Notes from book 3 of foreigner by c. J. Cherryh inheritor

on August the 17 of this year, I read Inheritor by C. J. Cherryh and now I understand why some people suggest to skip the first 2 for this one, its kind of good. as usual Swearing and spoilers ahead.

Chapter 1

Bren eats eggs with lord Geigi , Tano and Algini by the seaside and manages to explain what the hell happened in the earlier books quite well. Also explains a bunch of shit I missed because I am a periodic fool. Grigiji, the name of the astrologer that saved the world, my bad. Also yes he lost sleep from nightmare scenarios. It sounds like the government punished bren by keeping him from seeing his mother. It seemed like jase was a bist scared and unhappy while on the planet with him. Gaylord Hanks , who the fuck give first names to a kid that?. He gets a message after leaving geigi to go back to the guild approved hotel when he gets a message from Surieji

Chapter 2

Hes looking at the spacecraft being built by the aveti. He give a whole speech about why the spaceship is kind of important and meets back with Geigi. Great they just got news that lord Saigami was assassinated and Geigi might be the suspect, great. Direiso

Chapter 3

So it seemed like I got some flowers from supporters and the workers of the ship of his. 

Lady direiso might be the real target of the assassination on saigami. It also seems like banichi and jago are both busy with something had haven't  talked with him in months. Describing them in the same paragraph as being "in that spot humans kept soft and warm and vulnerable in their hearts". Tano and Algini are just stuck together personally and algini was so quiet algini was thought to be dead. Man'chi is emotional as he had learned. He has finally made it home.

Chaper 4

The house that he was in 2 is back and the seems to be a meeting tabini wants to have with him. Saidin greets him. His mother sounds like a fuck up in a nasty way. Jason or Jase is dressing. The son of the lore dur from the last chapter is still managing to live in his head rent free. After taking a bath he gets a towel from Tano and run into jase. Jase now has a braid and looking miserable. It turns out that jase had a bad day and was worried about where he was . It sounds like that not only was the paidhi was not only picked for adaptability to learning a language but he was also pick due to self control, it hints that not only was deana was not worthy but bren might have been hinted to have enough emotional issues from his child hood with his parents may have helped him, for better or worse, get picked for it.

Chapter 5

Bren and jase are at dinner after cooling down a little bit. Turns out jase accidentally said the staff where all rain clouds when he was trying to say was he probably offended members of the staff. It also sounds like he is getting better but still not faster. Yolanda sounds like she was sent to the island and sounded level headed. Holy hell I adore this chapter that feels like a hurt/comfort and it just shows just what bren can do to try to comfort him. Also he finds out that the people harassing his mother might be using the isolation to get his mom to not like him and jases dad died just 4 days ago. He wants to try to comfort jase but he doesn't know if he should.

Chapter 6

He wonders if he should try to comfort jase and try to get the phone shit show solved. He also asks Tano what happens when the death of a parent happens around the aveti, he describes it as Confirm man'chi like being in a place to go. He tells them that he needs the aveti may need to check if any of the staff have been with holding messages while he checks out if the humans are doing something else as well. He is writing a letter about the situation when banichi is back with Jago. 

Chaper 7

Bren is with Jago while trying to deal with the shit going down. Oh my gosh he has the hots for her. Well they both go talking with banichi and jago on the shit they missed and who could have done it. He goes to bed thinking about how the first book changed him with ilisidi that showed him. 

Chapter 8

He finds out that in the morning that they did not tell jase directly but they told Yolanda for some shitty reason. And the dur son's antics are Kind of annoying. He talks to jase who is unsurprisingly upset about not getting privacy to talk to his mom. Bren probably suspects he's starting to get depression from all the bullshit. 

Chapter 9

It looks like the meeting then he hears tabini getting notes for damiri wanting to bring her uncle to the house. Dean hawks is a shit and brens going to have to deal with jaee during the whole shit. Bren real uses that maybe relocating could be helpful for jase. So it seems like ilisidi is gonna be back and as quote tabini about how she feels about Bren `` oh don't be modest. She dotes on you. You're Civilized.  That's her word.  civilized. And you have, as she says, such lovely hair.". It's kind of funny how tabini hates the uncle so much. It's bluntly said that he needs to keep the uncle and jase separated.

Chapter 10

He goes back to check on the office and secretaries before the meeting and to try to check on jase. He is said he can't  be allowed to be around common aveti. The interview is kind of going okay about the spaceship. Deana is being a shit again and a quote is back "Banichi,my salad my truth". Direiso have had a hand in deana's kidnapping so that others could kill tabini and bren and she was gonna try to get her hands on jase and Yolanda but luckily they succeeded in the last book. Holy shit ilisidi is a badass.

Chaper 11

Bren tries to get banichi to help him get more info on the shit show. He is also understandably pretty cynical about the islands free press. Jago and banichi are with him. It's really awkward having to explain to a group of aliens about a conversation with a mother and her son. Jase is getting so many flowers that even the servants are wondering if they should cast them out. He is able to talk to jase who feels like a prisoner in the house and he would like to go to the ocean. Jase had to get used to not being on a ship and on a planet. Bren tells jase that to see the ocean he is to try to not upset the uncle coming to visit. It seems like talk of the ocean was good enough to motivate him to look forward to something. 

Chapter 12

Bren has to deal with a bunch of files and he is able to join jase for supper. He is surprisingly keeping it together and not relying on using jase as an emotional crush for him self. For some reason they are saying they do not have his mother in the hospital for some reason. He decided to call Sandra, an old flame to him. So it sounds like Sandra had a spider plant named Clarence and a djossi vine  named Louise. He tries to get Sandra to get him more info on what the hell is going on. Jago says The Boy from Dur tried to get to him again. Jago gets him to admit that he should have allowed her to shoot hawks in a way. He is told to sleep by Jago.

Chapter 13.

Bren is talking to jase while they deal with tomato sauce and hoping the uncle doesn't get hit with contraband. Jase is no shit detective nervous as hell. Bren tells him to stick to the children's language,  do what ever the uncle tells him and listen to what he is told. Tabini is revealed to like television, describes it as a world in a box. The television crew for the rebuilt artifact obviously gives jase the jitters, bren tells him to stay with his security like Dureni. Tabini and damiri are with the uncle tatiseigi. Jase makes a bit of a hiccup and surprise ilisidi is back. She comments that jase hair is now grown out and can talk a little bit better. Cendi is also there and its kind of funny how she hates the vase that is near the liles artifact from the second book. Ilisidi goes to where her grandson , the lady of the house and the uncle are. They are at the part and moving around while bren is advising Jase to avoid certain people and try to be calm. Ilisidi stop flirting with bren please. So it turns put that a human is on the phone.

Chapter 14

Oh Toby is pissed, also brens mom had a small heart attack and is going in for surgery. Toby really wants him back on the island. Well that phone call ended badly and jago was merciful enough to try to get a message and damiri suggests that the shit show on the island with Toby might be a trap. Jase kind of panics and tries to protect the uncle when a light bulb exploded. Ilisidi ditching him to try to patch up things for the uncle. Oh my God is he calling out the uncle for being a shit? How the fuck dude the kid from Dur keep finding them? He decided to try to write a card to the kid to try to get him to stop. He finds jase after he fails to get a contact from the spaceship he came from. Bren talks to him and notices that he is to no one surprise stressed as fuck. Baddissuni had gotten ill from the incident earlier. Okay so it sounds like bren is asking ilisidi for help.

