Organ Transplant Recipients Significantly Protected by COVID-19 Vaccination
In a Brief Communication, published July 29, 2021 in the journal Transplant Infectious Disease, a team of physician-scientists at University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that solid organ transplant recipients who were vaccinated experienced an almost 80 percent reduction in the incidence of symptomatic COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated counterparts during the same time.
“Persons who have received an organ transplant are considered to be at increased risk for COVID-19 and for a severe outcome because their immune systems are necessarily suppressed to ensure their transplants are successful and lasting,” said Saima Aslam, MD, professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine and medical director of the Solid Organ Transplant Infectious Disease Service at UC San Diego Health. “These findings offer strong evidence that getting vaccinated provides significant protection.”
The researchers examined clinical data from the UC San Diego Health transplant registry from January 1, 2021 through June 2, 2021, encompassing 2,151 solid organ transplant recipients, including kidney, liver, lung and heart. Of this total number, 912 patients were fully vaccinated and 1,239 were controls (1,151 were unvaccinated and 88 partially vaccinated). Nearly 70 percent of the vaccinated patients received the mRNA-1273 vaccine (Moderna).
During the study period, there were 65 diagnosed cases of COVID-19 among the organ recipients: four among fully vaccinated individuals and 61 among the controls (two involving partially vaccinated individuals). There were no deaths among the breakthrough COVID-19 cases, but two among the 61 control cases.
“These findings are encouraging for a couple of reasons,” said co-author Kristin Mekeel, MD, chief of Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at UC San Diego Health. “First, it demonstrates real world clinical effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination in a vulnerable population. Second, the effectiveness is better than expected, given that studies have found that only about half of solid organ transplant recipients develop detectable anti-spike antibodies after vaccination."

Some 93% of 90 coronavirus serious patients treated in several Greek hospitals with a new drug developed by a team at Tel Aviv’s Sourasky Medical Center as part of the Phase II trial of the treatment were discharged in five days or fewer.
The Phase II trial confirmed the results of Phase I, which was conducted in Israel last winter and saw 29 out of 30 patients in moderate to serious condition recover within days.
“The main goal of this study was to verify that the drug is safe,” Prof. Nadir Arber said.
“To this day we have not registered any significant side effect in any patient from both groups.
”The trial was conducted in Athens because Israel did not have enough relevant patients. The principal investigator was Greece’s coronavirus commissioner, Prof. Sotiris Tsiodras.
Arber and his team, including Dr. Shiran Shapira, developed the drug based on a molecule that the professor has been studying for 25 years called CD24, which is naturally present in the body.
“It is important to remember that 19 out of 20 COVID-19 patients do not need any therapy,” Arber said. “After a window of five to 12 days, some 5% of the patients start to deteriorate.”
The main cause of the clinical deterioration is an over activation of the immune system, also known as a cytokine storm. In case of COVID-19 patients, the system starts attacking healthy cells in the lungs.
“This is exactly the problem that our drug targets,” he said.
CD24 is a small protein that is anchored to the membrane of the cells and it serves many functions including regulating the mechanism responsible for the cytokine storm.
Arber stressed that their treatment, EXO-CD24, does not affect the immune system as a whole, but only targets this specific mechanism, helping find again its correct balance.
“This is precision medicine,” he said. “We are very happy that we have found a tool to tackle the physiology of the disease.”
“Steroids for example shut down the entire immune system,” he further explained.
“We are balancing the part responsible for the cytokine storms using the endogenous mechanism of the body, meaning tools offered by the body itself.”
Arber noted that another breakthrough element of this treatment is its delivery.
“We are employing exosomes, very small vesicles derived from the membrane of the cells which are responsible for the exchange of information between them,” he said.
“By managing to deliver them exactly where they are needed, we avoid many side effects,” he added.
The team is now ready to launch the last phase of the study.
“As promising as the findings of the first phases of a treatment can be, no one can be sure of anything until results are compared to the ones of patients who receive a placebo,” he said.
Some 155 coronavirus patients will take part in the study. Two-thirds of them will be administered the drug, and one-third a placebo.
The study will be conducted in Israel and it might be also carried out in other places if the number of patients in the country will not suffice.
“We hope to complete it by the end of the year,” Arber said.
If the results are confirmed, he vowed that the treatment can be made available relatively quickly and at a low cost.
“In addition, a success could pave the wave to treat many other diseases,” he concluded.

