NAVIGATION POST

Welcome to KappaTengu! A pokeask blog about two traveling mercenaries consisting of a Nuzleaf and Lombre, named Koban and Lianhua. While there is a vague story going on, I am not immune to memes and silly antics (like 90% of the blog was memes/meme asks before my hiatus). I made this blog in 2018, and pulling it out of hiatus as of now, December 2023. This blog is best viewed on desktop.

This blog will be using a format where plot will be advanced after we reach an ask goal, eg: let’s say I set a goal of 10 asks until X happens, after answering that many asks, I’ll close the askbox, proceed with what was promised, then open the askbox again. There will be times where there’s no goal– called ‘free days’, where nothing is set to happen anytime soon– and there will be times where I will only count asks that pertain to the plot/lore, and any unrelated asks won’t count towards the number. I’ll typically call these “plot asks”.

So if you see the sidebar say anything like “ASKS UNTIL EVOLUTION: 20” or “PLOT ASKS UNTIL KOBAN EXPLODES: 5” those are just the ask goals for plot progression! If you see nothing like that anywhere, then we’re probably in a ‘free days’ phase, and our silly yokais are just chillin’.

So feel free to send serious or memey asks alike! And while this isn't an RP blog by any means, interactions from other Pokemon blogs are encouraged! You may even have impact on the plot, and the characters will certainly remember you!

On rare occasions, I may reply with art should anyone answer an ask I sent to them. I don't mind if anyone does the same if I answer their ask. Just keep in mind they probably won't be extensive/drag out.

Link accessibility for mobile users is still WIP. On desktop, you can use the blog theme links for navigation (the circle buttons to the left).No rules page yet since I haven't had any bad apples come in, but one will be made if trouble happens. I do ask you don't reblog any of my OOC posts (anything tagged "outofyokai"!), and not to send too many joke asks during plot advances. I trust everyone to read the room/atmosphere.

#Intermission 1: Budew and Toxicroak #Egg Arc #Lianhua’s Past #Koban’s Past

A brief "about the blog" description and a summary of what happened on the blog so far in terms of vague plot under the cut.

This blog revolves around a strange Nuzleaf and Lombre, named Koban and Lianhua respectively. They work as self-proclaimed self-employed mercenaries dubbed Team KappaTengu, taking on any work they can, and doing anything they’re hired for, whether it be good or bad.

Koban has amnesia about his past, and Lianhua seems to be cagey about his own past.

Although always travelling, they primarily seem to hang around forests.

WHAT’S HAPPENED SO FAR:

Koban has stolen an egg from Takuya, lying to Lianhua that it was for a quest he accepted. But in reality– and Lianhua has already caught on, too– Koban stole it because it rung something familiar in his head, and hoped that keeping it and perhaps hatching it would help Koban gain any memory at all.

The egg has hatched into a strange Budew.

INTERMISSION 1:

Budew was left on her own, seemingly waiting for Lianhua and Koban to come back. She's attacked by an unknown Fire Pokemon while waiting, to which she was saved by a passing Toxicroak named Takuya. Takuya follows others' advice, and goes to search for either the attacker or Budew's parents.

Basic Information

FACE/BODY CLAIM: Gwilym Lee

AGE: OLD - but looks like late 20s/early 30s

EYES: Deep Blue

HAIR: Soft Brown; usually short and well-kept; Usually have a closely-shaved beard/mustache, as well

HEIGHT: 6'2

PRIMARY OUTFIT: Carr's modern look tends to border on 'hipster.' He wears plaid and sweaters and skinny jeans - usually in neutral/homey colors. He also usually has glasses - his vision's never quite recovered from the attack all those centuries ago.

Personality

You know that meme about all the different cinnamon rolls? He is definitely 'looks like a cinnamon roll, but could actually kill you.' Not that he would unless you intentionally threatened his clutch. Beyond that, he's open and friendly to just about everyone - even if that friendliness isn't returned. He tries very hard to always believe the best of people, but only to a degree. After all, he has a promise to keep and a clutch to protect. Those things ALWAYS come first for Carr.

Romance

Being the kind of person he is, caring for others comes easily to Carradoc. Romance on its own is easy for him, and he's likely to welcome anyone who displays that kind of interest (if he feels the same.) However, actual intimacy is on an entirely different level. To allow that, it would likely have to be someone he cares about just as much as he cares about his clutch. And that could only happen with trust and time.

Where to Find Him

The most obvious place is his flower shop. However, it's possible he could be found out the the forest gathering various supplies he can't grow himself, etc. Or maybe in a nearby park? Coffee shops are also possible. Dragons like coffee... or this dragon does. ;) Or perhaps any occasion where someone might've ordered flower arrangements - a party/wedding/funeral/etc.

Just because a verse isn't listed here doesn't mean I'm not interested in writing it. I adore all kinds of AUs, and welcome the chance to get creative with my muses. If you've seen a verse that another of my muses has, and you'd like to see this muse in something similar, let me know. You can also check out my 'Plot Ideas' tag, too. ^_^

Main Verse:

In Carradoc’s clan, every dragon had their specific duties. His duty was special -revered- and he didn’t have to earn it or even fight for it. His job was the result of his unique genetic condition - he was born with fully developed and fully functional male and female sex organs. As far as the clan was concerned, it made him (and several other dragons with similar genetics) perfect candidates for guarding over the eggs while they hatched, and raising the younglings after being born.