Chapter 15

Okay so the wiring is being fucked around with. Poor bren, needing sleeping pills since the ask for help from ilisidi. Hey it sounds bren , jase , banichi , jago , tano and algini are going on a trip. Holy shit brens moms a batch that made him and Toby competitive even though Toby literally ran off to get married so that he would leave the family behind for his own. Like seriously lady no wonder why bren got issues. Wow his dependency issues might have been to his mother and barb might have been affected. Also they take a van to get to tabinis jet. Holy hell bren has more patience for jase then I do and sounds like Yolanda and jase both had to understand how the planes work. It took home a while to admit it but jase and him needed a break from all this shit. It looks like ilisidi 's 'young men' came to Greet them. The drive from the plane to was chaotic enough to make jase uneasy. Bren a bit grumpy they are on a mountain and is told to get out of banichis way. Their back in malguri baby, bad news is that the place looks like shit.

Chapter 16

Holy shit even after a book the place is still being slowly rebuilt. Well shit jase is going through what bren is going on in the first book. Finally jase snaps at him, but luckily cools down and apologizes. Bren tells the truth about why he has been asking him to trust him this way. Jase notices the mecheiti out in the yard of the mansion that they are going to have to probably go to the beach using them. Jase is still tense as hell. Ilisidi is at dinner with them and and is being annoying as ever. The kid from dur got to the mansion some how, like how the fuck is he tracking them.

Chapter 17

Everyone is just quiet while banichi is quote 'questioning' the kid, Luckily the dessert could be a bit of a distraction. Jase awkwardly asks about fishing and bren makes him go back to bed. He gets to ilisidi to apologize who is understanding. Bren is told by cenedi who tells him the dur kid says he has info that could threaten world peace. So the kid says he saw a plane around where he lived that had a female human speaking ragi . The boy is trying to be sneaky in a language kind of way but ilisidi was dangerous. So it sounds like the plane the human was on was going into trains so that she technically was not on land to send messages out. Holy shit she is ripping the boys to shreds and he knows he's breaking the law. First he stole his dad's plane, then he jumped hotel's to try to get to bren then he caught a train to get to the mansion. This kid pissed off ilisidi so much he makes jase look better. He talks with Jago who tries to reassure him. He explains to jase what's going on and manages to get a much needed chat. Great vehicles outside that kind of woke him up, it was just supplies. 

Chapter 18

They go out hunting with jase, jago, bren, ilisidi and cenedi. Jase is a little grossed out by the fish. Bren reveals he brought the gun that was a gift gift from banichi and tabini from the first book. Nokhada is back and he and jase are ready to go. She nearly injures him but he dose stop her with a riding crop. They ride for a bit with everyone and jase has to learn to sway with the beast, not be still. 

Chapter 19

Great ilisidi is being suspicious again. The boy from dur kind of makes a riding hiccup  but manages to be saved. They finally are at the sea of Dur. They make a came with tents made from the human island and plan to rest for the night. Jase is glad you finally be at the sea. The boy from dur rejiri joins in and talks to jase. It's kind of nice that bren, jase and rejiri are getting along. Well now I know ilisidi is in the 'wait your turn to kill deana hawks' line. The reason why the lilies were destroyed where to try to make bren look bad and deana look better in comparison. 

Chapter 20 

Jase asks about what bren was told. He visits the security and jago confess  they brought his gun he hid in the luggage. Banichi probably senses the problem between the two and decides to gaurd jase aka sleep with him to gaurd him, leaving bren with no bed. Wait is this scene of the bren-dose-the-deed-of-darkness-with-jago-in-the-tent scene? They did the thing, they totally did the thing. At least it was not as bad as alot other types or written sex scenes I have heard of. They use the rain outside to bathe, like how do they do that in cold water? WTF?

Chapter 21

Banichi woke Jago up to know about what the heck happened. Jase understandably is wondering why they were separated. Jase is upset about him being around jago. Oh shit ilisidi knows. He talks to jase about what he actually was going on and jase is pissed about being lied to. Jase is able to be okay for a moment. Jase manages to make bren think about how he might be not so different from the humans on that island with the concept of delusion. God I love this chapter. Cenedi ask him to visit ilisidi.

Chapter 22

Oh great ilisidi totally knows about what happened. He gets back to jase who thanks him for being honest. It turns put the situation is a way to distract others who may hurt those bren and himself are with to try to keep there enemy's on there tail. When they start running jase starts laughing for the first time. This was a moment that bren was hoping for him to have to make him feel better. 

Chapter 23

So they got to the destination  and a Stranger approaches them. So ilisidi went here to check out why the mail and communications were fucky. Well shit Toby did apologize for some of the shit he said. Holy shit he needed to calm down and those three jago jase and banichi are there for him. Well fuck Yolanda is trying to get there by herself through a storm on a boat , it also makes sense why he wanted to go to the ocean so bad. Bren understandably now has his moment of now being able to get mad at jase. He Is looking through his computer to fund out they laid off the foreign office to keep him from contacting anyone. Well let's just say I imagine rejiri being like "well well well I bet you feel stupid now for thinking I am useless.

Chapter 24

Now they are looking over maps to figure out where the hell Yolanda is. It turns out that jase didn't have a father , he had been born maybe through frozen sperm from a famous person who died for the people and he does have a mother Weirdly enough he was not a expendable crew member but an elite. thanks to brens kindness jase wants to make up for his lies. It turned out there was some code words that Yolanda was trying to tell him when shit went down. It turned out the ship only came to the planet when something happened to another one there knew. 

Chapter 25

He goes to the meeting and explains what jase told him so that they can hopefully negotiate. They finally get a message to the ship and talk. It turns out that the human government was so shitty that Yolanda tried to leave and they decided to stir shit to distract everything. They get to a town to meet up with lord geigi who was rather late much to ilisidi annoyance.  

Chapter 26 

Thank to geigi getting distracted by veggies he had to do some other shit. I can't get the thing out of my head of this scene of all these cool guys about to go into a fight in these prissy ass boats for like 7 to 8 foot people ( I think that's the size.)  He goes outside with banichi, jago, and jase outside and joke fir a little bit. When they tried to hide in the boat let's just say that somebody did not like boats. Jase bren and jago get stuck together and managed to get jago to safety with the gun. They are saved by the dur ferry.

Chapter 27

Rejiri is back and came to help. And manage to shoot down some of the assholes trying to kill them in boat's,. Holy shit the uncle might have fucking saved them and Toby Actully came by to see him. He brought Shawn,  Yolanda with him as well. Sandra did manage to get in contact that he wanted. And holy shit deana hawks might be dead.

Chapter 28

Lord Geigi got a longer boat and Toby's got his own boat. The idea that a pregnant Jill Toby's wife was spending some time with Shawn's wife throwing Shawn's eldest birthday party with tano and algini dealing with is just so cute. Gaylord Hanks can go fuck himself.  Everyone is okay for now. The government isn't filled with influencal pricks as there where and the family members can visit him when ever they can.

Hi , I have a question.

So do you have any ideas for ship fiction situations based around bren × his ashid , Bren x tabini and/or bren x ilisidi.

You see I was planing on making a fiction for you but I do not have a lot of ideas.

The only idea is this very nsft wet dream or just romantic dreams fiction of bren having dreams around tabini , tano , algini , jago , and banichi separately.

Any better ideas then the one I got?

