The first podcast was entirely an accident, Alastor forgetting he was on air when you and Rosie suddenly burst in

He gets so sucked into what you're saying that he forgets about his radio show and everything the three of you are saying is being broadcast live

But a lot of people are tuning into it??? Like everyone is so entertained by the three of you and your conversation

Once you three realize what happened then you all agree that this must become a weekly occurrence

Even the other overlords listen in on it every once in a while, finding it hilarious

Vox is absolutely livid because he's being IGNORED, why is nobody watching tv anymore???

He tries to get you and Rosie on his show instead but the two of you don't even take the offer seriously

The chemistry would be all off without Alastor's sparkling humor anyways

Which makes him throw a huge tantrum that becomes the next topic between the three of you

Y'all are just trashing this man at this point

It's his own fault for providing you three with so much ammo

But nobody is safe

It's just a fun little gossip podcast that somehow blows up and turns into this gigantic thing

But it gives you three an excuse to hang out

Whenever the conversation starts to drift towards the hotel you try to stay out of it for your own reasons

And it does always go back to the hotel, Alastor is running a business afterall

Alastor slowly starts to warm you up to the idea of his hotel, whatever your motivations are or if you believe in it

Rosie also encourages you to at least humor him and go see it

Easy for you say, he's not pressuring YOU

So you give in one day, accompanying Alastor to the hotel

Huh, Alastor wasn't joking when he said that Lucifer's daughter was his partner 🤔

You're not entirely surprised when you see the shocked looks everyone gives Alastor when they see you

Who else would it have been, Vaggie???

Everyone nervously watches you and Alastor interact, it's two extremely powerful beings in one hotel

Except for Niffty, she greats you like an old friend, climbing all over you and making maniacal noises

Husk and Niffty are the only ones not surprised by your friendship, knowing that you and Alastor are good friends

They fill the others in on your relationship when they think you two aren't listening

It's almost funny hearing it come from someone else, you had nearly forgotten how you two met

"That's right..! I DID try to kill you! That's so funny!"

"Isn't it? And I do believe I nearly bit your hand clean off!"

You two are fucking deranged

You have a better understanding of why Alastor wants so much support for this hotel now

And you're a little surprised that Charlie seems to believe so genuinely in the idea of redeeming a soul

Regardless of if you're sold in the idea or not, you agree to support the hotel for Alastor

But now you're going to rope Rosie in with you too, if you're gonna go down then the three of you are going down together

But that's unlikely to happen, Alastor wouldn't lead you guys into a death trap

You know what I feel like we don’t talk about enough?

The way Tim took Lucy’s radio off her belt in 5.18

No hesitation, just grabbed that shit right off her belt and Luce didn’t even flinch, it makes me feel some kind of way

The casual intimacy of it maybe? Idk but I don’t think we discuss that enough. Lol

Or that episode in general because there was so many Chenford things in that we could talk about lol (I also need to discuss her nightmares comment — I’m supposed to just move past the knowledge that Lucy has nightmares about Tim getting hurt or worse!? Like what? When did they start? How often? I need to know)

Oh you're definitely not the only one feeling some kind of way about this! Let me go rewatch that moment. For science, of course. No but the familiarity of that gesture, the lack of hesitation, how Tim grabs it… and the fact that he does it in front of everybody! Without caring one bit. And listen, I know this is an ongoing tradition of his, snatching things from Lucy (like a piece of paper or a TV remote). But it's one thing to take something from her hands… It's another to do it from her body. At work! And Lucy staying completely unbothered by this… So unhinged. Also, since we're talking about that scene, I love how their expression is the same when they hear Aaron on the radio.

And you're right, there were so many little moments like this one. I need to rewatch the entire episode because I know I missed (or forgot) some of them. I remember that you already mentioned one of Tim's look in a precedent post. I also loved all the fondness that emanated from Lucy's looks and smiles when she was talking about Tim. She has such a warmth to her. Or how she was relieved (and happy to see him) when he interrupted her interview at the beginning, as it was getting too personal. Or her little laugh after refusing to read Jake's text messages. And the contrast with Tim's reaction.