Carradoc always took his job with the utmost seriousness. He loved looking after the eggs, and helping the younglings to learn about their way of life. But then his clan - the last in Wales - was attacked by humans…humans with magic. When their Queen finally realized they were going to lose, she ordered Carradoc and the other clutch caretakers to rescue as many eggs as they could and flee. He was the only one that survived…and only just barely. He sports a long, jagged scar on his back which starts on his left shoulder and stretches diagonally all the way down to just below his right hip. One of his wings was permanently damaged, and flying causes him immense pain.

Now, in the modern age, Carradoc watches and waits. When will the eggs hatch? He doesn’t know. In the chaos of escape, he paid no attention to such things; he only grabbed what he could carry and fled. He fears that even once the younglings are born, he won’t be able to raise them properly in this technological world. But he knows he has to try. Until then, the dragon runs a quaint floral and herbs shop to pass the time. He tries to keep a low profile - and live a ‘normal’ human life. Typically he is soft spoken and well-mannered, but make no mistake if you so much as hint ay a threat to his eggs, you’ll see a side of him that will leave you quivering in fear. He will do whatever it takes to protect the clutch.

Historical Verses

Carradoc has been around for quite awhile. If you'd like to RP with him in something other than a modern timeline just ask. I'll be happy to plan something out with you.

While Carradoc isn't a fandom OC, I'm happy to put him in a specific fandom if that's where your muse comes from. Just talk to me about it, and we can try to figure out how to make it work.

Stuff That's Good to Know Before Starting a Thread

Carradoc has a massive scar on his back that spans from one shoulder diagonally down to just below his hip on the opposite side. It's a magical wound and the scar always looks (and feels) like it's freshly healed. In his human form he usually hides it and accepts the pain and twinges. In his dragon form, he's lost the ability to fly. He still has his wings, but the act of trying to lift himself up off the ground is excruciating. It's possible the pain he's in will be shown, or thought about, or mentioned in passing in almost any RP. How much you have your muse know/react to that magical injury is entirely up to you. :)

Normally, Carradoc is taking care of 5 unhatched dragon eggs. Our RP doesn't have to revolve around the eggs hatching... but it can if that's a plot that interests you.

If we're writing in a verse where Carradoc is human, he will ALWAYS be a single father of six. Yes. SIX. (One of the eggs has twins inside, which is SUPER rare for dragons.)

I'm not really keen on any plots where any of the eggs get destroyed. That would literally RUIN Carr, and I'm not willing to do that amount of damage to his psyche.

Worldbuilding starts with you! (Ask prompt, OPEN)

C7: Do gods exist? Tell us about a god or goddess that resides in the world.

Salmonid gods and deities are something I’ve been wanting to make a full post on for a while, now! Not every Salmonid is fully superstitious, nor do they all believe in the same gods, or that gods exist at all, however there are multiple deities that the Salmonids have within their mythos and lore.

We don’t know much of anything of religions in Splatoon, however given the core lore the games provide, these deities likely do not exist.

I DO have sketches of all three of these, as I’ve been sitting on this idea for a while, however I don’t have a good way to include those here. It’s long enough as is! But maybe someday I’ll finish them up and give them a proper post (But if you wanna see the sketches, all ya gotta do is ask!). In the meantime, have this:

Mother Maridae: A large Maws-like deity who is considered the mother of all life. Her constantly shedding scales birth new Salmonids, with each scale representing a new person. She has a promenade of Smallfry who swim about her like a luminous halo. Before Smallfry hatch, Maridae gives them the care and love they need. She is benevolent and kind, and treats everyone under her care with love and respect, making her quite the idealized mother. When Salmonids perish, they return to her care. There you can either offer your scales to her and move on to the afterlife, or you can become one of her scales to be reborn into a new life. She was the inspiration behind the Maws class. While Maws can be biologically male, most that choose to be a Maws are female, wanting to follow after Mother Maridae’s path. As a deity, she represents fertility. It’s common for parents planning to fertilize eggs to pray to her, or make offerings for a bountiful and healthy nest.

Twins Keiko and Koichi: This deity is based directly after twin Salmonids that once existed, centuries ago. Considered the first Goldie to ever be hatched, the twins were born conjoined from the neck down, with their tail splitting into two. Upon the birth of the sisters, Salmonids thought that they were sent directly from the heavens, and were to act like deities upon the earth. Unfortunately, due to their condition they lived a very short life, barely making it to their teens before they passed away. Myths say that the twins shed their mortal form and returned to the heavens, having fulfilled their duty. Common myths claim that when the sisters are in good company, fortune will shower upon the Salmonids, and they will prosper and be wealthy. Their agreements result in the birth of Goldies, who are, in their own right, considered deities upon the earth. When the sisters are arguing however, the Salmonids believe that misfortune will fall upon them. During this time, no Goldies will hatch, and they believe that the sisters finally stop arguing once a Goldie is hatched. In my more personal headcanons, the Salmonids have not seen a Goldie hatch for some time, and they consider the war between themselves and the Inklings a result of the twins arguing, and their current misfortune. As deities, the twins represent fortune and prosperity. While some Salmonids will ask them for good fortune, it’s considered bad luck to ask them for a Goldie child.