Sexuality in Foreigner

Something that’s been rattling around in my head as I re-read the Foreigner series is the apparent lack of homosexuality in Atevi culture. But the more I think about it, how would we ever know? Bren postulates that man’chi might be related to sex and procreation but we have no proof of that. Yes, man’chi can exist between married couples, but it also forms literally all of the other reactions that Atevi have to each other, all their relationships in any form. If man’chi is more like the grouping instinct we see in our own animals species, there’s literally no reason it would be tied to sexuality. And Atevi literally never talk about sex and to ask about man’chi comes across as a challenge to said man’chi, so it’s pretty difficult to know much about the differences in Atevi sexuality.

Plus, so far, we’ve only had the perspective of a straight human and a pre-pubescent Ateva. Neither perspective is going to have much insight into the complexities of Atevi sexuality and at one point Cajeiri basically tells Bren he knows all about sex already in a completely nonchalant way. Bren, I think, assumes that sex isn’t talked about because it is embarrassing or the culture is sexually repressed, but what if it’s just not at all a big deal to Atevi? I’m thinking here of the moment that Jago is like “Hey, if you sleep with Barb, will she fucking relax?” and a few of the times that Banichi ribs Bren about Jago being into him and their sexual relationship.

So, what if there isn’t really the same kind of defined sexuality in Atevi? If man’chi can flow toward both male and female Atevi, isn’t it possible sexual attraction can too? It also makes the contract marriages make even more sense because it’s like “Yeah, we can just have sex with whoever but we’re only gonna have KIDS with certain people”. Sex is distinct from procreation. I also think that Atevi might be able to control when they are able to reproduce (that’s how the description Tabini gives of how Damiri got knocked up when they were running all around the place during the coup, one has to assume they had ample opportunity to get it on, but it seems like Tabini implies they made the decision to get her preggers).

Also, when Banichi is talking about Algini and Tano becoming partners, it seemed like he was saying they were what humans might call romantic partners. The bit about man’chi flowing from Algini to Bren through Tano. The undercurrent there seemed to imply a deeper relationship between Algini and Tano, at least to me. Additionally, we do have at least one Ateva that is at least strongly implied to be homosexual, with Geigi being described as uninterested in young ladies and therefore unlikely to have an heir. I mean, honestly, there’s a couple points where it straight up feels like Geigi is flirting with Bren.

But at the end of the day, maybe this is all moot because I’m too stuck within my own human perspective, unable to “grock” man’chi at the level that would allow me to understand and if I was talking to an Ateva they would just be like “ok, silly human, this literally doesn’t matter, please calm down.”

a fish story

Shortly after my sister moved in with me (i.e. before everything went to shit) a coworker offered me his fishtank. He was moving and couldn’t take it. I’d kept a number of betta fish before, quite successfully, but this was a step up--lights. heater, bubble filter, the works. All for free. Even for a ten-gallon tank it was nifty.

It definitely helped that I was working at the pet store at the time. (I’ve talked about that before.) I had a lot of coworkers able to help me out with how to make it work, and time to think through and build the tank up from empty, and a hefty employee discount. The general rule of thumb I was told, regarding aquariumsize, was “one gallon per inch of fish.” 

We got cobra guppies, because they were one inch each. 

I loved them. Slim and quick as bettas, but school-oriented instead of aggressive. Their tails grew in rings like a tree, and the longer we had them, the more rings their tails developed. We had five of them and could always tell them apart. We named them all for characters in the Foreigner series: Algini and Tano, Banichi and Jago and Bren. Bren was the smallest and plainest-colored, and was the most timid, and Jago-fish was the most attentive to him. It was very canonically pleasing.

When I left, the guppies were still going strong. The other denizens of the tank came and went. At different times, we tried keeping ghost shrimp and a rubber-nosed pleco to keep the tank clean. For a short period we had a red-tailed shark named Tabini, but he was harassing the guppies too much (which was also canonically pleasing, but not... good... pet ownership.) There was an era when we were both too stressed and depressed to do more than feed the fish and provide basic cleaning and water changes, and during that time the live plants in the tank erupted into a jungle. The fish didn’t seem to mind, but we didn’t see them too often, hidden in the foliage. It seemed like a healthy tank.

Stores out west were different than they are out here. In this region, I would never consider buying fresh produce at a Walmart. Ick! But the produce section of the Walmart out there was better than most of the produce sections in regular grocery stores here. And, weirdly enough, they had a substantial fish section.

(There was also a fish specialty store in town. I just remembered that. This grody, damp, dripping, cavernous place, pitch black except for the light of the tanks. The weirdest most delightful place.)

In Walmart’s fish section we found out about such a thing as a freshwater pufferfish. Little spotted blimp with goggle eyes and a crunchy beak like a parrot. I had to have one. We did our research, fudged our numbers, fussed with the temperature and the chemistry of the tank until it was within the acceptable living range for both guppies and puffers, and brought Prakuyo home.

Prakuyo ate the river snails that lived off the plants in the tank. The shells were an important part of his diet and useful for sharpening his little parrot beak. During the great jungle explosion, the number of snails in the tank reached 100+; in five days Prakuyo had cleaned out the lot and bumped around for more. I became one of Those People who came into the pet store saying “can you please just fill up a bag with snails?” 

You could hear him crunching. He was very friendly and attentive to things outside the tank in a way that the guppies weren’t. If you came in, he would follow you from side to side of the tank until you came over to feed him.

Big-little blob fish and his sleek shimmering companions. I don’t know what happened to them. I hope they lived good lives.

Precursor, by C. J. Cherryh

Kalinara: So, since I tricked Ragnell into taking two turns in a row to finish up Aftermath, this was my second turn. I decided to go back to one of the first series we started reviewing, and chose C. J. Cherryh’s Precursor. This is the fourth book of her Foreigner series.

So needless to say, none of this review will make much sense to anyone who hasn’t read the three books that came before.

Ragnell: Or at least the three reviews that came before.

K: Precursor starts three years after the end of Inheritor, and basically starts what I think of as the “Atevi In Spaaaace” trilogy. I’ll try to keep this synopsis short, as anyone who’s read Cherryh knows, her books tend to be pretty dense with content.

So by this time in the story, the Atevi have finished constructing their shuttles. And this means travel to and from the space station/ship is now a reality. The ship has recalled Jase and Yolanda, and as a response, Tabini sends Bren and his usual cohorts (Banichi, Jago, Tano, Algini) as well as a full atevi household (Bren’s status has risen in the world), up too, to set up the next stage of diplomatic negotiations.

Bren meets, however, a diplomatic quagmire. For all its urgency, the ship was NOT ready for the atevi, and a lot of strings need to be pulled to get things even remotely satisfactory. And then things go from inconvenient to downright dangerous when there is a coup in the highest ranks of ship government. Fortunately, Bren is not without recourse. And his guard are as effective as ever, even in these alien surroundings.

R: Honestly, how the hell didn’t see this coming sooner or later once the test flights went underway I don’t know. Tabini got his people to create spaceflight in three years. They should have at least expected he’d be asking soon, and that they should get some quarters ready for big aliens.

K: I think a lot of it may have been internal prejudice about primitive aliens. They see the Atevi, and they see a people who are still considerably more behind than they are technologically speaking. They don’t have any real appreciation of the way that Atevi have been able to use and innovate the Mospheiran technological advances (advances that eventually the Atevi would have been able to create themselves without help, just on a slower time scale), or how quickly they’ve come already. They also don’t seem to appreciate just how Tabini works as a leader. When he makes a decision, it happens.

As I mentioned, Bren’s status is considerably elevated. He’s finally figured out that he isn’t the ordinary translator/spy that he signed up to be. The story actually, finally, divorces his role completely from “translator” as a number of other characters with at least a workable command of the Ragi language are introduced. Both Tabini and Ilisidi show that they have resources outside of Bren, when it comes to simple communication with the humans on Mospheira. That said, Bren’s role is still vitally important.

