The first thing I should ever have said about Izzy and the last thing I intend to say until at least October 26th.
[Although I am not Her strongest soldier, so who knows if I will stick the landing.]
So to start with, I was a "late" arrival to the show. I knew it existed of course, but I only occasionally saw things that reminded me it existed. The first time I saw a mention of "grumpy/sunshine" it was with a picture of Ed and Stede, so I guess on some level I knew there was shipping going on, but that was literally all I knew. I didn't even know it involved Blackbeard lol.
Which is all to say that I first approached and watched season 1 removed from basically anything anyone had to say about it. I think what actually got me to watch it wasn't anything anyone had to say either, it was from youtube recommendations? Like I think I had watched a couple Taika interviews or something and ofmd stuff started showing up? So after catching a few clips and intentionally spoiling the kiss for myself (life is too short to be queerbaited) I watched it in April/May 2023, and was Changed by it the way so many other people were. It grabbed me so hard I started looking for fics, and when fic grabbed me even harder I became a regular tumblr user for the first time ever in June 2023.
What I didn't do, before the second half of 2023, was care particularly much about Izzy Hands.
I remember describing him as psychologically fascinating to the first IRL friend I talked to about the show, and joking that he just needed a good dom. As much as his decision to call in the navy was a threat to Stede's and Ed's lives, I saw his actions as part of a thing needed for the story, and while I knew he was one of the season's villains there wasn't really any heat behind that assessment.
For me he was there to set things in motion, and to serve the narrative in certain ways, to be a foil, more storytelling tool than man. That doesn't mean I didn't think Con did an excellent job adding layers to him, he absolutely made Izzy take up space and feel more present and textured than he otherwise might have. But when I began to zoom out and consider things on meta level, Izzy existed to do a certain thing or occupy a certain place in relation to the narrative and other characters more than anything else. And that was fine.
Then I started reading meta here, and found myself surrounded by passionate conversations about Izzy from many directions occurring with an intensity that I couldn't wrap my brain around. I saw people tying themselves into knots to justify and excuse the behavior of a textual antagonist, and I was baffled and because I still saw Izzy for what his role in the narrative was, it literally made no sense to see his behavior explained away. In the framework I brought to the fandom when I first arrived, trying to explain away Izzy's behavior would be like looking at a forest fire and trying to explain away processes like combustion and oxidation. Or if you'll allow me to borrow another extended, nature-based metaphor from a fic in an entirely different fandom:
Tumblr media
Again, because from where my head was at, it didn't make sense to look at Izzy's morality as a zero sum game because in this metaphor, he was functionally just a brackish body of water. I'm not saying the morality is brackish, I'm saying the morality was literally not the point because like an estuary, an antagonist "must exist" because antagonists exist for specific reasons directly related to storytelling goals.
So there was no real heat behind my feelings about him or his actions, beyond the natural emotional reactions we have to characters and their behaviors before we zoom out. I was of course upset with his treatment of Lucius, which was targeted compared to other members of the crew. I was annoyed with the way he talked to and about Ed. I laughed when his plans had the equal and opposite results of what he intended, which you could argue happened with every single plan he made for the entirety of season 1. And yes, especially as a Black person living in the US, I felt the fear and betrayal that comes from seeing someone call the cops (which given the show and its writers, it does not feel like a stretch to describe calling the navy that). I wondered if there was any coming back from a choice like that, which is a big overriding question for the series as a whole.
I'm not here to debate any of the points in the previous paragraph. I know how I feel and you feel how you feel and there's already been so much said about the morality of it all by people who have explained themselves well, so let them convince you or not. Instead I've been trying to talk about the two sides of my experience before and after getting into the fandom with Izzy.
Before: Izzy Hands, Narratively Useful Antagonist Portrayed Compellingly And Effectively by Con O'Neill.
After: Izzy Hands, Unfortunate Avatar Of The Sadly Common Tendency For Certain Fans To Hyperfocus On A White Antagonist Or Secondary Character When There Already Exists A Protagonist They're A Foil Of (And Also It Looks Bad TO Do That When The Protagonist Is Someone With A Marginalized Identity).
I'm not here to argue the merits of those assessments either, because that's not the point. The point is the vast gulf between them and how the latter does such an incredible disservice to the Izzy we were given and that so many people claim to love. The latter comes from a place where morality is the focus, which I'm sorry y'all, feels like it originates with people who refuse to countenance Izzy's role in the story as well as his characterization.