Gardener Anno: A Salmonid deity who wears a cornucopia of foods, and rides on the tail of a giant eel named Dalfon. Anno is the god of the harvest, and his eel companion is the god of rain. This deity in particular is based off of a constellation, and farmers would refer to the position of his stars to decide the perfect time to plant their crops. Common belief is that Anno tends to the soil and breathes life into the crops. Then Dalfon comes, bearing storm clouds on its belly, to bring forth the much-needed rain. Some depictions show the rain coming straight out of Dalfon’s sides. When the pair leaves, the harvest is over, and he sleeps until winter comes. Every harvest, the Salmonids offer a portion of their crops to Anno and his eel, as thanks for his assistance, and the food. They believe that if the food is dissatisfactory, such as if one were to offer the worst of their harvest, Anno would be enraged and strike a famine upon their soil for the next year. Various Salmonids have their theories as to what his favorite food is, however this usually reflects their most supple or preferred crop. The most popular is corn. The Steel Eel class is heavily inspired by Anno and Dalfon. The original purpose of the Steel Eel was to be used to water crops quickly and effectively during a drought, however they were easily repurposed for war. As a deity, he represents prosperity, however he and his eel are both considered fickle gods, and some may consider him a representation of famine during a bad year.

That’s all I have in regards to deities at the moment. I may come up with more should the inspiration strike me, but I’m quite happy with the lineup I have now.

C9: Is medicine further advanced than our own or is it less so? If magic exists, does it play a part with healing the sick or injured?

I don’t think magic really “exists” in Splatoon! You’re probably not really looking for that but I may as well say it!

As for Salmonid medicine, it’s getting better. I’d say they’re a few decades behind Inklings (i.e. Inklings are in 2020, while Salmonids are in 1960/70), so they don’t have as much access to the medicine and treatments that those in Inkopolis would. They’re quickly catching up, but the overfishing and oppression is really not doing them any favors at present.

Not much else to say! They’re very intelligent, but can only work with what’s available to them.

@scavenger98 I didn’t do runner ups this time but this entitled boy had serious potential, though I don’t understand the when cast part of the card. Anyway, great overall flavor, 0 actual impact like its cost, which is a good thing for this challenge. It can have serious uses in monarch matters environments, in decks that skip their draw phase for one reason or another (mad pair with Solitary Confinement ) and there can be interesting kitchen table politics since you get to decide who’s the next monarch!

@machine-elf-paladin Pretty smart flavor text and a deceptively innocent 0 drop which could warp the game around it, especially in limited formats, where it would feast on every blocker or removal target until it becomes a threat in its own right. Considering this, maybe haste is a bit too much.

@walker-of-the-yellow-path making a statement for the peculiar times we live in right now with their design! The cards reads fun, but I’m concerned about the impact it will have on the game it’s played. The back and forth of the Plaguebearer might feel too much in the long run. I would like it more if it had limited uses like in the peculiar case of Leech Bonder.

@i-am-the-one-who-wololoes one can’t go wrong with egg designs! Unlike other egg cards, this one has to “hatch” and not just break/die to get your birb, which is a neat flavor win!

@kavinika Not gonna lie, this lil robo put a smile on my face. It has the essential amount of usefulness for a 0 drop and later on, be it equipment or counters, you can make combat difficult for the opponents. I can’t wait to see more of Soscarus’ creations!

@askkrenko One major concern when designing 0 drops is what if the player gets to have two of them in the first hand? Will it be too much? The all-wise goblin lord of Ravnica tackled this problem with the introduction of the “basic creature” concept and I dig it. Yes, this goblin is stronger than the standard 0 drop, memnite, but at least you can play only one on your first turn. People with experience with affinity decks will know this matters quite a lot.

@aethernalstars Before the commentary, I’m pretty sure this hydra can enter the battlefield without counters but I don’t remember the method. Everyone please comment below to remind me of the card, it really bothers me that I can’t remember it XD Now on to the commentary, I like you used the trend in the flavor texts where Vivien describes animals from different planes! On the battlefield, a 0/1 will do what 0/1s do, but the “printed power” is the selling point of the card, be it revealing on exiling with Varolz.

@dimestoretajic This this the first of the three o drop gods we received! The art chosen for this is great, mighty yet hilarious XD The fury of Om rains down on infidels that mess with your creatures, and that damage can really make a difference. The threat of damage also “protects” your creatures so its a tad easier to actually flip Om’s switch!

@morbidlyqueerious The second god design comes in the form of a land creature. Technically lands aren’t qualified for this challenge since they don’t have costs at all but the problem of the design is that it’s very easy for Anagatha to start counting as a creature, and a 5/5 creature that is. If this was a regular god design for like 2 to 4 mana, it would be great, it has both a good straightforward condition and payoff.

@naban-dean-of-irritation Atropos has a very subtle impact on the game at any time, and its power level is lower than other graveyard hate cards, so I think it being a God creature evens things out. The creature awakening condition feels fair too. I believe it could see play in decks with some artifacts and/or morph shenanigans!

@emmypupcake If you frequent to mythic spoiler, you might have come across the ongoing meme of “Looks like dredge got a new toy”. I feel this can be said the wisps but for Arcades decks or defender heavy theme in general. However it being defender isn’t that much of a drawback for it to have more toughness than ornithopter, and I feel it would be really frustrating if your opponents could wall you with a 3 toughness flyer with 0 effort.