Bren is Tabini’s diplomatic hammer, basically. And he is breathtakingly good at it. The four captains are the autocratic governing body of the whole ship, and Bren dictates terms to them. Bren also negotiates a completely separate business deal with the kinda-sorta-competing Mospheiran faction. (Bren has officially at this point made his break from the island. Apparently they do still try to pay him though.)

I remember the first time I read this book, I immediately went back and reread Foreigner. It’s a very similar feeling, I think, to watching A New Hope right after Return of the Jedi. Seeing Luke Skywalker back as that naive farmboy once you see him as the Jedi Master he becomes is such an amazing experience. He’s so adorable! This is, I think, Bren’s Return of the Jedi. There is no question that he’s a formidable force of nature, and possibly, in his own way, the third most powerful person on the planet (after Tabini and Ilisidi.)

R: Bren Cameron is one of only two people in any of the three factions who has experience mediating between humans and an alien species. (The other being the retired old paidhi Wilson, because Jase was still following Bren’s lead when he worked with the atevi.) In the situation this series has set up, that is a perfect comparison because he is basically a diplomatic Jedi. That is how rare that skill is and how necessary it is.

K: He’s not completely free of his anxieties though. There’s a truly lovely freakout scene early in the book, where he starts lambasting himself for enjoying having the fate of the world in his hands. The poor thing probably would still benefit from a therapist. Especially now that we’ve gotten a good look at his mother. The woman makes a physical appearance at the beginning of the book, and we see more of her personality through phone calls and letters. And she is terrible and incredibly manipulative. When I look at her, I start to suspect that a lot of Bren’s own diplomatic skills likely came about long before he met the Atevi, in sheer self defense.

R: He is being too hard on himself. Look, power is fun. That’s why it’s so corruptive. It’s fun to be the person someone needs to agree with and while that’s pretty much what led to the situation on the Captain’s Council first place that Bren enjoyed that scene so much proves he’s still human. Which he was worrying about last trilogy.

And really, it’s so much fun to watch. Usually we get these scenes on stuff like Star Trek with the uncooperative diplomat or politician and we see from the crew point of view. Here we see from the diplomat’s point of view, that he knows he’s being difficult and that this is part of establishing boundaries during negotiations. He feels bad about it with the rank and file personnel, and you feel a little bad for them too, but it is so enjoyable each time he puts the Captains in their place.

And then Ilisidi shows up, and it’s like he gets a power-up and gets to be ten times as loud and demanding and it is just so much fun to read. He goes from badass to Badass when she shows up.

K: At least he still has his relationship with Jago, which is so lovely and drama free. We also finally get an answer to the nature of Jago’s relationship with Banichi. Which likely adds a really interesting dynamic to Bren’s relationship with Banichi as well. Banichi is now Joe West, matchmaking his adopted son and his daughter.

R: That was just such a funny thing. And it’s not dropped for just nothing, it adds to the stressors during the parts of the book when Banichi disappears to well, be Banichi.

K: One of the things I think is really funny about this series is how each book ends up expanding on the factions and adding more division versus what came before. Like in Foreigner, we’re introduced to the humans and the atevi. Invader expands on that by introducing Deana Hanks and her Heritage Party as an antagonistic faction of humans. Inheritor is what introduces the Ship folk as their own faction, and Tatiseigi as a representative of very conservative Atevi.

Following in that trend, Precursor introduces a couple of new factions as well, and they’re all represented by new characters.

The first two I want to talk about are Tom Lund and Ginny Kroger. These two are Mospheirans, and introduced as members of the Heritage Party, who go up to the station with Bren. (Tabini’s idea, he likes symmetry and wanted Mospheira to send their own delegation when he sent Bren.) Bren particularly started off badly with Kroger, who seemed to exemplify her party’s closed minded attitude. However, once Bren and the Mospheirans unite against the increasingly bewildering behavior of the ship folk, he gets to learn more about them and the Heritage Party itself. Basically, the antagonists like Hanks and her father were only one part of the Party, while others joined because of other reasons: like the desire for independent scientific recovery and the push for space. Kroger, in particular, has personal ambitions regarding the rediscovery of robotics, which she believes will enable humans and atevi to engage in mining resources and other space-tasks with greater safety.

We have new adversaries though, in the form of Tamun, the fourth Captain of the crew, and his hardliners, who affect a coup against Ramirez, the leader of the Captains and the one we’ve encountered before (at least by radio), who is the one supporting the diplomatic relationship with the Atevi.

R: So far, Tamun is the most dickish antagonist we’ve seen. Which is why no one will miss him.

K: And then there’s Kaplan, who is introduced as Bren’s reluctant guide. Kaplan represents the everyman ship view (as opposed to Jase, who has a fairly elevated status, and also is off screen for most of the story as a victim of the coup). He is wary but ultimately curious about the Atevi, and it’s through him and crewmen like him that Bren is able to gain some social leverage, spread the truth about the coup, and make contacts throughout the ship.

Amusingly, we get a hint of Atevi politics as well. Bren’s elevated status has brought with it an official household (led by an esteemed old man named Narani, whose propriety and taste impresses even Ilisidi) and a prestigious apartment in the Bujavid, something that even some lesser Lords don’t have. Among his staff is a chef named Bindanda, who is both remarkably talented, and a spy from Lord Tatiseigi, a conservative Atevi lord who had been introduced in the last series. Everyone is well aware of Bindanda’s status as a spy, and try to accommodate that whenever possible.

R: Well, it’s not like he’s shooting up valuable artwork.

I love how bizarre the atevi seem to the crew in this way. Bren goes up there a lot more relaxed than an atevi lord would be, but clearly Tabini is presenting him as one. And that requires all this redecoration and accommodation that will definitely have to occur when the atevi take over the station and put whatever lucky lord gets to live in outer space up there. But the idea that there’s cosmetic adjustments to be made is just completely foreign to the ship humans, and they have no idea how lucky they are that Bren was sent up first with a polite staff before Ilisidi got up there.

K: In the midst of all of these events, we get some lovely worldbuilding moments. For example, Tabini has built an embassy for humans in Shejidan, designed (with input from Bren and Jase) to suit human tastes as much as possible. Meanwhile, we get to appreciate what goes into making the station quarters livable to Atevi (it reminds me a little of feng shui, though I am far too ignorant of the practice to make any real comparison.)

R: I don’t think the practice is too different from what we do for humans, just the details. They paint dentist offices in pastels so people don’t get upset. There are certain images you don’t put on the walls in public places. There’s a cliched type of motel and hotel setup so that everyone’s comfortable as they travel through. You don’t blast cacophonous music or have loud unpleasant noises in a waiting area. Certain smells are not good. Just for atevi, they need all of the numbers to be right in addition to the colors, sounds, and smells.

K: We also learn more about Ship culture: the emphasis on family (“cousins”, the fact that Ramirez’s children are in the command track, Tamun chooses his uncle to be a new Captain after the coup), a somewhat paternalistic attitude toward women, and a veneration for old women, which comes in very handy when Ilisidi comes in as the cavalry.

R: Yeah, Tabini had to have picked that reverence for old ladies up during incidental conversation and filed that away as a way of taking definitive and quick control before the Ship-Humans could know what happened.

