Last night, I attended the 2023 TMAF Chamberfest II performance at the National Concert Hall in Taiwan. The performance was a collaboration between “master” musicians who are principals, associate principals, or professors in national orchestras from various countries, and emerging young musicians.
The concert was divided into two parts, featuring a total of eight pieces. I particularly enjoyed “A. Dvořák: String Quartet №12 in F major, ‘American’, Op.96” performed by Ben Hong, the current associate principal cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, alongside two young violinists, Chieh-An Yu and Hsin Chien, and a young violist, Lukas Shrout.
Additionally, I admired the performance of “F. Schubert: String Quintet in C major, Op.956”, which was led by Mark Kosower, principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and featured two young violinists, Risa Hokamura and Chin Chien, a young violist, Bill Ko, and a young cellist, Natalie Lin.
My appreciation for their performances stems from the way the musicians immersed themselves in the melodies, which was evident from their natural bodily rhythms during the performance. In particular, the delicacy of Risa Hokamura’s violin playing left me profoundly moved.
However, the highlight of the evening for me was the final piece, “L. Spohr: Nonet in F Major, Op.31”, performed by Hsin-Yun Huang, currently a faculty member at the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music, along with young violinist Minami Yoshida, young cellist I-Chang Edison Liu, young double bass player Logan Nelson, young flutist Shuyu Yang, young oboist Yan Yin Lai, young clarinetist Yoshihiro Okuyama, young bassoonist Yu Chung, and young horn player James Picarello.
This was the only piece during the concert that had me smiling from beginning to end. Firstly, the team demonstrated incredible harmony. The musicians weren’t just focused on the music scores in front of them or lost in their own melodies with closed eyes. Instead, I frequently observed them exchanging smiles and looks of affirmation with their partners, seamlessly passing the melody to one another. This high-level performance had me completely absorbed. It gave me the same feeling I had when I saw the very young Japanese violinist Hina Maeda perform in Taiwan at the end of February this year. The exceptional performance by each member of this team made the experience thoroughly enjoyable.
Lastly, I am very much looking forward to your 2023 TMAF All-Star Concert at the National Concert Hall in Taiwan on August 9!

How Can You Take Steps To Equip Yourself To Be An International Artist―Experience As Your Reference From Hong Kong’s World Conductor Lio Kuokman (廖國敏)
Hong Kong’s ‘homegrown’ world-class orchestra conductor Lio Kuokman is young and energetic. He speaks like a lawyer, in fact faster, sharper and more precise than lawyers.
In 2017, he finished his tenure as Assistant Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, founded in 1900 and one of the ‘Big Five’ American orchestras. Now, he has a London manager to look after his ‘guest conducting’ engagements worldwide for him. Kuokman wants to prove and position himself. The numerous challenges for him to raise in the international music scene is a rigorous test that he has been put through. Kuokman smiled, “I finished the test but if I plan to move up, I will face more challenges. Now, I am constantly on the road and traveling almost 300 days on average per year.”
I asked, “Do you enjoy work and travel around the world?” Kuokman said, “I must say I get used to it. To be an international artist, you have to travel around the world to share your music, and I have many home bases, Macau, Hong Kong and Paris. My 4th home is hotel. My weekly routine is like this: after my concert on Friday and Saturday in a city, I run back to the hotel and pack my suitcase so that on Sunday morning, I can rush to the airport to catch a plane to my next performing destination. On weekdays, I sleep in a hotel, go to work, rehearse with the orchestra and get ready for the coming concert on Saturday. On Sunday, I become a bird again!”
I deplored, “What a dreadful life!” Kuokman disagreed, “It is tough but again, as soon as I accustom myself to changes, change of climate, change of city, change of people, change of orchestra, change of venue, change of audience, change of hotel and change of food, I will be fine! Don’t forget I have made friends all over the world, from Russia, Poland, Shanghai to Taipei. The only bad thing is that I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and forget which hotel I am staying at. My 5th home should be my suitcase which contains outfits, formal and casual, for four seasons. My opened suitcase will reveal who I am as I put all my favourite goodies like personal care stuff, snacks and laptop into it.” I replied, “Lord, the secret of a happy old age for me is simply an honourable pact with a lazy and easy life.”
“All artists want to be international but how?” I did not understand. Kuokman sincerely pointed out, “Keep on moving and working hard. Do swim from a smaller pond to a bigger one and keep on mounting the stairs. Don’t be happy with being a big fish in a little pond because once you move to the world arena, you may be just another unknown musician. I was born in Macau and learnt music at the age of 5. My ambition was to be a great orchestra conductor. So, I had to go to Hong Kong for better music education. After leaving The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2003, I knew that I have to continue my studies overseas. By the provision of a scholarship, I went to The Juilliard School in New York to get a master’s degree. In 2005, I fought hard and was admitted to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia which was one of the best music conservatories in the world. It was extremely selective and the admission rate was usually lower than 5%.” I asked, “Looking back, how would you feel?” Kuokman laughed, “The music fight in my destiny was fixed. I did one thing right and that was I signed up for this fight. I hit harder and forced myself to be stronger. I still remember I practised piano alone till 3 a.m. almost on a daily basis when I studied in Hong Kong.”
I said, “Kuokman, you are talented, determined, diligent and having been chasing the leading edge of the music wave. Are you afraid of failure?” He was lost in thought for a while, “Failure is an essential part of life. It is not fatal. If I fail, I use the downtime to unwind and equip myself better. Before I became the Assistant Conductor of the world-class Philadelphia Orchestra, I had my wrestling years from 2009 to 2014: no permanent job, no stable income, living in a small partitioned room in Boston, interviews not going well and feeling anxious about the future. When I could later change my fate, I sighed with relief that it was all over. Right now, because of COVID-19, I am being locked up in Hong Kong but I try to make the best out of the worst. I enjoy how to wakesurf in Sai Kung, reading books in Eslite Bookstore in Tsim Sha Tsui and training as an apprentice barista in my friend’s cafe near Central. For an artist, whether international or local, pushing harder than yesterday is the answer to life.”
I said, “What made you an international conductor?” Kuokman was shy, “Apart from luck, I believe that a great conductor, by twirling his baton high in the air as he starts to lead the musicians, must have the ability to create inspiration and imagination with the orchestra and audience. I also need to understand and know my musicians in order to create the best result. Conducting is fascinating but the job can be stressful: at this moment, you have to perform well but you have to know also what you did not do well in the previous moment and to plan how you want to fix it in the next moment!”
My last question for Kuokman, “What is your wish for the orchestral music scene of Hong Kong and Macau?” He pondered, “Better venues. Our concert places have become old and cannot catch up with the standard of the times.”
Talking to Lio Kuokman is a wonderful experience, like talking to myself of another existence. I am a lawyer and writer. He is a musician and commander. We have 2 things in common: high rationality and emotional sensitivity. I remember what was said, “Being a conductor is kind of a hybrid profession because it is being someone who is a coach, a trainer, an editor and a director.” Kuokman, you are Hong Kong’s idol!

