23 Jul 2021
Architects: AAI – Monster LAB
Location: Chengdu, China
Tianfu Exhibition Hall, Chengdu City
Definition: Tianfu “Stage” Monster Lab, the new creative studio of AAI International Architecture, won a national design competition for the Chengdu Merchants Urban Planning Exhibition Hall in the New District of Tianfu. As the first exhibition hall and demonstrative project to be built in Tianfu, the project will bear witness to the new area’s progression from empty fields to an economically prosperous urban district, characterized by new skyscrapers and a culturally diverse populace.
Through “refining traditional achievements and expressing future excellence”, we hope that this building, with its mission of showcasing the district’s timeline, will be compatible with Chengdu’s cultural past and speak to the future possibilities of urban development here.
The concept of “stage” came from the fact that in today’s China, new cities are springing up everywhere, with each one advertised as being at the forefront of urban planning concepts. But where is the root of these new cities? We decided to find the answer in the ancient city.
The framework of the building was born out of the theatre, a common public building type in old Chengdu. Typically in these theatres, in the middle of the laneway, under its eaves, the stage space and the overhead space overlap with each other. This forms a dual interaction with the city and spectators: performance and participation (the “stage space” acts as the container of the performance, while the “overhead space” ensures the road below is easily accessible).
We have abstractly interpreted these elements and incorporated a contemporary visual language to renew this spatial structure. In response to the needs of the client, the building has been equally divided into three volumes to exhibit future planning, future business, and future life, respectively. At the intersection of the three volumes, we have designed a shared space called the “Tianfu Stage”. It draws people in and through to overlook a magnificent view of the new city, in accordance with the structural logic of the “stage space” and “overhead space”.
At the same time, people watching the scenery from the “stage” also become “dancers”, being potentially seen from the landscape outside the building. A public observatory has been placed overtop the “stage”, allowing visitors to see higher and farther from the commanding heights of the building.
Site Response: Frame “A city is an ‘ecosystem’ in which the buildings are the animals or plants inhabiting it.” In Monster Lab’s design philosophy, architecture should have vitality, take root like a tree, and absorb the “sunlight, air, and nutrients” of the place, in order to give growth to a unique appearance. This is exactly the approach taken for the design of the Tianfu Stage.
As the project is located east of the CBD (Central Business District) within a green landscape corridor, the site provides an excellent view of the complex cityscape of towers to its west. Taking the pre-existing landscape into account, our design process first assesses existing sightlines, and then rotates and folds each functional volume, in order to arrive at the ideal relationship between people in and around the building, and the scenery surrounding it. Architecture is about defining viewing opportunities and behavior, just as painting is about frames – constraining a boundary and drawing attention to the most essential content. The scenery of the new city is fluid. In “framing” it, we hope to preview its future form, echo and interact with it, and grow together.
We closely follow the planned form of the urban skyline to constrain the height and overall dimensions of the three building volumes. Within the frame of the “stage”, we may witness both the city and the skyline gradually developing into a comprehensive whole, in which the “stage” will be an active part. This is a building derived from and rooted in its place: its design logic is adapted to align with the presence of the surrounding scenery, and the presence of people.
The building also prioritizes visitors’ field of vision in regards to its facade treatment: the areas with better east and west views are clad with large glass curtain walls, while the north and south walls are solid. While the virtual and real coexist, the design suggests a temporary abandonment of redundant interference, allowing the “real” to take priority and letting one’s attention/ line of sight to be focused again.
Chengdu is a city where recreation and enjoying the pleasures of life are commonplace, and its unique climate makes its outdoor spaces particularly well suited for leisurely activities. In the “Tianfu Stage”, we designed an outdoor cinema based on the south-facing solid wall and the landscape space adjacent to it – providing visitors and viewers with multiple participation possibilities, injecting new energy and potential into the architecture and the future development of Chengdu.
Vision: Pull back the “Curtain” Where there is a stage, there will also be a curtain. It represents a pivotal state of “beginning”: the curtain has not yet risen, the lights are dim, and there is no sound; when the curtain goes up, everything that unfolds onstage draws people into a vivid experience, seemingly real and completely immersive. “Tianfu Stage” is based on a new origin of the city, so naturally it follows it also has a “curtain”.
