Eric Garner was killed in New York City on July 17, 2014. He had been with his wife for twenty years.

Artago Damon Howard was killed in Strong, AR on January 8, 2015. He was 36 years old.
Jeremy Lett was killed in Tallahassee, FL on February 4, 2015. He was 28 years old. Jeremy had recently become a pastor. He was a well-known gospel musician and skilled with the steel guitar.

years old, and was nick- named “Big Friendly” while at school.
Christopher J. Davis was killed in East Troy, Wisc. on February 24, 2016. He was 21 years old and engaged to be married.
Peter Gaines was killed in Houston, Tex, on March 12, 2016. He was 37 years old, and his family described him as sweet-natured. Kevin Hicks was killed in Indianapolis, Ind, on April 5, 2016. He was 44 years old and was married to his wife for over 20 years.
Jessica Nelson-Williams was killed in San Francisco, Calif. on May 19, 2016. She was
29 years old. She was the mother of five and was pregnant at the time of her death.
Michael Eugene Wilson Jr. was killed in Hallandale Beach, Fla. on May 22, 2016. He
was 27 years old and a father.
Vernell Bing was killed in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 22, 2016. He was 22 years old and
died before meeting his son, who was born two days after he was killed.

"MARY POPPINS" (1964) Review
Looking at the 1964 movie about a magical nanny, one would be amazed that it took nearly 20 years to make it. I suspect that many did not predict it would become critically acclaimed. But if one is ever interested in the behind-the-scenes production of the film, one would have to read about it . . . or watch the 2013 movie, "SAVING MR. BANKS". I am here to discuss the actual movie, "MARY POPPINS".
Based upon a selection of short stories written by P.L. Travers, "MARY POPPINS" tells the story of how two Edwardian Age children named Jane and Michael Banks, who request a particular kind of nanny after their latest one quits her job after enduring one too many pranks from the two siblings. Their father, a banker named George Banks, is too busy with his career and projecting the image of an ideal Englishman in order to pay attention to them. Their mother, although slightly more concerned about their welfare, is either caught up in the Suffregette Movement or too busy adhering to their father's demands. After the departure of their latest nanny, Katie Nanna, Jane and Michael write a letter describing what they want in a new nanny. But Mr. Banks has different ideas - a nanny who is an effective disciplinarian - and tears up their letter.
However, the children's letter magically reaches a woman named Mary Poppins. She appears at the Banks' home the following morning to apply (or appoint herself) as Jane and Michael's new nanny. Despite his initial reservation, Mr. Banks is impressed by Mary Poppins' firm manner and hires her. With the help of friend named Bert, Mary Poppins introduces the Banks children to a new magical world. In doing so, she also manages to shake up Mr. Banks, his household and his livelihood.
I first saw "MARY POPPINS" as a child and immediately fell in love with it. For years, I have regarded the movie as one of the highlights of my childhood and one of the best films to be released from the Disney Studios. But recent criticism of Mary Poppins as a sugar-coated character of no substance, and of the film as an infantilization of P.L. Travers' work and vision has led me to wonder if my childhood opinion of "MARY POPPINS" may have been overrated. After all, I had spent years judging the movie from the viewpoint of a child. How would I judge this movie from an adult who has spent the last ten to twenty years viewing movies with a critical eye?
As many have recently pointed out, the Disney Studios made a good number of changes to Travers' stories. They also left out a great deal. To point out "all" of the changes and deletions would require an essay. And I am not interested in writing such an essay. Were there any aspects of "MARY POPPINS" that I disliked? Honestly? No. But there are aspects of the movie's production that I wish could have been handled in a slightly different manner.
For quite some time, I never understood why "MARY POPPINS" was shot at the studio's Burbank lot, instead of at England's Pinewood Studios, where 1963's "DR. SYN, ALIAS THE SCARECROW" and "THE THREE LIVES OF THOMASINA" were filmed. Like the two 1963 films, "MARY POPPINS" mainly featured a cast of British actors. Only four cast members were American born - Dick Van Dyke, Ed Wynn, Jane Darwell and Reta Shaw. I feel that if the movie had been shot in Great Britain, its exterior shots of the Banks and Uncle Albert's neighborhoods and the City of London would have featured a bit more details - add more oomph to the movie's visual British style. As for Tony Walton's costume designs, I must admit that I found them rather charming, if not particularly mind blowing. However . . . I could not help but wonder why Mary Poppins' skirts seemed a tad short for 1909-10 fashions. And I also end up wondering why Winifred Banks' wardrobe seemed so limited. Unless I am mistaken, actress Glynis Johns wore only three costumes in "MARY POPPINS". In fact, I suspect she wore one particular costume twice. And Walton designed her costumes either in yellow, powder blue or a combination of both colors. Although I found Johns' costumes rather charming, they also struck me as a bit limited.
