The NFL’s best remaining free agents
Many of the top names have already agreed to deals, but as free agency officially begins, these are the top names available.
The NFL’s official start to their new league year is here, but due to the league’s negotiating or “legal tampering” period, many of the big name free agents are already off the market. That’s because the negotiating period allows agents and teams to enter into contract talks even though pen cannot be put to paper until the start of the new league year.
Last year was a frenzy during the negotiating period, with most of the top players gone by the time the market actually opened. A whole bunch of deals were cemented right at 4 p.m. ET when the league year started, and that’s the case this year as well. Players can continue negotiating with other teams after agreeing in principle to a new deal — nothing is final until the contract is signed and submitted to the league office. But once something is reported as a done deal, there is minimal flip-flopping.
It’s likely this trend — the biggest players agreeing to deals before free agency actually starts — will continue.
That said, there are still plenty of good to great players still out there, waiting to find a team for the 2019 season. Below, we’re going to point you to the best still available — in alphabetical order — at each offensive and defensive position.
Quarterback
Signed: Derek Anderson, Nick Foles, Ryan Griffin, Taylor Heinicke, Brett Hundley, Matt Schaub, Tyrod Taylor Best Available: Teddy Bridgewater, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Colin Kaepernick
Nick Foles is getting paid a ton of money by the Jaguars, and after that the market gets a little bit stale. Obviously, the best available quarterback (Kaepernick) s probably not going to get signed. Another team will surely try and kick the tires on Blake Bortles if/when he’s relesed, while old standbys like Taylor, Fitzpatrick, and McCown are the more reliable of the group.
Others available: Sam Bradford, Matt Cassel, Mike Glennon, Robert Griffin III, Josh Johnson, Sean Mannion, Josh McCown, Brock Osweiler, Mark Sanchez, Tom Savage, Trevor Siemian, Geno Smith, Joe Webb
Running Back
Signed: Le’Veon Bell, Mike Davis, Andre Ellington, Frank Gore, Kareem Hunt, Carlos Hyde, Mark Ingram, Latavius Murray, Adrian Peterson, Zach Zenner Best Available: Jay Ajayi, C.J. Anderson, Tevin Coleman, Marshawn Lynch, T.J. Yeldon
There’s still a strong market for running backs, with young guys like Coleman, Ajayi, and Yeldon available. It’s a strong group of running backs, and even the players below all have shown they have something to offer.
Others available: Ameer Abdullah, LeGarrette Blount, Alfred Blue, Doug Martin, Alfred Morris, Ty Montgomery, Bilal Powell, Stevan Ridley, Darren Sproles, Jonathan Stewart, Spencer Ware
Wide Receiver
Signed: Danny Amendola, Cole Beasley, Josh Bellamy, John Brown, Jamison Crowder, Larry Fitzgerald, Devin Funchess, Adam Humphries, Cordarrelle Patterson, Breshad Perriman, Tyrell Williams Best Available: Randall Cobb, Michael Crabtree, Phillip Dorsett, Donte Moncrief, Golden Tate
The biggest names to change teams at the wide receiver position were not free agents — Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr. were both traded — but there are still some talented pass catchers out there. Veterans Tate, Crabtree, and Moncrief are always looking to prove they still got it.
Others available: Tavon Austin, Kelvin Benjamin, Dez Bryant, Chris Conley, Pierre Garcon, Justin Hardy, Chris Hogan, Dontrelle Inman, Jermaine Kearse, Jordan Matthews, Rishard Matthews, J.J. Nelson, De’Anthony Thomas, Demaryius Thomas, Mike Wallace, Terrance Williams
Tight End
Signed: Dwayne Allen, Nick Boyle, Charles Clay, Demetrius Harris, Jesse James, Tyler Kroft, C.J. Uzomah Best Available: Jared Cook, Tyler Eifert, Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Most of what remains in the tight end market includes veterans who never quite developed as receiving threats or veterans who have a history of injuries. It’s not a great market, one of the weaker ones in recent years.
Others available: Darren Fells, Antonio Gates, MarQueis Gray, Jermaine Gresham, Jeff Heuerman, Michael Hoomanawanui, Lance Kendricks, Marcedes Lewis, Logan Paulsen, Richard Rogers, Dion Sims, Geoff Swaim, Levin Toilolo, Maxx Williams, Luke Willson
Offensive Line
Signed: Oday Aboushi, Jamon Brown, Trent Brown, James Carpenter, A.J. Cann, Jon Feliciano, Ramon Foster, Mark Glowinski, Denzelle Good, Jonotthan Harrison, Bobby Hart, Seantrel Henderson, Ja’Wuan James, Ted Larsen, Spencer Long, Cornelius Lucas, Bobby Massie, Mitch Morse, Ty Nsekhe, Michael Ola, Kevin Pamphile, Matt Paradis, Mike Person, Greg Robinson, Rodger Saffold, Ty Sambrailo, Brian Schwenke, Donovan Smith, J.R. Sweezy, Billy Turner, Daryl Williams Best Available: D.J. Fluker, Mike Iupati, Kendall Lamm, John Miller, Jeremy Parnell, Ryan Schraeder
