Our professor Amritansh Sir taught us the fundamentals of the camera elements of any scene, such as the camera movements such as tilt and pan, during one of the first few ice-breaker sessions.

Sir instructed us on how to take pictures of any item by tilting and panning the camera on our mobile phone in order to make sure we comprehend it and can practise using a camera.

Here are my first-ever attempts as a media student to use my own phone camera.

Needless to say, since then I've made significant progress in the area of camera usage and can now easily pan or tilt the camera as necessary. The assignment strengthened the foundation of our media expertise by assisting us in comprehending the camera and how to operate it.

Closing remarks

I'm very happy with what our team’s final product looks like. there were a lot of learning experiences for me in this journey. not only did I learn how to use a whole new software , I also learnt how to manage problems better. I think for future projects I would like to take on more difficult tasks since I am now capable in my and my team’s abilities.

lastly, i wanna say a huge thank you to Amritansh sir and Shritej sir for guiding us through this and helping out whenever we needed it but also pushing us for our best.

to my team, Aaria and Annika, I know we had a few squabbles along the way but they improved my perception as a person, so I'm grateful for those. you guys did an amazing job and the film is a proof of that.

Editing Day 1- Training

On the first day of editing, we learned the basics of Final Cut Pro, which is a professional pixel and layer based video editing software. Our two teachers Mr. Amritansh Nigham and Mr. Shritej Patvardhan and showed us the basics of editing. After this we imported the footage on the mac, hence we made a list with the file numbers of which we want to upload in the main movie. because we took many takes for each scene.

Hence, the director and cinematographer, Sakshi Kamath and Aaryaa Chhabria, made a list with the file numbers of which we want to upload in the main movie. Me, the editor took all of the footage and divided it into 3 separate folders, so that it would be easier to edit in the future.

Filming Equipment

The filming of our project required the following equipments:

Camera- Canon 5d mark 3 lights- FX 400, baby lights

Tripod

This was provided to us by our school and was administered by our professors Shritej Sir and Amritansh Sir.

Camera Workshop

The camera workshop that we had were taught by Amritansh sir and Shritej sir and we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to school and physically attend lectures to understand better.

We were taught the different type of shots For example:

Mid: a shot taken from the waist and up. Gives both subject and surrounding presence on screen.

Close up: the shot that lightly frames a person or an object.

Extreme close up: more intense version of a close up or shows specific part of the subject.

Over the shoulder: a shot where the camera is place above the back of the shoulder and head of the subject.

And angles like,

Dutch: a shot which is deliberately tilted to one side used for dramatic effect.

…..And many more.

It was a very fun experience as we all had the opportunity to be the model and the cameraman. We were also given short breaks which gave us an opportunity to get closer to the other students and work as a team.

Camera Angles

We were taught about how camera angles are used in tandem with camera shots to properly frame the subject and convey the meaning of the shot in the best way possible. Amritansh sir also made us do an exercise where we had to use an inanimate subject to take these angles. I used a glue bottle. We also clicked various shots when we had the camera workshop with Shritej sir.

Eye – Level : This is a neutral shot. This angle shows the subjects as we would view them in real life. This is a conventional view.

High Angle : In this angle, the camera is angled down towards the subject, showing the subject from above. This makes it so they appear weak, insignificant or obedient. This diminishes the subject.

Low Angle : This angle makes the subject seem powerful or commanding. This is shot views the subject from below.

Birds Eye: This is used in drama to show motions and positions of different subjects facilitating the watcher to watch things the subject cannot. The shot is taken from directly above. This can be used for dramatic effect as it is a completely distinct and somewhat unnatural point of view. This enables us to show a unique spatial perspective

Slanted/Dutch tilt: This angle creates an intriguing and dramatic effect as the camera is purposely tilted to one side so the horizon is on an angle. This is also known as a Dutch tilt

Two shot: a shot where two subjects are present in the frame.

Over the shoulder: this shot is usually used in conversations and taken from over the subject who is being spoke to’s shoulder.

In order to make sure we understand it and are able to have a hands-on experience of dealing with a camera even when we are at home - due to the online classes - Sir guided us to shoot any object by tilting and panning our mobile phone’s camera.

Attached below are my first ever attempts at handling my own phone camera as a media student :)

Needless to say, I’ve grown a lot in the field of using a camera since then and am able to effortlessly pan or tilt the camera whenever needed. The task helped us understand the camera and how to use it, acting as a strong base in our knowledge of Media.