Although the film's production designs struck me as a bit limited, I cannot help but admire the film's cinematography and visual style. Edward Colman earned a much deserved nomination for his colorful and sharp photography for the film. Colman's photography also enhanced Tony Walton's pthe matte paintings created by Peter Ellenshaw. Since "MARY POPPINS" was filmed on the Disney Studios backlot in Burbank, Walt Disney and director Robert Stevenson not only had to depend upon Carroll Clark and William H. Tuntke's art direction, but also the visual effects and special effects teams. But "MARY POPPINS" was set in Edwardian London. And since Disney, Stevenson and the film's crew could not film in Great Britain, the production team had to rely on Ellenshaw's beautiful and colorful matte paintings to add to the film's visual look for its setting, as shown in the following images:
"MARY POPPINS" may not have been free of any flaws, but it still remains one of my favorite movies of all time. I had earlier pointed out that some critics have pointed out the movie's failure to be completely faithful to Travers' stories. Honestly? I do not care. It would have been near impossible for any screenwriter to be completely faithful. Travers did not write a single novel. She wrote a series of short stories and novellas. And since it is impossible for a screenplay to be completely faithful to a novel or stage play, what on earth made these critics believe Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi could have been completely faithful to Travers' stories and still fashion a single narrative for the film? Ridiculous!
Personally, I am amazed that Walsh and DaGradi managed to wring a single narrative out of so many short stories in the first place. That must have not been an easy task. As the 2013 movie, "SAVING MR. BANKS", had pointed out, Mary Poppins' purpose within the Banks' household was to save George Banks and his relationship with his children. And she did this in the most interesting way. Mary Poppins used her role as the children's nanny to indirectly affect the family's patriarch. Instead of utilizing traditional means to care for the children, Mary Poppins exposed Jane and Michael to her world - using magic to clean the nursery, an excursion into a sidewalk chalk drawing of the English countryside, and an afternoon tea party on the ceiling with Mary Poppins' Uncle Albert. The children's revelations of their activities naturally shook up Mr. Banks, along with the magical nanny's subversive and cheerful impact upon the Banks' household.
Unable to accept Mary Poppins' impact upon his family and servants, Mr. Banks threatened to fire her. And this is where Mary Poppins, as the film's trickster, pulled off a pièce de résistance. Before Mr. Banks could fire her, Mary Poppins managed to manipulate him into agreeing to take the children on an outing to his bank. However, the night before this outing, she decides to sing a song to the children about an old beggar woman who sits on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral, selling bags of breadcrumbs to passers-by for twopence a bag,so that they can feed the many pigeons that surround her. Between the song and the children spotting the Bird Woman on their way to their father's bank set in motion the chaos that followed and Mary Poppins' plan to save Mr. Banks' relationship with his family. Brilliant.
If the narrative that Walsh and DaGradi had created from Travers' short stories had struck me as brilliant, the songs written by Robert and Richard Sherman seemed even more so. Aside from the performances, the Sherman Brothers' songs seemed to be the heart and soul of the film. If someone was to ask me which song was my favorite, I honestly could not answer that question. Aside from two of them, I found most of their songs very memorable . . . even to this day. One of their songs - "Chim Chim Cher-ee" - was nominated for the Best Song Oscar and won. However, I must admit to being surprised that the beautiful and rather haunting "Feed the Birds" failed to garner any kind of nomination or award. Perhaps it was not as fully appreciated back in 1964-65 as it is today.
Both "Jolly Holiday" and </i>"Step in Time"</i> were not only entertaining songs, but they also provided the background for some very entertaining dance numbers. The first featured the very agile Dick Van Dyke and a quartet of animated pigeons. I found this dance sequence both funny and a joy to watch. You have to see it to believe it. As for the second song, it was featured in a show stopping dance routine that involved Van Dyke, Julie Andrews . . . and chimney sweeps. Between the song, the dance routines choreographed by the husband-and-wife team of Marc Breaux and Dee Dee Wood, and the London rooftops background, the entire sequence is one of the film's highlights.
