Tommy Adkins, Bob Mills, and the wonders of genealogy

Genealogy chart in Tommy Adkins' letter to Bob Mills

On October 17, 1979, ten months after the estate of Tom Packard had been closed, Tommy L. Adkins (of 4825 Roscommon Drive in Lansing, Michigan) wrote Bob Mills, asking for help in gathering the history of his family, using a  genealogy pedigree chart. Following this form letter, he notes that "after your grandmother [Mable Hattie Packard?] past the family just sort of lost track of your grandmothers side of the family," asking for any assistance, noting he has "records, documents and such on the packard side going back as far as 1636 to Samuel Packard." He further claimed he had "verified many times over this info every step of the way" and also has the "names of a good many of the brothers & sisters, aunts and uncles etc." That may be a bit optimistic, because looking back at the claims now, a number of them are clearly faulty.

On October 21st, Bob wrote Tommy Adkins a letter of response, saying that he was  thrilled because "Mabel [sic, should be Mable] Hattie Packard and the Landstroms were household words in my father and grandfather's  houses." He further noted that while  he  never met Mable, that his family, and himself, "made several trips to Shelburne Falls and Heath, and exchanged visits with Charlie Packard, John Packard, and Margaret Packard during my youth." He also added that Tommy's interest in family history was interesting, since he added information "from a family chart I made up in 1970 which hangs on our wall at home."

He then hilariously, before accounting the children of Cyrus Winfield Packard with Dora Mills and Clementina Cheney, calls him "the prolific old goat that started much of the recent family history with three  wives producing 12 children." After that, he notes that his grandfather, RBM I ("Uncle Rob") "managed hotels in Cincinnati and elsewhere," dying in 1950, with his wife Hattie E. Mills dying in 1949, also in Cincinnati, with his grandparents and parents buried in a family plot in Spring Grove Cemetery.

He goes on in his letter by noting that Uncle Rob and Hattie "adopted my father and changed his name to Mills when he was very young," and that they had a "child of their own, Stanley Sterling Mills, born in 1901 who died in 1934 in some bizarre manner." He then outlines his own two children, those of his sister Helen, and those  of his sister  Carol. He ends by saying that he is "fascinated with your chart going back to Samuel Packard in 1636," adding that he believes "migrated from Hingham, England," asking  "since my records are very sketchy, could you send me a copy of your history? I would appreciate it very much." That is how family histories were conducted then and are done much differently now, without a doubt.

The letter ends by him noting his role as a professor of psychology and criminal justice  at the University of Cincinnati, "where I direct our graduate program in criminal justice," noting that he would be glad to give more details if Tommy would like.

Following this is the response from Tommy, which reveals much about him and his life. The letter, mostly in blue pen ink on hole-punched paper, is undated, but I would say it would have to be written in either late October 1979 or early November 1979. Of course, Tommy was, as he notes in his letter, delighted to hear from Bob, adding that they are "cousins through my wife Janet Elizabeth (Hall) Adkins, who by the way sends her regards and best wishes." He then gladly remarked that it was a pleasure to be "finally contacted [by] someone in the family who wants to know the families['] history." He then buffs out the Packards by declaring it "one of the oldest families in this country," saying members served in King Philips' War in 1675-6, adding that "I feel we all need  to know where we come from so that we can better understand who we are," which is often a motto for genealogists!

He prefaces his list of family information by saying that "the only time I actually have to keep up with my correspondence is late in the evening." He then lists the generations, which can be visualized as follows, showing 10 generations: RBM III-RBM II-Cyrus W.-William H.-Barnabas III-Barnabas II-Barnabas I-John-Zaccheus-Samuel. He adds to this that "there were three Barnabas's in a row each of the last two [were] the son of the former." After that, he was apparently tired, as he says "that's about all the energy left in me" as he switches to pencil for some reason (maybe because its easier than writing in pen? He notes that Harold Packard died one year after Tom Packard which was "a great shame," and that he has "a great amount of history on other members of the family not in our direct line" which he would send if he had time.