That's actually why I liked that this time, they had solo interviews first, before having a final one together. Mainly because it allowed for a completely different dynamic. Lucy - who's usually enthusiastic - was more subdued and a bit nervous for this one. Tim was even grumpier than normal. And he was so ready to kick them out of his office. But it all balanced itself out when they were together. Lucy was more confident, even glowing, and was able to smooth over Tim's rough edges a bit. Until he got his wish and really kicked them out from her apartment haha. The looks during that interview though… And Lucy calming him instantly by simply touching his arm… The way they ground each other is unmatched.

And yes, that nightmare comment! How are they going to drop this info and not even extend on this? Did Lucy already have them before they found Jake's body? Is this what triggered them? I need to know more! And does she wake Tim up for reassurance? Or is he the one who wakes up first? And am I really to believe that the fact that his doppelgänger was shot and dumped in a dumpster LIKE HIS EX-WIFE didn't trigger anything? I have so many questions… I'm going to need a scene in s6 where one of them has a nightmare - with everything that happened in the last two episodes, the writers even have the perfect setting for this.

what book are you currently reading?

not reading a book actually, but as part of research for my current uni project i've starting reading a CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) called In the Hands of Morpheus: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Sleep, written by Eva Triebl.

not to bore anyone, but if you're curious it essentially discusses: Sleep as a public health issue, the exploitation of Sleep as a business opportunity (for example: the countless self-help books that are published; employers integrating workshops on Efficient Sleep (eg: Tom De Luca's "Power Napping For Less Stress") as a way to boost productivity from employees; etc), and how Sleep has been slowly reconceptualised as a lifestyle feature/commodity. riveting stuff.

what's your favourite film you saw in a cinema this year?

i haven't been to the cinema yet this year ngl, tho we might be seeing something for Mother’s Day? not sure yet, and honestly i don’t wanna think about having to travel home three weekends in a row lmao.

i haven’t seen anything yet mostly because i don't watch tv or listen to the radio so i'm very unaware of any new and upcoming films unless i hear them by Word of Mouth, but I also just don't actively enjoy going to the cinema either.

and as for events, (assuming the question doesn't mean birthyear too) the 2004 Transit of Venus occurred on my birthday! it’s an astronomical event where Venus moves directly between Earth and the Sun, and to us it shows up as a small black dot that passes the face of the Sun.

personally i think it's fucking awesome because the last pair of Venus Transits took places in 1874 and 1882 ⁠— more than a century ago! ⁠— meaning the people that witnessed it saw an event that no other living person at the time had ever seen!

i go by a nickname online, exclusively... i hope. generally i dislike my real name, but i feel a bit silly asking people to instead call me by my (irl) nickname more often.

uhhh i'm good at Language Analysis, maybe? i studied english language in college, and as taxing and exhausting as it was it's just stuck with me.

generally i'm bad a Multitasking. in the sense that i try and continuously fail to work through a list of tasks one at a time. i'll start on something, see something else and convince myself that i can, “Just Quickly Do This On The Way,” out of convenience or something…but then it repeats and repeats and i get distracted and diverted even more…and before i know it, i've started on ten tasks and am yet to finish any one of them!

it bleeds into my essay writing too. i waffle and ramble on a lot (which is why answering this tag game is taking so damn long tbh), my writing is too “flowery” as my (prick of an) English Teacher used to say. so it takes a lotta effort to redraft and refine absolutely everything i write lmao.

All of Us Are Dead was actually really good. I'm not super into zombie shows, so I didn't watch it when it first came out. But now my sister was watching, so I tagged along, and yeah, I was totally sucked in.

I don't remember, my week was so chaotic that I feel like I was rushing the whole time, but I can't think of anything specific.

People who want to call me on the phone. << lol same, I despise phone calls.

What is a food you think is nasty that most people enjoy?

Tomatoes.

Would you rather never be sick again or be rich?