Another addition to the magic of "MARY POPPINS" proved to be its cast. The movie featured excellent voice performances in the chalk picture sequence from the likes of J. Pat O'Malley, Marni Nixon, Dallas McKinnon, and Alan Napier. Even Julie Andrews and David Tomlinson also provided voice performances. The supporting and cameo performances featured in this film were marvelous. The movie included excellent performances from Reginald Owen as the cankerous Admiral Boom; Elsa Lancaster as the disgruntled Katie Nanny; Arthur Treacher as the kindly Constable Jones; Arthur Malet as Mr. Dawes Jr., one of the board members of the bank that employed Mr. Banks; Hermione Baddeley and Reta Shaw as Ellen and Mrs. Brill, the Banks' gregarious maid and cook; and a poignant cameo by Jane Darwell, who was convinced by Disney to make a brief appearance as the Bird Lady.
"MARY POPPINS" marked the second teaming of Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber, who portrayed the magical nanny's charges, Jane and Michael Banks. It seemed pretty simple to me why Disney had used this pair in three movies. Not only were they were first-rate actors who more than kept up with the likes of Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and David Tomlinson; they also had a great screen chemistry. In P.L. Travers' books, Mrs. Banks was an easily intimidated woman who could barely maintain control of her household. In this movie, Mrs. Banks was a woman more occupied by her suffragette activities than her children. And she was portrayed by actress Glynis Johns. The latter gave a marvelous performance as a woman who seemed to hid her inability to protect her children from their father's neglect with a few sympathetic words and her own brand of neglect.
If I had to select the most complex character in this movie, it would have to be Mr. George Banks of 17 Cherry Tree Lane and the Dawes Tomes Mousley Grubbs Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. Thanks to actor David Tomlinson in his first appearance in a Disney film, movie audiences were treated to a superb performance. Tomlinson skillfully transformed George Banks from a highly driven and disciplined man who was obsessed with order to an affectionate family man who had found a new lease on life. It almost seems criminal that the actor never received any kind of acting nomination for his performance.
Unlike Tomlinson, Dick Van Dyke did receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor, thanks to his performance as Bert, Mary Poppins' closest friend and jack-of-all-trades. Whenever Van Dyke's performance in "MARY POPPINS" is mentioned, people seemed to comment on his Cockney accent. Granted, it was not perfect. But I have never considered it to be a travesty. I have noticed that whenever he spoke words with a long vowell, his Cockney accent seemed exaggerated. Otherwise, I had no problems. And if someone like Sean Connery can win an Oscar for portraying an Irish immigrant with a Scots accent, I see no reason why Van Dyke's portrayal of Bert should only be condemned for a questionable Cockney accent. Besides . . . accent aside, Van Dyke gave a superb performance in so many other ways. He captured Bert's charm, wit and a slight talent for manipulation with such perfection. Van Dyke was also given the opportunity to portray another character in the film - namely Mr. Banks' elderly boss, Mr. Dawes Senior of the Dawes Tomes Mousley Grubbs Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. How often does one find an actor in his late 30s effectively portraying a 90-something year-old man? In my personal experience, very rarely. And to put the cherry on the icing, Van Dyke was never criticized for his British accent, while portraying Mr. Dawes . . . for good reason. Although there have been hints of his talent as a song-and-dance man in his first television series, "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW", this movie really provided an opportunity to convey how truly talented he could be.
Julie Andrews managed to capture the big prize for her portrayal of the film's leading character, Mary Poppins. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Whereas many were distracted from Van Dyke's performance because of his accent, others have lamented on how Andrews' portrayal of the magical nanny seemed a far cry from her literary version. Granted, the latter was a plain-looking woman, somewhat more pompous and strict. Although Andrews' Mary Poppins was more beautiful looking and somewhat warmer, she could still be quite sharp-tongued - especially when disciplining Jane and Michael. Andrews also did a great job in conveying Mary Poppins' no nonsense behavior and massive talent for emotional manipulation. That one scene in which the magical nanny manipulated Mr. Banks into taking his children on an outing to his bank was just a joy to watch. Thanks to her skillful and award winning performance, Andrews managed to convey the reason why Mary Poppins is regarded as a trickster.
What else can I say about "MARY POPPINS"? Over fifty years have passed since the movie's initial release and it is still - at least to me - a magical movie to watch. Yes, it had a few flaws. What movie did not? But thanks to P.L. Travers' stories, Robert Stevenson's marvelous direction, Robert and Richard Sherman's music, the movie's visual effects teams and the superb cast led by Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke; "MARY POPPINS" remained timeless and magical as ever.