As usual, teams did their best to re-sign their own offensive linemen. It’s rare that a high-end tackle or guard makes it to free agency, and when they do, they are quickly snatched up, as was the case with Brown and Paradis.
Others available: Jeff Allen, Joe Barksdale, T.J. Clemmings, Chris Clark, Nick Easton, Cameron Fleming, Ereck Flowers, Max Garcia, Garry Gilliam, Ryan Groy, Ulrick John, T.J. Lang, Andy Levitre, Jordan Mills, OT Marshall Newhouse, Cedric Ogbuehi, Tyler Shatley, Quinton Spain, John Sullivan, Travis Swanson, Jared Veldheer, LaAdrian Waddle, Josh Wells, Stefen Wisniewski
EDGE
Signed: , Anthony Chickillo, Frank Clark (franchise tag), Jadeveon Clowney (franchise tag), Dee Ford, Trey Flowers, Dante Fowler Jr., Brandon Graham, DeMarcus Lawrence (franchise tag), Steven Means, Brooks Reed, John Simon, Preston Smith, Za’Darius Smith, Terrell Suggs, Cameron Wake Best Available: Ezekiel Ansah, Shaq Barrett, Markus Golden, Justin Houston, Clay Matthews, Shane Ray
Just look at the signings to determine the value of the EDGE position in the NFL — all of the top players got franchise tags except for Flowers and Fowler, who were quickly locked up.
Others available: Sam Acho, Jerry Attaochu, Connor Barwin, Vinny Curry, Kony Ealy, Eli Harold, William Hayes, Bruce Irvin, Michael Johnson, Dion Jordan, Matt Longacre, Aaron Lynch, Benson Mayowa, Pernell McPhee, Derrick Morgan, Alex Okafor, Nick Perry, Frostee Rucker, Derrick Shelby, Frank Zombo
Defensive Tackle
Signed: Tyson Alualu, Henry Anderson, Angelo Blackson, Carl Davis, Johnathan Hankins, Margus Hunt, Malik Jackson, Grady Jarrett (franchise tag), Jordan Phillips, Sheldon Richardson, Shamar Stephen Best Available: Christian Covington, Timmy Jernigan, Corey Liuget, Darius Philon, Ndamukong Suh, Muhammad Wilkerson
There weren’t many top-end defensive tackle talents available in free agency. The ones who have had recent success on the field either agreed to terms quickly, or were given the franchise tag.
Others available: Allen Bailey, Malcom Brown, Tyeler Davison, Dominique Easley, Mario Edwards, Rodney Gunter, Ziggy Hood, Ricky Jean-Francois, Zach Kerr, Brandon Mebane, Earl Mitchell, Haloti Ngata, Mike Pennel, Ahtyba Rubin, Danny Shelton, Brent Urban
Linebacker
Signed: Kwon Alexander, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Anthony Barr, Preston Brown, Deone Bucannon, Bruce Carter, Thomas Davis, Jordan Hicks, Justin March-Lillard, C.J. Mosley, Denzel Perryman, Craig Robertson, Adarius Taylor, Damien Wilson, Paul Worrilow Best Available: Mark Barron, Jamie Collins, Gerald Hodges, Brandon Marshall, K.J. Wright
C.J. Mosley, Kwon Alexander, and Anthony Barr got big-time deals to kick off free agency and there’s still a few quality players left on the market — especially for teams looking for run stoppers.
Others available: Stephone Anthony, Josh Bynes, Will Compton, Kyle Emanuel, L.J. Fort, Najee Goode, Mike Hull, Mychal Kendricks, Cameron Lynch, Kevin Minter, Mark Nzeocha, Kevin Pierre-Louis, Vincent Rey, Kelvin Sheppard, Nathan Stupar, Manti Te’o, Ramik Wilson
Cornerback
Signed: Robert Alford, Justin Coleman, Pierre Desir, Kareem Jackson, Kevin Johnson, Jason McCourty, Steven Nelson, Darryl Roberts, Bradley Roby, Eric Rowe, Buster Skrine, Blidi Wreh-Wilson Best Available: Ronald Darby, Darqueze Dennard, Jason Verrett
There weren’t many big name cornerbacks on the market this year, but there are still a few names that can help people. Teams looking for a quality cornerback that isn’t a world-beater, but still effective should be able to find some value in free agency.
Others available: Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Bashaud Breeland, Tramaine Brock, Morris Claiborne, E.J. Gaines, Phillip Gaines, Brent Grimes, Davon House, Nevin Lawson, Tony Lippett, Rashaan Melvin, Captain Munnerlyn, Brian Poole, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Orlando Scandrick, Sam Shields, B.W. Webb, Kayvon Webster, Shareece Wright
Safety
Signed: Adrian Amos, Chris Banjo, Antoine Bethea, Landon Collins, Tashaun Gipson, Colin Jones, LaMarcus Joyner, Tyrann Mathieu, Eric Reid, Earl Thomas, Kenny Vaccaro, Jaylen Watkins, Eric Weddle Best Available: Tre Boston, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Johnathan Cyprien, Glover Quin, Jimmie Ward
Yet another strong year for the safety position, and this time, they didn’t wait around to get deals done. Big names like Landon Collins and Tyrann Mathieu made it to the open market, and quickly agreed to deals with their new teams. However, there is still some meat left on the bone at the position.
Others available: Mike Adams, Jahleel Addae, Kurt Coleman, Chris Conte, Clayton Geathers, Marcus Gilchrist, George Iloka, Kendrick Lewis, Mike Mitchell, Reggie Nelson, Ron Parker, Adrian Phillips, Curtis Riley, Andrew Sendejo, Darian Stewart

