I screencaps this part twice unknowingly, been watching this drama in my break time after working out and waiting for my sweat to dry for shower. Yet I always watch more episode instead of just one.

jdorama 2019 autumn
As we head into the last drama season of the year, ratings have been heavily influenced by several concurrent events - the rugby World Cup, baseball and the emperor's enthronement. Several dramas are suspected to have taken a hit right at their debut, and it looks like it'll take a couple of weeks for the waters to clear. Entirely as expected, Doctor X (season 6) went straight to the top of the average ratings for the entire year with a current average of 19.65%. I'm not going to say much about this drama apart from that it's the same old formula, featuring the same old fights between the unrealistic heroine and the equally unrealistic power/money-hungry villains. What's more impressive than the longevity of the series is how cringeworthy it actually is. Grand Maison Tokyo (rating: 12.4%) Stars: Kimura Takuya, Sawamura Ikki, Suzuki Kyoka As soon as the synopsis came out, there were accusations of plagiarising from Bradley Cooper's Burnt. Though I've only read the Wikipedia summary of that movie, happily the drama seems to be an entirely different story. Obana Natsuki is a talented French cuisine chef who lost his Michelin restaurant 3 years ago when a VIP guest collapses from ingesting an allergen that contaminated the food. I don't know if it's intentional, but Kimura's portrayal of Obana reminds me of RDJ's portrayal of Tony Stark, without the sass. Essentially Obana is a genius in his field who inspires both admiration and exasperation in his acquaintances. His previous arrogance and brutal honesty has made his former colleagues wary of him, but he's really just a tsundere ossan who doesn't feel comfortable letting his soft side show. As usual, Kimura is surrounded by some excellent cast members (I think this must be the most earnest role I've seen Sawamura play), and so far the script is tight and well-paced, with a promise of complexity. It's definitely a much better venture than some of the other stuff Kimura has done recently. Ore no hanashi wa nagai | My story is long (rating: 8.4%) Stars: Ikuta Toma, Koike Eiko It's a little like GiboMusu, in that the premise sounded boring but the script and the acting make it a humorous enjoyable skit for the whole family. 31 year old Keshibe Mitsuru has been a NEET since his cafe went bankrupt a few years ago. He lives with (off?) his mother, and seems to have no plans to look for work. Unlike most NEETs we've seen in dramas, Mitsuru is oddly...normal and likeable. While he seems to enjoy bickering over the smallest things, he's not lazy or unrealistic or socially challenged. He interacts with his family with a sensitivity that his bossy sister doesn't have. So far, all of this makes it hard to fathom why he's not finding work, so I hope it's explained well later. The interactions between the family members are cute and heartfelt, and I hope it finds a way to round itself out into a good story. It's so nice to see Toma on TV again. Mada kekkon-dekinai otoko | The man who still can't get married (rating: 11.5%) Stars: Abe Hiroshi, Yoshida Yo Kekkon-dekinai otoko is a drama I've never watched but which apparently has a cult status amongst drama fans. Abe Hiroshi is back as a 50+ year old architectural engineer. It's not clear that he wants to get married, apart from the fact that he is interested by romance as something that he doesn't quite understand but everyone seems to gush over. He's like a Windows user who thinks about getting a Mac just to see what the hype is about, without being sure he really wants or cares about it, but just on the off-chance it might wow him. It's cute and humorous in a very old-school sort of way, but not really something I could relate to or quite understand. I will probably keep watching because I do like seeing Abe Hiroshi playing off against Yoshida Yo. It would be nice to see if it passes the Bechdel's test because even though the two female protagonists hang out frequently, they've mostly been focused on talking about a male ex-partner or the main character.

Heya. One more day till the weekend! I can't wait. Nothing is out of the ordinary today. I've caught up on work. It's not easy to miss even just one day of work because emails pile up.
Me and my brother finished Mada Kekkon Dekinai Otoko today. I initially did not know they created a second season for this! I was a bit heartbroken at the start when I found out he didn't end up with Hayasaka-sensei from the first season. Kuwano is a little bit more thoughtful in the second season despite retaining his eccentricity but you can see his growth after what, 13 years?? Spoiler alert but the ending is another cliffhanger but I saw it coming. Anyway, that drama also made me wonder if I end up like Kuwano in life. I don't really think about it that much.
Tomorrow is Friday so I am in a good mood. I hope I can wake up early so that I can end work early. I may have some booze delivered. We'll see.
Goodnighters!

