I’m from the Netherlands. You didn’t ask but our own nickname for our country is “Tiny Frogland” because we’re small and it rains all the time. 

1. favourite place in your country?Ohh that’s actually quite hard. I think Utrecht is a big contender, it’s got a small centre that isn’t accessible to cars and is really beautiful. It’s been getting busier lately, but it used to be quite calm. And there are many parks and seating areas so really fun to hang out with friends. 

Another one is a small cafe/restaurant in Friesland, on the edge of a small lake that is connected to a small river. My family and I sailed a bit one vacation and we had lunch there, and since then we’ve never been able to find it again. We probably drank tea in a fay-owned business and the planes are only aligned once every 99 years.  

4. favourite dish specific for your country?My favorite dutch holiday-related food is oliebollen, it’s fried batter in a ball and its really fucking addicting. Luckily they only sell it around new years’ 

13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders? We have a holiday called Sinterklaas, which actually inspired the American santa claus ordeal. It’s basically the same thing, old dude comes in once a year and gives presents to children. Three strange things about it: 

1. Until Sinterklaas arrives you have to put your shoe before the chimney and sing songs so that Sinterklaas will give you a small present the next day. How many times you did this depended on your parents (Everyone was jealous of the kid who was allowed to do it every day for weeks.) Then at 5 december, you’d gather with your family and get bigger presents. In my childhood we barely even celebrated christmas, Sinterklaas was the big deal. 2. If your family makes the effort, it’s tradition to not just give a present on 5 dec, but to make a ‘suprise’. It’s basically a thing themed around the person’s interest where the present is hidden within. For example: a cardboard painted xbox with a video game inside. Or a fake plant with the present hidden under the dirt. At elementary school, you usually do a form of this with your class as well. 3. With those presents/’surprises’ come poems. You must write a poem and it shall rhyme god damn it. You write something sweet about the person you’re giving the present to, from the perspective of Sinterklaas or one of his helpers. 

22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed?

I lied, there are 4 things strange about sinterklaas, and one of them is that big parts of the tradition are pretty damn racist: The ‘helpers’ of sinterklaas being depicted as racist stereotypes of black people.

Our society’s racism issues mostly have to do with immigrants from Morocco, Turkey and East Europe (and now syria and such as well), so these racist ass traditions mostly flew under the radar until some years ago. Black dutch people have been pushing for change for ages, of course, but they’re really in the minority here even within minority groups, so only until there was more international attention to the problem, most dutch people even started to think about it. There’s been some progress, but it’s slow going and there is a lot of backlash of the ‘we must protect our culture’ idiots. 

So yeah, pretty ashamed about that one. We’re generally quite oblivious to the problems we’ve got, because there is a heavy ‘everyone is equal’ liberal mindset, with has the nasty side effect of activism being seen as complaining. Because if the law says everyone is equal, no one is being oppressed right? 

But despite that, we’re actually pretty okay on the progressive front compared to the rest of the world. But the thing I’m truly proud of as the dutch is our transport system, and the way you can be totally fine without a car in the majority of our country. Not to mention that we bike A Fuck Ton, and more countries should implement a bike roads like we do. Infrastructure is something we actually do really well.  

28. does your country have a lot of lakes, mountains, rivers? do you have favourites?

Ha no, we’re as flat as a pancake. We do have some lakes and rivers. I guess Ijsellmeer is a fave because it used to be the Northern Sea and we went like ‘nah, we want more land and ocean is overrated,’ and made a lake out of it with a big ass dam. The Rijn is also historically a good one, it’s where the Romans just kinda gave up taking over land, which is kinda funny to think about. The whole of western europe? No problem. One river? Nevermind.