@evscfa1 Zuthfangg is a really interesting design in regards of using a drawback to justify the 0 cost of the card. And in our case the drawback/ the spice of the card is that the opponents have a say on what it can or can’t do. With that in mind, I think being a 1/1 would be okay. Yes, it would surpass memnite for sure, but it’s a legendary creatures so it makes sense!

@nine-effing-hells First of all, I got to praise your effort for writing two flavor texts, and the second in the broken message form! On to the actual card, I think it would look better if the specimen had counters and it loses them in order to transform. That would save some text and complexity. As for the power level, I think by the time you get this to transform, your opponent will be able to handle a 4/4 menace creature.

@whackycrack It’s so cute!!! And while innocent it plays pretty well especially with combined blocks and/or more tiny screamers!

@hypexion I really dig the design idea and the overall flavor but being either a 0/1 or a 4/4 flyer for 0 mana feels overwhelming. The optimal stats are debatable but my call would be either 2/1 or 3/1. I feels its ok to hit harder if you are the monarch, but the high toughness gives it more longevity than other more expensive creatures. What do you guys think?

@starch255 This design is meant for edh, where life totals and creatures are usually larger but gifting a 5/5 0 drop to an opponent so they kill all the other plays is surely undercosted, plus EDH has a lot of tutors so the threat is very real, even in a 99 card deck. A smaller body with some slight evasion would feel less oppressive?

@thedirtside Leyline of Anticipation’s best friend!! Buy yours while supplies last XD It also works well with blink effects. So this little kitty is either an innocent creature or an demon straight out of the Hellvault. Are cats allowed to have such power?

@snugz Fleeting Flame is strictly more fair than the spirit guides cards, and that says a lot. The elemental tag might also come in handy! What’s not to like?

@Danny Death triggers fit 0 cost designs because even if they do have an impact, it happens later in the game, so in this regard, Exploited Muse gets a passing grade! There’s like a lot of room in the card, so I kinda expected some sort of flavor text to explain the muse’s hardships etc

@whuh-oh a 0 mana sliver? You sir, like to play with fire! The average sliver deck appreciates all the ramp it can get but at some point the enters tapped clause will be a hindrance. Ι doubt this passes the 0 cost test, but I’m curious to see how different a Sliver deck would be with a playset of this in it.

@shootingstarhunter Another good strategy for designs with stats higher than the average of the mana cost is the group hug way! The design is also a nice throwback to the recent Generous Gift.

@misterstingyjack and @antediluvian-microchip With the innovation of Lithoform Engine, we can now have copies of creature spells, and two people jumped on the hype train to explore this design space. Ludevic’s Reject provides semi-useful bodies with a steep life cost, and Motes of dust, being true to their name, do.. a lot of etb and death triggers. However, there’s a reason MaRo named the storm scale after this wild mechanic, so for once, maybe we should trust Ludevic XD

@shakesZX Typical humans, they cry about being oppressed while they can enter the battlefield as a 3/3 for 0 mana and minimum effort. May Avacyn purge them! Also, it can somehow count the opponent creatures that enter the battlefield on your turn with flash or deathtriggers.

@wolkemesser Not gonna lie, didn’t expect to see a germ in a not-token card! The ability is really sweet, it obviously synergizes with living weapon and one scry every couple turns feels ok for a 0 cost card! Glory to Phyrexia!

@deafeningsandwichpeach I like that this card uses a condition to justify its power and cost but getting to ten Scute Swarms is a small miracle in itself, even with the built-in replication ability.

@milkandraspberry Symmetric effects are fair game in any mana cost, but the scale of this goblin is extreme. 5 damage swings can close the game very abruptly and sudden ends usually don’t provide fun or closure.

@teaxch The suicide recipe is never off the menu no matter the mana cost! I think this works well as a 2/1 0 drop. But I can’t help but wonder what evil acts a leech must do to return as a spirit horror XD

@ignorantturtlegaming Closing with a very interesting design that cares about multicolored cards. It would be bold to say this is a “build around me card” but I can see it being prime target for auras and other buffs while being supported by multicolored instants for protection. Also pearlescent dragon is all colors, which elevate it to high draft pick in environments like shadowmoor/eventide with their color matters theme.

10. Do they have any markings, piercings or scars?

LIRA –– has a handful of scars (three in her abdomen where she got shot at Ostagar) and post-game she gets an enormous back tattoo of the warden griffin rampant with the cousland laurels around the outside (she’s visiting zev in antiva and is like “ah it’s a whim” but it’s not a whim she feels very strongly about it). her ears are probably pierced but she doesn’t often wear earrings

VESPER –– has a number of scars, most of them minor. the most noticeable are a collection of small burn scars over her right shoulder/shoulder blade from the riot at Ostwick where she got hit with debris while protecting a student. she also has a tiny tattoo of an owl on her thigh from when she passed her Harrowing, and eventually the scarring of the Anchor. also probably has her ears pierced and doesn’t wear earrings that often

ENIKO –– many scars, including some particularly notable (though not obvious) marks of past canings. I really waffle back and forth on the tattoos––modern au eniko would but idk about canon. multiple ear piercings and an eyebrow piercing

BRAN –– has multiple scars (minor, mostly, I don’t think I ever pinned any of them down) and a handful of tattoos (a compass, a wave, bird in flight, a sun, other stuff). ears are pierced in multiple places and honestly probably a nose piercing too (:

18. Have any special keepsakes?

LIRA –– something of her parents. and the Cousland sword/shield of course. maybe a few other various things from her travels? idk

VESPER –– yes, she keeps them in a small pouch on he person. I don’t remember what exactly is in it but there’s something from Kit, a few old drawings, a trinket from the elf who worked in the kitchens when she was a girl, and Cullen’s lucky coin. maybe a few other minor things from friends that she’s picked up over the years

ENIKO –– nah fuck that (he’s got an inert griffin egg. one day it will hatch and he’ll be a proud father.)