The school board just announced mandatory masks in K-6 grades for the full school year. The vote was 5-2.
The proposal to require masks at all grade levels failed 4-3.
At least this allows thoes that are too young to have some protection.

Yeah, so if you’re able to, please get vaccinated and please continue to social distance. And for the love of all that’s good, please keep wearing face masks in public until we are actually through this pandemic

How it started / How it went....
What a shocker! Most of the Liberal's Covid-19 spending went to the rich after breaking records for lobbying.
When someone tells you who they are, believe them.

Even if 100% of people got the vaccine it would not go back to normal. Look at Israel, Gibraltar, the most vaxxed places in the world, and most of their new cases are in fully vaxxed. Also, even if 0 people too the vaccine, the government does not have the right to control us like this. People need to be able to make their own choices "my body, my choice." Even if covid had a 100% fatality rate instead of a 99% survival rate, lockdowns are fascist and an abuse of power.
1) The vaccine does not 100% prevent the virus. No vaccine can do that. Viruses vary and evolve too much. What the vaccine does do is make your body able to respond to the virus more easily, so if you get it, the chance of which is already significantly reduced by the vaccine strengthening your immune system, your case will likely be minor or asymptomatic rather than leaving you bedridden for weeks or hospitalized.
Let's get into how the vaccine works. There are two kinds of COVID vaccines, and both have been tested extensively and are safe. One is an mRNA vaccine that directly gives your body protein "instructions" for how to make antibodies for the particular virus. The other is a standard vaccine that injects imitation viruses that look like the real virus but are completely harmless. This allows your body to naturally develop the antibodies to the virus.
The vaccine does not have a tracking chip, because there are not tracking chips small enough to fit into the needle. The vaccine doesn't cause you to get autism (you can't even get autism artificially, you're either born with it or you aren't) or any other sort of mental or physical disorder. The vaccine is not able to impact your body that way.
2) "My body my choice" works when it's only your body at risk. That isn't true in this case. Many people have chronic illnesses and conditions that make it impossible for them to get the vaccine. The more people who can get the vaccine and don't, the higher the risk is of the people who can't get the vaccine to get sick. It's not just about you. It's about everyone around you and your community.
3) Lockdowns are one thing when there isn't a good reason for them. Lockdowns are another thing when there is. And it wasn't just the government telling you this, it was scientists worldwide and throughout the nation that are not affiliated with the government. Take a look at the principle of Occam's Razor, which states that usually, the simplest explanation is the correct one. Do you really think that every major country is going to round up their scientists and make them join a shared secret conspiracy? No. That wouldn't work, from a sociological standpoint. There is no "illuminati" group controlling everything, because by this point, with the technology we have, there would've been actual cold hard proof.
4) COVID is real, and I've had it. Thankfully I had a relatively minor case, but I know people who have died from it. It's not the flu. It's not a branch of the common cold. It is a virus that feels and acts very different and causes similar but different symptoms. I've had the flu and the common cold before. They do not feel remotely like COVID. And again, there is absolutely no way that every single country would somehow come together homogenously to fake a virus. It's impossible given how human psychology works.
You aren't just responsible for yourself here. You're responsible for everyone you come into contact with. You're responsible for the store clerk you talked to with a rare allergy to the vaccine ingredients. You're responsible for the family with the baby you sat next to on the bus who can't get vaccinated yet because the vaccine has not been tested on the very young. You're responsible for the elderly war veteran with a dangerous chronic condition that you saw at the restaurant. And you're responsible for the store clerk's mother, who lives in an area where vaccines are scarce. And all the other babies at the baby's day care. So on and so forth.
If you're carrying the virus with or without knowing it, which is far, far, far more likely to happen when you're unvaccinated, you are endangering the lives and well-being of countless other vulnerable individuals all over your community.
Getting the vaccine protects your family, your neighbors, and by extension, your country. This is not political. This is science, independent third-party science that has been proven and proven and proven to be safe and reliable.
Do it for them. Do it for yourself. Get the shot.

Republican governors in southern states seem to be in a rush to kill off their conservative, anti-vax, mask-hating constituents. Which, tbh I wouldn’t have a problem with ….if it was just them affected by their willfully aggressive ignorance. But their obstinate refusal to wear face masks and get vaccinated is putting a lot of innocent people at risk. Needlessly. Foolishly. And selfishly.
But now he’s sorry
