Lost Pet 1-HiraMin
Tayiba tilted her head to get a closer look at the picture of an adorable white dog on the notice board. Missing dog. Answers to RapMon/Monie. In case of any news, please call at: xxxxxxxxxxx
Hmm, I hope they find him. Tayiba thought to herself. The poor dog must be scared, away from home. But what kind of a name is RapMon?
She adjusted her bag on her shoulder and continued on her way to class. It was fall and the campus was abuzz with new students. Tayiba smiled, looking at the confused, clueless freshmans. She was just like them last year. She wondered if she looked as naive.
She walked across the campus grounds to the opposite building. The only bad thing about taking the evening class was that she had to walk all the way across campus after her first class. She didn't mind it too much though. She liked the solitude, a time with only her thoughts.
She walked along the path, lost in her thoughts, when a sudden movement startled her. She let out a squeal, stumbling backward. There against the brown brick wall of the building was a white ball of fur, lying huddled and shivering. Trying to calm her wildly beating heart, she slowly approached the dog. It didn't look like it was hurt anywhere, just scared. Carefully, she approached him, raising her hands in a reassuring way. At first the dog cowered back but realizing Tayiba wasn't a danger, he unfurled and walked towards her. Tayiba tentatively touched his head until he stepped forward himself, letting her hand trail through his fur.
As Tayiba got a better look at the dog's face, she realized it was same as the one on the missing poster she had seen a couple of minutes ago. She checked the time, five minutes till class. There was no way she could return this dog to his owner and make it to class on time.
"What should I do with you, Monie?" She asked the dog. He mewled in return and Tayiba decided she couldn't leave him there alone.
"Well so much for my class. Come on, boy." She called to the dog as she walked back to the building she had come from. The dog walked beside her, seemingly trusting her enough to follow.
She searched for the poster among all the other ones cluttering the notice board, about club meetings or drama callbacks or exam dates, finally finding the right one. She called the number mentioned on it, glancing at the dog still standing by her side and eyeing every passerby suspiciously.
Cute. Just as the thought crossed her mind, someone picked up the phone. A tentative "Hello?" greeted her and she cleared her throat.
"Umm.. this is about your dog?" She answered, unsure of what to say as the guy hadn't mentioned his name on the poster.
"Oh yes! Did you find him?" He asked hopeful. He seemed to be moving now for Tayiba could hear the shuffling of feet.
"Yeah, I'm by the notice board in the administration building." Before Tayiba could say more the guy replied, "Okay, I'll be there in ten." The last thing she heard was a door slamming close before he cut the call.
Tayiba looked at the dog who was lying on his belly, his head supported on his paws. She knelt down and stroked his head, then under his ears.
"Don't worry, your owner will be here soon." She told the dog, not knowing if he could understand her.
She felt awkward, sitting there cross-legged in the middle of the hallway with the dog so she started talking to him. "You know, your owner has a nice voice." She smiled to herself. "It's sweet but also deep."
The dog's dark eyes stared at her. "Okay okay, I'm not going to hit on him." She laughed to herself and patted the dog on the head. He lifted his head and placed it on her lap. She continued to pat his head while looking around. Hadn't it been ten minutes yet?
Her eyes fell on a tall guy rushing towards them, dodging the crowd of people.
He was wearing a dark blue campus hoodie and his light brown hair were pushed back, as if he had run his hands through them too many times.
He finally reached Tayiba and crouched down, giving a nervous laugh. A smile revealed dimples and Tayiba found herself smiling back.
After a moment of awkward silence Tayiba cleared her throat. "So umm... I found your dog by the building along that path." She pointed.
The guy rubbed at the back of his neck shyly. "Thank you so much, I've been looking for RapMon for days!"
Tayiba giggled at the name and the guy stared at her alarmed.
"I'm sorry, it's just... A unique name." Tayiba remarked.
A blush crept up the guy's cheeks. "Ah yes." He gave a nervous laugh again. Tayiba decided she really liked that laugh.
Noticing his owner's arrival, Monie was trying to climb up the guy's legs to lick at his face as the guy patted his dog to calm him down so he could talk to Tayiba.
"Uhh.. my name's Namjoon by the way. Kim Namjoon." He extended a hand towards Tayiba and she shook it briefly, introducing herself.
"We should probably get out of this hallway." Namjoon suggested when a passing guy accidentally bumped into him.
"Yeah you're right." Tayiba answered, making to get up.
Namjoon held his hand out to help her up and she gladly accepted, thinking to herself wow, a gentleman. That was a commodity around here.
"Are.. uh, are you busy right now?" Namjoon asked, bending down to pick up Monie's leash.
"Well, not really." Tayiba didn't mention her missed class to not make Namjoon feel bad.
"Oh good, then I can treat you. For finding my dog." The dimple smile returned.
"Do you wanna go to the campus coffee shop?" He asked so enthusiastically that Tayiba didn't have the heart to say no. She didn't want to either. So much for not hitting on him. Sorry Monie.
~ Namjoon fumbled with the ingredients, reading the recipe on his phone for the hundredth time. It was simple enough but Namjoon wasn't very adept in the art of culinary. He hoped this would turn out okay.
It had been around a month since he had met Tayiba when she had found Monie. They had become friends after that, finding out that they had a class together. It had become their ritual to get coffee during their 15 minute break after the class.
But since tomorrow was game day, they didn't have classes after this one English literature class they had together. He had proposed that since both of them were free, why don't they make their coffee break longer. What he hadn't told her was that he was going to ask her to officially go out with him. And to sweeten his deal, he was making french toasts for her. Or well trying to was the right word.
After burning the first two toasts, he put in the second two in the frying pan, turning the heat down. A pair of feet shuffled in the dorm kitchen and he turned to find his roommate, Yoongi, entering the kitchen half asleep. That guy ran on a vampire schedule, he must have just woken up. He started his coffee making ritual when he noticed Namjoon by the stove.
"What are you doing here at this time of the night?" He asked in a lazy drawl. "I'm making french toasts." Namjoon announced happily.
"Burning them is more like it." Yoongi motioned to the burnt ones on the plate and Namjoon quickly turned to check if his current ones were okay. Luckily they were fine and he transferred them to the plate.
He held the plate out to Yoongi. "Try them."
"And die?" Yoongi made a disgusted face but still picked one up.
He bit into it tentatively but then his expression changed and he actually seemed impressed. "Not bad." He commented then picked up his coffee mug and left the kitchen.
Namjoon tasted the other one and he agreed with Yoongi. It wasn't bad. It was actually good! He might be able to give these to Tayiba after all.
He turned off the stove and put the french toast mix in the fridge. He had decided to run back to dorm to make them fresh then meet Tayiba at their usual place. It was a kind of courtyard at the campus. It was a popular date spot but it was usually empty at the time Tayiba and Namjoon went there. They sat on the concrete bench, sipping on their coffees. Sometimes they talked about random stuff. Sometimes Tayiba would draw and Namjoon would work on his lyrics, both of them doing their own thing in silence just happy with each other's presence. Those were the moments Namjoon loved the most.
Namjoon made his way upto his room when his phone vibrated in his pocket. It was a text from Tayiba. His heart sped up as it always did when he saw her name on his phone. A smile spread across his face as he opened the text. The smile turned into a frown as he read it.
Hey! I'm sooooo sorry Joonie, but my professor gave me this last minute assignment that I need to turn in by tomorrow. I don't think I'll be able to have coffee with you after class ☹️ I'll have to go to the computer lab right after. Soryyyyy!
Namjoon sighed. So much for french toast and asking her out.