BRAN –– she’s got a habit of collecting knickknacks but they’re all in her cabin on the Luckrunner so she doesn’t have them on her person. she got a music box for her birthday from ex animo that she treasures quite a bit

33. How have they changed over time?

LIRA –– has unwound a little. stopped trying to punish herself quite so much. finds peace

VESPER –– has become more settled in her own skin and more self-assured. she’s more willing to ask her friends for help with things and doesn’t play the martyr in every scenario. which is to say she still plays the martyr, just. not quite as often.

ENIKO –– definitely has (and would have continued to) loosened up and taken more of a moral stand, but that’s not saying a whole lot

BRAN –– it’s funny; she ran away from home to avoid a responsibility she wasn’t ready for and ended up picking a very similar responsibility on her own terms. she’s still learning to stay when she wants to cut and run, but she’s always been loyal and true, and is getting better at listening to that side of her instead of the thing that is always off to the next adventure when this one gets too serious for her tastes (I think, if there were ever a world where she ended up at the head of the ar calagri family and merchant business, she’d be very good at it)

37. Do they have any phobias?

LIRA –– not really. being alone, maybe, but she deals with that one by trying to make herself alone so she never has to lose anyone again and I don’t think it’s a proper phobia (it’s a bad coping mechanism for sure tho)

VESPER –– is terrified of Tranquility. generally afraid of her own power, but that’ more of a constant anxiety than a proper phobia

ENIKO –– is afraid of many things (the dark, the dogs, sir) but none of those is debilitating because he’s been taught Very well to do the job no matter how afraid he is (:

BRAN –– fears a cage, but not in a way concrete enough for it to be a true phobia

51. What were some inspirations for your character (people, movies, games)?

LIRA –– I.... honesty don’t know I don’t remember. she just sort of showed up Like That. rip.

Keshet Rewatches All of Scooby-Doo, Pt. 21: “Jeepers, It’s The Creeper"

("Scooby-Doo, Where Are You", Season 2 Episode 4. Original Airdate: 10/3/1970)

AKA, "Scooby Gets Chicks, No I Mean Literally He Gets Baby Chickens The Screencap Below Is Misleading"

The villain of this episode is pretty memorable, but it’s not because of a distinctive shrieking laugh or an impressive design, nor even a particularly clever scheme. No, everyone remembers the Creeper because the show never stops telling you his name.

The episode begins with a nighttime view of a lonely road, the only one that I have ever known. A car comes to a stop as its driver and the audience catch sight of a tree that has fallen across the road, and as the driver gets out to try to move it, some creeper watches him from the bushes.

Sorry, the Creeper watches from the bushes. The definite article is important, you know.

Silently except for the musical sting, the Creeper moves from the bushes, menacingly approaching... and the view cuts to the gang driving along on their way to a school dance, reminding us all that they are teenagers and it’s really zoinksed-up that Dean Winchester kept trying to put the moves on Daphne, he’s nearly forty, what the fuck.

Sorry, school dance and hayride. Man, i know Scooby-Doo was meant to be wholesome entertainment to stave off the moral panic machine of activist groups concerned that Jonny Quest was too violent, but is this just them trying to be wholesome and pure, or were things really so boring in the early Seventies that a hayride was exciting for teens?

Shaggy’s priorities are more understandable. He’s jazzed about the buffet table, with chocolate-covered corn on the cob. Boy, that sounds like a mess.

Even Scooby gets into it, putting on a bow tie he must have stolen from Fred Flintstone (though it does complement his spots nicely), combing his fur, and splashing on some violently pink “cologne”. Exactly why Scooby is dressing up is kind of confusing. Does he expect there to be other dogs present? Is he just fancying up for his own sake, to feel good about himself at a public event?

Whatever the case, the gang’s plans are brought to a literal halt as they hit the brakes, stopped by the sight of the car and tree from the scene before.

The gang identify the victim as a bank guard for no apparent reason, and find that the car has only been wrecked inside, in what Velma figures out is evidence of a search. The guard comes to only long enough to pass Fred a blank sheet of paper, and mumble, “the flame will tell... the Creeper....”

“The Creeper?” Daphne asks.

“Re Reeper?” Scooby repeats.

“Like wow, this is creepy! Who’s the Creeper?” Shaggy wonders, and if you haven’t figured out the name of the episode’s monster, boy, you’re going to have plenty of chances to come.

Scooby finds another paper, this one with the address of the bank president, who fortuitously lives nearby. The gang take the unconscious guard to his boss to see if he can help out.

Mr. Carswell, the bank president, demonstrates a discouraging lack of familiarity with medical emergencies and insists that the guard will be okay with a bit of rest. Fred relates the bad news that the sheriff is out of town for several hours, proving that this is an utter fantasy since a phone call from a rich white man’s home does not summon an immediate police presence to his defense.