1500-1599 Recap Part 78:
Kei became a toddler and Parnell became a child. Piers and Bartholomew became teenagers.
If Bartholomew had lived beyond his teen years he would have been the first Carlisle to join the Clergy.
Parnell had her only son Philip. She only rolled for one child and I’m glad he lived, I’m also grateful for no surprise multiples.
Melrose became a child.
Philippa had her final children Satoshi and Ai. Her daughter did not live past infancy though.
Then Frideswide was born and I missed her birth because I was at other households for the plague.
Alice became a teenager.

1500-1599 Recap Part 77:
Janet Silversweater became a child and might be the best blend of her parents genetics of her siblings.
Philippa had her son Kei as Parnell, Thomasin and Elric arrived in Windenburg.
Parnell expanded her business and fell in love with Daryl Akiyama I SAID IT BEFORE THESE AKIYAMAS ARE EVERYWHERE. I wouldn’t be so annoyed about it if they weren’t constantly coming out of the woodwork there’s no end to them and I didn’t keep track of who each of them are related to lol. My real issue is with my perfectionism really.
Anyways, Elric died which I know is right before the Plague.
Sarah’s twins became toddlers.

1500-1599 Recap Part 74:
Adrian started getting more noticeable wrinkles.
Parnell Jernigan became a toddler.
Audrey became a teenager and I feel both of Adam’s daughters look quite a bit like their mother.
Arthur became a toddler as did Elric and Melrose while Amy became a child.
Unfortunately Anne had passed away from the famine but before Margery passed of famine herself, she and her husband had a son named Cuthbert.
Cecily gave birth to her daughter Matilda.

1500-1599 Recap Part 73:
Janet Silversweater became a toddler.
Philippa gave birth and her birth roll was literally one away from death so I had to make it dramatic, obviously lol.
Thomas and Alice Kibo became children in time to become older siblings to Arthur.
Thomasin went into labor around the same time as Patricia.
Patricia had her son Melrose.
Thomasin and Philippa unfortunately lost one of their twins in the birth. At this point I realized that every one of Adrian’s daughters had lost their first born child up until this point.
Joyce became a child.