He closes his letter by talking about himself and his wife Janet or "Jan." He notes he is an auditor for HEW, saying that he and Jan moved to Lansing, Michigan from Massachusetts in June of that year. Additionally they have three children, he notes, who are as follows: Thomas A. Adkins, Heathe Jo Adkins, and Sarah Christen Adkins. The letter ends by saying he became interested in genealogy three years before (in 1976) and has, since then, "some remarkable success, [and] also some setbacks," while also asking for the birthdays and places of birth of Bob's children, as it likely seemed like a fair trade to him, perhaps.

What happened to Tommy Adkins?  I don't know, as I could only find, with a quick search a person of the same name in Georgia, but not one in Michigan. Searches for the others have been, at this time, unsuccessful, even when looking at who lives at that current address at the present time.

【希望之声2020年6月6日】（希望之声记者高健雯综合报导）澳门「赌王」何鸿燊上月26日去世后，身后巨额遗产将如何分配引发外界关注。据报导，他与元配夫人所生的女儿何超雄昨天（5日）率先向香港法院提交「知会备忘」，要求法院在没有通知其代表律师的情况下，不可批出何鸿燊遗产的授予书。有律师解读，此举意味家族就遗产分配「未有共识」，预计引发遗产争夺官司的可能大增。

综合媒体报导，何鸿燊生前有4房配偶，17名子女。据报导，何家4房已公开的资产就将近800亿港币，估计何鸿燊遗产则可能达到5000亿港币。

据香港明报引述大律师何旳匡表示，当有自称遗产执行人或管理人申请遗产，在授予遗产认证书前，处方会通知「知会备忘」登记人，登记人届时可对遗产分配提出反对，如果不能解决，法庭将开庭处理遗产争议。

对于今次何超雄的申请，何旳匡认为引发争产的机会大增，因为家族人士若有共识，就不需要提出「知会备忘」。

另据中央社报导，何鸿燊于2009年病倒后，何家就曾传出争夺遗产风波，更一度闹上法庭。直到2011年3月，何鸿燊发表声明称与家人达成共识，各成员签订了家族和解协定，争产风波告一段落。但当时何鸿燊并没有公布具体协定内容。

此外，何超雄上月还曾入禀高院，要求同房三姊何超贤向其律师团队交出亡母黎婉华两个信托基金，即Stanley and Clementina Family Trust和The Clementina Ho Trust的信托契约，及资产分配文件等，以研究日后采取法律行动。

据质料显示，香港过去也曾有富豪家族成员采取类似行动，其中最为人知的是华懋集团前主席龚如心的争产官司。

2007年龚如心逝世后，4方面人士向遗产承办处提交「知会备忘」。其中风水师陈振聪于龚如心出殡翌日便向高院提交「知会备忘」，声称龚如心在2006年10月立下遗嘱，将所有遗产交给他。但陈振聪最终被裁定持有的遗嘱属伪造而败诉，除赔讼费外，后来更被警方起诉，于2013年被裁定伪造遗嘱及行使虚假文书罪成，判监12年。

Cuộc đời vua sòng bài Macau Stanley Ho

Stanley Ho trải qua nhiều biến cố, nhưng không chấp nhận đầu hàng dễ dàng. Điều duy nhất cản bước ông chỉ là bệnh tật khi tuổi già.

Stanley Ho Hung-sun, tài phiệt lãnh đạo đế chế casino lớn nhất châu Á SJM Holdings hôm nay (26/5) qua đời ở tuổi 98. Ông được đánh giá là một phần rất quan trọng của Hong Kong và có ảnh hưởng lớn đến ngành sòng bài Macau suốt nhiều thập kỷ.

