BMTH’s amo : full album review - part 2, tracks 9 - 13
alright, i know i said this was going to be posted earlier, and it’s a few days late, but hey, at least i finished it.
9. why you gotta kick me when i’m down?
youtube
cool fact : when i originally typed the title of the video, i typed in “why you gotta kink me when i’m down”.
what i thought when i saw the title-
Sleeping with Sirens (2013) - Kick Me
Bring Me The Horizon (2019) - why you gotta kick me when i’m down
i can’t be the only one.
okay, first listen, this is pretty good.
and the way oli starts yelling the lyrics during the bridge.
and when he sings “roof” UGH.
the symphonic sounds throughout the song especially during the chorus are cool too.
the sirens during bridge kinda kill it though.
also that ending from 4:00 onward is pretty cool. it reminds me of Korn’s “Blind” where they have that awkward guitar sliding and bending with the drums at the end.
10. fresh bruises
youtube
okay, again the auto tune, really?
and i know this band is going in a different direction. and i respect that.
and i don’t mind auto tune, really, it’s just that it’s overused (rather, it’s has been used for the entirety of the song).
ooh 0:57 got funky.
but really the drums in this one are just  👌👌👌👌🔥🔥🔥🔥.
11. mother tongue
i’ve already done a review for this, so click here to go there ^_^
12. heavy metal ft. Rahzel
youtube
DUDE THIS SOUNDS SO GOOD
LIKE THAT INTRO. DAMN. DAMN. I FELL DOWN AND I CAN’T GET UP.
and rahzel’s fills in the song is pretty cool. i like that for that second person dialogue in this song they got another person to do it.
also bmth calling out their fans that hate on them for changing-
they call out the way they dress.
the way they act.
the things they said.
the things they EXPECT.
but this band just doesn’t care. AND I LOVE IT.
and then oli’s growl at the end is just god DAMN CAN THIS BAND GET ANY BETTER.
wonder how that kid feels now after the band literally butchered them by making a song about their comment on instagram 😂.
another favorite of mine. this is so meta i love it.
13. i don’t know what to say
youtube
dude the violin symphonies like YES.
all bands need like some orchestral elements because they are so good.
and when that acoustic guitar kicks in it just got better.
also is the way the yellow circle expanding referencing how the sun is expanding and it might explode and kill us all?
also did i mention the guitars on this song because they are AMAZING. just the way they merge with the electronics as well is really good.
another cool one. maybe not my favorite, but pretty good.
conclusion : i have mixed feelings about this one. bmth are one of my favorite bands of all time, and are an artist that got me further into heavier stuff in the metal department. i’ve liked every album up to now (yes, even that’s the spirit), but some songs on this album don’t cut it for me. when i first listened to MANTRA, wonderful life, and mother tongue (yes, even mother tongue) i knew this album was most likely to be a banger. sugar, ice, honey & tea, heavy metal, in the dark, i don’t know what to say and why you gotta kick me when i’m down? were also great songs. after a few listens, i got used to nihilist blues and medicine. but then there are songs like i apologise if you feel something, ouch, and fresh bruises that are just too electronic-y or just kill the song with auto tune. i’m glad the band experimented. because not only that they are getting bigger and bigger with each release, and keep getting new fans, but it makes them happy. and i respect that. there is no point if an artist keeps doing the same shit over and over again and doesn’t like it.
and besides how the album did musically, all lyrics (even the songs that i didn’t like) were amazing. especially the follow you (off of their album That’s The Spirit) references in ouch. the band, especially oliver wrote them with a lot of pain (from his divorce) and also passion. he really put a lot of work into it and it’s just good. i’ve always loved and admired oliver for his lyrics in every album. and he didn’t fail this time either.
will i still listen to this band? yes. even though some songs aren’t my thing, and even though this album isn’t my new favorite by them (i’m still stuck on There is a Hell and Sempiternal), some of these songs are great! really are. i don’t know what they might do next for their next album. this is a band that likes to do something different with every release. i’ll still listen for the old stuff, and will listen for what’s next.
Tumblr media
and thanks to ANYONE who has actually read the whole thing. i know it’s a CHORE for some people to read, and if you read this, good job. here’s a candy bar🍫.
here’s a link for the review for the first half of the album.
thanks again,
stayed tuned for more reviews,
- jo Xx

BMTH’s “Medicine”: An Honest Review
youtube
Hello! I’m so glad to be back after such a LONG time now that Tumblr’s not blocked in Indonesia anymore! Been running a side blog on Blogger but it’s just not the same you know ;-( Anyway, I was procrastinating on my work and saw an online discussion on Bring Me The Horizon’s recently-released track Medicine and, since I miss writing, I might as well write about my opinion on it!
When I first heard the song, I was ambivalent towards it; I didn’t know if I liked it or not. Its definitely not a song that I get hooked by on first listen and makes me want to listen to it over and over again (unlike Mantra), but I thought that it would be unfair if I just judged it on first listen, so I listened to it a couple of times more, and decided that I like it.
Melody-wise, I’d have to admit that it’s not my favorite. It’s quite slow: it’s not pop, it’s not rock, but it’s somewhere inbetween. That doesn’t mean it’s not good, though. Whilst I prefer some of their heavier songs like Go To Hell, For Heaven’s sake and Blessed With A Curse, I can’t deny that I enjoyed this song as well. Also, I was expecting it to not be heavy anyway -- the band stated that Wonderful Life is the heaviest song from their new album “amo,” and I didn’t even think the song was their usual kind of heavy, so I kind of saw it coming.
Lyrics-wise, I think it’s amazing. It’s aggressive, it’s angry, it’s honest, and it’s relatable. The first two lines especially, “Some people are a lot like clouds, you know / ‘Cause life’s so much brighter than they go” hits so close to home, and I’m sure it’s not just me. In fact, I can imagine this piece of lyrics being as popular even among non-BMTH fans like “I can’t drown my demons, they know how to swim” from their song Can You Feel My Heart. Apart from the lyrics being aggressive and angry, I think it’s also pretty mature. It’s not just pointing fingers at someone and blaming them for what they did, instead, it’s more like Oli coming to terms with reality and how people are sometimes: that there are toxic people in our lives and they are going to treat you like shit sometimes, but we’re gonna have to deal with it and take action. So, yeah, the lyrics are cool.
This may be unrelated my opinion towards the song itself, but I thought the visuals are AMAZING! It’s creative, it’s unique, disturbing at some point -- but art is supposed to disturb the comforted and comfort the disturbed ;-) I could look at the visuals over and over again tbh ‘cause it’s just beautiful. Mad props to the artist Oliver Latta for the animations!
Overall, I enjoyed the song! Personally, I don’t think it’s the best from their album (not all the songs are out but Mantra and Wonderful Life are and I still prefer the two compared to this one) but it’s still a good song -- just because it doesn’t fit to my personal taste, doesn’t automatically mean that it’s bad. It’s not a song I’d have on repeat but it’s definitely a song I will keep in my library and listen to again. Disagree? Feel free! But this is my opinion and I’m still entitled to it. I am writing this from an objective point of view and me still liking this song despite it being so different from their usual sound doesn’t automatically disqualify me from being a ‘true BMTH fan.’ People -- including artists and musicians -- grows, and sometimes their art grows with them. Art is something that is linked tightly with the artist’s emotions, feelings, and perspective, so it is a very much normal thing for a band’s sound to change, because in writing songs they don’t just write what the market demands, but they write something that resonates with their hearts. So as much as people are dynamic, so is music, and if you can’t accept that, it’s not me nor the artists’ fault :-) Cheers!
