My D&D character has been a real butthead recently and it's both stressful (because I'm very sensitive to hurting other people's feelings) and extremely satisfying. Because their worst faults used to just be lines in my backstory doc, but now that we're in a situation where they're falling into those faults, it's happening organically in the roleplay. In a lot of ways, it's easy to embody the good traits you write down about your character, and it's a lot harder to lean into the negative ones. The fact that the faults feel like a natural extension of the character I've been building and embodying for a year is deeply gratifying.
And some of the ways things have played out have actually recontextualized parts of their backstory and some of their habits. My character checks in with other party members a lot, but since entering into Butthead Mode they haven't checked in with anyone the way they did before. I now realize that behavior was a habit they built in order to avoid getting into Butthead Mode to begin with. I'm now realizing that my character must have been in Butthead Mode during a particularly important moment in their backstory in a way I hadn't considered before. And what's more, I don't think my character realizes that they were like this during that time either.
Roleplaying and embodying a character is just such a fascinating exercise. But goodness I hope Butthead Mode can end soon. My social anxiety will thank me.

Note: sem means fascination. Replaced miracles with it as there wasn’t any Vulcan translation for it.

I just wrote a letter from my character to another character in the party and I’m gonna work with my DM to figure out how I can send it to them as a handout (we play digitally, or else I would totally write it out by hand to give to them directly). I’m so PUMPED for all the juicy character interactions this will spark. ACoFaF was right, sending letters in your D&D game absolutely slaps.