Stanley Ho sinh năm 1921 trong một gia tộc danh giá ở Hong Kong. Ông của Ho - Ho Fook làm trung gian buôn bán cho Jardine Matheson (một công ty thương mại của Anh) trong các giao dịch giữa Trung Quốc và Hong Kong. Cha ông - Ho Kwong cũng làm trung gian cho Sassoon - một công ty thương mại quyền lực khác của Anh.

Dù vậy, SCMP cho biết đến thập niên 30, Đại suy thoái khiến Ho Kwong phá sản. Cả gia đình rơi vào cảnh nghèo khổ. Stanley Ho khi đó thường xuyên thiếu ăn và có lúc không đủ tiền để đến nha sĩ nhổ răng đau.

Đến năm 1941, Nhật Bản tiếp quản Hong Kong, buộc Stanley bỏ học cao đẳng và chuyển tới Macau. Ho ban đầu làm việc cho Macau Cooperative Company - khi đó là công ty lớn nhất Macau. Công ty này bán hàng xa xỉ, máy móc, gạo và nhiều nhu yếu phẩm khác.

Ông kết hôn với người vợ đầu tiên - Clementina Angela Leitao năm 1942 tại Macau. Bà xuất thân từ một gia đình thương nhân Bồ Đào Nha giàu có. Đây cũng là bước đệm giúp Ho bước chân vào giới thượng lưu Macau.

Nhờ kinh doanh, Ho kiếm được số tiền lớn đầu tiên năm 24 tuổi. Ông đã dùng phần lớn số tiền kiếm được thời kỳ này để mở một công ty xây dựng, kiếm được khoản lớn khi chiến tranh kết thúc và Hong Kong bùng nổ xây dựng.

Ho bước chân vào ngành sòng bài đầu thập niên 60. Khi đó, ông thành lập một nhóm nhà đầu tư, giành độc quyền điều hành các casino tại Macau khi hứa hẹn với chính quyền Bồ Đào Nha khi đó rằng việc này sẽ quảng bá du lịch và cải thiện cơ sở hạ tầng tại đây. Năm 1961, công ty này được đặt tên Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau (STDM), và casino trung tâm - Lisboa Casino Hotel sau đó cũng nhanh chóng nổi tiếng trên thế giới.

Việc kinh doanh của STDM tăng vọt vào thập niên 80, khi người Trung Quốc bắt đầu giàu lên và đổ tới các casino của Ho chơi. Ông đã nghĩ ra một chiến lược rất lời lãi, là sử dụng các môi giới thu hút khách đến phòng VIP. Ho sẽ chia doanh thu với những người lôi kéo được khách chơi giàu có châu Á đến Macau.

Dù vậy, các khách sạn và casino của ông cũng thu hút các băng nhóm hoạt động phi pháp. Giới chức tư pháp và các nhà phân tích sòng bài khắp thế giới cáo buộc các casino của ông, đặc biệt là các phòng VIP, được các tổ chức tội phạm sử dụng để rửa tiền.

Trả lời New York Times năm 2007, Ho không phủ nhận các cáo buộc này. Ông nói rằng trong thập niên 80 và 90, "bất kỳ ai tham gia vào ngành sòng bài đều có nguy cơ vướng vào những cáo buộc như vậy".

Bồ Đào Nha trao trả Macau cho Trung Quốc năm 1999. Sự độc quyền của Ho cũng chỉ kéo dài đến năm 2002, khi Bắc Kinh yêu cầu Macau mở cửa cho các hãng điều hành sòng bài nước ngoài. Những gã khổng lồ từ Mỹ như Steve Wynn và Sheldon G. Adelson đã mở các khu sòng bài hoành tráng, trị giá hàng tỷ USD với cả nhà hàng, sân khấu biểu diễn và khách sạn 5 sao.

"Stanley Ho sẽ không làm ăn tốt được nữa đâu", Adelson - Chủ tịch Las Vegas Sands Corporation cho biết trong một bài phỏng vấn năm 2007, "Ông ấy chưa bao giờ phải cạnh tranh trong một thị trường thực sự cả".

