Philippines: Magnitude-6.0 earthquake occurs in Davao Region at around 14:02 March 7
BY: GAB BATICAN
A magnitude-6.0 earthquake occurred in Davao Region at around 14:02 March 7. The epicenter was about 4 km (2.5 miles) southeast of San Mariano. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 39 km (24 miles), and strong shaking was probably felt near the epicenter in southeastern Davao del Norte, most of Compostela Valley, and southwestern Davao Oriental provinces, with moderate-to-light shaking across the rest of eastern and central Mindanao. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days. An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred only 19 minutes ago 40 km east of Magugpo Poblacion, Philippines, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Magugpo Poblacion, Davao, Philippines, early afternoon on Tuesday, March 7th, 2023, at 2:02 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which listed it as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) at magnitude 6.2, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.8. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in San Mariano (pop. 18,700) located 20 km from the epicenter, Compostela (pop. 42,600) 28 km away, and Nabunturan (pop. 16,700) 30 km away. In Magugpo Poblacion (pop. 233,300) located 40 km from the epicenter, New Corella (pop. 20,600) 42 km away, Monkayo (pop. 51,400) 45 km away, Mati (pop. 105,900) 53 km away, and Panabo (pop. 84,700) 55 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
DAVAO! Comelec notes increase in registered voters for BSKE
THE Commission on Elections Davao Region (Comelec-Davao) in Davao City has reported a significant increase in the number of registered voters in the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
Comelec-Davao spokesperson Atty. Gay Enumerables said in an interview with SunStar Davao on May 8, 2023, in 2022, for the month of August, the city had a total of 4,411,035 registered voters. She added that as of March 6, 2023, there is now a total increase of 61,714 registered voters in the city. The increase in registered voters can be attributed to various factors, such as the growing population of the city and the intensified voter registration campaigns of the Comelec. However, she said that there is a notable decrease in SK voters by 11,243. Meanwhile, following the upcoming BSKE, Enumerables said volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections. Said volunteers have conducted various initiatives in partnership with Comelec, such as setting up mobile or online registration campaigns in barangays for voter assistance. They have also collaborated with different organizations to encourage eligible voters to register. “As usual yung mga challenges during voter’s registration is yung sa deadline na ng mga tao,” Enumerables said when asked about the usual challenges the Comelec faces during elections. Enumerables also said that they are already going to different schools, primarily senior high schools, to conduct voter’s education for students. “Ang nagko-coordinate sakanila is ang DepEd (Department of Education). So nagbi-visit sila sa mga senior high every Friday. May mga schedules sila, may mga schools na pinupuntahan. So doon, ini- explain ang barangay elections and who are qualified (DepEd is the one coordinating with them. They visit senior high schools every Friday. They have designated schedules and schools to visit. So that’s where they explain barangay elections and who is qualified for them), she said. With the growing number of registered voters in Davao City, Comelec-Davao reminds Davaoenos of their right to vote and encourages them to uphold the integrity of the election process by avoiding unlawful practices such as vote-buying.
2 OFWs repatriated from Sudan arrive in Davao- MAY 9 2023 TWO overseas Filipino workers (OFW) who were affected by the unrest in Sudan have returned to Davao on Friday, May 5. In a report from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the two OFWs, who hailed from Tagum City, Davao del Norte, were identified as Silas Jomel Mallari and Hamprey Manipi. According to Mallari, they went through a lot of hardship during their stay in Sudan due to the ongoing air strikes, bombings, and gunshots.
He said that he saw dead bodies left on the road. The nervousness they felt, he added, was intense because they were only three kilometers away from the war zone. Mallari worked as a chef in Sudan for the past eight months. According to OWWA, there are 20 OFWs from Davao Region working in Sudan. In addition to the data are 18 OFWs who have been rescued and are just waiting to return to the country. In April, clashes broke out across Sudan, particularly in the capital city of Khartoum, between the rival camps of Sudan military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. This forced the Philippine government to undertake a massive evacuation operation for the hundreds of OFWs in Sudan. Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac is currently in Egypt to help oversee the repatriation efforts of the Philippine government.