Probably never be sick again, although I feel like being rich is a bit more tempting right now. I'm generally rarely sick, but the money could be cool for travelling the world.

Why Jillian Sucks

Hi, welcome to Odyssey Mystery Hour! I'm your host @gritsandbrits and today I'll be talking about a hot topic in the AIO fandom! Wanna know the tea? Keep on reading!

In the weeks I started getting back into the radio series, the newer episodes have started to irk me, mostly because of one of the more annoying additions: Jillian. Marshall. 😬😬😬

Even though I ship Jason with my self insert OC this not going to be about her. There's a lot of reasons why I do NOT like the idea of Jillian x Jason becoming a canon thing on the show. I hope to describe these feelings as best I can.

Who is Jillian you might ask?

Well to put it simply, Jillian is what happens when a Soccer Mom and a TikTok boyfriend mate and spawn an unholy baby and name them Rachel Berry. Out of the aspects of Nu!Odyssey I dislike, Jillian is the one thing I truly despise. Thankfully I've met fans who share the exact sentiment! 😁😒

Double-N Annoying, Double-O Nincompoop

Making her debut in 2018, Jillian is described as lively and upbeat, if a little high strung and immature; the perfect recipe for Kid Appeal! Before she moved to Odyssey she lived in different cities and worked nineteen jobs before becoming roommates with Connie and her sister Jules.

Now this is actually a fairly interesting set up: a new character struggling to find purpose only to discover it in a quaint small town. But as it turns out her going through that many jobs seems to be more than just struggling to find purpose.

When I first saw her design my thought immediately went to the smarmy classmates I went to school with.

We're introduced with this iconic line: "Hi!! I'm Jillian Marshall, double-L Jillian, double-L Marshall! It's so nice to meet you!"

With that one sentence I knew I was about to die.

The following episode has Jillian bumbling through every job interview much to Connie's duress after which she conveniently ending up working at Triple J Antiques...the same place Jason works!

A little backstory on Jason: he is the adult son of John Whittaker, one of the show's main character, and a bit of an Ensemble Darkhorse. He was introduced as a secret agent meant to bring action and intrigue into the show. He was set up as a charismatic and reckless sort of guy clashing with the calmer Jack Allen. After the Green Ring Conspiracy Saga, Jason officially retired from James Bonding and settled down to work at the Allen's antique shop.

Given his immense popularity there's understandable concern for how he is written and who he gets paired up with. So what does that have to do with Jillian.

Well, the idea of Jillian working at the same exact place as Odyssey's resident bachelor and calling him cute raises a few eyebrows.

"B-but Grits all she did was call him cute! You're reaching too far into this!"

Am I? Look I know this wouldn't be much of a big deal too but that is a subtle tactic the writers threw in to get the cogs turning for Jillison. Jason is clearly uninterested and even implied to dislike her. Jillian bemoans this but Connie reassures her that that's not the case. But hey at least she called him cute so OF COURSE she's going to end up being his love interest!

To me removing a character's core trait to justify a romance means you do NOT know how to actually write a compelling romance. It's trite, it's forced and painful to listen to.

It's also obvious she's a replacement for Bernard, given they have similar personalities and her brief stint on TV (which she also failed at lol). But whereas Bernard was actually endearing, Jillian seems more of a cliche womanchild with zero self awareness and tact. No actual depth, just a personality that is incredibly dumbed down and even insulting. Seriously they made her the dumb blond stereotype in an era where we should've moved on from that! 🤦

Did I mention she goes to church?

Yep she's gonna be one of those Christians.

Literally Loveless, Literally!

Oddly enough the narrative frames this as a rivals to lovers thing, where Jason is both the charismatic friendly guy and the super uninterested Straight Man. The constant twisting the turning makes him go OOC. See we know he's fit better as the former because that goes in line with his canon personality. But when they make him the latter he just comes off as unnecessarily mean. This is turns frames Jillian as someone we should pity: "Oh the attractive male doesn't like me because I went into his office without permission!!"

