Day 3: "I've waited for this"
Fandom: "Reckless" series (Cornelia Funke)
Characters: Nerron, Nia'sny
Warnings: minor character death, injury
Alternate Universe: Shadow King au
"The Goyl need to face this threat as a united people but how can we if the Onyx could stab us in the back at any moment, my king?"
"They will never accept me as a king, Hentzau. Or at least, establishing myself as their ruler would take more time than we have at the moment."
"I don't know if any of the other candidates would be better than Nia'sny."
~~
"You need to listen to me! This enemy won't care if we're Onyx, carnelian, jesper or any stone. To them, we are Goyl and we are a pest they want to see gone forever." Nia'sny merely huffed and leaned back on his throne.
"The humans have been like that for centuries. If we just keep to our realm, we have nothing to fear."
"That is where you are wrong. This enemy will not stop at the entrance to our caves. They will follow us underground and know our home just as well as we do. I have seen what they can do. No goyl will ever be safe." Nia'sny scowled at the effect Nerron's words had on his court. The gathered Onyx were visibly shaken at the prospect of an enemy coming to their doorstep. The shadow king raised his voice.
"I am sure there is no reason for alarm. We will negotiate as is our way."
"Our way should be survival."
"That is enough from you! You forget your place, bastard." He had expected his words to be met with submission and obedience but instead Nerron straightened his back and a vicious glint appeared in the golden eyes that looked nothing like Nia'sny's. He had probably inherited them from his mother.
"You are right. I am a bastard. Your bastard."
"That does not come as a shock to anyone-"
"Your son. Blood of your blood. And as such, our laws give me the right to stand before you and tell you that you are choosing the wrong path. You will doom our people. You should not wear your crown. Which is why I will be taking it from you." A look to the side told Nia'sny that his advisors would be useless in this, as the Bastard agrued perfectly within their ancient laws. When a noble allowed his bastard to live, he had to publicly declare the child as his own. And even though it was unheard of and the bastard children were kept powerless throughout their lives, there was nothing stopping them from exercising the law to challenge their father for his throne. It was just that most of them were too grateful to have been left alive to even consider the idea. Nia'sny had just been a little unfortunate there. Refusing the challenge would prove his weakness and unfitness to rule just as much as being killed in the duel would. And this opponent was not fearsome enough to warrant wanting to avoid the fight. It had been long since Nia'sny has had to fight his own battles, but a runt he had merely kept for his talent for stealing would be no challenge. The pure, stronger blood of the Onyx would clearly triumph.
"Prozny", he addressed the advisor next to him while he pushed himself up, "we are going to need a new spy after today. Assemble a list of candidates."
~~
Nerron felt his lungs burn with the effort of breathing through the pain while pressing a hand against the wound in his side. His fingers were slick with blood. His own, his father's... similar enough to allow him to start this fight. His body started to tremble, but he couldn't allow the shock to take over just yet. Not before he finished this.
Yes, Nia'sny had gotten a good hit in but that had been just before Nerron had shoved his opponent off balance and sent him rolling over the edge of the narrow and narrow ledge leading far out over the lake dozens of meters below them. When Nerron limped over, it appeared that Nia'sny had not quite fallen yet and instead managed to dig his claws into the stone and stayed hanging by his hands.
"Son! Pull me up!" Nerron's wheezing laugh ended in a gasp of pain.
"That... would really defeat the purpose of this whole thing."
"I swear that I will give up my crown for you if you spare my life. You don't have to do this."
"You never had to murder children here, either. You never had to tell me that I was too weak to be a soldier and too ugly to be a whore and that the only reason I was left alive was that you would be able to make use of someone who was good at stealing. I've waited for this. Every time you had me watch someone suffer and die, every time you hurt me."
"Don't you see, then? You hate me because you are not like me! You have never enjoyed the pain of others and you never reveled in taking a life."
"That's true. But there is an exception to every rule. Because I will enjoy this very much." With one quick movement of Nerron's foot, the black fingers slipped off the ledge and Nia'sny tumbled down towards the lake that had swallowed so many children over the centuries.

So to start out I’ll explain why this is formatted like this. So Tumblr did that thing it does where it shows you a post from a tag you follow and the post was for the “Sarah Palmer” tag. This tag has some negative things about Palmer and I asked the person to not tag posts that are negative about a character with that character. Basic etiquette for others in a fandom. Well that person didn’t want to see them as being negative about Palmer and when I again asked them to remove the tag they called me “annoyingly persistent” and blocked me.  But at this point I had things I actually wanted to say about the post and the attitude they had toward content of game series that I took a screen shot so I’ll be posting that and then replying. Their name is removed because what I have to say is more about the attitude that they present than them.