The Photographer Mixed Media in Three Parts by Philip Glass and Rob Malasch
Tumblr media
@Piero Chiussi
The focus of t h i s production is English photographer Eadweard Muybridge(1830-1904). His passion for photography led to advances in motion studies. That passion spilled over into real life, when, in 1874, he murdered his wife's lover, but was acquitted. The original production premiered in the Netherlands in 1982, during which drama, music,  images and dance were introduced in succession over three acts. Through drama and dance the story of Muybridge's crime and subsequent acquittal was told, accompanied by slides of his works and music composed by Philip Glass. Rob Malasch was later called on to rewrite the script. Ensemble KNM Berlin reworked The Photographer, premiering its version at the Museum for Photography Berlin in 2014. Choreographer SUN Shang-chi was invited to create an integrated play and dance piece. In real-time processed films of Muybridge's motion studies replace the static slides, while the music of Philip Glass remains a feature.

@Piero Chiussi
Philip Glass/ Composer Philip Glass is considered one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century. In the early 1960s, he studied with the legendary Nadia Boulanger and worked closely with the sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar. In 1967, he formed the Philip Glass Ensemble in New York. He still performs on keyboards as part of this ensemble. By 1974, Glass had completed a number of innovative projects, amassing a large collection of new music for his Ensemble and the Mabou Mines Theater Company. This period culminated in Music in Twelve Parts , and the landmark opera, Einstein on the Beach , for which he collaborated with Robert Wilson. Since Einstein, Glass has expanded his repertoire to include music for opera, dance, theater, chamber ensemble, orchestra, and film. His scores have received Academy Award nominations (Kundun, The Hours, Notes on a Scandal ) and a Golden Globe (The Truman Show). In 2015, he received the National Medal of Arts.
SUN Shang-chi / Direction & Choreography Taiwan born dancer and choreographer SUN Shang-chi was educated in ballet and contemporary dance at the National Academy of the Arts (now National Taiwan University of the Arts) in Taipei and earned a Master of Arts degree in Choreography from Ernst Busch University (Berlin). Since the founding of his company in 2007, he has created a diversity of works such as Walk Faster (2007), Dialogue II (2008), Nüwa (2009), 4.48/Ohne Titel (2010), Je.Sans.Paroles (2011) and Traverse (2011) which have been presented all over Europe and Asia (Maison de la Danse – Lyon, Festival Tanz im August – Berlin, Festival d'Avignon, and Taipei Arts Festival). Over the past few years, he has collaborated with a number of companies on commissioned works, including Sasha Waltz & Guests, Cloud Gate 2, Transitions Company London and Dance Company of City Theatre Osnabrück.
Ensemble KNM Berlin / Performer & Producer Ensemble KNM Berlin represents the active, current music scene of the metropolis of Berlin. Along with other students from the Hanns Eisler School of Music in the former East Berlin, Juliane Klein and Thomas Bruns founded this ensemble in 1988. It is now made up of ten musicians from all over Germany, Great Britain, Hungary and Switzerland. In close collaboration with international composers, authors, conductors, artists and producers, KNM has presented compositions, concert installations and projects worldwide. Its innovative programs result from a fascination with the unknown and constant discussions on the most essential topics of our time. This ensemble has performed more than 1,000 concerts since its creation.