Trên thực tế, cạnh tranh tăng lên lại khiến Ho quyết định hiện đại hóa hoạt động và xây thêm các khách sạn - casino xa xỉ mới. Lợi nhuận của ông tăng vọt khi người giàu Trung Quốc đổ đến Macau, biến nơi này thành điểm đến sòng bạc lớn nhất thế giới, vượt Las Vegas năm 2006.

Theo WSJ, công ty sòng bài của ông - SJM Holdings (thuộc STDM) hiện điều hành 20 trong 35 casino tại Macau. Ông cũng xây dựng nhiều dự án bất động sản lớn tại đây, phát triển dịch vụ phà và hỗ trợ vốn cho sân bay của Macau.

Đế chế sòng bài của Ho từng đóng góp khoảng nửa doanh thu thuế cho chính quyền Macau. Việc này giúp ông có một đại lộ riêng mang tên mình tại đây. Ho cũng từng là một trong những người giàu nhất châu Á trong nhiều thập kỷ. Khi quyết định nghỉ hưu năm 2018, tài sản của ông là 50 tỷ đôla Hong Kong (6,4 tỷ USD). Hiện tại, Ho không còn trong danh sách tỷ phú của Forbes.  

"Đây là mất mát lớn với Hong Kong", Stewart Leung Chi-kin - chủ tịch Hiệp hội Bất động sản Hong Kong (Reda) cho biết khi nghe tin Stanley Ho qua đời. Ho từng làm chủ tịch tổ chức này trong 20 năm, cho đến năm 2011. "Ho đã đóng góp rất nhiều cho ngành bất động sản trong nhiệm kỳ ở Reda. Ông ấy chưa bao giờ lùi bước kể cả khi chính quyền gây sức ép. Ông ấy luôn đặt lợi ích của Hong Kong lên đầu", ông nói.

New York Times nhận định vấn đề duy nhất cản bước Ho là bệnh tật khi tuổi già, khiến ông càng thêm dễ tổn thương trước những đối thủ nguy hiểm nhất - mâu thuẫn gia đình. Ho có tổng cộng 4 người vợ và 17 người con. Sau khi ngã quỵ tại nhà riêng năm 2009, Ho nhập viện suốt 7 tháng.

Cuộc chiến tranh giành quyền thừa kế bùng nổ giữa Ho và người thân khi ông còn đang hồi phục sau cuộc phẫu thuật não. Việc này đã khiến tất cả phải ngồi lại đàm phán. Các thành viên trong gia đình sau đó dàn xếp với nhau và cùng đưa ra thông báo vào tháng 3/2011, khẳng định: "Chúng tôi đồng ý sẽ cùng làm việc với nhau và tiếp tục phát triển công ty sòng bài".

Tháng 6/2018, ở tuổi 96, Ho từ chức Chủ tịch SJM Holdings. Quyền lãnh đạo được trao cho con gái Daisy Ho.

Stanley Ho trước đó cũng đã trao quyền kiểm soát đế chế đa ngành Shun Tak Holdings cho con gái Pansy Ho. Bà khi ấy đã nắm cổ phần lớn trong MGM Macau - một liên doanh casino - khách sạn xa xỉ thành lập năm 2007 theo thỏa thuận giữa Ho và MGM Mirage của Wynn. Việc này cho thấy sự nhạy bén của Ho trong những năm cuối sự nghiệp.

Con trai ông - Lawrence Ho là CEO Melco Crown Entertainment. Đây là liên doanh casino giữa Stanley Ho và Crown Limited - một trong những công ty giải trí - sòng bài lớn nhất Australia. Công ty này cũng thành lập năm 2007.

