AO3 wrapped - 16, 30
<3 thank u for asking! I’ve technically just answered these two, but I’ll add a little extra that I didn’t mention the first time around.
for 16 (most common additional tag): a lot of my tags were variations of ‘canon-typical X’ - like canon-typical violence, or angst, or existential angst. stuff like that. all together, as a single category, they definitely make up a significant portion of my tags.
for 30 (what surprised you most while writing): I read House of Leaves in September for the very first time, and I soaked up dear Johnny Truant’s prose like a sponge and immediately set about writing some things in that style (because what else was I supposed to do, just move on?). the last time I did this was… oh… as late as February 2022, the last time I wrote a fic for The Witcher, imitating Sapkowski’s (English translated) narration style. what surprised me was just how easily I was able to slip into a different style of writing—but given that they’re both incredibly wordy, it should maybe not be that much of a surprise at all.

Throwback Thursday Sunday
@starsuncounted & @jomiddlemarch tagged me to share an oldie but goodie—thank you!
The rule is to share a fic older than a week, and 2021 was over a week ago, so: Suffer a Sea Change (PotC, one-sided Norrington/Elizabeth, Norrington & Jack, Elizabeth & Jack, ~5000 words), which features musing on matrimonial discontent, magnetic anomalies, and at least one extremely obvious metaphor - all on the voyage to the Isla de Muerta. I'm not usually proud of my fic, but!
“It’s what it does. Sold five years’ worth of dreams and a piece of Ponce de León’s map of the road to Bimini to a powerful witch for the damn thing,” Sparrow said, “A bargain, really; dreamless sleep’s a blessing when you get where I’ve got.” “Your broken compass is – you expect me to believe your compass is enchanted?" “I don’t expect it. Curious if you will believe it, though.” “I don’t,” said Norrington, who was starting to feel ridiculous for even having this conversation out loud. “Ah. How dull. And I suppose you believe Charleton, that the Morgana of the Messina Strait is just the crystal bits and bobs of the sand and antimony in the Sicilian hills, and that hot sun of the Med making the sky a mirror?” “A more likely explanation than a fairy queen of England conjuring Palladian cities off Sicily,” Norrington shot back. Sparrow, irksome as ever, merely shrugged. “The compass points to the Pearl because I want it to, Commodore. Simple as that.”

last song: probably the view between villages (extended version) because im a Sad Bastard
currently watching: so much! tragically today it has been antm because some days you need mess/trash, but my wife and i are going to resume our boardwalk empire rewatch ASAP and i’ll probably continue my dark rewatch soon too
currently reading: the poppy war by rf kuang, but also juniper and thorn by ava reid
current obsession: the bo and jantje ‘verse with a special focus on 1899! its where i will probably be living for at least a year if not longer (probably longer since lost was like two years and my otp barely held hands in that one; the sheer amount of otp content i got from 1899 will sustain me for ages)

Tagged by the wonderful, outstanding @fatherramiro!
last song: Chicago by Sufjan Stevens (I've been on a bit of a Sufjan Stevens kick lately lol)
currently watching: Trying to rewatch Upstairs Downstairs (1971), 1899, and The Red Shoes (1948)... clearly I have a problem with sticking to one thing at a time. Also I never watch anything new. It's also hard when rewatching just one scene of any of these makes me want to cry lol
currently reading: An Equal Music by Vikmar Seth
current obsession: 1899 has decidedly taken precedence in my obsessions, and everything else I'm interested in has been influenced by it
tagging @exoticlittlebird, @admiraleyk (I know you've already been tagged but I'm running out of options) and also whoever wants to I guess. only if you want to of course

16 was a typo and I meant to ask for 15, if you want to answer that. :)
oh, I will gladly answer this, though I’m terrified of the question :’)
15: What WIP are you taking into next year with you?
The answer to this is… all of my existing WIPs, which is to say a bunch of things that may never get finished, but that I would maybe one day like to return to.
fics I have partially completed at present and fully intend to finish:
- The Quarry fic in which the surviving counsellors reunite in North Kill 7 years after the events of the main game
- Dark fic in which a young Hanno Tauber meets and finds himself attracted to a mysterious stranger who travels to Winden in ~1920 (and that mysterious stranger is his older self, surprise)
- Dark fic in which Noah and Jonas celebrate the activation of the god particle by vigorously fucking
- Dark fic that is just a Jonas/Noah/Elisabeth threesome
- 1899 fic that is just an Eyk/Maura/Daniel threesome
there are far more than this, but these are the ones I feel I’m most likely to actually finish up!

Last Line Game
I was tagged by the very kind @aloveforjaneausten!
(fast and loose) rules: Post the last sentence you wrote (fanfic / original / anything) and tag as many people as there are words in the sentence.
“It was the kind of place you – that you didn’t get what you wanted,” Vicki said, carefully, thinking of a dozen other things she could have said about the orphanage.
That's too many words; I don't know that many people. Writing Patterns
Tagged by @jomiddlemarch - thank you, kind friend!
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern.
1. “Miss Winters,” said Jeremiah Collins, stepping out of the night into the gloom of her lamp: he had a half-shuttered lantern of his own in one hand, and a bundle of heavy wool in the other. 2. It had been late when they left the Cushings’ party; it was later, now. 3. In stretches of silence, along the long dark road from Bangor, she had had the strange sense of being alone in the world – that it was only Roger Collins and her left alive, and all the rest had gone. 4. “Spenser, from our Chaplain? Has Holy Scripture been exhausted already?” 5. Things change in Collinsport, Joe Haskell believes – the weather, hourly; Carolyn’s moods, the same – the tides, the light, the seasons. 6. There had been noise – now there wasn’t. 7. “Captain –” an embarrassed cough, trailing into an equally uncomfortable silence; the tall, grim being (thing, some part of Elizabeth Swann thought unkindly) that had been James Norrington in life bowed, and settled on formality. 8. Her mother died twice. 9. Victoria Winters woke thinking of what she had gone to bed dwelling on: that her best handkerchief was missing, and she’d lost it in the dining room of the Collinsport Inn of all places. 10. “It’s unusual, that’s all I’m saying,” said one of the men at the oars to another, shivering.
I tend to do a lot of scene-setting, I think? Not as much as I used to, maybe. I have two starting lines under 10 words, which is possibly a sign of the end times? Collinsport gets namechecked twice, which I suppose is: have I mentioned we're in (fictional) Maine recently? we're in Maine.

