Corvus → Corvinus → Corvin
Tumblr media
So I found something interesting related to J & A's surname the other day while I was looking up Roman naming conventions so I thought I would share: (I double checked with Aelsa (@lacunafiction) to make sure it was ok to share this information I stumbled upon).
The surname Corvin seems to have had an interesting origin story. The name comes from Corvus (Raven) in Latin which would eventually evolve into Corvinus and from there I assume Corvin (just as Octavius can become Octavian). Corvus → Corvinus → Corvin.
So the name Corvus seems to have started out as a Roman cognomen, which is an extra name the (male) Romans commonly had that came after the family name, this was sometimes something like a nickname or to help narrow a particular branch of a large family or sometimes to note where the person came from (Germanicus etc). However there were also what was known as cognomen ex virtute which were “awarded” for bravery, winning battles, or in the case of Corvus, random acts of (a) god. Cognomens would sometimes eventually become family names, or the surname instead.
So the story is the name was awarded to Roman military commander Marcus Valerius, for a military campaign he participated in against the Gauls. Legend is a very large Gaul warrior challenged for anyone in the Roman army to fight him in single combat and Valerius got permission from his superiors to fight the Gaul. As the two men faced each other a raven flew down from the sky and landed on Valerius’ helmet and then proceeded to fly at the Gaulish man, distracting him and allowing Valerius to win the fight. The Roman army then also quickly won the following battle and Valerius was supposedly awarded various things among the cognomen Corvus for his bravery, now making his name Marcus Valerius Corvus. Some of his descendants eventually started using Corvinus as their surname to denote their branch of the family separately from the other branches of the Valerius family.
There is of course lots of speculation on if the story is actually true or not, but I thought it would be interesting to share the legend behind the name of our Darling Detective (and family). I found the story pretty cool after all.

Look, I will flirt and shyly be receptive to A if it means getting a reaction out of all my LIs. I’m currently living for R’s reactions around A lmao I’m off to see the differences with everybody else!

JOGO DE QUADRIBOL: CorvinalXSonserina
SONSERINA MARCA O PRIMEIRO PONTO DO JOGO.
Cat e Nick lado a lado – CATARINA MCKENZIE PEGOU O POMO! A SONSERINA GANHOU!

I’m weirdly psyched that the bookstore comes up again so soon. I’m not sure if my MC feels any particular attachment, but I’d love to let A take it over, if they want. They’ve probably run it single-handed before. Or I could at least let them and S have a go at it for picking out books and cafe stuff they’d like to keep. Who wouldn’t want an espresso machine?
Hi Anon,
It's awesome that you're psyched about Turn the Page coming back up again! 📚 There are a lot of dots/mentions in Book One that will be connected or further built upon throughout the series, so it excites me that you're considering your MC's attachment to the store. It did hold some sentimental value to them as a child, but your feelings and level of involvement will be shaped by choices/scenes/dialogue.
There's actually quite a bit of variation!
A would also love if you let them take it over again. 🥰 They had a lot of fun in the bookstore: creating latte art, baking treats, and engaging with people. It suited them! It's sweet of you to consider S, especially given their bond with the TFS grandfather. They could help with the variety of books, possibly finding some through thrifting/antiquing or organizing them for readers. Mrs. Dorran might help decorate. 👀
I will tease a little from the ✨second alpha drop✨ (July 6th) on TFS Patreon, but this scene is choice and relationship dependent:
The 'shop' as in Turn the Page, the bookstore cafe that was one of your grandfather's passions. Allowing A to resume their former role at the store was an easy choice before they even tried to nervously pitch the topic to you. Excitement was clear in their voice, causing them to crease and shuffle their prepared note cards about how they wouldn't mess things up. Your soft spot for them would likely have overruled the presentation, but they did show you a list of ideas, plans, and financials. (You had a feeling J assisted with the last part… Would A price-out items? No.)
A. Corvin is adorable, and they could also teach the MC some neat tricks with that espresso machine. 🥺💛 Thank you for your ask!

Happy Birthday A. Corvin!
A. Corvin Insights
In honor of our dollop of sunshine’s birthday, I gathered some insights about them.💛 You all have a few chances to interact with them in Book One; however, there will be more scenes in Book Two to get to know A better and shape that relationship dynamic. 🥰
Birthday/Star Sign/Celtic Sign
March 4th, Pisces. ♓ Ash (The Enchanter)
Considering they are the youngest Corvin child, were they spoiled at all?
Hmm, yes and no. The Corvins are an interesting family, a very rigid, principled, and dutiful sort, so their children were taught responsibilities along with a need to help around the farm. That being said, J was actually the one to dote on A more so than their parents. (We will get into why this is later on!) Not being as wild or chaotic a spirit as their sibling, naturally made J want to shoulder extra responsibility and to take up for them, if something went awry.
(Like if someone were to theoretically be caught in the hayloft or someone kind of broke the well by accident.)
To continue reading insights about A. Corvin, including how they view the other characters in Fernweh, view the full, public TFS Patreon post: here. 💚🌲

So I have a question. J's sibling is not a Ro, right? I noticed they seem to be a bit attracted to the Mc though? Or am I wrong?
Hi Anon,
I hope you're doing well! A isn't a RO within TFS, so you are right about that aspect.
This ask relates to one: here, but I will add that A can be attracted to the MC if you make a choice for them to have a crush on the MC. :D
This^ is only possible with a positive/idolized past history. 💛😌 It's been fun writing the various dynamics with them; there are many unique scenes in Book Two depending on how you played Book One.

