife — hence Mount Kinabalu is a sacred site.
The community also conducts a sogit (healing ritual) every year at the mountain with seven chickens, seven kampung cigars and seven betel nuts to appease the spirits.
In many local cultures, the jungle is considered a place that demands respect.
One needs to watch their behaviour, lest be punished in some ways by the spirits that reside there.
For example, the Kadazandusun believes sopok (dwarves or gnomes) and pampuvan (leprechauns or fairies) can trick campers into following them deep into the jungle never to be seen again.
Many a times, campers are told to “ask permission” before urinating in the jungle or do not bring back items from there.
This is to avoid being cursed by the supernatural or inadvertently bringing them home.
Asking permission also extends to paying respects to Datuk Kong, a guardian spirit of the jungle.
Do not just sit on any rock formations as it could be the resting place of malevolent spirits.
Best to check with your guide before doing anything in the jungle.
Whenever you are in the forest, you are usually given a nickname as you should not call out to each other using real names.
Spirits are likely to trap you in their deadly realm.
No ghost stories when spending a night in the jungle.
You would not want to offend the supernatural beings by making up silly stories or laughing at them.
Keep calm and say nothing
There are several things to keep in mind when you are driving late at night down a lonely highway or sitting around a campfire.
It is best to ignore if you smell anything strange, especially sweet scents like the jasmine, or hear soft whisperings.
It is said you could be in the presence of a pontianak (female vampire) who is looking to lure you “home” with her.
When driving alone, you should not react to any sudden coldness, strange lights or someone calling your name from a car’s backseat.
Don’t satiate your curiosity but continue with what you are doing.
Whistling, singing and talking to yourself while driving at night are not encouraged.
Wandering spirits are attracted to these sounds and will want to “hitch” a ride.
One’s gift, another’s taboo
For Indians, crows symbolise karma and regarded as ancestors. So offering food to the birds is to pacify the ancestors.
However, other forms of gift-giving are taken seriously in Malaysia.
One wrong gift can cause you to “lose face”.
Any gift should adhere to the recipient’s religious beliefs.
You want to avoid anything that contains alcohol, pigskin or dog imagery when wanting to impress someone of the Muslim faith while avoid meat byproducts if that person is a vegetarian Hindu.
Giving a clock as a gift to a Chinese is considered bad luck.
The phrase “to give a clock” is a homophone of a phrase for “attending a funeral” in Cantonese.
It also denotes counting down one’s days.
While black or white wrapping paper looks nice, it is associated with death — not something you wish on somebody else.
Flowers are great but avoid frangipanis and jasmine.
Again, the scent of these flowers remind people of cemeteries and funerals.
Appeasing ‘roommates’
A hotel room might be a welcomed break.
But again, there are some rules to keep to for a good night’s sleep.
Knock on the door a few times and softly ask for permission to enter.
Be respectful in your “announcement” as you do not want to walk into a ghoulish get-together.
Make sure you mess up both beds, if any, to not leave it empty for fear of inviting supernatural company.
Also, pick the bed that is not facing the mirror, which is sometimes hard to do as some hotel rooms have large mirrors.
Mirrors are said to drain your positive energy.
Try to leave your shoes pointing opposite of your bed. This is to not lead the spirits to you when you are sleeping.
And most logically of all, open up all curtains and windows (if possible) to let in the sun and fresh air.
It is great to get rid of the musty smell hotel rooms tend to have.
Whether you practise these superstitious beliefs, it is fascinating to delve into it to further understand and respect the different cultures in the country.