Bad signals. Disconnected memories. Pixelated images form into nightmares and lead us to explore the dark side of our unconscious. An invitation to bifurcations inside the unknown.
Why not take an alternative sightseeing tour to find the border of the end of Knowingness and transform that path into an irreplaceable sensory experience?
Rays of light illuminate distinct complementary perspectives along a spatial Bokeh. Transparency brings lives together like seasonal souvenirs, waiting to be brought to intimacy.

Drawing from personal experience and observations, Lin uses sculpture integrated with photography, video, and performance to portray the ongoing negotiation between our latent desires and the manipulated realities in which we find ourselves. Hybrid cultures, shifting identities, and the relationships between our physicality and psychology are subjects Lin has investigated since 2004. Her recent projects explore humanity’s experience of displacement, self-consciousness and loss and how memories change with modified experience and new events.
Jia-Jen Lin is a Taiwanese artist based in New York. Lin attended National Taiwan Normal University for a BFA in Western Painting and received her MFA in sculpture, installation, and multimedia from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has participated in artist residencies at International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York; L’Estruch, Spain; Water Mill Center, New York; Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Nebraska; and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. Scott Sinclair
http://www.halftheory.com/
Scott Sinclair is an audiovisual artist working in sound, video, performance, and installation. Using a highly interdisciplinary approach, Scott creates brutalist and humorous collages of audiovisual media incorporating elements such as computer music, cracked video art, found objects, custom-made costumes, and improvised performance. His work is often concerned with the over-stimulation of these elements to bring about states of intensified noise delirium.
As a performer, Scott is known for his highly energetic and unpredictable performances which are often equal parts brutal avant-garde and equal parts low-brow trash. His concerts have found audiences on many tours in Europe, Australia, Japan, Russia, and North America. Scott currently performs in the audiovisual groups Botborg and The Superusers, and his solo noise-karaoke project Company Fuck.
He lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

STGCC over the years (File Photos: Speedknight.com )
STGCC is marking its 10th Anniversary milestone this year! Here is what to expect for the event that is happening this weekend at the Sands Expo & Convention Center! More zones, More fun!
Good Game Experience (GGXP)
Mountain Dew Cup, STGCC 2016 (File photo: Speedknight.com )
Win or lose, let’s all say “GG!” and keep on striving to improve our game (and of course, crush our opponents in the next clash). The Good Game Experience (GGXP) is the “G” of STGCC – serving as home base to our gaming fans. This year, we’re dedicating an entire hall for the gaming scene at STGCC and things are just about to get savage! There’ll be tears, sweat, roars of “Nice lah!” and of course, plenty of salt and kappa. Expect some high octane tournaments with awesome prizes coming your way soon! It’s not all about electronics though as our friends from Coliseum will also be present with exciting tabletop games such as Pokemon Trading Card Game, Yu- Gi-Oh! and Final Fantasy Trading Card Game. Not so much into hardcore gaming? Why don’t you relax a bit at our Chillax Zone, where beanbags and consoles will be set out for you and your buddies to knock out a grudge match or two. What’s more, support our indie developers in Singapore and around the region. They can be found at GGXP showcasing their work so do drop by and give their offerings a spin. All indie studios participating in GGXP will also be eligible for our Good Game Awards (GGA). Determined by a panel of judges, consisting of veterans and important figures in the gaming scene, we’ll be giving out Best in Show and Best Runner Up award in appreciation for their hard work.