Avalanche: Pengkhianatan dan Perebutan Kekuasaan Berbalut Baku Hantam
Tumblr media
Drama: Avalanche
Sutradara: Michihito Fujii, Yoshishige Miyake, Yamaguchi Kento
Network: Fuji TV, KTV
Episodes: 10
Release date: Oct 18 - Dec 20, 2021
TV Ratings: 8.6%
Cast: Ayano Go, Fukushi Sota, Yudai Chiba, Takahashi Maryjun, Tanaka Yoji, Yoshino Kimura, Watabe Atsuro, Tajima Ryo, Yamanaka Takashi, Suruga Taro
Lantas, bagaimana Avalanche terbentuk?
Loncatan Karya Yoshishige Miyake
Avalanche dibuat oleh dua sutradara, Yoshishige Miyake beserta Yamaguchi Kento. Sebagai karya Yoshishige Miyake, Avalanche terbilang sebagai loncatan karyanya. Hal ini karena sebelumnya Yoshishige Miyake mengerjakan drama-drama romance seperti Neechan no Koibito, Mada Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, Perfect World.
Go, Yakuza and The Family.

Kuwano Shinsuke, a successful architect, is well-to-do, knowledgeable and good-looking. He is now 53, still lives alone in the same apartment, which has the latest gadgets, and enjoys single life. Although he fell for Hayasaka Natsumi, the doctor who treated him and changed his perspective toward marriage, and even dated, they later broke up. So Kuwano’s heart is shut firmly to love again. He is even more eccentric now, and feels a little anxious when he thinks about the future. One day, the wheels of fate start to move all of a sudden after a chance encounter with some women.

Mada Kekkon Dekinai Otoko” (2019)
Tumblr media
Known in English as “The Man Who Still Can't Get Married” or “He Who Still Can't Marry”, this 10-parter series is a sequel to 2006's (yup, very long break in between) “The Man Who Can't Get Married”『結婚できない男』(Kekkon Dekinai Otoko).
Knowing how sequels usually turn out (i.e. no good), and especially for one which was made over a decade after the first one, I was very apprehensive about starting this at first, no less because some of my favourite characters from the first didn't make it back as well.
But decided to finally give it a go and six episodes in and more than halfway through this sequel now, I can say with relief that while I'm still somewhat disappointed certain characters from the first didn't return (and didn't even get so much as a mention — as if they never existed), I'm glad this sequel manages to retain the vibe of the original quite well. Perhaps it helped too that I went into watching this with low expectations, so things can only look up if your expectations were already low, right? :)
Anyway, while the new supporting cast (in the form of Kuwano's new employees) fail to make much of an impression on me, I'm very happy with the addition of Yoshida Yoh and Inamori Izumi as the two new main female leads.
Perhaps there's a little bias here because I already am familiar with these two actresses and like some of their previous work, but I thought both managed to fill in the shoes left by their predecessors (Natsukawa Yui and Takashima Reiko respectively) very well.
Especially with Yoshida Yoh. I thought her chemistry with Abe Hiroshi was fantastic and at a lot of times, perhaps even enjoyed her character and interactions with other characters more than I did with Natsukawa Yui. Not that I dislike Natsukawa or anything, mind.
And I'm very glad Eiji and Kuwano's family made it back! Especially the character of Kuwano's mother; love that old lady and the actress (Kusabue Mitsuko) who played her too.
Also, special mention goes to the production team for putting care into recreating Kuwano's flat and office (and Kuwano's sister's house), making it much the same as the original. It's minor details like that that I appreciate; tells me too that at least the MKDO team attempted to satisfy fans of the original and are not pulling this sequel solely because they ran out of ideas for new stories! Hah!
Another special mention goes to Tatsuo the Pug aka, Ken the 2nd! :D
To sum up, I'd say a surprisingly good sequel, worth a watch if one does not mind its redundancy, the somewhat formulaic plot, and the now ruined implied happy ending of the first series! Hah!
Edited-to-add: Binge-watched and finished the series today (6th May). So, I did mention earlier the plot was formulaic, right? Right, more emphasis on the formulaic, is all I have to add. If you are already a fan of the first season like me, you would recognize the obvious similarities to the first season. There's really nothing new added in terms of character or even situational development.
Still, that's not to say it's necessarily a bad thing. “If it's not broken, don't fix it” as the saying goes, and this formula clearly works for “Kekkon”, for its strength is not really in plot, but in characters. And the characters old and new, still manage to charm me. :)