Ho rất thích khiêu vũ và còn nổi tiếng vì đã chi hàng tỷ đôla làm từ thiện. Tên của ông xuất hiện trên 12 bảo tàng, bệnh viện và trung tâm thể thao ở Hong Kong và Macau. Ông từng trả tới 2,57 triệu đôla Hong Kong cho một cây nấm truffle một tại buổi đấu giá từ thiện, và trả lại hai đồ vật bị đánh cắp khỏi Di Hòa Viên cho Trung Quốc.

Trong suốt cuộc đời, Ho luôn cho thấy ông là người rất kiên cường. "Ông ấy là kiểu người không chấp nhận thất bại", Ricardo Pinto - người phụ trách tạp chí Macau Closer cho biết trên NYT năm 2007. Trong một cuộc phỏng vấn hiếm hoi với The Closer năm đó, Ho từng nói: "Tôi thích các thử thách và không bao giờ chấp nhận nói "Không" một cách dễ dàng".

Elm Court, often referred to as Phillips Mansion, is a historic mansion located in Butler, Pennsylvania, Butler County, Pennsylvania. It was designed by noted architect Benno Janssen and built in 1929-1930. This 40-room residence is set into a hillside. The house measures 125.7 feet by 159 feet, and is built around a central courtyard. It is constructed of steel reinforced concrete and faced with limestone, marble, and slate. The house features complex slate roofs with many gables, large numbers of rectangular, oriel, and bay windows, interesting chimney treatments, and carved stone detailing reflecting the Tudor Revival style.[2]

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.[1]

It was completed in 1931 by Benno Jannsen, a well known Pittsburgh architect. The mansion housed the famous Skinner Organ, Opus 783. Although the mansion is over 70 years old, it hasn’t had many changes in ownership. Frederick R. Koch purchased the mansion in 1988 for $1 million US dollars from Dean E. Burget and his wife, Undine Phillips Burget, who was born there. The Burgets bought the mansion in 1978

Frederick Robinson Koch (/ˈkoʊk/; born August 26, 1933)[1] is an American collector and philanthropist, the eldest of the four sons born to American industrialist Fred Chase Koch, founder of what is now Koch Industries, and Mary Clementine (Robinson) Koch.

Koch’s Frederick R. Koch Foundation is a major donor in New York to the Pierpont Morgan Library,[9] and the Frick Collection and, in Pittsburgh, to the Carnegie Museum of Art.[3] Of particular note are The Frederick R. Koch Collections at the Harvard Theater Collection, Houghton Library at Harvard University, and at Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Yale president Richard C. Levin described the Koch collection as “one of the greatest collections to come to Yale since the year of its founding.”[10]

Since the 1980s, Koch has bought, restored and maintained a number of historic properties in the United States and abroad, including the Donahue house, a Woolworth mansion in Manhattan;[11] the Habsburg hunting lodge Schloss Blühnbach near Salzburg;[7][12][13] the Romanesque Villa Torre Clementina in Cap Martin, France; and Elm Court, a Tudor Gothic manse in Butler, Pennsylvania. Koch financed the full reconstruction of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theater in England from its 1879 remains, although his role as the project’s patron was kept secret for years.[7]

In 1990, Koch bought Sutton Place near Guildford (Surrey, England),[14] the former residence of J. Paul Getty and the legendary meeting place of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, from another reclusive art collector, Stanley Seeger,[15] “redecorated the house and hung his art collection, but is said never to have spent a night under its roof before selling it for £32m” in 1999.[16] Other sources say he operated it as the Sutton Place Foundation, open to the public for more than 25 years,[17] and that he ultimately sold the property in 2005.[7]

Koch served for many years on the boards of directors of the Spoleto Festival and The Royal Shakespeare Company. He remains an active, long-serving board member of the Metropolitan Opera and the Film Society of Lincoln Center.[citation needed] In 2010, The New Yorker reported that Koch had “moved to Monaco, which has no income tax”.[6] Despite lavish philanthropy and millions spent on art acquisitions and property restoration, Koch is said to have a frugal streak, and reportedly “prefers taking the public bus in New York and typically flies commercial”, according to Vanity Fair.[7]