tagged by the lovely and thoughtful @jomiddlemarch & @aloveforjaneausten. thank you, friends!
“Impulse,” he replied, looking at her closely. She might have been an animalcule under the ingenious lenses of the Dutch draper Lady Hammond had thought so highly of – or a foolish lamb lured away from the herd by greener grass, too close to the trees. “I told you, little governess: Collinsport has eaten hardier men than you alive – I hope I shall see you again, but I doubt it.”
(yeah yeah it's more than one sentence but it's one whole line. no it doesn't make sense.)

WIP Tag Game
Tagged by the lovely @aloveforjaneausten
RULES: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
full disclosure: I don't have a WIP folder so much as I have a "recently worked on list" in the midst of the mire that is my writing folder. For the sake of argument, I'm considering a WIP to mean "writing project" and "opened in the last two weeks".

Writing Pattern Game
Thank you so much for tagging me, @shoshiwrites <3
Rules: Share the first line of your last ten published works or as many as you are able and see if there are any patterns!
untitled da:i ficlet, inquisitor in Haven
It wasn’t that the sun set any earlier in the mountains than it did in similar latitudes; the sky stayed day-bright, hours after Haven fell into darkness.
untitled da:i ficlet, inquisitor & blackwall in Haven
“There’s no mystery to it,” said Sophy, around the pins in her mouth, “Do you know how many Trevalyen children there are?”
untitled da:i ficlet, inquisitor & party in Crestwood
“So, Hero,” said Varric, leaning back in his chair, as Blackwall threw another log on the fire, “Wish you were back in Skyhold yet?”
untitled da:i ficlet, inquisitor & blackwall in Skyhold
“Respectfully, my lady Trevalyen,” said Blackwall, speaking between swings of a maul, the thud of split wood falling against the warm soil, “Solas – or even Pavus, or Madame de Fer – would be better able to answer such a question.”
Who something lost, the seeking for Is all that's left them, now - (1899, pre- Clémence/Jérôme)
“It’s unusual, that’s all I’m saying,” said one of the men at the oars to another, shivering.
half-built and half-rotted (potc: dmc, 5 sentence prompt fic, james norrington in tortuga)
Tortuga had been a new place, but all new places could be learned: a small island and a smaller port, half-built and half-rotted, alive in the same way that bloody-faced vultures and mushrooms were.
some familiar thing missing, or some unfamiliar thing at home (potc:dmc, 5 sentence prompt fic, elizabeth swann cannot figure james norrington out)
Truthfully, she never expected to see James Norrington again, and in some ways Elizabeth is not sure she has: there is a man in a hammock who answers to that name, who has a captain’s coat, and the same sharp-tongued disdain for what irritates him – but (and here, when she has thought on it, she has struggled) either there is some familiar thing missing, or some unfamiliar thing at home.
stood in the twilight (timeless, five sentence prompt fic, lucy preston and garcia flynn contemplate the sublime, and frostbite)
“Have you ever seen anything like it?” Lucy asked, thinking she would have gestured to the fading light in the sky if she could have borne unwrapping her heavy wool shawl for the half-second it would have taken to point – but they did not call 1816 The Year Without A Summer for nothing.
irrevocably altered (potc:cotbp, five sentence prompt fic, elizabeth swann at odds with her old life)
There was comfort, if only in the physical attributes of the King’s House in Port Royal: her feather-soft mattress, food not gone rotted in the cask, windows wide to every wandering breeze – things which Elizabeth had always understood, vaguely and without much in comparison, to be luxuries.
a pass-port for her presence (mercy street, five sentence prompt fic, henry hopkins struggles with emma green's indirect words)
It was easier to know those you didn’t than those you did, Henry Hopkins had thought at some distant, drunken point in the past – a practice as straightforward as prayer, to copy a man’s words exactly to send to his family, or to recall who and which had requested some concession or another.
Patterns:
A prompt specifically for five sentences brings out the worst in me, length-of-sentence-wise.
I love dialogue as a starter, particularly "Indirect Observation," Specific Description of Speaker/Speaker's Actions, "Indirect Observation, Continued And/Or Refined."
I think I try to establish who the POV character is pretty quickly - maybe too quickly?
what is it with me writing fics where someone's chopping firewood, or fussing with firewood. i'm not that cold all the time.

WIP Tag!
Tagged by @mercurygray & @shoshiwrites — thank you! Here's the fourth draft of the start of Ch. 31:
James Norrington and Uncle Bendish were speaking in the office after dinner, which worried Nellie even more than her friend's grim near-silence during the meal itself. Nellie had discretely asked Aunt B about it, and been rebuffed. Not unkindly – and so Nellie had sat with her nervous curiosity and Lydia's embroidery, sorting out a badly snarled skein while her cousin hummed. She heard the familiar footsteps in from the hall, and looked up – he looked away as soon as he saw her, but asked her for a game any way. Nellie set up the board with apprehension, unwilling to press publicly what was troubling him, thinking that if it were an ill wind for her, at least it was not in his nature to gloat.
