Throughout history, the element of water has been associated with rich symbolism.

It is an archetypal symbol of birth, death, and creativity.

It is formless, containing potential form and possibilities.

It is the realm of dreams and the astral, the home of emotions, intuition, and inspiration.

Water dominates Haitian life, so it is no wonder that there are many religious beliefs centered on it. The Lord of the Water is Agwé, and his consort is la Sirène.

Because she lives between the ordinary and the magical, between the world of land and the world of the ocean, la Sirène is the keeper of occult wisdom.

As her name suggests, she also has the most beautiful voice of all the #Lwa — she is known as the Queen of the Choir.

La Sirene is the patroness of music; her voice is renowned as it carries over the seas, calling the men she will take as her lovers. 

The spiritual nature of music cannot be defined by religion, culture, or genre. Music precedes and transcends all of those frameworks.

Music is, at its essence, the sound of spirit. When created from the heart and with truth and pure intention, music is a spiritual expression of the universal nature and the highest order.

Music is an integral part of our life as it is a way of expressing our feelings and emotions.

Always with her is Met Agwe, her husband, the spirit of the sea. They are the Divine Royal Couple manifested within the ocean, and they carry all of the mysteries contained within the sea within themselves.

As with Met Agwe, La Sirene is a keeper of the secret knowledge of the sea, and she weaves this knowledge into the songs she sings for her children.

New Semester Info: Fall 2023

Hello Flippers!!

TLDR: All club meeting Tuesday, September 19th; mandatory for all members. For returning members, fall practice is starting TOMORROW (Monday, August 21st). before coming to practice, you need to:

1. Pay your membership dues

2. Pay the carpool fees ($90)

3. Sign the code of conduct.

4. Fill out the COVID vaccine and booster form.

We have some exciting announcements as we approach the start of the new school year! Please read this email in its entirety, and as always, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Our Fall semester practices will officially begin on Monday, August 21st. Dues will be collected on this date prior to attending practice, through either our venmo (@calgymalumni), or our paypal ([email protected]). Feel free to pay now, or on your first day of practice. Check out our website for detailed information on these fees and we attached it below. 

DUES

RETURNING MEMBERS

During the first two weeks of practice (August 21st-September 5th), only returning members will be allowed to practice. Practices will occur on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 8:30-10:30pm. During these initial two weeks, we will not have a set carpool, but existing members are encouraged to unofficially organize carpool rides. 

FREE TRIAL/CARPOOL

Our Free Trial Period will occur during the following week (September 6th-September 15th) for new and interested members to check out the club! Practices during this week will be on Mondays from 8:30-10:30pm, Wednesdays from 8:30-10:30pm, and Thursdays from 8:30-10:30pm. During this period, we will have an organized carpool, and those interested will only have to pay a carpool fee for that week. Carpool fees will be $20 total. If you are a returning member who has paid for membership already, the carpool fee will be a $90 flat semester fee to cover driver expenses. To ensure that all members arrive on time, if you arrive at the carpool later than 7:55pm, you will owe the club $5. Drivers will be compensated $5 for every day they drive.

Prior to your first practice, all members, returning and new, will be asked to fill out this google form with our new Club Terms & Conditions, as well as make an account on the Ultimate Sports Connection website, which can be done here. After making an account you must register yourself as a student.

ALL-CLUB MEETING

Our All-Club Meeting - mandatory for all existing and new members - will occur on Tuesday September 19th, Location TBD. During this meeting, we will discuss club structure, fees, carpooling, general rules, as well as answer any questions that arise. We will also have sign-up sheets passed around for carpooling, our email list, payment links, etc. An option to call in via Zoom will also be available, with a zoom link sent out to the email list prior to the meeting. If you cannot make this meeting, please let myself or another officer know as soon as possible. 

SOCIALS

We also have some exciting club socials coming up, where we want to see all your lovely faces! These are open to all members and will be used to encourage new members to join the team. We highly encourage all returning members to come and meet the new folks!

--The first social is being held on Tuesday, September 5th at 6:00pm, Ice Cream on the Glade! Come hang out 

– The second social is being held on Friday, September 8th, at 6:00 pm, we will head to the gym for a movie night and dodgeball!

--The final social is being held on Monday, September 11th, at 6:30 pm, where we will meet at Sather Gate, and then get boba as a team! 

COVID POLICIES

Lastly, we want to let all our members know about the precautions we will be taking this upcoming year due to COVID. Vaccines, which are already required for students, will be required for any existing and new members looking to join the club. This google form will be required for all members, where you can upload proof of vaccination. (boosters required)

If additional boosters come out, they may be required. At any time, mask mandates may be reinstated. Although the club policies are informed by UC Berkeley, USC, and public health policies we withhold the right to add additional safety protocols at any time. 

TABLING

         Come see us out tabling on Sproul, this Wednesday the 23rd, or next Thursday the 31st! Bring your friends! We will also be at Calapalooza on Thursday
