mid-year book freakout tag

I’ve read 81 books so far this year! I like to look back on my last half of the year and see what kind of books have stuck with me! I stole these questions from YouTube. Here are my answers from last year.

best book you’ve read so far in 2023? I'm going with the Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison (graphic here!) & It's OK That You're Not OK by Megan Devine, Goblin Emperor is about a young goblin who unexpectedly becomes emperor after his estranged father dies. It's about fantasy politics and learning court intrigue, but it's also about kindness. It's OK is about grief and I felt very seen.

best sequel you’ve read so far in 2023? Don't Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones (graphic here). This series is about Jade Daniels, an outcast Indigenous teen who is obsessed with slasher movies. She begins to recognize the signs of an impending slasher coming to her town, and she attempts to stop it.

new release you haven’t read yet, but want to: Painted Devils by Margaret Owen is the sequel to one of my very favorite fairy tale retellings. To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Monquill Blackgoose is a about a young Indigenous woman who enters a dragon academy. I'm waiting for both of these to come into my library!

most anticipated release for the second half of the year: My two most anticipated books are Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo, the adult debut of one of my all time favorite YA authors; The Reformatory by Tananarive Due, an absolute staple author of horror. I read a nonfiction book based on a similar real-life event and I know Due is going to bring such depth to the idea.

biggest surprise: The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff was a book I picked up on a whim and ended up being one of my favorites of the year!

favorite new author (debut or new to you): Either Tre'vell Anderson for their nonfiction book We See Each Other about trans representation in media, or Jumata Emill's the Black Queen.

newest favorite character: Oh definitely my sweet Maia from the Goblin Emperor.

book that made you cry: Hide and Seeker by Daka Harmon is a delightful middle grade horror, in which the main character is dealing with a monster as well as the death of his mother, and some of the grief stuff made me cry.

book that made you happy: The Witchlings series makes me so happy!

most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): Probably a special edition of The Song of Achilles.

what books do you need to read by the end of the year? Waiting at the library for me right now are Hamra and the Jungle of Memories and Empire of Exiles!

Screenplay: Talbot Jennings, based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: William H. Daniels. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons, Frederic Hope, Oliver Messel, Edwin B. Willis. Film editing: Margaret Booth. Music: Herbert Stothart.

If Shakespeare's Juliet could be played, as it was in its first performances, by a boy, then why shouldn't she be played by 34-year-old Norma Shearer? Truth be told, I don't find Shearer's performance that bad: She lightens her voice effectively and her girlish manner never gets too coy. It also helps that William H. Daniels photographs her through filters that soften the signs of aging: She looks maybe five years younger than her actual age, if not the 20 years younger that the play's Juliet is supposed to be. I'm more bothered by the balding 43-year-old Leslie Howard as her Romeo, though he had the theatrical training that makes the verse sound convincing in his delivery. And then there's the 54-year-old John Barrymore as Mercutio, who could be Romeo's fey uncle but not his contemporary. In fact, Barrymore's over-the-top performance almost makes this version of the play a must-see -- we miss him more than we do most Mercutios after his death. Edna May Oliver's turn as Juliet's Nurse is enjoyable, if a bit of a surprise: She usually played eccentric spinsters like Aunt Betsy Trotwood in David Copperfield (George Cukor, 1935) or sour dowagers like Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice (Robert Z. Leonard, 1940). In the play, the Nurse rarely speaks without risqué double-entendres, but most of them have been cut in Talbot Jennings's adaptation, thus avoiding the ridiculous spectacle of Shakespeare being subjected to the Production Code censors. (Somehow the studio managed to slip in Mercutio's line, "the bawdy hand of the dial is now upon the prick of noon.") Some of the other pleasures of the film are camp ones, such as Agnes deMille's choreography for the ball, along with the costume designs by Oliver Messel and Adrian, which evoke early 20th-century illustrators like Walter Crane or Maxfield Parrish. No, this Romeo and Juliet won't do, except as a representation of how Shakespeare's play was seen at a particular time and place: a Hollywood film studio in the heyday of the star system. In that respect, it's invaluable.