Tumblr media
So I want to start with the fact that it is ridiculous to only consider a character in the window of a single game. That’s simply not how characters are developed in a large series like Halo. Saying that you can’t be asked or referenced to other material beside one singular game is like saying that you’ll only consider a character and who they are in season one when someone is trying to point you to an episode in season 4 that gives you more understanding. Not all of a story is in one media and it’s really crazy to consider official media of a series as less because it’s a different form of media. I’ll get more to that in the second point I want to make but the idea that because a series started as a game, which it should be noted was released with Fall of Reach so it was always also a book, is to ignore that that is official media. The books and comics are a part of the story that is being told. And particularly with the EU media around the time of Halo 4 it was even more intertwined. Like Escalation is a literal continuation of Spartan Ops. To say you won’t reference any of the comics is to ignore that that is half of the story of Spartan Ops. It reeks more of elitism to not take all media into account. It reads as though the comics and books are considered less than the games even though they’re all canon. This is a fault in plenty of fandoms where official books or comics are released and people seem to feel they’re above them because they aren’t a video game. If media is official it is equal to the games when it comes to examining characters.
Now on to my second point which is the place that stories told in comics and books have in large series like Halo. Comics and books are able to tell stories that would make for shitty games. The first entire fourth of Fall of Reach is the story of the start of the Spartan IIs, their training days, and their first mission. That would be a shitty game, but make for an amazing book. The point of media that is more text base and detail oriented and not combat involved. The first arc of Escalation is great but it’s also a lot of dialogue and not a lot of combat so it would make for a shit game. It made for a good comic. Same thing goes for Initiation, a lot of events in First Strike, New Blood, Ghost of Onyx, and most other books or comics in the series. There are also what usually people point to for context of things in the game because their format also allows for more depth of characters and more being in the head of characters which allows for more context for characters or their actions. That is the thing that written words have above medias like games where narration is less common or motivations are less explained. This is best shown by considering Destiny. Destiny has a in game story but it also has lore which fill in gaps, explains past events, and adds depth to some characters that gives their attitudes during the game some context, because games aren’t made as just games any more. To pretend they are is to be suck a decade in the past.
The final point that I want to make is about the way they compare Kat and Palmer. First, Palmer shouldn’t be compared to Kat, she’s not a second-in-command, she’s the leader of all the Spartans on Infinity. She should be compared to Carter or John, leaders of their soldiers. But comparing Palmer to Kat this person actually brought up a sort of problem with how people view Palmer. See the descriptors of cocky or emotional could both be used for Kat, and she’s far from professional. It’s also completely false to say that Palmer doesn’t command the respect of her soldiers when in Spartan Ops they absolutely all show her respect. So the comparison as anything negative really falls flat as Kat is all the things that they claim are negatives about Palmer. The only difference between them is that Palmer is in command, above other soldiers, while Kat didn‘t have authority. She was always able to be over ruled by Carter but no Spartan can over rule Palmer and as happened in Spartan Ops Lasky can’t even always over rule her. She is a woman with agency and without the safety net of not being the top dog. The fact that it’s a negative when it comes to Palmer but those same attributes aren’t negative in Kat speaks more to an ingrained sexism about women in power that I think people often don’t realize they have. Because she’s the top Spartan she’s held to a higher standard while those same negatives are ignored in characters that are lower on the totem poll. If you compare her to John or Carter her “flaws” are actually positives. The reality is that Carter and John both have their own flaws but Palmer’s are able to be more open and shown because she is the final evolution of the Spartans. Carter and John are both more serious and more reserved but they were both Spartans since they were kids, and Palmer was a normal person, then ODST, before she became a Spartan. All of the Spartan IVs are more human than those that came before them and that makes them these more openly human characters. Because yeah, Palmer can be cocky, she has pride in her Spartans and she’s a former ODST which are known for being cocky in personal interactions. Palmer can be emotional, she’s a ground soldier unable to take action to get things done and only able to give orders and watch as her soldiers die. She cares about her Spartans so she shows frustration at losses. It should be noted the person who made the post cited a “emotional outburst” which I could only figure they meant that one singular event where she punched the table after the Prometheans took Palmer away but not only was that only one time but it was a reasonable reaction. Palmer spent like three episodes trying to enforce to others that Halsey was a threat, she then betrays them to have the ship invaded, soldiers killed, and nearly killed her Captain and friend and then even when they’re finally beating them back Jul steals Halsey and her anger is by far the one most believable event in that entire game. She warned people about Halsey, they ignored her, and they’d lost all their gains and the lives of soldiers because no one listened to her. A small sign of anger was one of the one few good moments from that entire game.
Now I’m going to cover this last bit on it’s own because this part actually annoyed me greatly. If you read that post above you might have noticed a particular part that seemed confusing as it being considered part of her “portrayal”. The part where they claim an aspect of her character is that she is “sexualized by other Spartans”. The only time in all of Halo 4 and Spartan Ops that any sort of comment or sexual thing was made about Palmer was DeMarco’s first encounter where he makes a pass at Palmer and she shuts him down. DeMarco shuts up, right away stops any of that and never again is any sexual or even physical comment made about Palmer for the entire series. Not even in the comics, Halo 5, of Halo Assault is anything sexual ever said about her. Note that this also isn’t an aspect of Palmers portrayal. She doesn’t make a sexual comment about herself, it’s a part of who DeMarco is but to blame Palmer for his comment is blaming her for his actions as though being hit on is a personality trait for women. This is plain sexism to consider this a ding against Palmer in any way. If anything that scene was at the start to shut down any idea that because she was a woman that she was going to be sexualized at all in the series.
