Shanzell currently teaches Tap throughout the Flint Community on behalf of the Outreach development for Youthquest through Tapology. She also teaches Advanced Lyrical (Competition Team and Tap) at Linden Dance Academy, and All levels, (including Adult Tap) at Motor City Dance Factory. She encompasses a strong effort to make a positive impact on the advancement of youth.
Her repertoire includes both award winning, and top-ranked competitive choreography, including teaching and performing freelance throughout the U.S. Shanzell recently choreographed socially centered work in her hometown on The Flint Youth Theatre, “The Most Blank City in America”. She choreographs annually with “Mott, Motown, & More” for the benefit of The Mott Foundation, which assists students in their academic pursuits. Over the past 4 years, she served as performing artist, teacher, and Outreach Coordinator at the Tapology Summer Intensive and Festival. Shanzell serves as a youth advocate and dance therapist for the Ennis Center for Children and Boys & Girls Club of America, and actively teaches through several in-school and after school programs including; Potter Elementary, Burton Glen Charter Academy, Linden Charter Academy, Brownell & Holmes STEM Academy to briefly mention. She recently performed at The Shakespeare Theatre - Sidney Harman Hall in Washington D.C., (Velocity Dance Festival), The Allied Media Conference, Dally in the Alley, and SideWalk Detroit (Destination Forever, Brinae Ali), to briefly mention.
Shanzell trained with the off-broadway musical STOMP at the Orpheum Theatre in New York, while also working at The School at Steps. She has also filmed several commercials and printwork in Detroit-metro area, and Miami, FL. She studied classical piano with Brigitte Tyler for 13 years, and under Dr. Martin Camacho-Zavaleta, and Dr. Alan Mason. Shanzell continues to train at Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway, Peridance, and with Alfred Bruce Bradley of Tapology.
She has trained with Susie Garcia and the Miami Heat Dancers. She performed under residency with Summerdance directed by Alexandria Jennings (Flint Institute of Music). Shanzell performed preliminary at The Milwaukee Theatre on “So You Think You Can Dance” Cycle 4 aired on FOX network. She competed nationally at NCA with the University at Buffalo Cheer Team. Also studying under Tom Ralabate, Tressa Gorman-Crehan, and the Ronald K. Brown Evidence company.
She trained extensively with the Urban Bush Women during their Residency at UM-Flint. As well as the Joffrey Ballet Workshop. She studied vocally with Dr. Beverly Coulter and Dr. Gisele Rios, coached Varsity Cheer at Miami Country Day School and Barry University for two years. She has performed and choreographed with countless organizations, universities and Operas throughout South Florida.
Shanzell was showcased with the Flintstone Hoofers at The Town Hall Tap Extravaganza in NYC featuring artists Savion Glover, Busta Brown, Leonard Reed, and Jimmy Slyde. She also received the Regional Dancer of the Year Scholarship from Tremaine Dance Conventions & Competitions.
Shanzell is eternally grateful for the mentoring and guidance given to her by numerous directors, schools, studios, programs, and festivals throughout her development. In addition to her vast travels, television, and commercial appearances, Shanzell continues to push boundaries and find ways to spread the healing art of music and dance throughout the community.
A movement artist, and Flint, Michigan native. She is an Alumni of Barry University and The University at Buffalo (SUNY). Shanzell has trained extensively in Tap, while also studying Modern (Limon, Horton, Graham, and Dunham), classical ballet, jazz, and later branching out into Hip Hop.