Viewers who were willing to see Izzy as an antagonist, who don't view the word "antagonist" as a value judgement in and of itself, who don't think that finding an antagonist charismatic or compelling means anything about their own morality, those people can look at the show we were given and take it for what it was made to be. I'm not saying that it's only the Izzy stans (not enjoyers, not jar people) who start fights or that people who understand that Izzy is an antagonist don't also have deep morality related feelings about him and his actions in the first season. What I am saying is that sanding off Izzy's rough edges and trying to make him into something he isn't poisons even the possibility of having a discussion about him because people enter the conversation with two completely different understandings of reality. If you cannot accept the job that season 1 Izzy was given to do to move the story along, well you might as well have watched a completely different show for how much that fanon Izzy has anything to do with the canon one.
This show deserves better than that. The writers deserve better than that. Con O'Neill deserves better than that. Israel Basilica Hands deserves better than that. We all do.

Since the time he crawled out of his grave at the laboratory, isolation was the best company he could make. Anyone who approached him with well-meaning intentions were shot down. Mistakes were bound to happen, but he would have been a fool to make the same one twice.
Once he returned to the little hole in the wall that was his agency, he ensured to keep a gun wherever was accessible for a friendly genetist. Was it paranoia? He didn’t know, but he thought he was desensitized to it all. What one man’s fatal wounds were his blisters and mild annoyances.
That had been the exact reason as to why the Association wanted him.
Several years after he retired from being a lab rat, his agency ran slow. People would hire him for small investigative work, nothing that he usually did in the golden days. It was honest work, he wouldn’t complain, finding a stalker within the bushes and seizing him got his mind off it. However, with the rapid development of caped crusaders typically found in comic books, what good was an old gumshoe?
It wasn’t until a monster had destroyed his agency that he comprehended why people regarded them as a persistent menace.
The fault was his own for leaving his agency unlocked, but after seeing years of evidence for cold cases left in ashes, his regrets immediately flourished to rage. Furor was not a typical characteristic of his, but after seeing his furniture destroyed, the maps and photographs partially charred or shredded, the malicious being only grinned at how he set down his groceries by his feet and locked the door.
The aroma of burning flesh against the lashing tongue of a conflagration never bothered him. How his muscles and ligaments were shredded under the velocity of the being’s claws never hindered his own onslaught. How he had to pry his own intenstines out from his peritoneal cavity to prevent him from tripping over it never evoked a sense of horror. He would give credit when it was due, the doctor certainly enhanced his healing factor.
As it turned out, a Griffin-like being with a flaming head was harder to swat than he anticipated. From a bucket of water, to using the fire extinguisher before bashing it’s skull with the end of the empty canister, he didn’t know how long the fight lasted until it was a new record.
Seven days. Four hours. Twenty minutes.
As someone once said, “time flies when you’re in an adrenaline rush.”
Not even after he hobbled out of the destroyed agency with the singeing aroma of salt, copper, gasoline and rotting flesh, was he greeted with the cries reserved for the victor. Gasping and cheering onlookers could only watch in wide-eyed wonder and admiration at how he stood in grotesque triumph. Being in the limelight never gave him comfort, in fact, he nearly shuffled to escape the crowd as soon as possible.
“We could use someone like you,” a man in a well-tailored suit said, “I’m part of this association and—”
“No,” a harsh refutation, he knows, but he knew better than to hand out his trust like brochures.
In spite of his protest, the intern attempted to chase after him, “but, sir! That monster was a threat level—!” Demon? Dragon? Dog? Who knew. It wasn’t until his arm, the one hanging by a thread of rotting muscle, fell off his shoulder that he was finally left be. The suppressed disgust did not go unnoticed.
“I don’t care.”
Not initially. Had it been his choice, he wouldn’t have even dreamed of being regarded as a poster boy. Since being confined in a pseudo-cage match with just about every abomination Genus could conjure, joining a group of Boy Scouts would have heightened his sensitivity to something he encountered often.
He could barely stomach analyzing a pallid, frigid reflection of himself projected onto a stranger. To envision that scarlet thread lay limp between their finger and his own—a relationship he could best describe as acquaintances—only served as an irritant he couldn’t scratch out. Though, that might have been amplified by the constant attempts to recruit him.
At this point of his life, the private investigator would resume his work. He always did, even after spending a quarter of his immortal days chained to a wall with nothing but his thoughts and his weapons to keep him company.
His last case was what prompted him to apply.
He didn’t know who hired him, but he did know that someone managed to figure out the address to his homely apartment. When asked whether he knew who the handwriting belonged to, none of them would have matched the description of the writer.