Dean/Merit List Recipients
Alvin Community College recognized students for making the Fall 2017 Dean’s and Merit Lists during a reception on February 20.
To be eligible for the Dean’s list students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for 12 or more credit hours in a semester and no course with a grade lower than a C. To be eligible for the Merit List, a student must have 7 – 11 college-level semester hours during a semester with a minimum 3.5 GPA with no F or incomplete. College-level courses exclude credit-by-exam, nontraditional, transfer, or developmental courses.

The 11 best rookie performances in Super Bowl history
We’ve seen quite a few young players excel on the NFL’s biggest stage over the years.
Super Bowl 54 kicks off Sunday, and rookies with both the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will get their first taste of what it’s like to play for a Lombardi Trophy early in their careers. 49ers rookies Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel, as well as the Chiefs’ Mecole Hardman and Khalen Saunders have been key to both teams’ success this season.
They’ll be looking to join a list of rookies who have put together some impressive performances on the NFL’s biggest stage. Let’s count down the top 11 rookies in Super Bowl history (so far):
T-10. Randy White, DT, Cowboys (Super Bowl 10); Tedy Bruschi, LB, Patriots (Super Bowl 31)
Bruschi and White are the only rookies since 1982 to have two sacks in a Super Bowl. Coincidentally, both of their teams ended up losing — the Cowboys lost, 21-17, to the Steelers, and the Patriots fell, 35-21, to the Packers.
Both of these guys found Super Bowl redemption later in their careers, though. White went on to be the Super Bowl co-MVP two years later in the 1978 Super Bowl against the Broncos. He won the award alongside his teammate Harvey Martin in Dallas’ 27-10 win.
Bruschi later won three Super Bowls with the Patriots during his 13-year NFL career.
9. Andre Coleman, WR, Chargers (Super Bowl 29)
Although San Diego lost, 49-26, to the 49ers in the 1995 Super Bowl, Coleman still owns the Super Bowl rookie record with 244 all-purpose yards. A huge chunk came on a 98-yard kickoff touchdown return, the longest in Super Bowl history at the time:

Coleman played three seasons in San Diego before stints with the Steelers and Seahawks.
8. Devin Hester, WR, Bears (Super Bowl 41)
During Hester’s rookie season, he was immediately put on the punt and kick return team. He shined with five return touchdowns (three on punts and two on kickoffs) to earn All-Pro honors.
In Super Bowl XLI between the Bears and Colts, which was played in Miami, Hester took the opening kickoff back 92 yards for a touchdown, The Colts’ kicker in that game was current 49ers kicker Robbie Gould:

The Colts didn’t make the mistake again, kicking away from Hester the rest of the game.
In college, Hester quickly emerged as a dangerous returner. In his sophomore year at Miami, he set a school record with four return touchdowns and tied a school record with a 100-yard kickoff return against NC State. He finished his UM career with six total touchdown returns.
Hester went on to become one of the greatest returners in NFL history. Throughout his 11-year NFL career, he set records for most punt returns for touchdowns (14), and total special teams touchdowns (20) in league history.
7. Malcolm Butler, CB, Patriots (Super Bowl 49)
Butler had a game-clinching interception off of Russell Wilson with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Seattle had second-and-goal from the Pats’ 1-yard line, but instead of handing it off to Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks passed the ball. Butler stepped in front of a pass intended for Ricardo Lockette:
Butler had another three passes defended and three tackles in that game.
Butler’s story was pretty unique, too — he played cornerback at Division II West Alabama, and signed with the Patriots after a rookie free agent workout. Before that, he was working at a Popeyes after getting kicked out of community college in 2009.
6. Sony Michel, RB, Patriots (Super Bowl 53)
Last year’s Super Bowl between the Patriots and Los Angeles Rams was a 3-3 game until the fourth quarter. That’s when Michel, New England’s first-round pick out of Georgia, scored the only touchdown of the night. Michel capped a five-play, 69-yard touchdown drive with a 2-yard score that put the Pats up, 10-3.
He finished the game with 94 yards on the ground. His best run came on a 26-yard rush in the fourth quarter that all but killed the Rams’ comeback hopes:
With his touchdown run, Michel set a rookie record for postseason touchdowns, scoring six in three games. In fact, he only needed two games to own the record

Michel finished his second season with the Patriots rushing for 912 yards and seven touchdowns.
5. Corey Clement, RB, Eagles (Super Bowl 52)
When the Eagles defeated the Patriots in 2018, Clement had four receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown, averaging 25 yards per catch. The undrafted free agent’s 55-yard reception was the Eagles’ longest offensive play in Super Bowl history:
That also broke the Super Bowl record for the longest catch by a running back. His 100 receiving yards are the third most for a running back in a Super Bowl, and he was just the second Eagles back with 100 receiving yards in a playoff game.
4. Torry Holt, WR, Rams (Super Bowl 34)
The St. Louis Rams drafted Holt with the sixth overall pick in 1999, and he delivered immediately. In the Rams’ 23-16 win over the Titans, Holt finished with seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. The receiving yardage set a rookie Super Bowl record, and his 9-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter gave the Rams a 16-0 lead.

He kept the Super Bowl momentum going and led the NFL in receiving in his second season and again in 2003. He went on to have an 11-year NFL career, including seven trips to the Pro Bowl.
3. Jamal Lewis, RB, Ravens (Super Bowl 35)
Lewis rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown in the Ravens’ 34-7 win over the Giants in 2001. The No. 5 pick, who was Baltimore’s leading rusher that season, scored in the game’s fourth quarter. He completely steamrolled a defender on his way into the end zone:
The run was called a touchdown on the field, but was challenged by Giants head coach Jim Fassel. It looked as if Lewis might’ve dropped the ball before it crossed the plane of the goal line:
The run was ultimately upheld after review.
Lewis missed his second year with a knee injury, but he played five more years after that with Baltimore. He then played three seasons with the Cleveland Browns through 2009.
2. Chris Matthews, WR, Seahawks (Super Bowl 49)
Matthews had 109 yards on four receptions and a touchdown against the Patriots in 2015. He averaged 27 yards per catch and was Seattle’s best offensive weapon on the night.

Unlike the other names on this list, Matthews wasn’t fresh out of college when he finally made his NFL debut. He was called up from Seattle’s practice squad in early December in 2014, and he didn’t have a reception for five games before the Super Bowl. He went undrafted out of Kentucky in 2011, and signed with the Browns before getting released. After playing in the CFL in 2012 and 2013, Matthews was working at Foot Locker and as a security guard when the Seahawks called him in 2014. Via Sports Illustrated:
One day, around this time last year, his phone rings. It’s a Seahawks official, and they want Matthews to come to a tryout. Tonight. Matthews looks at watch, pauses, and says, “I don’t get off of work until 9 p.m. I don’t know if I’ll make it.”
“Alright,” the caller said. “We’ll let you know.”