Bob Bellerue est artiste sonore / noisician, ingé-son, technicien et entre autres choses, curateur, entre autres, et notamment LE responsable principal de l'immensissime festival de musiques oufissimo-interlopissimes, ENDE TYMES.

Sa pratique sonore tourne souvent autour des systèmes de rétroaction résonnante, utilisant des instruments, des objets, des enregistrements et des espaces amplifiés, en combinaison avec des composants électroniques et des logiciels écrits dans le langage de programmation de synthèse audio Supercollider.

Au cours des 30 dernières années, il a été impliqué dans la création et la présentation d'un large éventail d'activités sonores – entre noise, art sonore, musique expérimentale, percussions junk metal, gamelan balinais, bandes son pour la danse/théâtre/vidéo/art de la performance et installations vidéo / son.

Dans une pièce spécialement composée pour Le Non_Jazz aux Nautes, elles s'aventureront dans le domaine de l'improvisation structurée. Conçu pour faire écho aux pousses vertes tendres de la saison, SPRINGS promet une expérience sonore immersive. Denton et Fiedler McGinnis créent une partition graphique unique pour l'électronique réactive, la guitare et d'autres éléments qui n'ont pas encore été révélés. AUGUSTÉ VICKUNAITÉ lt Performeuse / collagiste sonore, avec une formation en sciences physiques ( ! ). Elle utilise principalement des magnétophones à bandes pour jouer, enregistrer et créer des compositions instantanées à base de d'enregistrements de terrain divers, dysfonctionnements de la technologie vintage ou encore des sons d'instruments enregistrés dans des environnements naturels.

Sa performance contiendra des boucles de bandes audio et des collages effectués à partir de de bandes trouvées.

SIMONAS NEKROŠIUS lt Artiste interdisciplinaire de Vilnius, spécialisé dans l'art sonore et la construction d'instruments électro-acoustiques et d'objets sonores faits maison.

Son travail est souvent associé aux notions de « ready-made » et de « DIY ». Il perçoit la créativité et les objets d'art comme un processus, réduisant ainsi l'importance des résultats finalisés dans ses projets. En conséquence, son travail a tendance à être indéterminé et transformateur au fil du temps.

ALANAS GURINAS lt Jeune artiste interdisciplinaire, adepte des performances sonores et des installations audiovisuelles.

Dans sa démarche, il explore le son en tant que phénomène textural, les thèmes de l'éphémère et les relations entre divers objets et espaces audibles et inaudibles.

A slightly light tone ( Strained paper sheets, weights, vibro motors, various sound objects )

est une performance sonore acoustique live qui utilise le papier comme matériau principal pour produire du son. Différents types de papiers sont placés entre deux pinces en bois et, à l'aide de poids, sont tendus jusqu'à ce qu'ils trouvent leur état de résonance. En conséquence, différents tons, drones et textures générés par du papier en suspension sont produits. (La durée de la représentation est de +- 30 minutes)

Been eating away at more episodes; and thinking more thoughts~.

The Alchemist: Wow. What an episode. John Pater with the gravitas of older, villainous role (ala Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, or Peter Cushing)-- incredible presence, a real menace, knowing when and how to advance and retreat. Cathy's police force/family loyalty and the pressure she starts putting on Vincent about it, Vincent trying to meet demands on all sides, Father and Paracelsus's conversation (so much better than the "we're alike, you and I" monologues), Joe's contribution (he's definitely grown on me but I miss Edie), THE SUDDEN CHASE AND DRUG SCENE with Paracelsus and Father and the community and Cathy and the Other/Buster (hats off to Nan, genius work building on top of what canon laid the foundations for), Vincent's convo with John Pater, and Pater's baiting, and... all of it.