K: I’ve said before that this is essentially the start of a new trilogy. Where the first trilogy focused on the interrelationship between Mospheira and Atevi, with the Ship as a catalyst, this trilogy is focused on space, with a special look at the ship humans and their interrelations, with Bren and the Atevi as catalysts. It’s only going to get more complex from here on out. :-)

thoughts on book 2 invader by c. j. cherryth

More of my notes as I try to read through this series. (as usual, reposing from pillowfort with spoilers and swearing.)

Chapter 1

The ship is droping down from the original shitshow with the characters of Bren comeing back to shejidan from his home country from sugery that he much needed. It seems like the aveti children learned about weapons instead of bikes. He tried to talk to his mother but she didn't respond while he was at the hospital. He was able to call his brother Toby with his wife and the government took the files and shit from his computers files. So yeah ribbons are part of the whole shabang with braids and status. He gets off the plane and luckily reunites with Jago and banini who even offer to carry him into the car when he is looking dizzy though he declines. His garden apartment is gone but he is now in neighbors with tabnini. Baji-Naji fortune and chance a common belief of aveti. Deana Hanks is another humon with a rough temper who rightfully earned the moment bren grew a backbone when she treated Jago like shit and threatening to get her arrested. Banichi is pissed with him. Deana was a rivel of his for the title and lost despite her ties with higher ranking friends for the paidhi title. The building is a rank 3 in security.

Chapter 2

The place called Atigeini has a cheif of staff named saidin and all of the staff are women. It sounds like the shit going on since the last book might have effected him more then he would like. Oh great six gust rooms including lady damiri's room. Banichi and jago offer to get the stuff he needs when he asks for some of his things because he is tired. Banichi is noticed to have a limp while the tour is going on. He is still dragged to the meeting.

Chapter 3

Tabini apartment is near where they are so it isn't that hard thankfully. It sounds like they both are similar in things like they like sports tabini likes hunting and bren likes skiing (might explain the love for snow) and we finally see tabini not in a damn flash back with Eidi bookworm maybe assassin, and damiri Tabini consort or wife. She also speaks up on her own, like she is the leader of the country and also sounds curious. Tabini was worried about the shit show from the last book and that touches brens heart. Bren tries to explain the shit show literally above their heads and bluntly explains the shit he went through right after the last book and right before he got there. God screw hanks and tabini would really like to shoot her. Well let's just say paranoia brings paranoia and tabini explains why this shit is so scary. Well hanks might be taking advantage of a indet lord by the named of geigi. They said turnabout ace attorney flash backs. God i love this interaction that they are having and tabinis granny is reveild to be here. Drops a tea.

Chaper 4 

Tabini being a bro for Bren. The ship is trying to check if the abandoned ship has anyone. The meeting reveiled that the stations are more litly firting then getting the avte involved and hanks if hopeing to use the shit show to get what she wanted. Tano is back and with the luggage and illsidi is back the aiji-dowager at least in scroll letter form for now. Oh so this is the part where jago offers to shoot barb his ex fiancée after she breaks up with him. Foreshadowing when he thinks bur doesn't hold onto the thought that the atevi saw him as a hero? Also is the conflicting double identity of human and atevi foreshadowing? . Accidentally tips a cup in the middle of the night and getting Jago to notice the noise.

Chapter 5

The damages have been managed to the best of the ability and holy shit the the storage of the list of the correspondences that hanks has is huge. Banini gets him some tea to a way to get the numbers of the records without people taking out numbers. The faster than light is kept under wraps due to superstitious reasons from the aveti. The recordings that tabini got paints the state of department being behind why they want Deana Hanks to fuck around and find out because of ideological bullshit between the humans on the planet and the ship. Banichi told bren that a message from deana was 'go-to-'elle' aka go to hell. 

Chapter 6

I forgot about the cast until the scene where he had to have duct tape wrapped around it so that he could use the shower. He give a speech about everything about the pro landers like him may point out that the conflict maybe why the ship and hanks is here before an assassin tried to get him, luckily Tano and Jago save him. He apologizes and forgets the mic is on. He gets some rest so that he can speak with Tabini's grandmother tomorrow.

Chapter 7 

He talks with ilisidi , cenedi for tea. Talking about everything getting fucked. She thinks brens ex fiancée is a dumbass for ditching him. Also quite literally calls herself a 'blood handed tyrant' in her rant about history. Cenedi tells him to talk about banichi who is having to deal with assassin Guild shit. Holy shit dose he care for Jago like she is over protective of him. He describe the place as a prison with those he cares for. He describes himself as tabini's property. Jago describes with a distress is ours like a collective. Went through the messages. Deana is just slamming the damn phone to avoid talking to him. 

Chapter 8 

Well shit dose this chapter hit close to home, the desire to attack others due to a superiority complex. Oh boy that really dose hit close to home about conservatives trying to get ride of info about atevi philosophy to children. Tabini gets informed on the shit.

Chapter 9 

He gets a message to the president about the offer about all the shit. Jago and banichi are missing probably due to the assassin Guild. faster then light or FTL is gonna be a real batch to deal with. Bu-javido security about tano's partner algini to guard him while Jago and banichi are Mia, they care about each other in a comrades way. 

Chapter 10

Jago back and helping him with his cast. He manages to get in contact with the Phoenix and explains the treaty and current shit show and managed to get negotiations. Banichi talks with him about hanks and talked about the shit. Hanks finally bothered to call him back, barb did message him , officials as well and ilisidi messaged him to see him. Banichi came in, told him about a gun that was smuggled into the room, the election going on at the Guild banichi is in and jago is back. The banichi salad joke is back when he said he liked tabinis granny. The pregnant calander for urgent meeting. He thinks of malguri from the first book mecheiti nokhada in a dream, also pointing out separating her from her herd an association that was stronger for atevi then humans. He is stuck on a hill in his dream with the beast and a figure trying to reach him. 

Chapter 11 

He gets into a phone argument finally with deana and gets her to have lunch with him. Cenedi , tano are with bren for breakfast and told him that they took down the desire to get him assassinated. Deana gives him the seal she was using to make false orders for him. Jago was probably listening in.

Chapter 12

A committee meeting is happening with geigi about the shit going down, what happened to him in the last book and trying to think of a way to explain FTL in a way that will not piss off the locals. Bren meets up with Jago and Banichi again and explains how the latter is worried about hanks. He starts thinking of looking for astronomers that might be around and banichi says yes he can do it. Sounds like aveti don't really have star lore due to them never domesticated food animals.  The find a rather old one who sounds rather odd and bren tries to explain stars. He calls Toby and a little bit to Toby's daughter and it sounds like brens mom does not like change. All of the human land seems to be silent to him all of a sudden and suddenly Is giving him flash backs to the last time people started avoid telling him anything. He called the ship that's making everyone panic and anounce to him that a representative named  Jason Graham from the space ship. He is summoned to the observatory the day after tomorrow by Jago. 

Chapter 13

Graham expressed his geeky Ness around languages and making bren petty the fact that this little academic is about to get dumped into a political shit show and worries about the human settlement is having on the crew. Jase says they might be worried about everything including the decent to the planet. He talks with tabini about the call with Jason or Jase about plans on protecting Jase. It looks like nepotism is kind of a thing. 

Chapter 14 

A bunch of reporters are talking to bren about the ship. He then goes reading and writing letters. Barb sends him a message as well as alot of other poeple. When he tries to write to ilisidi and asks for tano to give the letter to cenedi to read and instead he gets a letter from ilisidi herself. He then calls barb because he just realized that people are making threats to his loved ones and scaring them and that hanks dad is feeding the flames, it's also the same fear that made her break up with him and he understandably gets mad. Okay after having nostalgia of childhood with his mom and dad he tried to cut the cast of his arm but Jago tries to stop him, not really understanding why. He gets her to let go and help him cut of the cast, looks like there is a secret code from Shawn who might have know about the shit about to go down in a sheet of paper.

