okay so @minuanos (why tag no work) tagged me to share the opening lines of my last 20 fics but i have absolutely not written 20 fics so you’re just getting all of them, ever, which is... 12 including my shakespeare WIP. these are the opening paragraphs but most of them are just one sentence anyway
this is also a callout post for myself as you can see how i never fucking finish anything
IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER so you can see how i have regressed
a crack in the heart of a prince (hamlet, written 2012, finished): “Osrick, having brought the challenge, departed, and Horatio turned to Hamlet.”
kerouac fairies (maggie stiefvater’s books of faerie, written 2013/15, unfinished): “James Morgan is adamant that this is not a road trip.”
heroics and haggis (tales from the shadowhunter academy, written 2015, unfinished): “You’re right,” said Simon. “I do have plenty of best friends.”
getting the dee (ulster cycle, written 2019, unfinished): “Conall: hey dee you alive”
valentáin’s day (ulster cycle, written 2020, oneshot): “It wasn’t the first time Fergus had bailed on them, but it was one of his less plausible excuses.”
flight risk (ulster cycle, written 2020, oneshot): “Of course, it’s all an unfortunate misunderstanding. Láeg has already tried, earnestly, to convince them of this, but they don’t seem to see it the same way, which is how he’s found himself here, restraint cuffs around his wrists like they think he’s some kind of no-good scavenger. Which he isn’t. He isn’t even a thief, although that’s what they’re accusing him of, although, okay, technically the ship isn’t his.”
patron saint of toasties (finn cycle, written 2020, oneshot): “He knows it’s a trap.”
of grief and glory (ulster cycle, written 2020, oneshot): “They don’t talk about the aftermath.”
a marriage of inconvenience (ulster cycle, written 2020, oneshot): “Emer moves her bishop with a single decisive movement. ‘Checkmate.’”
glorious as the sunrise (ulster cycle, written 2020, oneshot): “They were still children when it started, or maybe teens, newly aware of the giddy, gleeful glory of riding to a fight at each other’s sides and letting blood bind them ever closer together. Inseparable, the Ulaid called them, and—troublemakers the both of them, when they thought they weren’t listening, or bound to break their mothers' hearts, which everybody had known from the start.”
in loco parentis (ulster cycle, started 2018, unfinished but in progress i promise): “When they told Láeg his new flatmate would be a fresher, his first instinct was resignation.”
and finally
untitled shakespeare sadfic/recovery fic (hamlet + other shakespeare, started like two days ago, not yet finished or posted): “When it’s all over – if you can call it over when the nightmares still wake him nightly and show no signs of stopping – he goes back to university. Not Wittenberg. There are too many ghosts there, and too many questions.”
anyway i am tagging @cicelythereaper, @reynier and anybody who has been waiting for somebody to tag them but hasn’t been tagged yet!

Hi, I recently got into Don Carlo and I just wanted to ask if you could maybe recommend me some good fanfics (the sadder the better)? Since you seem to be well oriented in that area :D
:D Hi! (I, uh, recently got into Don Carlo too and got completely overwhelmed by it.) To be honest, there isn’t much fanfic for Don Carlo, at least on AO3  (I have no idea whether there is fanfic of it elsewhere). But! I would love to rec my favorites! :D Except I will warn you that my favorites are not super sad (except in context). Hmm, the fic as a whole, now that I’m looking at it, doesn’t tend to skew super sad. Maybe there needs to be more sadfic written? :)
My absolute favorite fic in the fandom is PlinytheYounger’s “The Virgin Soil of the Spirit”:  a younger Carlo has to be saved by Posa (sound familiar?) - one-sided Carlos/Rodrigo - the fic itself is not particularly sad, but it is bittersweet, especially when one knows what happens in canon. Lots of great early-Christianity humor if you like that sort of thing (I do very much, which is part of why it’s my favorite). Very well written.
My second favorite is “Provision for the Flesh” (acaramelmacchiato): from the summary: “Carlos has loved Rodrigo his whole life and no one in this story finds it creepy except him.” One-sided Carlos/Rodrigo, obviously. Pre-canon (up to canon start). Again not overtly sad, but bittersweet.
Since I have written, um, a fifth of the fic in the fandom as of today, I will go ahead and rec my own favorite (and probably most overtly sad too) of my fics: “His noble words revealed to my soul a new world” : a partial fix-it where Rodrigo manages to fix some things after his death by (what else) sending a letter. Gen. Sad, but not quite as sad as canon? Iberiandoctor remixed it : her remix is Philip/Rodrigo and rather sadder (although Philip deserves it).
If you’re looking primarily for sad, the saddest fic in the fandom is probably widevibratobitch’s “Dio che nell'alma infondere amor volesti…” which is a retelling of Rodrigo’s death scene, so, yeah, sad. Carlo/Rodrigo.
(Also, I am about to write a tumblr post on the two Don Carlo fics I just wrote, which may also be of interest to you, one of which is very short but worse than canon, the other of which is blatantly everyone-lives fix-it so maybe less interesting to you, although there is certainly enough angst along the way.) Thanks for the ask!

Liveblog cont., part 6
My rant about Padme in the last section still stands, but “So this is how liberty dies: with thunderous applause” is frankly EXCELLENT.  Gimme more of this Padme, Lucas: a Padme who loves democracy, who has lived and breathed it since she was a teenager, who genuinely wants to serve and better the Republic.  Who sees it falling apart around her, torn by war.  Who wants to save it, but doesn’t know how.  In the end, all she can do is witness its passing, and mourn.
(Padme/Democracy OTP)
I’ll admit I don’t see much shippy about Anakin and Obi-Wan in this movie (primarily b/c of the “I trained you from a small boy” line) but Obi-Wan in this scene does sell it somewhat.  He can’t stand the idea of fighting Anakin.  Would rather die against Sidious than raise a blade against his old Padawan.  “but I don’t know where to find him,” he says, desperate to Not Know.  But, in the end, he’s a Jedi.  He knows his duty.  Even when it breaks his heart.
(Obi-Wan/Duty OTP.  In a terrible angsty sadfic way.)
(eeeveryone knows Padme and Anakin are fucking.  everyone does.)
(no don’t cry Obi-Wan, don’t make that terrible voice-breaking sound, noooo)
and just.  “Anakin is the father” he says like he doesn’t fucking know.  “I’m so sorry,” and he probably is genuinely sorry but he’s too fucking emotionally overwhelmed to mean it; there’s no emotion in his voice.  he knows the words are correct, cares enough about padme to know this is killing her the way it’s killing him, but he can’t care about anything that isn’t that sithdamned hologram - anakin couldn’t anakin wouldn’t but he did.  he did.  and now obi-wan has to kill the man he loves and it’s going to kill him too.
Padme doesn’t dress up to go to Mustafar.  She braids her hair and puts on sensible clothing and she looks so young.  I know she’s not that young - there’s a five-year gap between her and Anakin, and he’s an adult here - but.  she looks like a fucking teenager.  god, they’re all so young and their world is collapsing in fire and just.  fuck.