Wouldn't it make more sense for Jillian to be the one uninterested in a romance since her focus in to find a job/better purpose and romance might distract her? That would make a fun subplot...IF SHE WASN'T OBNOXIOUS!

A pattern I noticed and several fans pointed out: Jason's previous love interests were consistent in that they were strong minded women who challenged him in different ways. Their personalities bounced off creating a fun dynamic that was entertaining to see. Even though they didn't end up with him, you can still see and hear and feel their chemistry which is my goal for Jason x OC. Tasha doesn't make Jason OOC & they had a bittersweet arc, so their interactions were organic. Monica only made him OOC because she was a villain actively manipulating him. So again that worked in terms of story and led to Monica's redemption if my memory serves.

However, Jillian's dynamic is not that fun to listen to. You can feel her annoying Jason through the airwaves. She's strong but only in the sense of feeling something hard underneath your back laying on the bed and realizing that's just your earbud. She's vibrant yes but what else? She doesn't have any unique traits to contrast Jason, and any attempt at a contrast would mean making him act out of character. Adding her bumbling clumsiness and annoying voice, Jason would get tired of her very quickly. He's the type to go for people to have intelligent conversations with, not make him lose braincells. She could very well bring out the worse in him, it'll be an unhealthy relationship.

Here's a tidbit worth mentioning: the VA for Jillian actually auditioned with Jason's VA Townsend Coleman. Now that is big ass red flag right there! No hate towards the actress, just throwing that out there. There's also a facebook page dedicated to Jillison. Typical FB stupidity ramped up to eleven, or AIO fans who see something in Jillian; or at least THINk they see something worthwhile in her.

It doesn't help the writers keep insisting that these two go well together. The audience knows they do not work well as a pair but the narrative keeps insisting they are anyways. I recall an episode that had them pretend to be married while undercover and it was bad. Like REALLY humiliating to see Jason put in that position. He also told her to shut up much to my joy because she could NOT stop being irritating for five minutes. Alas the show still tries to justify Jillian being the Perfect Woman for Jason when she's anything but. And not even endearingly imperfect.

Follow Up

These tags I wrote on one of the AIO posts describes how I feel about Villain Marshall and the Jillison coupling as a whole. It just wouldn't work because Jason needs someone that can actually CHALLENGE him, have their own personality that can bounce off his (without being forced), and most importantly DOESN'T AGGRAVATE THE FANDOM!!

I have not met a single person anywhere that say they like Jillian. It's a different story apparently on the Club App - they like her for reasons I'm too cowardly to find out. But no, she sucks as a character. She makes a annoying friend, and is not a good addition to the show, much less a good love interest.

The only good thing she brought us are the nicknames we gave her 😌

1. What were your biggest plans for 2017 when the year began? With the year over half gone now, how have your plans progressed and/or changed? If you could change one thing that has happened so far this year, what would it be and why?

Honestly i didn't really have a plan. I just wanted to keep doing what i was doing, continue life as i was doing it. Life has been going good for the year and it's going the way i like. I wouldn't change anything that has happened this year.

2. Do you believe dreams come true? Why or why not? What’s the most unusual dream you’ve ever had?

if you mean literal dreams that you have when you're sleeping, then i'm not too sure about that. But if you mean something more along the lines of goals, then absolutely. if you put your mind to anything then you can achieve it.

3. Name your top three musical artists of all time (individuals or bands). Why do you love them so much? What song would you pick from each of them that you feel is their best work?

Well, I'll just pick three that i have really loved in the past. I loved hollywood undead for a long time in grade school and high school. i don't know why, my friend's liked them so i just listened to them whenever i was with my friends and ended up liking them. I also really had a thing for One Direction at one point and i think i liked them because they were cute and foreign lol not because they had any real talent. Twenty one pilots was my most recent favorite band. I thought they were new and mysterious, i fucking loved them.

favorite from hollywood undead would be everywhere i go, from one direction it'd be one of their really old songs that i can't think of right now, and from twenty one pilots it'd be car radio

4. When is the last time you pulled an “all nighter” (where you stay awake the entire night to the next day)? What was the reason you did so, and was it worth it?