Her trademark character is “Ebineko” - a half cat and half shrimp character that seems to have gotten himself into some tempura batter. “Ebineko” was released as a soft vinyl toy earlier this year - Yasu sculpted the figure herself and painstakingly hand-paints every release. Her figure line-up has recently expanded featuring several new soft vinyl figures; “Same” - the three eyed shark, “Yamorin” - the Gekko Dragon plus a cute mini version of “Ebineko “are all on the way. She exhibited at the Taipei Toy Festival last year and did a live painting performance. She will be having a show in Shanghai in October with fellow artists Teresa Chiba, Hikari Bambi and Hinatique. Her designer toys are inspired by Japanese folk art. “KIBUNADON” was her first design toy - fish Kaiju toy - which was released from Maxtoy company (USA) in 2014. SIMONE LEGNO
Simone Legno is the Co-founder and Creative Director of tokidoki. Born in Rome, Italy, Legno, drew incessantly as a child. The boxes of chewed, broken and unsharpened pencils he adored as a kid were the beginnings of a passion for art that led to the eventual creation of tokidoki. tokidoki started as Legno’s professional online portfolio and artistic diary while living in Italy, where he showcased his illustrations, advertising and new media designs for various clients. A partial list of these clients includes Volkswagen, MTV, John Galliano, Champion, Toyota, Renault, Daihatsu, BenQ, Microsoft, Narcotic Bureau of Singapore, Telecom Italia, and TIM. tokidoki means “sometimes” in Japanese. Legno, who has always had a deep love of Japan and fascination with world cultures, chose the word because he feels “everyone waits for moments that change one’s destiny, by chance or by meeting a new person”. Simone's special moment arrived when his designs drew the attention of entrepreneurs Pooneh Mohajer and Ivan Arnold, who spied the art on his personal website and convinced him to move to L.A. to build a brand. Since officially launching in 2005, tokidoki has grown into an internationally recognized pop- culture lifestyle brand and has amassed a cult-like following for its larger-than-life characters, megawatt partnerships and extensive range of products from apparel and handbags to home décor and even slot machines. tokidoki has collaborated with many brands such as Karl Lagerfeld, Guggenheim Museum, Sephora, LeSportsac, Onitsuka Tiger, Marvel, New Era, Hello Kitty, Fujitsu, Levi's, Smashbox cosmetics, Xbox, T-mobile, Medicom Toy, Major League Baseball, Skullcandy, Barbie, Canon, Black Eyed Peas, and more. As the creator of tokidoki, Simone has become a sought-after speaker around the world at museums, universities and conferences, from MOCA (the Geffen Museum-Los Angeles) to the Adobe MAX conference, UCLA, USC, the Flash Film Festival in San Francisco, Art Center College of Design, Apple store in Osaka, Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome, Singapore Toy and Comic Convention, Grafika Manila and many others.
Mark Nagata
Mark Nagata, founder of San Francisco-based Max Toy company, introduced Singapore to the likes of Eyezon, Dualos, Argus and the perenial favourite, Negora in 2012. Mark Nagata will be back for another round of kaiju invasion this year and he has an spectacular lineup, including a very special STGCC 10th anniversary exclusive, that will satisfy your vinyl cravings. What exactly will he be unleashing from his ever-expanding monster family? Let's just say only the cat is out of the bag. If your only experience with Kaiju is a selfie with Godzilla in Shinjuku, drop by the booth and have a chat with the unofficial Kaiju Ambassador!

Arthur Adams
Soruces: http://ift.tt/2wJiBrX
Arthur Adams, a self-taught artist, became a fan favorite when, at the age of 19, he left his job making pizzas for the masses to pencil the critically-acclaimed Longshot limited series, written by Ann Nocenti and published in 1985 by Marvel Comics. He has been in high demand as an artist since. Adams' highly distinctive and detailed artwork gained him considerable popularity amongst fans and editors, if not his inkers, and he's enjoyed being a cover artist, and the artist and sometime writer for miniseries, specials, and annuals. These days, in order to spare inkers the pain, his work is largely shot directly from pencils or inked by himself, with some exceptions. In his career, Arthur has worked on many titles, Batman, Superman, Spiderman, X men, Godzilla, Vampirella, Rocketeer, the Authority, Danger Girl, Excalibur, and the Hulk, to name a few. He also launched his creator owned, written, and drawn series Monkeyman and O'Brian in 1993 with Dark Horse Comics "Legend" imprint. He also had a ten-issue run on an anthology series featuring the character Jonnie Future. The eight page Jonnie Future stories appeared in Tom Strong's Terrific Tales (2002–2004). More recently, Arthur has been working on Ultimate X for Marvel Comics with writer Jeph Loeb, and issue one launched in 2010. Adams has provided cover images for issues of the Justice League of America, Appleseed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Green Lantern, Hulk, Avengers, X Men, Red Sonja, Superman, Batman, and Vampirella, among other titles. In addition to his work in comic books, he has also produced popular commercial art, such as numerous illustrations for trading cards, posters, shirts, and various other comics-related merchandise. Outside the field of comics, he has also provided illustrations for various magazines, movies, video games, and worked in toy design, packaging art, and even a series of X-Men-themed Campbell Soup cans. Arthur lives in Northern California in the woods somewhere, like his hero, Bigfoot. When told he should have a "Web" site he went outside and tried to spin his own web. It was funny and sad all at once. We got him back inside and gave him his medicine.