The Buay River
29 July 2019 Entry:
The Agusan River is the longest river in Mindanao. We thought it would be a good source of domestic water supply. So, we included in our on-going feasibility study on rivers… Unfortunately, we found out that the Agusan River has poor water quality. A lot of mining are being done near the river. We had to settle for one of its tributaries, the Buay River.

Compostela Valley is renowned for its gold, but I think its most beautiful treasure is the Awao Falls… Just like gold trying to dig for gold, getting there is very difficult, but seeing it is just as rewarding as finding gold.

Prepare for stormy weekend due to 'Auring': NDRRMC
#PHnews: Prepare for stormy weekend due to 'Auring': NDRRMC
MANILA – Residents of flood- and landslide-prone areas in MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), the Visayas, and Eastern Mindanao are advised to prepare for a stormy weekend due to Tropical Storm Auring.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) issued this reminder after a weather update meeting held at the NDRRM Operations Center on Friday attended by representatives of NDRRMC member agencies and regional disaster risk reduction and management councils (RDRRMC) via the Zoom platform.
Currently, Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) # 1 has been raised over Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro (Pantukan, Maragusan, New Bataan, Compostela, Monkayo), Agusan Del Sur (Sibagat, Bayugan City, Prosperidad, Talacogon, San Francisco, Rosario, Bunawan, Santa Josefa, Trento) Surigao del Sur. Other areas may also have TCWS raised as the storm progresses on its path.
Based on the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration's (PAGASA) forecast, 'Auring' is expected to make landfall over the eastern coast of the Caraga region on Sunday morning (February 21) and is likely to take a generally northwestward path, traversing Caraga, the Visayas islands, and Mimaropa. All areas mentioned will experience heavy to at times intense rainfall from the storm.
From Friday to Saturday afternoon, light to moderate with at times heavy rains will be experienced in Caraga, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao del Norte.
From Saturday afternoon through to Sunday morning, heavy to intense rains will be experienced in over Caraga Region while moderate to heavy with at times intense rains will be experienced over Eastern Visayas, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, and Davao de Oro. Light to moderate and at times heavy rains over the rest of Visayas, the rest of Northern Mindanao, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Masbate, Lanao del Sur, Cotabato, and Davao City.
With the country affected by the La Niña phenomenon, there is a high risk of flooding and landslides occurring in various susceptible areas. Local governments of communities located in the landslide-prone areas, flood plains and banks of the river systems must undertake the necessary preparations as prescribed in the Oplan Listo Manual of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
RDRRMCs and regional offices of line departments had reported their preparations including those of the local government units for "Auring" -- the prepositioning of equipment, vehicles, and personnel, plans for the conduct of preemptive evacuation activities, preparation of evacuation facilities and relief supplies as well as the dissemination of warnings to the public through all channels of communication at all levels.
“LGU preparation is key to ensuring public safety against the threat of strong winds, floods and landslides that Auring poses,” said Assistant Secretary Casiano Monilla, Civil Defense Deputy Administrator for Operations.
“We emphasize the importance of evacuation planning, the preparation of relief stockpiles and evacuation facilities specified in NDRRMC Memo 54 as well as the continued compliance to minimum health standards against Covid-19,” he added.
The public is advised to stay updated by monitoring weather advisories and follow instructions issued by their local authorities. (PR)

The Vanity Of Hydrology
“Vanity of vanities”, says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity… All the rivers run into the sea, Yet the sea is not full; To the place from which the rivers come, There they return again.“

Breaking The Rules Of Photography: Using The Right Shutter Speed by Paolo Dala
Create Movement Blur
What might start out as the unintentional result of a shaky camera can actually be quite compelling - and lend just the right mood to your shot. Try shooting at slow shutter speeds to deliberately blur your subject. To provide a point of reference, keep a small portion of the shot sharp. In some cases, if the subject is graphic enough, a blurred shot can result in a beautiful and abstract image.