Chapter 15

He is worrying about Jago behavior after the talk last night after the cast. Has a heavy part about how there was no romantic interest in the machimi, reticence in it. He is also in a plane with tabini to go hunting with him. Poor tano and algini had to calm him down after seeing a game animal run in front of the train with bren admitting he missed malguri. The place where the astronomer is has some students want to see him. The astronomer emeritus obviously had to have no name even though he solves a nasty crisis of course that has to happen. The old man also forgets to eat. He has a dream that was about him and his beast trying to get inside with the scholars. He wakes up on the plane back to shejidan and thinks to Malguri. 

Chapter 16

He is back with Tabini's grandmother at her breakfast table with her trying to get him to eat after the cast was taken off. She calls geigi the melon why bren is worried for. Oh shit she sounds pissed and he leaves the room feeling like shit.

Chapter 17

He tried thinking through and start thinking about the stockpiling of metal and memories of his mother being worried about an accident while hiking. Saidin talks to him about things.

Chapter 18

He's alone at supper then get a call from barb who tells him what's going on with his mother. Hanks calls and actually  does not act horrible, right before some thing happens that gets her attacked on her end. He get others to help and banichi managed to keep him from getting shot. One of tabinis guards baighi is dead and Hanks had been kidnapped great, right when they were not assholes for two seconds.they are now trying to figure out who could have done this.  Grigiji . Oh boy is lady damiri pissed at the damages and the shit going down, also tabini having to calm down his wife was amazing. He suspected some things were bad.

Chapter 19

Bren gets a talk with Jase and practicing the language. After talking about Jase tabini asked a bit about him. Banichi talks with him about who could have caused the kidnapping and what is so risky about bren trying to help with with a gun. In the last chapter. Holy shit it sounds like banichi rejected him in a romantic advances thing. They also took hanks computer. He has to go to taiben to fetch Jase. 

Chapter 20 

The plane is landing. Bren is with banichi and there is a chance that saidin might have something to do with everything. Jago catches up with them with them and gets info dumped about the history of the land. Tabini might have sent them there to go after hanks and Jason. He may have been betrayed by hanks also fuck the heritage party.

Chapter 21 

He is at the mansion where it looks like the stuff from the first book made it there. Bren decided to play darts with banichi before banichi tells him he should rest. He bonds over with tabnini over relatives. He also offers bren to bring his relatives over to the main land to protect him from everything, he asks tabini to let him think. Jago and him make up from the weirdness. They realize the rebels had hanks and probably where near by.

Chapter 22

They go into the storm shelter that hanks might be in. Holy hell the shoot outs are a ton here. Great now there's a fire and like fifteen mecheiti riders that belong to ilisidi with her riders, cenedi, Babsidi , geigi and they got a pissed of hanks. Sidi was behind the attack and tabini got into a argument with his grandmother after she was made he made her leave for her own safety. They see the thing Jase is in and heads towards it.

Chapter 23

It ends with bren meeting with the two humans that were in the shuttle for some reason and hanks being a batch in the back round.

*I saw Yolanda in this book and she sounds important.

So how did #15 change your mental picture of the Guild?

so while it became apparent that guild administrators had power, there was no perception of them having power for many many years, the reaction to shishogi was "holy crap a pencil pusher did all this???"

but in general i think all members of the guild downplay what power they have, i think the ban on guild aiijiin is something most of them hold pretty close. which makes me wonder what the guildmaster's actual powers are--I can't think they are many! certainly not like tabini's where when he decide to do something it just fucking gets done. I think by and large the guild votes by council or as a body on most things; the guildmaster might have have, like, the power to call to general vote (ie why the hearings on whether or not to accept Intent Filed on Bren back in like, book 2, took forever and ever, guildmaster refused to call to vote until the body turned the direction he wanted). I'm thinking the guildmaster might have some kind of veto power, but even that shouldn't be absolute, it might be the kind of veto that can be overturned with, what are felicitous fractions, like, a 5/7 majority? (I imagine that these powers are ones that could be handed over to a designate if the guildmaster is unable to attend a meeting, that kind of thing does exist in atevi culture, bren speaks as tabini because he has tabini's seal, Dur might send the son to sit in the legislature a season, etc)

but i'm so imagining guild votes right now where the guildmaster holds his vote like Gregor Vorbarra--like most of the time it's an abstention, and it's a big fucking statement when it's not.

seriously tho the guildmaster is not an aiji of the guild, like i think the fact that "he ACTS like he's guildmaster, you don't DO that" was one of their justifications to kill an upstart at Tirnamardi was not just the secrecy factor, the acting like a guildmaster to outsiders, it was that in general the guildmaster is supposed to have some humility and not act the aiji. And turn aside any offers of personal man'chi to be like, man'chi to the institution, to the law, to justice.

in any case, i remain convinced that algini is the once and future guildmaster, for all of my previously stated reasons, plus the following three from book #15:

jago, unprecedentedly, names three other people whose survival is more critical than Bren's. Those three names are Cenedi, Banichi, and Algini. Cenedi is Eastern; it's extremely doubtful he could have ever run the Guild in Shejidan. We recently learned of Banichi's history that up until Tabini requested him, he was stuck in the shit jobs run by Assignments due to his bad break-up with Haikuti, so rule him out for head of Guild, not enough influence until outside influence came into play. That leaves--Algini. And honestly I sort of wonder if she brought up Cenedi and Banichi as shell game, and as "gods unfortunate he knows banichi's injured let's just use it and direct his tendency to throw himself in front of his own security in a way we can at least predict."

(and Cenedi wasn't with their group so it's hard to argue there were other people she wasn't mentioning for that reason)

then also the fact that the guild upfront admits to playing shell games with its guildmaster, that the council will switch seats when an outsider is present so you can't tell who's what. but you know the thing about a shell game, right. when you're playing against a proper con artist, the stone isn't under any of the shells.

and then, when they have to get a message in person down to the guild about the investiture, and Algini's going to go, Banichi is like TAKE 4 OF CENEDI'S MEN, better the aiji's floor of the bujavid should be short 5 than that algini, an assassin in his own right, should walk alone and unguarded through Shejidan.

I just. You know, let's blame the fact that Banichi has recently lost a lot of blood for him doing that in front of Bren. sometimes i'm like oh god dudes, i know you're hanging onto plausible deniability but it's fucking paper thin.

but in things i've said before:

the idea that leaders have to show up means it makes sense to me that the guildmaster would be on active duty, that you can't have seniority and precedence without being on active duty. I mean, yes also, he can't be aiji, there is a line to walk there, but in a sense active duty works that way as well, that the guildmaster is just like everyone else in the rank and file of the guild.

Notes From Book 8 Pretender

from October the 11 of this year

Wait the fuck, this had 11 chapters? on the libby app there is 451 pages , like 200 pages shorter then the usual ones.

Bren looking upon the destruction of the house from where the last book left off. there is so many holes in the house.

Jago asks if he is okay as he finds his computer where he hid it . She even looks a bit worn down.

He smells like human sweat she smelled like petroleum .

They are trying to clean up the wreak that happened in the end of the last book

He asks Jago to check a chair for anything dangerous.  Luckily it is not.