Carswell explains to the gang that the Creeper has been robbing the bank in the dead of night, impossibly leaving the building behind with the doors and windows still locked from the inside. “He’s a phantom,” Carswell says, “a phantom that can walk right through walls.”

Uncharacteristically, Fred brushes this mystery off.

I guess we know that badly dancing to generic music is a higher priority for Fred than mysteries. The scene transitions to a lot of repeated animation of the gang and some extras twitching like they need to use the bathroom, with the liveliest dancing happening when Scooby cuts in on Velma and Shaggy to lead Shaggy to the buffet table.

Well, that explains one mystery: the chocolate covered corn on the cob was just Shaggy’s plan to abuse the buffet layout and combine things that were not meant to be combined.

As the boys chow down, the Creeper shows up outside the barn, lets out a groaning growl, and flips the power switch to the building. As dozens of extras who were not seen previously start to panic, Fred reassures everyone and suggests they all continue the party at the malt shop. It’s a moment that suggests Fred may have some charm outside of the gang, a notion that is never repeated in later series when it comes to putting Mystery Inc among ohter teens.

Scooby and Shaggy “clean up” by eating all of the remaining (probably untouched by anyone else) food, and taking what’s left out behind the barn to dump it by an “ugly scarecrow”... which turns out to be the Creeper, waiting the dark.

The Creeper gives chase, moaning, “PAPER!” over and over, a bit that may give one flashbacks to a coin-craving mummy. As the gang hide in a hay pile, the episode’s song starts up: Daydreamin’, a song built on the outdated and disproven notion that ostriches their heads in holes in the ground. Amidst this, the gang play keep-away with the blank sheet of paper the gang took off the guard, leading to at least one golden reaction from the Creeper.

That’s a face that says, “i watched you fold that into a paper airplane but i never thought you were going to actually throw it”.

The gang get split up by the chase, and Shaggy and Scooby wind up hiding in a chicken coop. Somehow, this disguise fools the Creeper:

In fact, it works so well that Scooby hatches an egg, causing a chick to imprint on him and follow Scooby and Shaggy around for the rest of the episode, acting as a kind of proto-Scrappy—especially once Scooby’s attempt to correct the misunderstanding winds up teaching the chick to bark.

Meanwhile, having survived a horse-drawn cart crashing off a cliff and upending on top of them, Fred, Velma, and Daphne discover a car hidden among the bushes. Inside is no clue to is owner, but there are scraps of photographic negatives left torn up all over the driver’s side floor.

Listen, just because she’s the smart one, it doesn’t mean speaking is her strong suit.

When Shaggy and Scooby try hiding among some shrubs as the Creeper stalks them, their little chick bursts out to start barking at the green ghoul. Scooby demonstrates a stellar grasp of the threats in the situation, and bursts out to rock the little bird to sleep, cradling it in his arms and humming Rock-a-bye Baby.

Which, naturally, does zoinks-all to deal with the Creeper, so Scooby kicks him in the shin and bolts.

In a sequence that adds nothing to the plot and makes no sense in context except to add some question of who the Creeper is, the gang follow a set of very large footprints out into the middle of nowhere, arriving at a gorge with a rope-and-plank bridge set across it. The planks are drawn back, curled up in a sort of drawbridge situation that probably wouldn’t work in real life.

The gang conclude that the Creeper must’ve gone across, and bribe Scooby into risking his life to cross by climbing over on the ropes, tossing him a Scooby Snack... which the chick catches and eats from its perch on Scooby’s nose. “A deal’s a deal,” Velma says, ignoring that the humans have not actually held up to their side of the deal in any reasonable fashion.

Miraculously, Scooby makes it across, and unrolls the bridge so the others can simply walk, leading Shaggy to reference a meme that was outdated a decade before this episode aired, by asking “is this trip necessary?”

The gang make it inside, and discover the resident of the cave: the Hermit of the Hills, with voice acting credited to Frank Welker at what must be his highest pitch.

There’s so much extraneous nonsense going on in this episode, it really feels like they sat down, wrote a plot, and then realized they only had ten minutes worth of story.

The Hermit welcomes the gang and invites them to dinner, and while the others have some doubts, Velma is certain he’s really the Creeper in a “hermit disguise”. While Velma accuses an innocent man, the Hermit offers Shaggy and Scooby a taste of the “specialty of the cave”, a soup so unpleasant that even Shaggy doesn’t want another taste, and that’s before the Hermit reveals that it’s squirrel stew with pickled bat wings and crabgrass root.

The gang flee in fear from a lonely old man who just wants some company for the first time in ages, and head for the Mystery Machine to get the sheriff on the flimsy conviction that the Hermit must be the Creeper.

Naturally, they find the Creeper waiting for them. They run back to the barn, but Velma is cornered by the villain.

“You wouldn’t hit somebody with glasses on, would you?” she dares, and the Creeper responds by snatching the frames right off her face.

So Velma kicks him in the shin.

Seriously, the Creeper takes a lot of shots to the shins.

A barn-centric chase scene ensues, including a simplistic variation on the Freleng Door Gag, in which the Creeper chases the gang in and out of the barn doors while the scene stays static, alternating antics until Fred runs out and falls flat on his face, accidentally tripping up the Creeper. However, it’s not until the gang and the Creeper—minus Scooby and the chick—fall into a pile of hay atop a baler that things are resolved.

