Stopping the Churn: Why Some States Want to Guarantee Medicaid Coverage From Birth to Age 6
Phil Galewitz, Kaiser Health News Before the covid-19 public health emergency began in 2020, millions of children churned on and off Medicaid each year — an indication that many were losing coverage because of administrative problems, rather than because their family’s income had increased and made them ineligible. Spurred by pandemic-era lessons, several states are rethinking their enrollment…

Say What? Hearing Aids Available Over-the-Counter for as Low as $199, and Without a Prescription
Phil Galewitz, Kaiser Health News Starting Monday, consumers will be able to buy hearing aids directly off store shelves and at dramatically lower prices as a 2017 federal law finally takes effect. Because nearly all low-income children are eligible for Medicaid or the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program, the challenge is making sure parents are aware of the programs [...] and getting the kids enrolled and keeping them signed up as long as they are eligible.
Congress let CHIP program funding [link] lapse for several months in 2017, putting states in a position of having to warn families that enrollment would soon be frozen. Congress restored federal funding early in 2018.
In addition, low-income families were bombarded by news reports last year that Congress was threatening to repeal the health law that extended coverage to millions. And, in the past two years, the Trump administration has slashed funding [link] for Obamacare navigators who help people sign up for coverage.

As US Nears 1 Million Covid Deaths, One Hard-Hit County Grapples With Unthinkable Loss

She did not get vaccinated because she worried about how a new vaccine, developed in record time, might affect her heart condition. Last October, her youngest son, 45-year-old Eric Delamarter, developed…