A few minutes later, Matthews agent calls. “What are you thinking! Get yourself home, pack up and go. Are you out of your mind?!”
Matthews was cut by the Seahawks in November 2015, and he played briefly for the Ravens after that. He’s currently back in the CFL.
1. Timmy Smith, RB, Washington (Super Bowl 22)
Smith rushed for 204 yards, two touchdowns, and had 9.3 yards per attempt on the ground against the Broncos in the Super Bowl. It also happened to be Smith’s first career start.
The former fifth-round draft pick out of Texas Tech had 138 yards in Washington’s previous two playoff games. Head coach Joe Gibbs thought Smith would be so nervous getting the Super Bowl start that he didn’t tell him until right before the game. Here’s Smith describing that moment, via The Undefeated’s oral history of Super Bowl 22:
I didn’t even find out I was starting until we were walking down the tunnel for [pregame] warm-ups. [Running backs coach] Don Breaux comes over and says they’re going to introduce [veteran back] George Rogers but let me start. ‘You’re starting,’ he said. I was like, ‘I am?’
Smith’s first score was a 58-yard touchdown in the second quarter:
He added a second in the fourth quarter. His performance helped give Washington its second Super Bowl victory in franchise history. The team won in a 42-10 blowout.
Smith’s 204 yards are still a single-game Super Bowl rushing record, and it’s also the most total yards of offense for a rookie in the game’s history.

OSCAR JOYO INTERVIEW

IAJM: Hey, Oscar. Before we get into this talk, I’d like to start off by having you introduce yourself to readers as well as myself.
OSCAR JOYO: My name is Oscar Joyo and I'm a Chicago-based visual artist who works in both traditional and digital media.I was born in Malawi in 1992 and moved to the US less than a decade later. I was inspired by animation, video games, movies, music, and art books from the 1999 Tarzan film growing up but graduated into anime, figurative painting, and surreal art as I got older. I continue to be influenced by artists of various disciplines to this day.
IAJM: Growing up who were some of the artists that inspired you?
OJ: As a kid, I was inspired by artists like Akira Toriyama, Alex Ross, James Jean, Glen Keane, and Kehinde Wiley.
IAJM: What makes those particular artists so inspirational to you?
OJ: Sure, these artists had some strong influences on because of how they combine things together to make a new viewing experience. I also admire their rendering abilities and how well they capture realism.
Akira Toriyama was my first influence with his show Dragonball z. His combination of pop culture and fighting films really caught my attention. His way of drawing character was so simple to copy of from that I drew it all the time.As a kid, every kid in my class drew Goku and Vegeta.Honestly, if it weren't for that show and the profound impact it felt on me, I wouldn't be drawing today. I then graduated to Alex Ross with his blend of classical realism and comics which was foreign to me at the time.What makes him great was how he took his passion for comics and realism seen by artists like Norman Rockwell and fused them so beautifully. Glen Keane but more specifically his work on Tarzan is another influence on me. As I got older and really dove into his process and how tedious he had to study animal and human life (keyword: study) to make his characters come to life in his work. Kehinde Wiley with his mix of classic, Renaissance art and black culture really influenced me growing up. He utilised the representational aspect of figure painting so masterfully but what sold me on him was how regal he made his subject matter.It showed the importance of an African American and within us, there is royalty. I can't fully pinpoint what I loved about James Jean but his ability to switch from pop-oriental to comic book to surreal made me want to work with various media. Funny enough, I didn't like his work until I got to college and looked through his "Rebus" book. Like Kehinde with Black culture/Renaissance, James incorporates a traditional style of Japanese paintings with a surreal/representational approach. Overall, what I love about these artists all together is their willingness to study the world around them and then combine things together. For me, it made me embrace being able to move from technique to technique.
IAJM: So now, after having your "creative fire" lit by those artists, when did you begin to take your art as a serious endeavour to pursue?
OJ: I was motivated to take art seriously around the age of 15 when my high school art teachers encouraged me to pursue it. It was a huge push for me since I love art in general and knowing that I can make a career of doing what I love.
IAJM: I like the piece of work you recently created inspired by the Marvel Comics Hip Hop variant series - the Danny Brown x Incredible Hulk piece is amazing. Have you contacted anyone from Marvel Comics about officially collaborating with their variant series?
OJ: Thank you very much. Haha, unfortunately, I haven't been contacted by Marvel (yet). It would be cool if they contacted me since I have additional ideas for more variant covers.
IAJM: What's a typical day in the life of Oscar Joyo like?
OJ: My typical day is broken up into 3 branches but simply: I get up, go to work, come back to spend time with my roommates, draw and paint, then sleep or stay up if I had too much caffeine throughout the day. B.Drawing until I can't draw anymore, drinking coffee, and researching more art C.Attempting to leave the house but stay inside because something about the drawing doesn't look right.
IAJM: What big projects do you have planned for 2017?
OJ: Currently, I'm working on issue #2 of Nebula Creatives' Lab99 graphic novel, which should be out during the summer of this year. Outside of that and drawing/painting constantly, I'll be making a new body of work. More details to come once I get settled with additional ideas but for now.I'll be playing with music and art. This approach was tested on a recent drawing entitled Jungles LP1, and I plan to make more like it over the coming months.
IAJM: What can you tell us about Nebula Creatives’ Lab99? What the graphic novel about? Where can people find it?
OJ: Lab99 is sci-fi graphic series mainly about a Thai woman who wants to break out of being a regular person to search for extraterrestrial life.Through her experience of doing so, we see her handle each encounter and become more in tune with alien life. Currently, we are working on the prologue, which is 3 issues about one of the key characters, who is alien and how he lost contact with his kind as he crashes into planet Earth. IAJM: Aside from working on this the comic, do you commission work? If so, where can people go to reach you?