On either side of the “stage”, folded glass façades act as its “curtain”. Their folding forms echo the face-changing folding fan of Chengdu’s characteristic Sichuan Opera. The unique shifting angles of the façades breaks up the scenery reflected on the glass, producing a dramatic kaleidoscope-like effect, allowing the space to “change face” and create surprising patterns for visitors walking past.
In addition, the inwardly inclined cantilevered glass façade forms an ecological self-shading system. There is no need for curtains on the interior, giving people within a free, unencumbered view of the scenery around the building all year round – furthering our intent to have the design take its place within the ecological concept of the park city.
Today, the “Tianfu Stage” has been returned to the city, the public, and time. It will serve as an important public space in the area, acting as a real “stage”- waiting to be filled with interior design, and rejuvenated by human activity and society. Urban life and collective memory are reshaped by the project, given different faces by the growth of the city and landscape… The design completes the space here, with all of its aspects realized to ensure long lasting value to the city and its populace.

About AAI – Monster Lab The city is conceived in the language of architecture, one cannot speak of architecture without the city We believe that the city is an enormous ecosystem, like those in nature, and architecture an “organism” that is bred and grown in this specific ecological environment The differences in various environments create the uniqueness of each building For people, the scale of a building is immense, similar to a massive creature in a monster film, its “belly” filled with various characters We must thoroughly research for each “monster”, to find their best way to dwell in the city Let the city accept it, so that people like it This is our understanding of architecture and cities This is why our team is called Monster Lab, and why we created the Monster Research Institute

The concept and formation of family stainless steel cabinet are a little later than wooden cabinet. It was formed in the late 1990s, and it is popular in a certain range. Stainless steel also has good or bad points, on the cabinet commonly used 304202, 201, I'm a stainless steel raw material. I personally suggest you buy 304, because 201 and 202 will rust after a long time. Now many illegal businesses say that their raw materials are 304 stainless steel. The simplest way to identify them is to buy Stainless Steel identification potion. If 304 drops on, it will not change color. 201 and 202 will be light red. 201 is more red than 202. In short, the color change is more obvious Is the stainless steel cabinet suitable for household use Stainless steel cabinet, simply speaking, is the cabinet made of stainless steel. Welding Cable 2 AWG Compared To DLO Cable 2 AWG
DLO and welding cable are both types of single conductor power cables with differences that approve them to last in certain applications. There are flexibility, voltage and approval differences in the two electrical wire size that will be discussed in detail. You will be able to understand why and why you might not be able to use each cable in your particular situation.
Welding cable is much more common due to personal welding machines, low voltage power applications and industrial welding machines. It is rated for 600 volts with a temperature rating of 90oC. It has a single layer of EPDM rubber insulation that protects the copper strands from outdoor use and rugged handling throughout its life. There is another type of welding cable with UL, CSA and MSHA approvals that industrial applications use and it comes with a much more durable insulation as well.
DLO cable comes in 2000 volts with the same rubber insulation and an additional rubber jacket that helps reach 2000 volts and helps protect it from the common locomotive installation. DLO stands for diesel locomotive and it comes flexible but less flexible than power cable manufacturers. It has 24 AWG tinned copper strands compared to 30 AWG bare copper strands. The outer diameter of the 2 AWG DLO is .52 inches compared to the 2 AWG welding at .46 inches. The additional jacket is what makes the outer diameter difference in this case.
Electrical cables in 2 AWG come in many different forms which you can understand better when you discuss it with your wire and cable distributor or your electrician. Some are used indoors, outdoors, in conduit and directly underground as long as they have the protection needed to do it. If you need an underground cable in 2 AWG you should see USE-2 solar panel cable because it doesn’t even need to be installed in conduit. You can dig a trench and put this wire directly in the ground without a worry of it not lasting the full life span.
Speak to your supplier about the type of insulation that covers your copper cable. The insulation is what allows the armored cable to be used in various applications indoors and out. The cost difference is in the amount of engineering, manufacturing and cost of materials which will get more expensive as your move outdoors or underground in this case. Your electrician will help you with the actual AWG size you need in order to meet the NEC electrical code and pass inspection.