Tumblr media
Lollipops?
The private investigator couldn’t help but be a bit dubious, but it was better than getting harassment calls and emails from interns. He read somewhere that people ate sweets to stimulate their thinking, but he just assumed it was a quick way to get a sweet tooth.
What the hell, he needed to get some coffee anyway.
As instructed, he took the public transit to Y-City. Folks were more kinder, a bit pompous, but it could have been due to the fact that he was a walking carcass that made headlines already—save for the idol hero, Anal Mask or whatever the hell his name is—but college kids were quick to point out where Doctor Hajime’s lab was. “He teaches my robotics class,” was the usual answer.
By the time he encountered the front door, he counted how many seconds he would have to escape. Chances were there was gonna be a cyborg or a robot to try and pin him down, inject him with something to make him black out. He had his machetes tucked under the collar of his shirt, his dessert Eagles were holstered at his hips and he had a handsome fire axe within the bag of lollipops and candy apples. He had time to escape, he would ensure that he would, least he opt to shove himself into the nearby wood chipper to finally do himself in.
What he anticipated from the opening door was an older gentleman, someone with a bow tie and unruly and snowy hair. His countenance would have been cobwebbed with age, his shoulders hunched to pronounce a spinal compression. Yet, he would offer a smile as dulcet and as mannerly as any other kind old man.
Instead, the private investigator was greeted with a boy with vibrant tawny eyes and a little auburn curl at the top of his crown. He had to be no older than nine years old. He couldn’t have been any taller than the door knob.
In an instant, he snuffed out his cigarette against the masonry and knelt down to the kid’s height. An instinctual response from someone who was once an uncle—father?—in a family who had long forgotten about him. “Hey kiddo,” the investigator began, “you seen where your dad went off to?”
As incredulous as the kid was, the investigator nearly assumed he went to the wrong place. That was until the boy spoke, “Considering I haven’t seen my father in nearly four years, I’m afraid not,” he paused as he offered a small, wistful smile, “but trust me, you’re not the first person to ask me that.”
Safe to assume that the child genius was much more hospitable than the private investigator was accustomed to. Then again, as he presented a lollipop to the child, those tawny eyes flourished as he hastily accepted the treat from the detective’s grasp. “Thank you, sir!”
“Don’t mention it,” whether or not he was aware of it, there was a smile that aligned.
As the two of them enjoyed their sweets, Hajime elucidated further about the technological black market. What routes they typically took and how he managed to figure out their patterns. The kid truly did have a good head on his shoulders.
“I have a hypothesis that these robots that are being trafficked underneath City W, X, Y and Z aren’t really used for security.”
“And why do you think so?”
“Well, Z-City has a lot of manifestations of monsters. If basic security-Trons were sent off to handle the threats, it would be a waste of resources. I mean, it’s carbon and bismuth—it’s elementary stuff.”
The boy paused as he used his watch as a hologram to present the blueprint of one of the robots. The private eye wasn’t exactly ‘technologically savvy,’ but Hajime called it ‘basic’ so he would just have to take his word for it.
“But that’s not what caught my attention,” he elucidated, as the boy extended his fingertips, the robot’s physique separated by segments of its parts. When he pointed toward a certain adapter, the private investigator couldn’t help but furrow his brows a bit.
“That’s a cranial nerve implant.”
Hajime paused, as if he had fully prepared an exasperative and long-winded statement, “you’ve encountered them before?”
When implored, he suppressed the urge to visibly quake under the phantasmic impulses of electricity that had once trailed down the expense of his brain stem. It was a way to analyze how fast he developed increased intracranial pressure, he remembered Genus saying.
“Friend was a doc,” a decent lie that Hajime seemingly overlooked, though the private investigator felt an acrimonious taste in his mouth. “She said something about how it’d use electricity to wake up dead nerves.”
His russet glare narrowed as he brought a hand to caress his own chin, “thought they’d still be in development...”
“That’s exactly what I was thinking!” For a moment, the boy’s joviality made him appear exactly his age.
Ah- now it’s starting to make sense.
“From what I know, Z-City has monsters just about every corner,” the investigator began. His baritone suddenly lost it’s intrigue once he mentally assembled the puzzle pieces the best he could. “With monsters, people tend to be more scared than they should be. What do you think being scared means?”
The boy’s eyebrows raised, “they’re paranoid?”
“And—?”
“They...” while it was easy to assemble a mechanical enigma to guard civilians, it was harder to provide a baseline to something as fluctuating as human response. Hajime eventually restored to shrugging his shoulders, “...they’re desperate?”
