Chapter snippet
That darkness on Barry’s face. Always so compelling. “There’s nothing more important than this, Snart! Did you hear me when I said these metahumans are ready to end this city?”
“Yes, and I think you’re probably exaggerating.” Seems Len needs to try something a little more direct. He heads for the table and grabs a napkin. “If I'm gonna help you out, I’ll need something in return.”
That gets Barry's attention. “Like what?”
Len glances around. If any murderous monsters in yellow leather try to take a peek at what he’s about to write, he’ll be too slow to stop them. But it’s still safer than saying it out loud.
"This." On the napkin, Len writes in a neat hand that betrays none of what he’s feeling.
Iris has been taken. Heard from our mutual friend in yellow?
Were it not for the jukebox playing ‘Cold as Ice’ in the background, Len could have heard a pin drop.
“What do you mean, taken?” Barry's voice quakes on the last word. “How do you know?”
Len looks up from the napkin. In the Flash’s eyes, he sees the one thing he’s not expecting. Barry knows.
“Not here,” Len murmurs back. “Parading your identity at any old bar is one thing. But I think our mutual friend might have been watching us.”
“Us… You and Iris.” Barry's resigned little nod almost makes Len feel bad for him.
Len slides a $20 bill across the bar. Saints and Sinners stopped taking credit cards a long time ago, not that Len would ever have used a stolen one here. “Where can we go where unwelcome ears won’t be listening in?”
“The labs,” Barry says. “It’s the only place where… our friend won't be just wandering around. Not anymore.”
Interesting. “Seriously, Barry? You'd just let your nemesis walk right into the place where all the good stuff happens?”
“Please help me,” Barry whispers. That little voice is jarring, from the Flash. “Please help Iris.”
Len nods. He pockets the napkin, and lets Barry speed him off to STAR Labs.