Xinglong Bookstore by MUDA-Architects, China Unbuilt Commercial, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
The bookstore’s design takes the idea of “a book falling from the sky” as the starting point of the story, and the architectural form is taken from book. Through this metaphor, the team hoped that people can walk into the building to read themselves, and to complete a journey of self-discovery in a peaceful environment.
Tibet Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum by Shenzhen HuaHui Design, Tibet, China Architecture +Art, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
Tibet is considered to be a holy place close to the sky, with the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple being pilgrims’ destinations. The team’s basic design concept of “Heavenly Road” is consistent with the most unique natural and cultural genes in Tibet. The concept of “heavenly road” is embodied at three levels.
Play Stack Shenyang by CLOU architects, Shenyang, China Commercial-Shopping Center, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
Designed to be a shopping mall as a playground, ‘Play Stack’ is a kid’s themed mall with piled up boxes containing playful elements. Terraced volumes, connecting staircases and a large roof deck are threaded into a continuous exterior ‘play scape’ path.

3D Printed Pedestrian Bridge by XWG Archi-Studio, Beijing, Shanghai, China Architecture +Technology, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
Inspired by the ancient Anji Bridge in Zhaoxian, China, this bridge adopts the structure of a single arch to bear the load. The 3D printing concrete system is independently developed by Professor Xu Weiguo’s team. It integrates technologies such as digital architectural design, printing path generation, operation control system, printing tool, concrete material, etc.
123+ Kindergarten by OfficeOffCourse, Shanghai, China Institutional-Kindergartens, Popular Choice Winner, 2019 Architecture +Learning, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
The 123+ kindergarten is located in a newly built shopping center. It adopts the Montessori method of education, which views the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment.
Dongsi 5Lmeet by DAGA Architects, Beijing, China Commercial-Coworking Space, Popular Choice Winner & Jury Winner, 2019
The Dongsi 5Lmeet was an abandoned soy sauce factory surrounded by the old gray-tiled buildings. It is not far from the historical Duan Qirui Prime Minister’s Office, and next door is a residential development that’s been there for decades. 5Lmeet was made to be an innovative space in an old community.
Louis Vuitton by Nathan Allan Glass Studios, Beijing, China Architecture +Glass, Jury Winner, 2019
As Louis Vuitton’s flagship store in Beijing China, this high end retail store features a storefront section that was completely renovated with custom kiln formed glass. 32 panels of various sizes, totaling over 1000 square feet of glass, were formed, safety tempered, and installed. The custom design was produced using a special “Freeform Series” production process, which creates deep 3D patterned glass.
Exhibition Center of Longquan National Archaeological Park of China by OfficeOffCourse, Longquan, Lishui, China Architecture +Glass, Popular Choice Winner, 2019 Cultural-Gallery, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
Historically, Longquan celadon is a type of green-glazed Chinese ceramic, known as celadon or green ware, produced from about AD950-AD1550. The national Archaeological Park is built to preserve the Longquan historical kiln conservation sites in Dayao village.
X-House by asap/ adam sokol architecture practice, Beijing, China Architecture +Metal, Jury Winner, 2019
Situated in Beijing’s tallest residential structure, the X-House is a showcase business and residential space for an international entrepreneur. Designed to accommodate business meetings, banquets, guests, and other functions, the space features a 1000-bottle wine cellar, tasting room, and spa bathrooms.

The Shadow Garden is one of the five satellite pavilions located in the first completed phase of 2021 World Horticulture Expo site in Yangzhou. Based on the scheme, this expo reflects the beauty of local landscape and plants as well as its programmatic requirement which is an educational place. The design aims to generate a new relationship between landscape and architecture.
Village Lounge of Shangcun by SUP Atelier, Jixi, China Architecture +Community, Jury Winner, 2019
The village lounge in Shangcun turned the ruined courtyard into a public space, providing leisure, multi-used community space for both local residents and tourists.
VITA-The Fortune Bridge by Arizon Design, Zhengzhou, China Transportation-Transportation Infrastructure, Popular Choice Winner & Jury Winner, 2019
As the main lead into the Shopping Boulevard, the bridge represents the architect’s hope of providing youngsters with emotional support. It is thus referred to as “the Fortune Bridge”.
