Concept spread for the SK8 The Infinity Ainosuke and Adam-centric @flourish-adam-zine​, a project dedicated to the facets and healing process of his character, underlined by a blue hour to sunrise matching imagery/symbolism and palette.

I’m very grateful to the zine mods for both organizing this project around a fascinating, nuanced and meaningful themes&character for so many fans, and also for trusting me to convey the theme of Blue Hour for the zine opening spread.

The garden is populated by flowers species alluding each to the main characters in the series. Dragonflies and butterflies are featured for their link with symbolism of the soul, death rebirth and renewal ( dragonflies are also linked to...TEETH - we love our fangy lad here - . Butterflies are tied to the Eros and Psyche myth as bonus (forbidden heteronormativity-defying gods-defying love quest...) The garden setting in itself carries further symbolism both via its canon relevance entwined with Biblical ties (underlined by the presence of an apple tree) Adam’s head is framed by the full moon (which is yet another canon reference and symbol of his journey in key scenes in the anime), which in turn mirrors Ai’s golden rays halo on the left of the image.  Ainosuke's medieval art-flavoured SaintLoveMartyr halo has little hearts as tips but also some hybrid nested hearts motif along the rays... that also might resemble tiny crowns. Also the halo structure overall is a little nod to rose windows... or karmic wheels. The pattern on Ainosuke’s vest resembles a [net] fence which again pokes at that Eden/Paradise garden symbolism and forbidden gardens (including the secret skating space at S, that’s itself a foil to the literal and figurative space that shaped Ai’s life on the Shindo grounds): enclosed spaces that can be both a separate ymmv safe space and a confinement, if not a prison. Places for thriving or suffering, zigzagging between bliss, happiness, communion, isolation, segregation, danger, golden captivity, masking and unmaksing, concealment and revelation, freedom. See also: the medieval Christian concept of hortus conclusus, and how the Matador Of Love is the rose boy in more ways than one (barazoku as Japanese vintage queer code - rose for mlm, lilies [yuri] for wlw -; he’s a rose giver but also the guarded treasure flower as his family lone scion, the precious asset and how the themes of power, control and love come to play into that). He’s the bull killer but also the bull. He literally carries his heart(s) on his sleeve (and on his skateboard) but wears many masks and layered identities. Both revealing and concealing... In a rather cleverly written and coded series as SK8 is he has definitely so many fascinating layers to explore :)

Low resolution but…. So this is what happen when you shorten the distance between Ainosuke and Langa? The way this man looks at his snow bunny, the bouquet of roses… One more thing I notice is the fact that Langa’s skateboard is between them as well. Ik Reki have his, but it doesn’t matter. What it matters it’s the message. 1 the picture with the word “Fun” 2 langa’s board 3 the picture with a ❤️ The love to skateboarding, to have fun. The knowledge Langa transmitted to Ainosuke. No wonder he’s no hiding anymore in this art, it’s not Adam but Ainosuke who’s with them. It’s Ainosuke who’s giving this beautiful bouquet of roses to his little Langa.