With that, the private investigator pressed a finger to the tip of his nose before he pointed at Hajime. “Desperate people tend to do stupid. If I’m a single father living in Z-City, you think turning into the terminator wouldn’t be my go-to?”
Such analysis didn’t seem to satisfy the boy. Whether or not it was a challenging diatribe, it was enough of a refutation to make the investigator think a bit, “but you know it’s permanent right? I mean, the cranial nerves aren’t exactly something you want to tamper with, especially if those implants can get into your cerebrum and alter you entirely.”
“Well, you—the kid genius—might know that,” he deflected easily, “but what about me? I’m a single father with a degree in underwater basket weaving. Do you think they taught me about cranial nerves while I was trying to make a basket?”
One could hear a pin drop until the boy piped up, “I mean- if you’re scuba diving and you’re weaving the basket—”
“Just finish your lollipop, kiddo.”
Several weeks had passed when they finally traced a call to one of the robotic manufacturers. It was certainly much more handy than to thread scarlet yarn along what tabs had pinned photographs. Then again, doing things the old fashioned way made old habits die hard.
Needless to say, the private eye could understand the boy’s fascination with his toy-like projects. From a giant action figure he kept buried within the depths of the earth to the robot dogs that served as a pseudo-trump card, it was like assembling legos for him. As the two of them took the public transit to Z-City, the two of them settled into a comfortable silence, save for Hajime’s need to tamper with a Rubik’s cube.
Unlike the other Alphabet cities, the ambiance around Z-City felt calloused and empty. It was but the abyss that stared upon them once they left the transit and it gave the private eye an eery sensation that crept along his vertebrae. It must have been that paternal instinct.
“Stay close to me,” he cautioned, though he should have known better that Hajime didn’t like to be talked down to.
“I can take care of myself.”
“—and if I can’t take care of myself?”
Reverse psychology seemed to do wonders, as Hajime’s vanity subsided for the need to have his partner’s back. Should anyone ask, the detective wouldn’t admit the presence of his little smile.
The call had declared that the deal would be set in the alley nestled next to a udon stand and an apartment complex. It was an easy hole in a wall and, considering how the civilian was late, he and Hajime had to play their part. Between himself and no one in particular, he preferred it that way. The last thing he wanted was for someone to die in front of the boy.
“Oi,” the thuggish chirp resounded from the maw of a strange man who looked mechanically modified. His brows were too close to his eyes, accenting a crueler look. The detective fought every urge to usher Hajime behind him. “You Hammerhead?”
He silently reprimanded himself for not bringing a hammer.
“Yeah,” the detective’s response was nonchalant, a lethargic drawl that could have remained hidden within a thick penumbra of nicotine.
“Who’s the brat?”
“Mine,” short and concise, though he let his russet gaze nearly puncture into the dealer, “you want the money or should I show you my wedding photos?” He went in too eager, though that was exactly the point with desperate people. Fortunately, the dealer turned out to simply comply at the mention of money.
“Seven thousand yen.”
It was agreed upon with a shaky baritone by the real customer prior. However, it was a game that the detective often played prior to meeting Dr. Genus. Once he began to thumb his fingers along the bills in his pocket, the dealer swiftly interjected the detective’s counting.
“I-I meant Seventy thousand!”
“Oh?”
Seventy thousand it was that was instantly slapped into the dealer’s hand. However, there was hardly a moment when the dealer abruptly seized the detective’s arm and held him hostage at gunpoint.
Needless to say, one should never underestimate the strength of a man who wanted to make civilians into cyborgs. With an irritated sigh, the immortal felt his head jerk to the side as a bullet pierced through his temporal lobe. Albeit, the moment his body should have sprawled limp was the instant he seized his machete and took a blind swipe. What astonishment and pure horror from the mechanical marvel only wrought a hand to catch the blade.
Fortunately, the fist that veered to deck the detective never came to deliver. Rather, a tendril that emerged from Hajime’s backpack seized the mechanical marvel’s appendage into a tight lock. It was but a split second when the detective retrieved the machete’s twin and severed the appendage.
“Shit—!” The hydra hydrolauics swiftly seized ahold of the being and attempted to suspend him in the air. Hajime’s hands braced tight to his backpack’s straps, though the dealer proved to be a formidable foe, as he laconically wrapped his free arm around a tendril to toss the brat.