Temptation: Joe's episode. I enjoyed myself-- the great thing about this show is that all the episodes are solid; and this is solid enough that it bumps it up into rewatch territory. Joe always brings out the claws in Cathy, which provides great contrast to her "starting point" that being around Vincent puts her back in to. I like both; and I'm glad the series maturely shows how different people bring out different sides in other people without overly drawing attention to it. Joe's date (whose name I forgot) was fun, too; and I wonder if she's going to come back. I won't be disappointed if she doesn't, but the storytelling potential intrigues me.

Promises of Someday: This episode is now one of my favorites. Devin is me, I am Devin. He's fascinating, his dynamic as a lone wolf and a wounded family member is fascinating, Vincent's complete ease and familiarity with his brother (and he with Vincent) after all these years is fascinating, and his stiffness and repressed anger with Father is fascinating. Father realizing how harsh he had inadvertently been after Vincent put a mirror to his face (metaphorically) and showed him his faults is beautifully done. Cathy having a hunch, investigating, and finding out about Devin before confronting him is such an improvement to her usual "I'm gonna take you down!" attitude she's used in the past; and her gradual changing thoughts as Devin plays by her rules while still doing his best not to mess up her case (the dichotomy of that bit of his characterization is soooooooo fascinating) was exquisite. Her talk at the end with Vincent, Devin's letter, the backstory, a Margaret mention, learning who Grace was (now I have a backstory to her name from AWTN), the locations, the building tension, the resolution... all marvelous.

I looked up Nan's published works-- couldn't find it on various book site that ship, BUT stumbled onto it from a link to the Treasure Chambers, so that worked out! Keeping one novel primed and ready to consume between S1 and S2 and the other as an eventual fill-in.

Having a blast! The only thing (and this is my fault) I'm confused about are the locations. Trying to sort what is introduced when having read AWTN first-- saw your post with the screenshots and those helped (a lot); but figuring out if they are real or dream locations or both is still a balance. Not worried, because I know all will become clear the more I watch. ;)))

Wasn't The Alchemist wonderful? Tony Jay did such a good job of imbuing Paracelsus with the menace and gravitas the role needed. And yes, Vincent gets stuck in the middle, caught between the rules of the tunnel community and the laws of the world Above - until he experiences Paracelsus' drug for himself and takes matters into his own hands. Please note that even then, he refuses to surrender himself into Buster's violence, merely dodging Paracelsus' attempts at killing him and then trying to drag him safely away from the fires. Stay tuned for more...

Temptation was definitely Joe's episode and allowed us to see just what he was made of. I love his and Cathy's friendly/adversarial relationship, and it strengthens throughout the series. Erica does not make a second appearance and I'm glad for it. She was not what Joe needed in a partner. How could he ever fully trust her? Besides, he's already secretly in love with Cathy. My favorite part, despite my cynical romanticism, was the exchange of gifts in the final scene. ❤️

I knew you would love Devin! How can anyone not?? Vincent and Devin's relationship as children was obviously so strong and it's easy to imagine V's devastation when D went missing. Just visually, I love those few second on the Long Stair when V comes up behind D and drapes his wrist over his shoulder. That, and the hug at the park threshold when they come face to face for the first time in 20 years. Add Father and his secret into the mix and it's a fascinating dynamic all the way around. And poor Cathy, trying so hard to do what's right and keep from breaking Vincent's heart, too. And we get Little Vincent! I can't watch this episode without thinking about V's line in Bimbo: "Fuck you, and would you like to try for the other side?" 🤣

All of Nan's published BATB works (pro & fan) are there at the Treasure Chambers. Yes, read Bright Spirit Descending after you've finished S1 and hold off on Beyond Words, Beyond Silence until you've finished S2. But I do recommend you read it before diving into S3. All her other works on the site are 4th Season with the exception of Bleak Midwinter and A Winterfest Tale. I think I may have told you before, but Legacy and The Tower and the Rose are set in the AWTN universe.