Well that’s all I wanted to rant about for the day. Remember not to tag characters if you’re going to post negative things about them. It’s simply not necessary. People in the tags want positive posts about that character.

This past week: a summary
1. The season 3 trailer dropped and boy, oh boy...the fandom’s a mess:
• It looks like the girls plan to print a shit-load of counterfeit cash and do one big run to wash it. Welp. That's going to go badly wrong...it's not like Beth is going to want to stop anytime soon.
• Beth's wardrobe continues to look better than last season. Especially those slightly oversized sweaters. And her hair continues to impress, which has been a controversial topic. It's definitely not as good as her season 1 hair but it looks like an improvement from season 2?
• Dean appears to call the girls out on their criminal activity.
• We get a shot of multiple guns (four in the image) laid out in a row, next to ammunition; this is followed by a shot of a black van pulling up with the doors opening and a man gagged and being held hostage presumably, but not necessarily, by the girls.
• Annie provides us with a much needed laugh and kidnaps Lucy’s bird! (”Class II with an animal.”)
• Beth appears to be in the midst of wrapping up furniture in the house. Home renovation time mayhaps?
• Beth sees a man rising from the picnic bench in her backyard. It appears to be one of Rio’s men, played by the actor Carlos Aviles, who last appeared in season 1. She’s holding a black bag, potentially containing washed cash?
• Ruby shows an image of her two children to an unseen person in a store with guitars and other random knick-knacks.
• We were provided with out first glimpse of Agent Turner, armed and surrounded by his FBI colleagues. It looks like there’s an ICE van in the background too.
• Beth and Dean share a kiss, while Beth wears the infamous floral shirt she wore while opening the envelope containing the Dubby returned to be her by Rio (2x07) and during the 20 questions game (2x11). Chaos is a ladder! Even while returning the kiss hesitantly, Rio’s presence looms over the scene.
• The girls enter a graveyard with spades. A little innocent grave-robbing never did any harm!
• Beth opens the door to a mysterious “guest”, while Dean stands in the foyer. “That’s the thing about this gig. Just when you think you’re finished, something new pops up.”
• The girls appear to be visting a grave or a memorial at the very end of the trailer, with Ruby commenting “He lost his life”, followed by Annie pouring her coffee on the “victim’s” grave. Could we see the end of Boomer this season? Or another despised character?
2. The first look at season 3 dropped yesterday!!!
• We got a glimpse of Rio in season 3 (the fandom is collectively 100% sure that this is a new shot). Looks like he's standing in Beth's bedroom, or at least her house. I mean, who else would he be looking at with that expression on his face?
Tumblr media
• The music featured in the season 3 first look remains a mystery.
• Charlyne Yi has amazing skin! Mae has amazing skin! Christina, Retta and Manny all have amazing skin! I'm so jelly right now over here with my drying lotion.
Tumblr media
3. The BTS of the promo shot in the money room was released. Retta acknowledged how difficult this hiatus has been for us! What a queen.
4. NBC universal interviews:
• Manny confirms that Rio is indeed alive (we didn't need the confirmation but it's just nice to hear him say it haha) and that Rio and Beth will be forced to work together this season.
• Reno and Matthew give relationship advice and continue to be adorable beans.
• Don't forget this welcome news from NBC universal a few weeks ago. Maybe we won't have to worry as much about ratings this season as we did last season before the show was renewed!
Tumblr media
5. Manny has had his own photoshoot to promote his character and the show. Eagerly awaiting the release of those pictures!
6. NBC released an official plot synopsis for 3x01 (”Find Your Beach”:
“Beth makes a new friend while struggling to process her guilt over Rio’s death. Meanwhile, the women perfect their latest business venture just as Agent Turner and his surprising informant complicate their plans to launch.”
7. The trailer and first episode of ‘The Influence of Good Girls’ dropped:
• Megan Thee Stallion reveals that her character’s name is Onyx, confirming that she works where Stan works; her character will be a “little rule-breaker. She’s doing things she has no business doing.”
• There will be two further episodes, one titled ‘The Crime King”, featuring Manny Montana, and the other titled “The Perfect Heist’.
8. The fandom continues to eagerly await carpool karaoke with Christina, Retta and Mae.
9. Retta and Reno have done a number of interviews promoting the show recently:
• A clip was featured in one of the interviews; Ruby appears unhappy with Stan’s long working hours at the strip club he now works at.
• The BUILD interviewer acknowledged Beth and Stan’s importance in Ruby’s life. Reno dropped a juicy piece and said that “as things go down”, the audience will get to see how Stan feels about Beth.
• According to Reno and Retta, the funniest person on set is Danny boy Jr, the actor who plays their son.
• Retta said that the girls are going to be a more cohesive unit this season, as they face outside threats.
10.The NBC Good Girls marketing team dropped a 43 minute long video compiled of the vast majority, but not every, car scene from the past two seasons.