Let's talk about Renfield
It's interesting to me how consistant the character Renfield is in modern urban fantasy
Like, Dracula is too big of a character to just drop into any world. van Helsing is too big of a name to drop, and usually whatever van Helsing exists in a world is a descendent. Quincy Morris? Jack Seward? Arther Holmwold; Lord Godalming? Mina Harker (nee Murray) and Johnathan Harker?
(((And of course Lucy Westenra is exluded outright because she's a pretty, innocent, virtuous, virginal, victim, who had never had sex before and that is tragic. What a bummer, the poor adult woman girl who died before realizing she was being preyed upon by a horde of horny men vampire. Did I mention she died without having sex? Tragic.)))
It's hard to find any of the hunters' legacies that continue to modern urban fantasy, but Renfield? The iconic henchman? Everywhere. The name is applied to everything from monsters (Such as the undead berserker creatures in Dresden files) to the overall character class (Like in Monster of the Week, where Renfield is a type of minion whose goal is to drive the protagonist towards the monster.)
TV Tropes has an entire page dedicated to renfield and renfield-type characters, and American Vampire found a way to justify Renfields/thralls, claiming that the character came after the name. 'Renfield' meaning 'one who lives at the edge of the field', or someone who was fairly isolated, and a target for vampires.
Vampires didn't have the mandatory human henchman before Renfield, but they damn well did AFTER.
It's just remarkable to me that he persists after all this time. Renfield isn't even that important. He's not, of himself, villainous. He's not particularly active or important. He's a crazy, deluded zoophage before Dracula even leaves Romania, so it's not particularly tragic that Dracula drives a good man insane. He's obsessed with Dracula the way people in asylums are obessed with the lunar cycle.
I mean, check it. The first fourth of Dracula is about Jonathan Harker escaping Castle Dracula. Second and third is about poor, (virginal) Lucy slowly wasting away, dying, and then dying once more with feeling (still a fucking virgin, because that's important for some god damn reason). The last fourth of the book was about saving Mina from certain damnation. They hardly even mention Renfield after he dies letting Dracula into the house.
We're supposed to care about all the hunters, but the only characters that have survived the test of time to really pervade media are a) the eponymous antagonist, b) the nerd and c) the proximity warning.
It's like giving star status to Siri or Alexa for notifying you when your Uber has arrived.
(("What's that boy? Dracula's at the window?" "By George Mina, fetch me my rifle!" "I already got 'em with my texan sharp eye, partner!" "Good man, Morris! If America keeps churning out men like you, we'll all be drowned in carbon emissions in no time in good company!"))

Through the lens of a single colour, Scarlet, from Andrea Hamilton’s Sea Chroma colour system, we explore the underlying structures and cultural reference points which determine how we see. By journeying into the monochrome, we discover how colours cue our emotions, memory, senses and the world around us, and provide us with unexpected and meaningful connections.

Chiharu Shiota, Me Somewhere Else, Image No1
“When my feet touch the earth, I feel connected to the world, to the universe that is spread like a net of human connections,” said the artist Chiharu Shiota, describing her expansive, site-specific installation, Me Somewhere Else, held at Blain|Southern, London in January 2019. Standing in front of this powerful piece, I was transfixed. The Osaka-born artist fills empty spaces with vivid scarlet yarn, in a distinctive triangular schematic; Me Somewhere Else featured an otherworldly lattice delicately touching ghost-white feet, defining how consciousness spreads beyond the tangible, the way arteries spread through a body. Shiota’s work features immersive, networked environments spun out of yarn, often tangled with vehicles like boats, or used possessions, haunted with memories. Her work is imbued with a longing for her motherland and the loss of her future life blood through ovarian cancer. My mother also had cancer and I immediately understood that feeling: when you are willing every cell in your body to win its war against the disease.
Shiota works in scarlet more than any other colour, and for good reason: it’s a hue that has an extraordinary resonance. In the western world its deep religious associations are entwined with displays of power and wealth. In China the colour represents happiness and good luck, and today, Chinese New Year, you’ll see an explosion of scarlet and gold throughout the country and enclaves around the world: exuberant dragon dances ushering in joy, peace and prosperity for the coming year. In Japan it is the hue of life: the scarlet double-T torii (gates) at the threshold of Shinto shrines ward off demons. It is also a red that signals danger, anger and of course, passion. It’s fascinating that one shade of red should carry the weight of so many – and contradictory – signals. It is laden with symbolism: from the umbilical cord at birth and the neural pathways in the human brain, to the familial and cultural connections that bind us together, scarlet is the colour of life: the colour of blood.
Blood cells are made from protein, iron and oxygen. Within red each cell is a protein called haemoglobin, with sub-units called hemes which bind oxygen with iron. So, the more we inhale, the more oxygen mixes with iron and the brighter our blood becomes. This mixing of elements is the very core of our existence. Derek Jarman, diagnosed with HIV, wrote Chroma the year before he died in 1995. I think that perhaps when you explore the prospect of imminent death, you feel more fully alive. With his own senses about to be extinguished, he tried to capture the essence of this experience.
“Each victory of the red cells brings death…for the virus is red. The dance of death. Red plague cross. Red as scarlet fever – the small pox. Red has always embraced the hospital. The tenth-century physician, Avicenna, dressed his patients in red clothes. Red wool tied around the neck protected. Like for like. Colour for cure. Red moved the blood. Avicenna made medicine from red flowers. If one gazed intently at red the blood would flow……RedStopRedStopRedStop”

