Kit Mountain, Cliffs of the Sierra Ponce and the Santa Elena Canyon (Big Bend National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the west while taking in views across desert and mountains present at Sotol Vista Overlook in Big Bend National Park. To create a panoramic, wide-angle image, I cropped a portion of the foreground and blue skies.

Dodge Charger Rental Car and the Santa Elena Canyon (Big Bend National Park)
flickr
Dodge Charger Rental Car and the Santa Elena Canyon (Big Bend National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: An idea I got from one on Flickr. The idea being to use the back of a vehicle and then capture a beyond image with blue skies above. Here I used the Santa Elena Canyon and the cliffs of the Sierra Ponce for that backdrop along with blue skies and clouds. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 5. I then exported a TIFF image to Nik Color Efex Pro 4 where I added a Polarization and Pro Contrast filter for that last effect on the image captured.

Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park
flickr
Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at the Santa Elena Canyon Overlook and a view looking to the southwest and namesake canyon. My thinking in composing this image was the zoom in with the focal length such that most of the canyon filled up the image and a little bit of the cliffs of the Sierra Ponce then stretched to fill out to the image edge.

Stay Present (Big Bend National Park)
flickr
Stay Present (Big Bend National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at the Sotol Vista Overlook with a view looking to the west across the desert landscape present in this part of Big Bend National Park. My thinking in composing this image was to use the higher ground I was standing on and capture that sweeping view across the landscape to my front. That would be kind of a layered view with a different hillsides and mountains, leading up to the Santa Elena Canyon and cliffs of the Sierra Ponce off in the distance. The blue skies would then be that color contrast to complement the image with earth-tones present in the lower portion. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Cliffs of the Sierra Ponce Caught in the Light of the Morning Sun (Big Bend National Park)

Cliffs of the Sierra Ponce Caught in the Light of the Morning Sun (Big Bend National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the west while walking the Santa Elena Canyon Trail and taking in view of the towering cliffs of the Sierra Ponce. This portion of the cliffs and canyon wall are on the US side of the border. One can see a little bit of these Santa Elena Canyon on the bottom image left, with the Mexican side of the border caught in shadows. My thinking in composing this image was a focus on the cliff walls caught in the sunlight and zoom in with the focal length and have all of it filling up much of the image. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

Itineraries in Exploring Big Bend National Park
flickr
Itineraries in Exploring Big Bend National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the southeast while taking in views across the Rio Grande and border with Mexico and the tall cliffs of the Sierra Ponce stretching off to a distant horizon. By including some nearby plant-life and vegetation, I hoped to create more of a layers look, from near to far. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

A Personal Photo Assignment in Big Bend National Park
flickr
A Personal Photo Assignment in Big Bend National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views with the Santa Elena Canyon and the cliffs of the Sierra Ponce. In composing this image, I wanted to focus on those cliff walls, with the canyon itself and the border of the US and Mexico to be more or less image center. There would be a sweeping view across the desert landscape leading up to the Santa Elena Canyon. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

Setting a Change in Scenery for a Chance of Discovery (Big Bend National Park)

Setting a Change in Scenery for a Chance of Discovery (Big Bend National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the Santa Elena Canyon Trail with a view looking to the southeast across the limestone cliffs of the Sierra Ponce and into Mexico. My thinking in composing this image was to capture a look across the cliff walls with one portion being only maybe 100 feet away and then continuing that profile type look to the more distant points further off near the horizon. I closed down slightly on the aperture to ensure more of the points along the cliff wall were in focus. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Making a Case for Wanderlust in Our National Parks (Big Bend National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: From a pullout exhibit along the main park road heading out to the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park. The view is looking towards the northwest with the cliffs of the Sierra Ponce and the Santa Elena Canyon. My thinking in composing this image was to take advantage of the higher ground that I was on and capture a sweeping view across the desert landscape leading up to those cliffs. Blue skies with clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones present in the lower portion of the image. I then cropped a portion of the skies above to create more of a panoramic, wide angle feel to the image.

Playtime and Fun in the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While heading out to walk the Santa Elena Canyon Trail with a view looking to the southeast and across the Rio Grande to some people enjoying water playtime. My thinking in composing this image was to angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward and bring the Sierra Ponce Cliffs on the Mexican side of the border into the upper portion of the image. I would then crop a portion of the foreground with the Rio Grande and create this panoramic, wide-angle feel to an image captured.

Zoomed in to Show Just a Hint of Immense Cliff Walls (Big Bend National Park)
flickr
Zoomed in to Show Just a Hint of Immense Cliff Walls (Big Bend National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While I was heading down to the border with the Santa Elena Canyon, I found a rise of land on the road that allowed me to look across some of the vibrant green and yellow field of trees to my front. Just beyond was a sight one can hardly miss while in Big Bend National Park on the border of Mexico. Those canyon walls seem to just rise from the ground and dwarf everything around with their 1500' cliff walls. I'd read many an article on photography sites noting the importance of showing less when composing an image from time to time. The idea is to let the mind image what is beyond. Here zooming in helped to bring out the enormous feel to the canyon walls of the Santa Elena Canyon.

From the Shores of the Rio Grande and the Sierra Ponce Cliffs (Big Bend National Park)
flickr
From the Shores of the Rio Grande and the Sierra Ponce Cliffs (Big Bend National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: What I wanted to capture with this image wasn't just a look across the cliff-face of the Sierra Ponce Cliffs. I wanted to include that look with the Rio Grande (which just happened to be to my immediate front). The idea would be to have to look across the border with Mexico and see those cliffs stretching on to the far off horizon in the image. With some cropping of the foreground, I was then able to add a more panoramic look to the final image, creating a wide sweeping view.