IAJM: Let's look ahead to the future: 5.10.15. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 15 years?
OJ: Haha, I've thought about this quite a bit actually. Within 5 years, I want to have my MFA in studio arts or illustration. During that time I'd have a strong gallery, illustration, and web presence.I'm doing well as a freelancer and I'm able to split time as a fine artist and illustrator. In 10 years, take it even further with my presence and hope to be travelling a lot. At this point, start considering opening up a gallery or even opening up a fund for high schoolers or anyone who want to pursue art as a career. At the moment, I'm not sure what 15 years would look like but I do know it's going to be very bright for me.
IAJM: Could you describe Chicago's art scene to me? Who are some of the people that consistently putting in work, representing the city? How competitive are the artists? Do you belong to any art collectives? Who are some the artists in your area that you feel people should be paying attention to?
OJ: The Chicago art scene, to me, is an expressive, colourful, and culturally accepting landscape. Even though you get to see it about it anywhere, the beauty of art in Chicago is that it transcends beyond the page. I see work by local artists' work on apparel, buildings, videos, bridges, and such which helps make this place an open canvas for creativity. People like Brandon Breaux, Max Sansing, Sam DeCarlo, Antonia McMan, Hebru Brantley, Colin Van Dan Sloujs, and many others continuously put out work to make the city better. This city is filled to the brim of creatives from different walks of life that it makes me want to be a better artist so I can leave my mark. At the moment, I'm not in any collective but I'm not against being in one.
Some other names to look out for are Conrad Javier, Kayla Mahaffey, Joe Renda, Lucas Durham, Kevin Fagaragan, Alyssa Ecarma, Matt Wojtan, and Erik Lindquist. Of course, there are a lot more around the city so I highly recommend checking their Instagram and maybe you'll discover more nearby Chicago. Trust me, there's plenty of us.
IAJM: Last question. Who are some people you would like to thank or acknowledge for supporting you over the years? Is there anyone you would like to shout-out?
OJ: Yes. First, I give thanks to God for giving me a wonderful family that continue to support me wherever I go and with all that I do. It wasn't easy but I'm extremely grateful for their tireless love. My inspiring friends, professors, and colleagues from my alma mater, American Academy of Art, my friends and extended family around South Bend, Chicago and especially the ones all over the world who have been on my side. People who have followed my work for a while and have seen my progress. Huge shout out to Eric, Kane, Kevin, Peter, Stacie, Tyler, and Natasha for being weird and teaching me more lessons that I put to use every day (sorta).