Iron is the heart of our existence on a planetary level too: Earth’s core is a solid ball of iron, giving us magnetic poles and the ability to navigate. Thanks to iron, humans could explore and, crucially, get back home again. Mars has so much iron oxide – the same compound as our blood – that it appears as a rusty-red. As if to make this connection very clear, the first lunar eclipse of the year rose low on the horizon, cloaked in scarlet. This ‘Super Blood Wolf Moon’ was caused by the moon’s unusual proximity with the earth. In passing through earth’s shadow, our planetary companion acquired its reddish tint and for a moment, all of us were linked in wonder.

Scarlet is central to the Judeo-Christian story: the colour of sacrifice and atonement, of Christ’s blood. In 1464 Pope Paul II decreed that all his cardinals wear robes of scarlet, as they do to this day, both a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice but also a display of power and wealth. Scarlet dye was achingly expensive – in fact the word scarlet comes from the Arabic siklāt, meaning cloth dyed red. The original scarlet dye came from a tiny grub-like insect called kermes ilices, known in biblical times as the crimson worm: 80 kermes were needed for just one gram of dye. The insect’s fascinating life cycle is central to the faith: it parallels the Passion of the Christ, life out of sacrifice. When the female comes to lay her eggs, she forms her body into a hard shell around them and attaches herself to a branch. So firmly attached is she in fact, that this is her last act. The moment of birth is the moment of her death: as the newly-hatched kermes emerge from her shell/body, they are coloured red by her self-sacrificed remains and remain so for the rest of their lives, wearing their bloodline like a cloak. In the last, as her body disintegrates, the waxy white shells fall from the tree, leaving a snowy, woollen effect around the evergreen oak, like little sins forgiven. It’s beautifully illustrated in Isaiah 1.18:
‘…though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.’

If scarlet represents the Passion of the Christ and the blood of martyrs, one of the strangest contradictions is that it is also the colour of lust and adultery – the scarlet woman. This was fictionalised in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s masterwork, The Scarlet Letter. Written in 1850, and set in a 17th century Puritan Massachusetts Bay colony, it tells the story of Hester Prynne who conceives a daughter, though her husband is presumed dead, and for this shame she is required to wear a scarlet ‘A’ (for adulteress) on her dress. Hester’s innocent daughter Pearl is also stigmatised, which becomes the central question: how one can create a new life of repentance and dignity? It examines the notion of redemption – both personal and societal.

Even in this day and age, wearing scarlet as a woman is to make a striking statement about sexuality and desire. Statistically, waitresses who wear red get more tips: a smear of Chanel’s Rouge Allure lipstick is a come-hither – and Jessica Rabbit’s scarlet dress, split to the thigh, a walking promise. As Derek Jarman wrote in Chroma, “Red protects itself. No colour is as territorial. It stakes a claim, is on alert against the spectrum”. It all comes back to the power of blood – that is the sensual promise of red after all, that a woman is sexually mature. Yet our relationship to the hue is mediated and controlled: women must not be flowing, open hearted, and passionate, to only ever allude to the workings of the body.