The shit show has not been resolved so now there is only 3 points of power , the usurper, the guild , and the people. 

The situation may have caused the taiben and Atigeini to work together. A rarity 

He wants to get the report to tabini as soon as possible despite how tired he is. 

Tano and algini are about to try to get him to use the bath when they hear shouting 

It's cenedi who is probably pissed about how the security is not up to date and lack of it.

It turns out that tatiseigi is so tech avoiding that he lacks an understanding how even technology has changed.

Also tabini is trying to get it through tatiseigi thick skull about the shit show.

The argument is finished and tabini has gone to a bath before bed.

Bren wants to get the report to tabini to maybe make him feel better because he blames himself for all of this.

Bren gets a little dressed and meets some of tatiseigi staff timani and andaro who treat him and jago like assholes.

He gose to the bath and takes some stuff with him he dose not trust tatiseigi staff with them. Jago joins him soon after.

Jago kind of embarrasses a timani the servent that brought towels and was startled by the scene of Jago in the tub.

Jago and been are just so perfect for each other. Also he gives her a little kiss on the forhead before she tries to figure out where his clothes are gonna be.

Damiri shows up and asks about Brens encounter with the servants. She also praises bren for taking care of their son caljeiri despite her probably sadness at not being with him for two years.

Well she dose tell bren that if there is anything then ask timani .

Sounds like she was a bit if a prankster like caljeiri front what bren hears.

Bren gets embarrassed and when banichi brings up the fact that damiri probably dose know about his and jagos arrangement. 

When bren us worried about how jago might be affected banichi points out that it would more likly affect tatiseigi staff , not his staff. Bren appreciates this and says that he shall try to deserve banichi . 

He gets dressed for the day.

He gets ready to report to tabini and to try to avoid pissing of tatiseigi as well.

Timani is a little uncomfortable around being bruised and scratched up human skin and asks if bren needs to be bandaged up 

The room is being cleaned up as well by the staff who are trying to make up for the discourtesy of tatiseigi 

He gets banich to send a message that he could like a meeting with tabini as soon as tabini can allow.

Jago is back and tells him that cenedi us planing of where to go if the shit hits the fan.

They have a nasty scare around a plane flying over head , luckily no bomb were dropped. 

Oh shit has the boy from dur come back? 

Rejiri from dur is back and oh boy is bren happy to see him. He came to tell them his father is bringing some army to help them

The reason why the dur are more then happy to assist is because there are laws and taxes that have effectively pissed the dur. He also would loved to hear about there adventures in space. 

Caljeiri really likes poeple who do exciting shit like fly a plane over head.

Ajuri and edi clans are gonna be coming this way. 

Tatiseigi agrees to the help of rejiri. Ilisidi really wants caljeiri to not be near that plane.

He gose into meeting with tabini , ilisidi and damiri

Bren is sad that tabini is not calling him "paidhi-ji" and calls him lord of the heavens.

So the hill men really so not want to deal with flatland politics.

Oh shit pretender title drop through damiri 

When bren tries to escape the verbal fire tabini grabs his arm and gets a little to close.

The kadigidi are so dame stubborn about change they do not know what to do about the numbers of the university computers they confiscated. 

Bren blames himself for the whole shit show , again . Also kind or realizes that him ignoring the cultural worries may have made things worse. 

Bren tries to bring back moderation into the situation,  luckily tabini lets go of his arm.

Welp at least tabini is defending him from ilisidi getting mad about him.

Damiri gets tatiseigi to chill the fuck out , thank goodness. Also tabini tries to ease brens shoulder he may have bruised a bit. He even let's bren go to check on his son while he tries to keep the household from falling apart from the argument. 

Oh boy caljeiri is trying to find a house fuel tank. Uh oh. So they decided to go to where the house fuel tank it.

Poor banichi trying to advise that little shit caljeiri . Luckily banichi was a teacher that he respected and listens to his warning 

Rejiri is just getting some fuel for his plane.

Caljeiri obviously would like to use the plane , jago says a gentle form of like hell you are.

The buses of allies are here. And oh boy us tatiseigi gonna be pissed about the buses are gonna be on the grass.

Caljeiri is pissed enough at the disrespect of bren being mistaken for a foreigner and not the paidhi that he steps on the foot of the offending old man

Bren tries to get between the incoming fight between caljeiri and the lords. Luckily banichi makes them have a truce.

Bren apologize and makes caljeiri apologize to the lord 

Banichi and jago bring him comfort in a awful world.

He goes into the conference with the other factions including the guy who pissed off caljeiri by the name of benedi

Bren pretty much thinks that what humans would call poeple who's man'chi did not flow upwards psychopathic personality 

Bren starts worrying about the guild because there has been no update on the situation. 

What probably make the shit show so hard on tabini was because the new staff were under prepared or have divided loyalties to him. Also he is probably grieving the loss.

Okay now they are getting to plan food by tatiseigi 

Bren is worried about the status about him and tabini.

Damiris sister meisi and her aunt and cousin deieja

The cousin is so tiny.

When bren asks for a phone to maybe call the guild he is almost shot down. Luckily tabini,  ilisidi and damiri defend his advice. 

He is a little worried at being dismissed by tabini to his plan to try to get to shejidan to present the evidence of shit.

Caljeiri explains to bren his father is mad at the ajuri then anything.

They plant to go there with his staff who note that murini is getting clans to where they are and the staff at where bren is are a bit overwhelmed by the new guests.

Caljeiri makes the not so dumb decision to ask some advice from damiri. 

Bren tries to explain that poeple are blaming him for everything going wrong. caljeiri tells him that ilisidi praises him . bren is a little worried about talking to an eight rear old about politics

rejeiri the group plan to try to get into contact with ilisidi and plan a bit for the where they can go.

bren tries to make a report of what has happened and bemoans that the he had no landlines to contact anyone on the island.

he talks with algini about everything and says that everyone probably detests him being there . 

algini dumps the salad reference . bren is also stunned at algini calling him aiji-ma and not what he is used to being called. bren is stunned before caljeiri interrupts them.

antaro and jegari are able to get some food from dinner. bren tells algini that he can acompeny the youngsters but caljeiri can't

the sound of hammers repairing tatiseigi house can be heard. 

banichi is working on a side wiring project and tells of the good news about the lords being done with supper. 

oh shit the sound of guild vehicles have arrived. might have arrived due to brens letter.

caljeiri is so over protective of bren for all he has done. aww. also timani is pissed with caljeiris shit , like ears burning.

oh shit gegini and the vehicles might be serious trouble. sounds like gegini is running the guild show.

he makes caljeiri leave him and stay around ilisidi to deal with the shit outside the mansion. banichi also advice on what caljeiri can to escape.

they go to the meeting and tabini invites bren to sit with him much to brens worry.

tabini and tatiseigi are pretty pissed about the guilds delayed help to this whole shit show.

ph boy gild maybe you should not call tabini a former aiji , even after all he has been through while he is surrounded by others who are pretty pissed by your actions and loyal to him still.

ilisidi is okay with caljeiri moving in to her room while the guild takes his old room. 

everyone grigiji astronomer emeritus is back with everyone. thinking we have heard or seen the last of him I am sure. he also obviously wants to see ilisidi and bren because of course space stuff .

thw guild are pissed at grigiji popping up unannounced . poor guy.

the plan to have a meeting with grigiji to talk about the voyage ilisidi and bren had.

they also want food.

banichi are going to a meeting but bren is worried that something seriously bad is gonna happen.

bren gose back to his own room tano and algini are waiting with weapons because of curse shit might go down.