mc to j: our child's name is Goldie
J, after glancing between the MC and Goldie for a moment: She has your, uhm, she's soft like you...? 😳
The way J would take this^ a little too seriously is precious. A would joke by saying it's bring your kid to work day every time Goldie and the MC stop by the station for a visit or a lunch date. They would be supportive in most cases since they think a pet would be good for J.
I'm actually surprised that no one has tried to drag J about this name, possibly because they were trying their best and it's cute. XD
Best wishes! 💚

*MC pats B on the back* If you marry A and I get married to J that'll make us like, bestie-spouse-sibling-in-laws or whatever its called!
B almost choking on their chocolate milk causes your encouraging pat on the back to become a bit more forceful until they quiet down.
"We—we've been on, like, two (2) double dates so far??"
"Yeah, but it'd be cute," you reply with a mischievous smile. "What are your thoughts on Worvin versus Carrick? J seems to favor the latter."
Your smile only widens as B gives you a dumbfounded stare.
_ _ _
The MC and I are joking around. Ohmygosh, that would be adorable!
Imagine if B was the MC's maid of honor/best man and then the MC adopts a similar sort of role for when B gets married to A, assuming B survives J's shovel talk. Also, if they're okay with marriage, etc. 😌

Is J's sibling friends with W? For some reason A gives me a creepy/intriguing vibe, same as W. Also A mentions getting food from a friend while holding the diner bag.
Hello Anon,
Hmm, what an interesting connection you made thanks to the extra cookies A got from the Fernweh Diner. 👀🍪 (Honestly, maybe we should let the W's creepy/intriguing vibe slide if they keep making oddly perfect hot drinks and give out treats to certain people.)
The sunshiney one 🌞 being friends with the dangerous, mysterious one 🚩? Hmm, we will have to see what the future holds, but I find your take on A to be really unique. They can be a little energetic; you will learn more in Book Two.
Best wishes!

Oh no I've been going feral over A and how adorable they are from the beginning don't enable me 😱😱 your honour I love them 😭 the outfit,,,,,the way they're watching for you to come back down on the crushing library route,,,,the near collision with the statue,,,,, pleASE 😭
Hi Anon,
Oh, you're already getting attached to them? Perfect! 💛 c:
I'm so happy that you find them adorable, especially when they have that cute crush on the MC. I admire how true to themself they are; it will be fun to see more of them in future books. It will be even more fun to see how the past history choice influences how A may chime in on the romances or voice their opinions on certain pairings.
(Could their be some shipping or sinking for J (don't get me started on JR; it's going to be so interesting in Book Two)? Possibly.)
Thank you for your ask; you brightened my day!

Is A an ro?
Today is A. Corvin's Birthday! 💛🎂 There will be a post/link about them with some interesting character insights a little later on.
Hi @superladywonderland,
I hope you're doing well! 💚
I'm glad that you're curious about A. Corvin. They seem to have made an impression on quite a few readers and will have more scenes in Book Two. They aren't a RO. Readers can choose to let A have a crush on their MC or even let them have a crush on B with the possibility of the MC matchmaking, discouraging, or staying out of it.
I can tease and say they can become more involved and invested on certain routes depending on your prior choices (e.g. the JR route or a J route with a strained dynamic with A among other combinations.)
I have an ask that relates to this: here.
Best wishes! :D

Is A also an RO? I thought the description said there was 5, so I counted B, S, R, and J. I also assumed the W was one based off their gender changing with MC preference. But picking A’s gender and dynamic with the MC made me curious. I’ve only done B and R’s routes but I love the game <3 I’m asking for ruby’s hand in marriage
Hi Anon,
Asking for R's hand in marriage is quite sweet! 🥰 The difference in B's and R's routes would make it fun playing them back to back. :D
As for A, you're right that there are so many different dynamics to trigger with them from an enamored crush to playing matchmaker to even being downright cutting with each other. They aren't one of the romance routes within Book One, but you will be able to spend more time with them in future books. 💛 I’m curious about reader sentiment regarding them; I’ll keep a watch on it too.
I hope you have a lovely day/night!

Happy Birthday Everly! 🎂
I was trying to decide (my Fernweh Saga MC) Everly's birthday awhile back ago using this post and this one as a guide, so I decided to try making a timeline, or well, listing the birthdays in order of age anyway.
(The years are just for examples, NOT canon).
So, in order from oldest to youngest (removing Ms. Verner and Mrs. Dorran because I have no idea of their ages):
Mal: May 26th (????-1999), Gemini. ♊ Hawthorn (The Illusionist)
J: July 2nd (1999), Cancer. ♋ Oak (The Stabilizer)
R: November 22nd (1999), Sagittarius (the Scorpio-Sagittarius cusp). ♐ Reed (The Inquisitor)
S: February 8th (2000), Aquarius. ♒ Rowan (The Thinker)
Everly: February 29th (2000), Pisces. ♓ Ash (The Enchanter)
B: October 17th (2001), Libra. ♎ Ivy (The Survivor)
A: March 4th (2002-2003), Pisces. ♓ Ash (The Enchanter)
R got the year before S and MC simply because generally that late in the year, if R was born the same example year as the MC (2000), R would have ended up in the school year/grade under MC because the birthday cut off date is usually August or September iirc (if they are in the USA anyway), and if I'm not mistaken they are meant to be in the same grade school year as both S and MC. So keeping them in the same grade got priority over keeping their birthdays in the same year.
I also have it on good authority (I asked the author and got permission to share the answer) that A is younger than B by a year or so and Mal is older than the MC (though I don't know by how much). So Mal gets a range starting with question marks for their birth year, and A got a range that makes them one to two years younger than B.
Forgive me for not tagging Mal but I'd rather tag them by name rather than Waiter and Waitress but since we don't have their names yet I can't tag them.