For artists like Frida Kahlo and Louise Bourgeois, the use of blood red is empowering. Known for her exploratory, sexually explicit works, Kahlo’s cathartic response to finding her lover Diego Rivera in bed with her sister was to paint a riotous bloody scene, red paint spattered garishly all over the frame. Bourgeois painted whole rooms with it, sewed stories with it, and then made a lullaby out of red. Red is affirmation at any cost, it rises above the danger or contradiction of fighting for what we love.

In the end, scarlet is most truly the colour of joy – of being alive, of the rich panoply of human existence, from sacrifice to passion, from anger to love. As fashion designer Valentino said, “Red has guts… deep, strong, dramatic. A Goya red… to be used like gold for furnishing a house, it is strong like black or white.” My meditations on scarlet led from a surreal dawn on 11 April 2012, when after a long exposure I was lucky to capture a mirrored sea and sky of the warmest of light. I thought about how quickly red can be a deep pleasure or a pain, and ringing in my ears from generations of naval DNA was: “Red sky at night sailor’s delight, red sky at morning, sailor’s warning.” If you feel barely alive, listless and rigid – especially in these cold and dark months – harness the power of warm, rich scarlet to bring out your inner warrior. Refuse to be like others driving down the same road, and spring onto your own.

“These photographs aim to capture the fragile, the innocent emotions and developing identities of the adolescent models. In a way, they speak about something akin to a delicate but persistent memory that cannot be fully restored. Images that are enigmatic fascinate me, where there is an intriguing, disturbing feeling that reflects life’s challenges. Wondrous Strange’s photographs trigger within us a sense of something irredeemably lost yet still present.”
Colour Combinations: Scarlet/violet

When I think about rich reds, the combination of scarlet and violet comes to mind, because I see it frequently when gazing out to the sea at sunset. Towards the end of his life, Mark Rothko painted in rich, resonant colours: deep reds, bruised purples, sombre magentas, as if foreshadowing Jarman’s meditation on red at the end of his life. No. 301 [Red and Blue over Red] deep scarlet with a cool band of purple, keys into the beauty of floating fields of pure pigment, and reminds us that how colour is both deeply personal and also a shared experience – colour feeding emotion in the purest way.

How do you think Padmé would be like raising her children? Would she be more kind and gentle or more firm or a mix of both? // Do you think she matches any mythological character (from any culture) and why or why not? // And lastly, what do you think is her superobjective, the one underlying reason that drives her actions, even if it might not ever come true?
How do you think Padmé would be like raising her children? Would she be more kind and gentle or more firm or a mix of both?
If she were given the opportunity to be a prominent figure in her children’s lives during the reign of the Empire she would have been a mix of both. The Empire did not allow people to live soft lives, but one of Padmé’s most redeeming qualities is remaining soft (yet strong) even in the toughest situations. This is something she would try her best to pass onto her children – to know of joy and happiness and innocence but still be able to care for themselves.
But if the Empire were to have never risen then she would raise them to be soft. She and Anakin would do what they could to nurture them and allow them to explore, not let their choices be so predetermined as theirs were. Anakin and Padmé were not afforded many opportunities to be children and they would assure that Luke and Leia would not have to wonder what their lives would be like if they could have lived like any other child.
Do you think she matches any mythological character (from any culture) and why or why not?
Without naming a specific, in general, I would say the general ideology of Lunar Goddess (cheesy considering her matron) but the Moon is this bright light that shines in the darkness. The moon has the ability to bring people hope, something that the Republic and Naboo sorely needed during her time as Galactic Senator and Queen. The galaxy began to head to a dark place when she was a child and she did the best that she could to keep hope and be a shining light to the Republic, even if that weight became excruciatingly heavy for her. And then when she had died the Republic had fallen, the Empire had risen and the galaxies darkest days came upon them – a moonless evening sky.
What do you think is her superobjective, the one underlying reason that drives her actions, even if it might not ever come true?
As a child, Padmé helped refugees flee their home planets from a variety of causes (political, civil war, environmental, etc) and she saw many deaths at such a young age but it never caused for her to believe that she was putting forth all of her heart and energy for nothing. I think what really drives Padmé is her heart and how much she cares for others whether human, alien, or droid. She doesn’t want to see people suffer and sometimes it leads her to make naive decisions.