It's been so long. I used to do it all the time when i had a lock-in at church. I used to be in a youth group and we'd have a lock-in twice a year and i always stayed up the entire night, it was 30 hours long.

5. What is one life experience most people around you seem to have had that you haven’t (marriage, kids, work-related, etc)? Conversely, what is one life experience you’ve had that most people around you haven’t?

there's so much that i haven't experienced. i haven't gotten married or had kids or even had my own place yet.

6. What do you think is the main difference between confidence and arrogance? What exactly makes someone come across as confident in a way that you find appealing? Conversely, what makes you classify someone as arrogant rather than just confident?

well when someone is arrogant they think they're the shit and they're better than everyone else and they hold themselves on a pedestal. having confidence in yourself is having self love and being happy with how you are as a person.

7. What are your favorite news sites? Which sites do you believe present the news with the least bias, and which are the most biased? Do you believe the comments sections of news sites are a good or bad thing?

i don't really look at news online. I mean, if it comes up and i find it interesting then i will read it.

8. If you could take a two-week vacation right now without having to worry about the details of making it work (money, vacation time, etc all taken care of), where would you go? Who would you bring with you, if anyone, and who would you want to make sure you went without?

I would love to go to ireland. it looks so beautiful from all the pictures i've seen. i would definitely take jack

9. Do you give pets or animals silly nicknames? What’s the funniest or most embarrassing nickname you’ve given an animal?

well, i have had several pets in my days. but yeah, i've given them pretty silly names sometimes.

10. How bad does a book have to be for you to stop reading, or do you always plow through no matter what? What are some examples of books you stopped reading, or forced yourself to keep reading until the end? What made these books so horrible?

if it's super boring within the first chapter or two and i cannot bear it then i'll just stop reading. i've had it happen several times.

11. If you could make a playlist of 20 songs that sound like your childhood, which songs would be on it? Why would you choose those particular songs?

hey ya by ????, yeah by usher, ride with me by nelly, country grammer by nelly, follow me by uncle kracker, and pretty much any theme song from any older nickelodean show or disney show

12. Would you rather improve your ability to remember things or to forget things? What event from your past do you wish you could remember more clearly? What’s one thing you really, really wish you could just forget?

definitely improve my ability to remember things because i feel like i forget everything. there's nothing that i wish i could forget but plenty of things i'm sure would be nice if i remembered them

13. What’s a word or phrase you use all the time that no one else seems to? Where did you learn or pick up this word/phrase?

i usually steal all of my phrases from my friends and family

14. What’s your favorite comic strip or online comic? Why do you enjoy it so much? What comic strip from the past do you wish was still around?

i like the walking dead comics (WAY better than the tv show), the scott pilgrim comics, and the kick ass comics.

15. Have you ever been lost? If so, where were you and what were you doing? Did you panic or stay calm? How did you get yourself to safety, or did someone come to your rescue?

i got lost in the woods a while ago. i was looking for a house in the woods that i had previously seen, lol. i wanted to know why someone was living in the woods. i was calm but the friend that i was with freaked the fuck out and kind of worried me a bit. i called my mother and she tried to find me and it didn't work so she had to call the police and they had to come into the woods to find me. i was 3 miles or so from where i entered the woods lol

16. Have you ever done something really unbelievable, only to have no one around to see it? What was it?

i'm sure i've done something, lol. i'm a pretty unbelievable person but i don't know right now

17. Name something you consider to be completely unforgivable, no matter what the circumstances. Why is it so egregious to you? What should happen to someone who does it?

rape. they should be put away for the rest of their life

18. If you were exiled, what country would you choose as your new home?

ireland!

19. What’s the last time that you were really happy? What were you doing? Who were you with? What made that time so special?

well i mean, i'm really happy right now. i'm watching some youtube videos and obviously doing surveys. i'm by myself and nothing is special about it right now
