Places of the mind
Reflection of my creative process:
I started this assignment for Practice 1: media trying to answer a simple question: Where is my mind? Of course, the literal answer to this is: Here in the UK, but then if I look further within myself I started this roller coaster of emotions and thoughts. Uncertainty, anger, love, lust, creativity and excitement were some of the emotions I carry with me most of the time now. I give a little further thinking and I ask myself what time am I living at? is it the past, present or future?
So I write down this and it looks like this... well, kind of:

...So... Where the is my mind?
I tried to make some brain connections of the main question and realise that I am enjoying myself here in this new country, but also, uncertainty is my main emotion most of the time, not that is good or bad, is just what it is, a typical emotion of a person that doesn’t know what the is going to happen in the next couple of months. My nature is to plan ahead my life, and today I have no control of the circumstances that are occurring in my life at this point, but, I have the possibility of doing my best to achieve everything I plan to if I make every day count. Basically to “seize the day”.
So, having this solve, with this 3 variables in “Mind”, (UK, Uncertainty and present) I started to give myself time to look for further visuals that inspire this practice.
Visual Inspiration

Cale Atkinson is an artist that I have been following on Instagram for a while and his approach to character are really interesting, emphasising in the facial expressions of the character, in the other hand, the line of the backgrounds are really outstanding, the schemes and silhouettes give a sense of depth that I found this fascinating.
Then I went to my favourite place in the University of Hertfordshire, The Learning Resources Centre (LRC) and found a magical book to inspire me for some illustration references:
Fig 4. Illustration by David Wilcox
Tumblr media
More than the colours or the technique, the concept of a cute teddy bear with lots of demons coming from its head, seems to resonate with me. The idea of a tender image, been the birthplace of these obscure creatures seems kind of entropic and dark.
Fig 5. Illustration by Carole Kabrin

The loose line, the combination of colours and the sketchy lines, steer my eye towards this art as well.
Fig 6. Illustration by John Jude Palencar
Tumblr media
This is probably my favourite “new” discovered artist. Mr Palencar seems to acknowledge the potential of self-discovered been by the reading, or at least this is what inspired to me. In this illustration I can found many inspirations, the movement, the lighting and of course, the concept of liberation in the “Snakes”, that seems the things that give this piece, a great dynamic rhythm.
Fig 7. Illustration by Karen Chandler

THIS IS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR...!
This beautiful illustration by Karen Chandler represents what Uncertainty means to me, a vast place with little to grasp. The loneliness, the cold, the harsh, this is what wondering around with no future looks likes to me.
Learning outcomes of my research:
With this visit to the LRC, I found great sources for inspiration, I understood the colour values, contrast and composition within an image. I will apply this to my visuals for this assignment.
Now I have all my visual gallery updated, now it’s time to sketch some ideas.

Disclaimer: I received this book from netgalley for a honest review
Review: This was such a cute and funny book! I thought the illustrations were really good and the story line was adorable. It is a good little lesson book also for children to show them that other people have hard work they have to do as well and that maybe someone else could be going through similar situations as you, you just need to get to know them and find out! Really great book, definitely will add this to my future kid book list!