jago gives bren his computer like some bad shit is gonna happen.

jago used the computer to explain the gegini , two of his lieutenants and a few others are outside and that ether A the old guild master is dead or B this is an unauthorized mission.

gegini is of madi clan and padi valley men

she praises his actions for sending that letter to his shock because he did not know it was important for him go get a reaction out of gegini.

one of the red flags is like hell anyone would proclaim them selfs a guild master in public.

bren has alot of stuff to worry about and gegini is probably gonna try to fuck over everyone here in the building and take everyone down.

oh shit this whole shit show could have to make everything get finessed

bren is worried about everything and is blaming himself.

they get out of the room to maybe some where else in the house. he is also gonna try to get a hoster so that he dose not try to shoot himself in an embarrassing and fatal way when he gets his gun back.

oh fuck, there is an explosion a floor down.  jago and bren get the fuck out

there is a plane and maybe bren hopes a decoy or to safey for tabini or damiri

he is running with jago , tano and algini running the fuck out.

he is in the forest with algini , jagi and tano and soon some vehicles.

okay banichi is back with a whistle of jago

its kind of funny that jago has to kind of man handle him while they are escaping

oh shit banichi and his crew took them down and they are going to shejidan 

calejiri is here on the bus with him.  ilisidi and tabini are in not the same bus for safety reasons 

Holy shit tabini is in a plane that has 9 cenedi crafted gasoline bottles with rejiri to drop on anyone who tries shit.

Brens worried about the legality of dropping bombs from a plane. Luckily jago tells him that it is only an option but not what tabini is gonna try to do.

Holy hell those guild member wanna best are fucking dead and that fucking over confidentiality fail that badly.

They are going to try going to refeul their buses at the train station before before going to shejidan. 

Bren thinks about how tabini didn't consult him 

the atevi are gunning towords tabini and potential death and he is gonna be dragging in.

The buses belong to the dur . 

Oh fuck cenedi , tatiseigi and ilisidi are in a open car . Oh godamn are they gonna be a distraction and have a moment with tatiseigi "like old time"?

Bren makes rejiri father , adigain , to keep up with ilisidi,  who is thankful of the honor of him being an associate of his son. 

They follow in pursuit of ilisidi car and bren if fucking anxious about the household of tabini dying.

Ilisidi makes a fucking announcement essentially declaring war on murini , dear God.

He asks algini to clean his gun before the real shit show begins. 

Bren gets a bit scared and curious of algini . Also thinks that algini had a personal grudge on the usurper of the guildmaster.

Tano advises him to stick behind them because he is practically is a walking target. 

They get to the station to refuel. Caljeiri tells bren they could try to convince his grandmother and the others to try to not die.

Bren rightfully tells bren to not try anything that he could get in trouble. Caljeiri sulks

Great tabini has to try to find the damn car .

Turns out ilisidi got ahead so they are going to be trying to fuel up when they can.

So it turns out that tabini managed to get some informants from the guild to keep most of the fire from what they pulled off 

Oh shit bren may not have fucked up as badly as he thought,  thanks to ilisidi being back not only do they have some of their allies they already have but the east that is ilisidi and murini is waist deep in shit of his own making.

Cenedi is now with them.

Still in the busy car. And oh my got jago just fucking says he is trying to fucking sleep.

Takes a little nap before being awoken to gun fire.

Banichi keeps bren down and lectures caljeiri gaurds for not protecting caljeiri 

Been and caljeiri try to go back to sleep when the bus acts funny. 

Turns out the station they nearly got a refuel at was booby trapped and almost got them.

Jago and banichi are sleeping. Caljeiri finnaly managed to finally run out of energy.

Bren thinks a bit about his time in space while trying to sleep.

Jago letting bren rest while they are near the ragi center. 

When bren is shaving his stubble chin caljeiri wonders if bren could grow a beard but bren can not due to court would be scandal. 

Well they are gonna get on a train from there buses to try to confuse their foes.

Bren thought of the poor suffering staff and edi as fuel against murini .

Bren and everyone gets on the train and finally find ilisidi and tatiseigi there and sipping tea. Also tatiseigi got a bullet in his arm. 

Holy hell damiri is with tabini and rejiri. Ilisidi also praises bren for keeping an eye on caljeiri. 

Well there was attempt at assassination but that thankfully averted. 

Oh shit is murini gonna try to flee from the capital?

They see the plane outside the train. Also they see that rejiri have a fiancée named aigino.

It's funny that through all this chaos they are eating like dinner is going on.

The guild has acknowledged the authority and murini is trying to flee to some of his allies 

Tano and algini are gonna have to go with ilisidi to try to take back Bu-javid and are gonna have caljeiri be with bren. Bren is sad but understanding 

They all get sent to the engine and there tabini is waiting . He hugs bren and caljeiri.  

Damiri is with her father and ahuri with the buses. Bren has a shocked reaction to the situation he is in.

Rejiri is above the ship keeping an eye out for them.

Bren is with tabini , banichi,  jago and caljeiri plan to what to do next.

Murini might have made it look like he is fleeing to keep them from trying to look for him.

Caljeiri is worried his grandmother does not know he is with tabini , he is informed she knows.

Caljeiri is still worried for his gaurds , jago reminds him they are not his human associates from the space shuttle author and Gene

Tabini shows caljeiri how to carefully go into a tunnel. 

They go to the train tunnel under the city with tabini , caljeiri and bren. 

Bren is told to stay with caljeiri and bren gets caljeiri not not try to protect his dad.

Jago gets bren and caljeiri to come along with her .

They get to the halls that tabini wants the invite everyone there.

Bren realuses that he is not on the shuttle and thinking he is has caused him to be paranoid. 

They might be home and buses are coming.

Damiri is here. Brens staff if there and caljeiri.

Bren finally gets a much needed bath 

Jago and ilisidis servants help bren

Murini may be dead after his plane crashed . Not one pities him.

His staff whant him to go to bed and banichi menchion the salad reference  .

Cenedi has to rest because he has been done in , only rests because ilisidi says so.

Banichi blushes when bren praises him.

The old guild master is alive and back in power.

Banichi can tell that he has so many questions him.

Banichi really wants bren to go back to bed.

Bren had a really weird ass dream and jago eventually joins him.

Bren kind enough to ilisidi staff that the servant is so damn happy. 

Damn those letters must have been such a bitch to deal with.

Caljeiri is gonna have a rough time trying to hide the human behavior he gained on the ship.

He attends a bit of a meeting of ilisidi and tabini. 

Bren finally prints those damn papers. 

Jago gets him to sleep and tano and algini will see him in the morning after dealing with some intents.

Tano and algini do arrive in the morning to bren.

Bren is hoping yo print the papers and images they got . The images are gonna be in black and white though .

Bren oh my god don't you dare worry , don't you fucking dare.

Moni and taigi are back and thinner then ever. 

Oh shit they are acting suspicious so bren gose to banichi,  cenedi and jago to warn them.

Ilisidi is a little mad at moni and taigi. Bren tries to defend the over worked staff.

They head off for the meeting

Bren gives the report to the meeting.

Bren thinks about that assassin that went into his room that night in the first book that started this all.

Aw damn it there is another damn shoot out.

Luckily nothing bad happened again. Tabini resumes like nothing happen.

Caljeiri standing up for him , that little badass. Bren thinks of the man'chi and thinks that maybe humans do have that.

Good fucking christ this chapter is filled with so many quotes. 

Bren gose back to the apartment they are staying at 

Bren is so damn happy at being called bren-ij