Following the suggestion of the barking chick, Scooby activates the baler, eviscerating the Creeper as it chops and compresses him like so much hay.

I’m kidding, of course, because this is a cartoon animated by people who have no idea how the most elementary farm machines work. The Creeper is captured along with the rest of the humans, and Scooby gets his karmic revenge for being forced over the bridge—as well as the opportunity to unmask the villain, revealing the Creeper as Mr. Carswell.

The scene cuts to Carswell in cuffs, and the Sheriff explains that he’d arrived at the bank president’s house to find the guard tied up in Carswell’s basement. The gang explain his “slick scheme”: waiting until everyone else left the bank for the day, Carswell filled his briefcase with cash, locked the safe and doors, and left. He’d later show up as the Creeper, making it appear that the “phantom” thief was fleeing the bank after walking through the walls, deliberately attracting witnesses.

Carswell evidently never considered that anyone would investigate further.

How exactly this camera was concealed, or what was “infrared” about it is never made clear. In the next shot, it’s clearly visible as Carswell shovels cash into his briefcase. The “paper” is revealed as a heat-sensitive photo of Carswell robbing the safe, providing the solid evidence he’d hoped to eliminate by chasing them... as if everything else didn’t incriminate him.

What does Carswell have to say about all that?

That’s right, it’s our second “meddling kids,” right after the first one!

The episode ends with Scooby returning the chick to its mother, and a “here we go again” type gag with more chicks hatching to imprint on him.

While memorable, it’s ultimately a weak episode. No matter how many times i've watched it over the years, i always seem to forget about the whole bit with the Hermit of the Hills, misremembering it has part of some other episode or another. In fact, there’s more that i always mistook about this episode in my memories of it:

I could have sworn that the Creeper was just saying his name over and over again. It never sounded like “paper” to me when i was a kid, but then, my crummy word recognition skills are the reason i have subtitles on in the first place.

Thing is, i’m not the only one who made this mistake. The memorability of the Creeper eventually led to him reappearing in Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase, AKA “The Writers Don’t Understand The First Thing About Computers Or Virtual Reality”, as well as a State Farm commercial, and in both of them, he could only growl his own name.

So, is it the Mandela Effect impacting later media? Or just a case of “paper” being a less obvious utterance for the Creeper than “Creeper”, especially when so many of us are accustomed to monsters saying their own names over and over?

The world may never know.

Just to note, in-game only records up to 999 so ya who knows how much higher this count is(to note again, at most I added an extra 30 to the count just cuz I’m positive I’ve gone over 1000 nickits before)

The trans meme community on Reddit is about so much more than jokes

There are dozens of subreddits for the trans community on Reddit, each designed to meet a certain psychological need.

There's r/asktransgender, dedicated to people's questions about the community, r/transgender, a subreddit for trans news, and r/transtimelines, where people can document their transitions. These are large and vibrant groups, with followers in the tens of thousands.

But for some folks who are just coming out as trans, memes and GIFs — not traditional, location-based support groups or advice-based subreddits — are where they first find community.

Take r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns, Reddit's oldest active subreddit for trans-centered shitposts, memes, and GIFs. Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns currently has over 84,300 "shitposters," many of whom post meaningful content about transphobia or transitioning, then disguise it in shitpost robes or meme make-up.

Over at r/GaySoundsShitposts, another trans-focused meme subreddit, you'll find even more introspective, cutting memes, combined with people's earnest observations about trans life. Meanwhile, r/TransQualityGifs shares narrative-driven GIFs about the trans community.

Each of these subreddits has a slightly different tone and their own rules for moderation. What they all share in common is a sense of community-building: The mods know that, given the growth in trans visibility, their subreddits now serve more than just memes.

Corinne, one of the moderators for the Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns subreddit, described it this way in a phone interview with Mashable:

"When I started, it was a lot more edgy memes. Now it's more like a place where people can leave events, support others, and comfort others while seeking humor. We didn't realize the user base had changed so much. It was just a couple thousand people just making crass jokes. But really, by Christmas last year, it had became something more than that."

As the trans community becomes more public, so do the meme groups

Despite the Trump administration's push to make life significantly harder for trans people, whether by banning them from the military or eliminating their protections in schools, the trans community has only grown more visible in recent years. Caitlyn Jenner has moved partially out of the picture, allowing other trans leaders to move into the spotlight, and more teens identify as trans or gender non-conforming than ever before.

With the spike in public awareness came a growth in trans meme-centered subreddits. Just look at how much Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns, which started in 2012, has expanded recently. In just a little over a year, the subreddit has experienced a nearly 200 percent increase in subscribers.

"I think a lot of it has to do with increasing acceptability," Corinne says. "Of course during this presidential administration we've regressed a lot in terms of human rights. But in terms of social consciousness, people are more aware of what being trans is. People want to know what options there are for people who experience gender dysphoria or who are not their assigned gender at birth. It's really hard to be able to explore those things alone ... We've noticed we've gotten more and more younger users. They are feeling more open in their lives to come out — at least come out online. So a lot of trans people turn to [us]."

