F1: McLaren calls for rule changes to improve sustainability

McLaren are fifth in the F1 constructors' standing McLaren has called for changes to Formula 1's rules to make it easier for teams to pursue sustainability. McLaren Racing boss Zak Brown says F1's budget cap forces teams into pitching sustainability against competitiveness. He added any changes would need to be planned to ensure they did not create loopholes that allowed extra spending. "There needs to be a way to define areas you can spend outside the cap so we can work towards making F1 more sustainable," Brown said. F1 as a sport has made sustainability a central part of its future planning and has pledged to be net-zero carbon by 2030. But the target presents major challenges for an activity that uses internal combustion engines and where the cars are largely made of carbon-fibre, which is notoriously wasteful to produce and difficult to recycle. F1's budget cap, which is set this year at $135m [£108.5m], is one of a number of mechanisms introduced into the rulebook in recent years in an attempt to close up the field and make the racing more competitive. F1 is already planning to use carbon-neutral, fully sustainable synthetic fuel in new engines that will be mandated for 2026. But Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, said F1 could go further by creating "a clear regulatory framework with financial, technical and sporting regulations that better enable us all to innovate and invest in sustainability". He added: "Sustainability has been on the radar for some time. Now everyone is getting rightfully stuck into it, there are areas we think we can invest in sustainability technologies that may not bring a short-term performance benefit that are not really addressed in the financial regulations. "So what we'd like to see is some adaptation of the financial regulations that allows you to clearly invest in sustainability, whereas (currently) if teams have the opportunity to invest in immediate performance benefit (in areas that) aren't sustainable, there will be teams that make those investments." Brown said one of McLaren's "moonshot" ambitions was to develop "a full circular race car". This is a car design in which a team would focus on minimising resources consumed, including using recycled materials, finding ways to expand their usage lifespan, and disposing of them correctly at end of life. Brown said: "A lot of work would need to go into understanding: 'Is that achievable?' At the same time, you could make similar types of investments without having sustainability in mind to further develop your race car." McLaren director of sustainability Kim Wilson added that she believed the approach could be extended to the formulation of the 2026 technical regulations, on which discussions have already started. "The technical regulations are an opportunity to create a level playing field for teams so that the regulations are driving us all to the same outcomes," Wilson said. "So, for example, it might be a certain proportion of the car needs to be made of sustainable materials without jeopardising the level of creativity for winning the constructors' champions. I have not managed to install vanilla Arch yet, but I’m sure it would take longer. I’ve installed FreeBSD and it took a little over an hour to go from text installer to a GUI. I would like to note that some BSDs are fairly easy to install. You have to install TrueOS, even if you only want to test it. Interestingly, you don’t have the option to boot into a live environment.

The Delahaye’s 135, introduced in Paris in 1935, was a rare model that straddled both the pre-war and post-war era. It boasted a brand-new chassis with the same 3.6-liter, six-cylinder engine first seen in the earlier Type 138, and it proved to be a remarkable automobile upon its release. One year later, Delahaye introduced the 135M, which offered a slightly larger engine with improved horsepower and was offered with a choice of single, dual, or triple carburetors. The 135 proved to more than hold its own in competition, as it swept the top six places at Marseilles in 1936. In the following years, leading up to the beginning of the Second World War, the 135 further cemented its reputation, taking 2nd overall at Le Mans in 1937 and 1st, 2nd, and 4th the following year. Outside of Le Mans, Delahaye 135s also took 1st at the Rallye Monte Carlo in 1937 and 1939.

Following the conclusion of the war, production of the Type 135 resumed and continued with the same 3.6-liter engine used before the war. By this time, the company was nearing its end, as the French government had placed large taxes on cars with displacement over three liters. Even today, six decades after the final Delahaye was produced, the famous 135-series cars remain very highly regarded as some of the most compelling French automobiles ever produced.

Elligo Health Research, a clinical research and technology company, has raised $135 million in a new funding round led by Morgan Stanley Expansion Capital and Ally Bridge Group.

Existing investors, including Cerner, Norwest Venture Partners, Hatteras Venture Partners and Syneos Health, also participated in the Series E financing round.

Founded in 2016, Austin, Texas-based Elligo Health Research aims to expand patient access to clinical trials. It uses EHR data, technology and services to support all types of clinical trial designs — traditional, hybrid and direct-to-patient. The organization has access to the data of 150 million diverse patients.

“The clinical trials industry is experiencing a new phase of disruption,” said Melissa Daniels, managing director and general partner at Morgan Stanley Expansion Capital, in a news release. “There’s an opportunity to use technology, data analytics, and services to eliminate long-standing trial conduct pitfalls and bottlenecks that primarily impact patients.”

Daniels has joined Elligo’s board.

The company will use the new funds to purchase ClinEdge, a research practice management and clinical services organization. ClinEdge delivers site conduct and patient access solutions for clinical research sites, pharma companies and clinical research organizations.

In addition to the acquisition, Elligo will further invest in its technology platform and develop new ways to use data to enhance how clinical trials are run.

“This commitment from Morgan Stanley Expansion Capital, Ally Bridge Group, and others will not only help us better serve our existing clients, but also empower us to expand our technology and services on a global scale,” said John Potthoff, CEO of Elligo Health Research, in a news release. “The net effect of that will be increased access to clinical trials as a care option for large numbers of patients. We will accelerate revolutionizing the way clinical trials are conducted from pre-identification of patients through healthcare to study enrollment, conduct, and study data delivery.”

Among Elligo’s existing investors is EHR giant Cerner, which has an established relationship with the company.

Last December, Cerner invested an undisclosed sum in Elligo Health Research. As part of the investment, Cerner also announced plans to enter into a commercial agreement with Elligo to offer additional clinical trial resources to providers in the Cerner Learning Health Network.