Bozhou Stadium by Yuan Ye Architects/China Construction Engineering , Bozhou, China Sport & Recreation-Stadium/Arena, Jury Winner, 2019
Bozhou Stadium abstracts the inverted trapezoidal form from Han Dynasty architecture and utilizes it as the basic geometric form of the building. It also uses the square pool along the shape as the “base” to ground the building form and emphasize the purity of the building. Inspired by the local armor of the warriors of the Han Dynasty, the architectural skin simulates the folding of the armor’s surface with a continuous triangular folding surface.
Vanke Emerald Park by Lacime Architects, Chongqing, China Sport & Recreation-Recreation Centers, Jury Winner, 2019
In Vanke Park, the outer frame, column and cornice of the main building are all designed with an oblique section. The horizontal lines of the floor intersect with the inclined planes between the columns, which increases the requirement for construction accuracy. The square main building is surrounded by water on three sides, and the columns of the outer frame fall on the water.
Yunmen Montain all-seasons Resort by ATAH, Qingzhou, Weifang, China Sport & Recreation-Recreation Centers, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
The Yunmen Mountain all-seasons Resort is located at the Qilu Mountain Region. Although the local city of Qingzhou is famous for its history and vernacular architecture, visitors can immediately feel the presence of the vast nature when immersed in the mountains. Hence, the design concept is based on integration into the mountains and nature, rather than cultural expression or history.
Hangzhou Haishu School of Future Sci-Tech City by LYCS Architecture, Hangzhou, China Institutional-Primary & High Schools, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
Traditional school planning in modern Chinese cities usually provides students and children with an adult-scale campus environment at an excessively early stage. Facing these phenomenon, the architects aimed to subversively break these conventions in school planning and offer children with space of their own scale and age in which they could enjoy living and studying.
Hengdian Hotel by gad, China Hospitality-Unbuilt Hospitality, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
The hotel is located in the center of Hengdian City, the “Chinese Hollywood.” The site is surrounded by three sides by mountains which are also forested. The design concept is building the image of the contemporary private residence through the arrangement of courtyards which are based on the space of the local famous private residence called Lu Residence, or “the Folk Forbidden City”.
Dreaming Someone by WAY Studio, Beijing, China Hospitality-Restaurants, Jury Winner, 2019
WAY Studio recently completed the “Aye by Meeting Someone” restaurant in Beijing to explore spatial performance and provide a transient surreal experience to visitors.  The spherical entrance, the infamous rabbit hole, crashes into the wall and creates ripples on the exterior façade. Designed with computational scripting, the façade has become a juxtaposition between technology and craftsmanship, linking modernity with tradition.
M50 Art Hotel by MUDA-Architects, China Architecture +Models & Rendering, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
M50 Art Hotel Project is located in Pingle, Sichuan. Pingle Ancient Town is planned to be a music theme town. Therefore, the starting point of this project was around “Music”. In this project, MUDA- Architects strived to explore and activate local culture genes, and to create a landmark building that can inherit the historical context and also is forward-looking.
Boat Rooms on the Fuchun River by The Design Institute Of Landscape & Architecture China Academy Of Art , Hangzhou, China Hospitality-Hotels & Resorts, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
These boat rooms “float” on the west bank of a lake where the resort covers a large area. The concept and shape of the “boat room” take its root in a local social custom from Fuchun.
Dongshang by Imafuku Architects, Beijing, China Hospitality-Bars & Nightclubs, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
Located in Beijing’s central business district, Dongshang is a contemporary Japanese restaurant and bar with a wide selection of sake and Japanese whisky. The vision of the client was to create a Japanese-style venue, while also representing the elements of Chinese culture, as well as featuring natural materials.
One City Development by Aspect Studios, Hubei, China Landscape & Planning-Urban & Masterplans, Popular Choice Winner, 2019
Aspect Studios set out to create a destination that provides a unique response to the public realm of the city and a place that acknowledges the importance of socially orientated space for people. To do this the team drew upon contemporary Wuhan lifestyle and the traditional local mythology of the ‘Phoenix’. The design is structured with a series of diverse spaces, nodes and experiences connected and unified by a fluid gesture and movement.