GaySoundsShitposts is a much younger subreddit, having formed a little over a year ago after a controversy developed on Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns. At the time, Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns had decided to eliminate any posts that weren't strictly memes and were more supportive/advice-seeking. (The subreddit has since relaxed their policy.) Some users migrated to GaySoundsShitposts, which was meme-focused but open to all forms of trans-centered content. Since then, it has grown to over 14,500 subscribers or "hatched eggs."

"When I volunteered to be a moderator, r/GaySoundsShitposts had about 500 subscribers," Evangeline Rose Ingram, one of the founding moderators of the subreddit and also a moderator for r/TransQualityGIFs, told Mashable in an email. "In the course of the month of December, that shot up to over five thousand ... R/GSSP is now at over 14,000 subscribers from its humble beginnings a year ago, and we see about 30,000 unique viewers per month."

Neither Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns nor GaySoundsShitposts were able to support all the original content. Shortly after GaySoundsShitposts was founded, Reddit users six_inches_light and FoodOnion (who asked to be called only by their usernames) founded r/TransQualityGifs, dedicated to longer, more narrative-based content, all in the form of GIFs.

If TransQualityGifs sounds familiar, it's probably because you've heard of r/HighQualityGifs, its close relative. Part of the reason Six_Inches_light and FoodOnion founded TransQualityGifs, the founders told Mashable, was because HighQualityGifs wasn't particularly trans-friendly.

"What we wanted to encourage from the start was more trans GIFers to come out of their shell," FoodOnion told Mashable in a phone interview. "I like to do GIFs because it makes people feel represented in a more meaningful way ... With GIFs you can actually tell stories [as compared to a picture]."

The subreddit currently enjoys over 3,100 trans'scribers and counting — no small feat, given that the subreddit is fairly new and that GIFs are far more labor-intensive than memes.

Self-exploration begins with memes

Moderator of GaySoundsShitposts Val K. isn't surprised to find so many trans folks who have either just come out or are thinking of coming out on the sub.

"After a person initially comes out, they often don't know anyone else who is trans," Val told Mashable in a phone interview. "If they're early to transition or they're quite late in life they probably wont' know anyone. Trans Reddit provides a place for people to go, 'Oh, it's not just me. There are lots of other people like this.'"

Val believes that meme-focused subreddits might be particularly appealing to those who are newly out and not ready for more explicit conversations about gender identity:

"[Meme subreddits] can be good for people who aren't typically ready to talk to other people but need to get this out in some way ... People can talk about really heavy stuff and then use a custom emoji. That's kind of a way for someone to have emotional distance from the things they're going through."

Evangeline Rose Ingram, Val's fellow moderator, agrees:

"More than anywhere else on Reddit, r/GSSP is a home to me. We're all a bunch of dorks and we don't always get along perfectly, but it matters a lot to know that there are other trans people like me out there just living their lives one day at a time. For some of us, /r/GSSP is the only place we feel at home."

The content on all three subreddits reflects this safe, protected, community-driven environment. There are hundreds of posts that explore gender dysphoria, coming out to your family and anxiety about transitioning. There are posts about passing and self-harm. Sometimes the material is deeply serious and hidden in Simpsons GIFs or anime memes. Other times, the memes are just "in jokes" — material that, unless you're trans, you'll never fully understand. Which is just how it should be.

It's a satirical and humane digital subcultural. Who cares if not all people get it?

Here, for example, is a selection from a multi-part GIF series shared on TransQualityGIFs about being trans in church:

So many of the posts are profoundly, darkly comical.

"Trans people are often some of the most marginalized people in society," Corinne says. "So they develop thick skin, which translates into humor. Because a lot of trans people's experiences are pretty dark and pretty sad, there has got to be some way to keep the hope up [and this is one]."

These subreddits can only do so much

For all their inclusivity, the subreddits have limits. As a moderator for GaySoundsShitposts, Ingram works hard to ensure that the sub's subscribers have room for self-exploration (be it in meme form or the occasional advice-based post) while acknowledging the sub's limitations.

Ingram explained that at the beginning, "[W]e were fielding about one major depressive crisis for day. We ultimately had to say, 'We're not trained for this, please call a crisis line,' simply because everyone was burning out from intense stress — but we've been shaped by that. We know that, by banning someone, we could be cutting their only lifeline."

These subreddits provide community. But every community has their boundaries.

TransQualityGIFs, GaySoundsShitposts, and traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns provide a critical home base for trans Redditors who love memes and GIFs. And as happy as Val K. is to provide that space for users, Val wants folks to travel beyond large, meme-based subreddits.

One sub can't do it all.

"Our hope [for our subreddit] is that it doesn't grow too much," Val says. "People need to move on from it emotionally and ... [build] better support networks ... that are more close-knit. A community of 50 or so active people is typically what we want to get people into. That's a much better [environment] for people to be open and comfortable about stuff without needing an emotional barrier."

A smaller community — whether's it's on Reddit or elsewhere — has the advantage of intimacy and personalization. GaySoundsShitposts can affirm your gender identity, but it likely can't tell you where to find the most trans-friendly doctor in your neighborhood. You can identify powerfully and emotionally with a GIF in TransQualityGIFs, but the GIF can't come out to your parents. Traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns can validate your feelings about passing, but it can't always assist you in locating hormone replacement therapy.

These subreddits are critical. They're meaningful, affirming, communities that go beyond their stated function. It's just important to have reasonable expectations.

The memes are the start.