Safe to say that the detective prioritized catching the kid than the dealer. Both had landed with a harsh grunt against the asphalt before the detective hastily retrieved his desert Eagle and fired. Once again, it was a null chance, given how he was abruptly seized by his throat and tossed through the brick masonry of the neglected library.
What sanguine from the brunt trauma coagulated and the flesh wounds he sustained, he could only instinctively block the blow from the mechanical marvel. Regular fisticuffs was a fond favorite of his, typically because of how seldom he did it. What reciprocating strike had been enough to swivel his head evoked him to land a brutal bite of his axe into where his opponent should have been.
“Mr. Detective!”
It was but a moment that the private eye peered over to see Hajime with a snapped tendril, it’s cobwebs of electricity was a big enough hint for him. The instant he distanced himself, the dealer had not a moment to abstain when his back arched under the brutal conduction of carbon and lightning. His howl was guttural, ripping through the empty ambiance before he collapsed at their feet.
What should have been a victorious high-five was but a dreadful beat of anticipation. Hajime could only stare down at the beaten villain, “did I kill him...?” His murmur was rather hushed, as monsters were not the same as modified humans.
For the sake of the boy’s anxiety, the detective brought the tip of his shoe to budge the dealer. The somnolent twitch of his countenance wrought a sense of relief to weigh into the boy’s sigh.
The private investigator offered a high-five for the boy to make. The gesture was slow, as if cautious, but the kid genius managed to reciprocate it. “You did good,” he didn’t know it then, but it was a compliment that Hajime would hold to his heart later.
On taking the transit back to City-Y, the detective opted to intervene the silence. An odd thing for him to do, but it was just them and a few others coming home late.
“So, your parents—” it might have been too sensitive of a subject, but he opted to continue, “—did they uh...” it would have been easy to assume they did die. After all, it was how every hero was sculpted.
Hajime only shook his head, “no,” he said before he retrieved a little Rubik’s cube from his backpack. His fingers fidgeted the slots as his hazel gaze lingered toward the trinket, “I mean, they’re overseas. They send me birthday cards sometimes.”
“Sometimes?” The private investigator couldn’t help but raise a brow at that.
“When they remember.”
Had the private investigator known about Hajime’s profession outside of being a teacher then, he would have been more than happy to demand what the hell was more important than their own kid. Did they know he was handled by suits who depended on currency than their own workers? Even if one of them—two if he counted Badd later—was a child?
Even if he didn’t know it, his furor was quiet enough to make him try to huff out a sigh. His jaw clenched along the curses he would have hissed under his breath when no one was around. Fortunately, Hajime was a quick study.
“What about you?” He must have thought it was a witty comeback, considering how his nose wrinkled a bit, “where’d your parents go?”
“Can’t say I remember,” he knew he had them, but he didn’t know what he did with them. Were they around when he died the first time? Longer? All he could afford to do was wander aimlessly as a phantom without a shell. “Been around since the A.D’s.”
“The A.D.’s??”
As it turned out, Hajime was fascinated with history. The boy’s queries seemed to be rapid fire initially, such as whether or not Shakespeare was a real person (he was), how far has technology gone (far enough), or if the crusades were as brutal as written (it was, but he never had the pleasure in fighting in the wars). The boy’s excitement seemed to tucker him out quickly unfortunately.
Just as the private investigator began to describe what Feudal Japan was like, Hajime nodded off and slumped against the detective’s shoulder. Their stop only prompted him to gingerly scoop the boy up into one arm and carry his—surprisingly dense—backpack with the other. Fortune came in technological wonders, as the lab seemed to unlock its hinges at the presence of their creator’s facial recognition.
The time was late when he finally tucked the boy into bed. Hajime’s backpack slumped against the masonry. There was a strange and phantasmic ache at the base of the detective’s chest, something he hadn’t really felt since he last died.
Prior, he often wondered if it was better to be alone or to try and have a family. He was told he was good with kids by their parents who would hire him to find them. To imagine himself as a father was frightening nowadays, as he could envision that bastard trying to pick up his kids for experimentation.
With Hajime safely in bed, the detective’s thoughts drifted to the newspaper that detailed the triumphs of S-Class Hero Child Emperor against the dreadful turnip monster that interrupted his robotics cla—
...They seriously named the kid “Child Emperor” huh?
The detective contemplated on the transit home just as hard as he was contemplating it back home. His glare lingered toward the shredded up business card. It took every increment of his pride to collect the pieces, but the heroes association weren’t exactly child-friendly.
