Late post but I just want to say RIP to the one and only Aaliyah. The anniversary of your death and funeral were not to long ago and I still think about you. You were so beautiful and I mourned you when you passed away. Because of my gift I have, I got to communicate with you when I saw you in different places years ago. We fell in love with each other. /.\ 🕊💜It was this day #17years ago that I had read on a message board that Aaliyah had passed in a plane crash. I didn’t believe it. I quickly checked MTV’s website & there with a heavy heart it was. I was 19 years old and overcome with grief not shared for any other celebrity or person I didn’t know who passed suddenly. My father came in my room and said “Aaliyah died... That’s really sad. I really liked her in Romeo Must Die.” I didn’t even know my old man had seen the movie. It just showed me that Aaliyah made a positive impression with her gift to anyone who came across her artistry. That day I had to go do a photo project for a friend. I look absolutely miserable in the photos. It felt like an out of body experience. “How could the world keep on turning , when this amazing talented angel had just left us , her family , the world so suddenly. It didn’t seem fair. I cried. I found solace in the Aaliyah fan message boards and fan sites at the time. Quinn Mallory a fan who ran a site orchestrated a vigil & for those that couldn’t make it we could light a candle at home at 6:45 pm to have a moment of silence and prayer for Aaliyah and all those that lost their lives that day. It was cathartic & I wish there was a place for Aaliyah fans to embrace each other like that again. 🙏Even 17 years later I still find it hard to listen to her music or watch her on film . It always triggers the memories of her passing, the “If onlys” & the “What could have been.” I don’t know how her brother Rashad and Diane cope . Aaliyah, you have been weighing heavy on my mind and heart more than ever…it’s like my body, my entire existence has a visceral reaction to the approach of August, before my mind can even compute what month I’m in. My heart always knows before my brain does. It’s innate. I dread this month. This day. Some years I’ve been able to focus on the positive of your life, your legacy. Celebrating you the best way I know how. This year, I can’t help but feel the sorrow sweep over me in waves, the immense void seems bigger than ever….the loss, palpable. Life has really been an intense battle as of late, but your voice, your joy, your essence always comforts me through my struggles enough for me to somehow make it through the day. I feel guilty at times that I’m not present on here like I used to be, like I’m somehow letting you down. But I know you know my heart, I can see it in every little message you send my way. When I’m walking through a store, on the verge of tears because I’ve had a difficult day, I hear your voice come over the loudspeakers, like you’re singing just for me. Like that’s your way of letting me know that you hear me and that I will be ok. So thank you Aaliyah, for still being there. For still guiding us. Guiding me. For still being a beacon of light in an often all too dark world. It’s hard to believe that you have now been gone the same amount of years that you once graced this Earth 💔

I miss you daily, I love you…eternally. I know you know how much.

During one of her last interviews, with journalist Touré at Jay’s Hamptons mansion just two weeks before her untimely passing in August 2001, Aaliyah said this about her close friend: 

“He is the sweetest person. I have so much fun when I’m with him. I admire him because he’s an amazing talent, and on top of that he’s a beautiful person. He’s really good people.”