Year 1590 Part 3:
Following Elric’s passing there were plenty of birthdays to be had. Wilmot celebrated thirty-five years while Piers celebrated thirteen in Glimmerbrook. Then Bartholomew turned thirteen himself looking quite a bit like his father. Toward the end of the year, Philippa’s daughter, Parnell, turned six to her family’s relief.
Parnell went into labor in the late hours of new year’s eve though which served as a fair way to spend the end of the year in her eyes anyways.

Year 1589 Part 2:
Florence then had her thirteenth birthday followed by Janet’s sixth right before news came in that Sarah had delivered twin girls, Katherine and Elizabeth. Then Ambrose celebrated his fifty-third birthday.
Thomasin, Parnell and Elric decided to stop in Windenburg just in time to get news that Philippa had another son named Kei.
The snow was too thick to travel further for the time being so the sisters decided that they might as well get settled into Windenburg for as long as needed. Parnell was happy to make connections throughout town and unlike in Mt.Komorebi the people in Windenburg were more receptive to her business to her delight.
But she was also drawn in by a resident with an odd name, Daryl, he mentioned that he had grown up in Mt.Komorebi but decided to travel until he settled in Windenburg with his son when his now teenage son was a toddler. This only proved to make him a more attractive partner to Parnell since he already had a son he wouldn’t press her for additional children when she only wanted one. She was growing a bit anxious about marriage since she was getting older and having no children already wasn’t making her a very good potential bride anyways.

Year 1586 Part 2:
TW/CW: Death, Child Death
Arthur Kibo turned one shortly after the loss of his brother though he had little knowledge of that loss.
Things began to look up as Elric turned one as well and remained a healthy boy who took great joy in running around with his cousin.
William and Patricia’s oldest child, Amy, celebrated her sixth birthday before news of Margery’s mother-in-law’s passing was shared throughout Glimmerbrook. Though the loss was made less sad when Audrey and Melrose celebrated their birthdays with their family and when news that Anthony had welcomed a daughter into the family came out.
Which only lasted so long because Maria’s son Bernard died shortly after followed by Janet’s father-in-law, Margery’s daughter Anne and Janet’s eldest son Thomas in order and rapid succession over the course of a few short days.

Year 1586 Part 1:
TW/CW: Child Death
Little Parnell was loved dearly by her mother and Aunts though Thomasin did fuss over her more than Philippa did. The worry that the child would take ill and disappear from them filled her mind after losing her own child and the fear was not eased when news came that Janet had lost her son Matthew to the lack of food from the famine.
Still with the children growing up, Parnell spent more time venting to her sisters about how the people in the area were not interested in business especially not from a woman. It was frustrating to her that her hard work was being set aside but she also started to wonder if she really wanted to spend her life in the mountains establishing trade at this post where she wasn’t adjusting well to the culture.
Philippa was happy in Mt. Komorebi but she was happy to listen to her sister vent. That said, Thomasin was also growing weary of the constant snow after spending nearly two years in it but she appreciated learning the art techniques unique to the area and her son was far too young to travel so for her it was fine. The sisters didn’t say the words aloud but the famine back where they came from was also more than enough reason to stay put for the time being.

Year 1585 Part 2:
TW/CW: Death
Ever since the start of the year, crops had been failing throughout the southern regions leading to what could only be called a famine through the land. Though not every household was hit as hard.
The Carlisle’s in Henford barely noticed given their large stores of food and they tried to share what they could but with no telling when things would settle again... it was hard to dole out food as they liked. Joyce had her sixth birthday and discovered that she could take on a human form to the relief of Gilbert, though at home she preferred to not disguise her true self.
It was cause for celebration when news spread that Rebecca’s son, Anthony and Wilmot’s sister, Clemence had gotten married. Although the festivities were dampened by the loss of Rebecca since she had grown weak from the lack of food over the several months of rationing as had Samara’s brother Walter.
In Tartosa, Adrian began to show his age while Cecily made sure to keep the people in her care fed the best she could. Bartholomew was happy to tell his aunt all about how they had surprised their father with a visit from his sisters for his thirty-fifth birthday.
Thomasin and Philippa were happy to care for their surviving children and it was a breath of relief when little Parnell had her first birthday without incident.

