Has Swan Lake ever been played by two different ballerinas for Odile and Odette? Sometimes I wish this could be possible. Like, imagine Skorik as Odette and Tereshkina as Odile?! That would be epic!
This has absolutely happened in different situations throughout history. In fact, it is believed that the ballet originally called for two different dancers. While we know that Polina Karpakova was the 'original' Odette in the 1877 Moscow production, it is not known for sure if she also danced Odile.
I read in an old book about Margot Fonteyn only dancing Odette early in her career. Her Odile was often Ruth French, a soloist with Dighaliev's company and a great technician for Act III. I believe ENB (then the London Festival Ballet) also did this to great effect with Trinidad Sevillano and Susan Hogard in the late 80s. More recently, Ballet West cast two different dancers on their tour to UK in 2018. Odette was played by Natasha Watson and Odile by Uyu Hiromoto. Bizzare things happen on tour, Barynshikov put Jolinda Menendez in as Odette and Yoko Ochino as Odile in the 80s as well.
Of course, there have been several last-minute scenarios as well. Misty Copeland's Swan Lake is a particularly infamous, drama-filled example. Misty danced acts 2 and 4, and Sarah Lane stepped in with only a few hours notice to dance act 3. The reasons why are vastly speculative. I also saw mentions of a 2008 performance where Irina Dvorovenko stepped in for Odette in a performance where Julie Kent was supposed to dance both roles.