Year 1584 Part 3:
TW/CW: Infant Death
Philippa’s labor lasted for a while which was partly to be expected for a first time birth but eventually it got concerning as Thomasin realized that something was seriously wrong as Philippa lost strength after being in more pain than was normal.
Parnell ran down to find someone who may be able to help and soon the cause was determined. The child was not in the right position which was stalling everything.
Unfortunately, Philippa’s firstborn daughter, she called Samara, died at some point in the laboring process but her twin came out weak but alive.
Philippa decided to name her surviving daughter Parnell Jernigan after her sister and the family name of her daughter’s father. Parnell was deeply honored but was more grateful to have not lost her sister after everything was said and done.

Year 1605 Part 1:
The house grew more lively in anticipation of the triplet’s birthday.
Susanna got scared of the wolf hunts even though she wasn’t one she couldn’t help but fear that her alien features would put her in the spotlight in some way eventually and so she chose to leave town for a while. She also thought it was about time she actually consider getting married and starting her own family.
Rachel gave birth to her fourth child, Olivia, on May 19th after George and Marieta had their first birthdays.
Just a few weeks later, Parnell delivered her son Daichi on July 6th.

Surviving Family:
Talia’s eldest child, Thomas Carlisle married Isabel Goth and the couple had six children before Isabel’s death. Anthony, Andrew, Agnes, Adam, Allen, and Arthur. Unfortunately both Adam and Allen passed away as children. After Isabel’s death, Thomas remarried Margery Thorne and the couple had two sons, Adrian and Ambrose.
Adrian(pictured first) had six children together with Samara Ernest; Margaret, Roger, Thomasin, Parnell, Philippa, and Catherine. Unfortunately both Roger and Catherine did not survive to adulthood. Adrian also had a son with Layla Jang named Solomon who died in the first plague event. His daughter with Clemence Silversweater, Wilmot died in the second plague event. He also had a daughter, Audrey, with Julian Laurent die as an infant though her twin, Maria grew up to have children of her own. He had an additional daughter with Tomi Markovic named Cecily who has children of her own. Adrian’s eldest daughter, Elizabeth, died as a young woman and her mother was also Samara’s mother, Rachel Ernest.
Thomasin Carlisle had eight children before she died. Her daughter, Christina, died shortly after her first birthday and both of her twins, Bela and Elric died before reaching childhood. Then she had Frideswide was born who is pictured next to her other surving daughter, Grace. After having Grace, Thomasin married Agustin Tellez (pictured beneath Thomasin’s daughters) who took her name and they had triplet boys, Francisco, Ramon, and Vincente who are not pictured due to being infants. Then Thomasin died of birth complications.
Philippa is pictured underneath Agustin and she had seven children. Her firstborn, Samara, died from the birth but Samara’s twin, Parnell Jernigan, is pictured next to her brother, Terric Suzuki, who also had his twin, Osbert, die as an infant. Then Philippa married to Yoshio who I forgot to take a picture of. Philippa had three children with her husband, their daughter Ai died as an infant but their sons Kei and Satoshi are pictured last beneath their siblings.

Year 1597 Part 1:
TW/CW: Death
Philip celebrated his sixth birthday and grew up still looking a lot like his mother while his cousin turned six as well a few months later and he took more after his father like most of Philippa’s children did to be fair. Like their Cecily, Maria, Parnell and Philippa failed to make any fuss over turning thirty-five either.
News spread that Piers Voss had married sometime in February because they were already expecting. While March brought with it news that Adrian Jaleel’s step-daughter had died.
Thomasin did her best to try and enjoy the last moments of having two toddlers around before Frideswide celebrated her sixth birthday but she was also delighted to finally have a child live to see their sixth birthday and everything going forward was exciting and new. At least the girls maintained their good relationship as they got older.
Agustin was wonderful with the girls and he always had a story for them. He was open to sharing the languages he knew and the culture he had with them.
Unfortunately shortly before Philippa’s daughter turned thirteen, Parnell’s husband died after being bit by an animal.