Did that mean he couldn’t try to do better? For the first time, he felt a sense of balance when handling the dealer. His agency was going to go nowhere and he needed the money, that wasn’t including the fact that Hajime would have ended up, perhaps, the only sensible person there.
he hated being right at times.
He needed to do better, not for the sake of spiting Genus, but to be better for himself.
After he called the intern’s number, he waited until there was a ‘hello?” At the other end of the line.
“Hi,” he says, “I’d like to file a hero application. Do you mind walking me through the process?”

NATHAN AVERY, aka THE REDEEMER, is 25 years old and a PUREBLOOD alumni of SLYTHERIN. His allegiance is THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, and is currently TAKEN with a faceclaim of Trevor Jackson.
AESTHETICS
arrogant smiles, the art of a good facade, sarcasm in every word, throwing the second punch, original family disappointment, eyes that hide nothing, a silver dagger, a heart of gold, jean jackets, coffee for the hangover, a cigarette and a warm body, nothing ever gets to me, the sky at dusk, relies on natural talent, dark circles, quiet fear of abandonment, always comes through, wonders why everyone thinks they want to help, well loved cardigans
MOMENTS
Even as a child, Nathan knew that there was an order within their family, and that above all else, everyone had their place within it. However, by the age of six, Nathan knew that he just wasn’t cut out for the position he had been born into. If William was the golden boy, then he was meant to be the prodigal son. While it sounded good on paper, Nate understood that he was being molded into a weapon. As with most pureblood children, he attended lessons of all kinds. However, his father was clear that everything he learned could be related back to his destiny in some way. Nathan was going to be the one that took over the family business, so to speak. It was drilled into him mercilessly that he was going to be the one to do whatever was necessary to advance their family, and pureblood society as a whole. All Nathan wanted to do was get lost in his stories, and become the pirate turned hero It was his older sister that he found a bit of solstice in. Despite being the pragmatic one in their family, she always seemed to have a soft spot waiting for him. Still, even as a child, Nathan knew he never quite fit; a boy born to career criminals that never could stop pretending.
By eleven, Nathan was exactly what his parents wanted him to be, at least in theory. Hiding behind sarcastic remarks and devil may care grins, Nathan seemed untouchable. Sorted into Slytherin, he was following his parents plans perfectly. It was exactly the house they wanted their son to embody; cunning, resourceful, and ambitious, he would make the perfect career criminal. At first, Nate resented the fact that he had been placed in the house that his family had expected of him. In so many ways, it felt like a slight, as he had spent most of youth internally trying to rebel against the destiny laid out before him. Being sorted into Slytherin felt like the first nail in the coffin that maybe he couldn’t escape it. However, it was there that he started making genuine connections outside of his family and those that he had grown up with. Expanding his friendships allowed him to realize that it wasn’t just him that believed his family’s world view was narrow and wrong. Eleven years old, and found himself questioning everything.
When his sixteenth birthday came it was accompanied with nothing but heartache. Instead of celebrating with a party, a family dinner, or a cake, Nathan was given his first task to prove that he was worthy of stepping into his father’s shoes. It made his stomach knot, his teeth clenched, and he’d realized with horror what a part of him had known all along - he wasn’t cut out for this. The rage and disappointment that had followed had left Nathan feeling hollow. His father’s solution was to push his training further, and Nate knew that he had to get out. Packing only a bag’s worth of clothes, a couple of personal items, and withdrawing only the money he had access to in his account, Nathan prepared to leave. Still, Nate felt a duty to his siblings, at least on some level, and he asked them to come with him before he left. He watched as his younger sister laughed in his face at the idea of leaving and told him to get over himself, as his brother shook his head but looked at him with something akin to hope, but it was Mara he focused on. Mara who put a hand on his shoulder, who had always been right beside him, who had always cared, gave him a sad smile and murmured ‘I can’t’. Nathan left and never turned back, having decided that he would never rely on anyone else again.
At twenty five, Nathan sometimes felt as if he was still fighting his own destiny. Having spent the summers before graduating Hogwarts couch surfing and finding twenty four hour diners where he could, Nathan was finally able to call a place home just before his eighteenth birthday. After a night of gambling, Nathan had won an old cargo boat that had been half transformed already into something almost livable. With a little bit of work, Cape Eurus was the home that Nate had been searching his whole life for. A pirate with his very own ship, it had been the first time that he felt an ounce of peace. When he joined the Order, he knew he was going to have to prove himself tenfold in ways that the others likely wouldn’t have to. However, despite having kept his criminal ties to keep the Order informed on that aspect of things, he knew that many of them still saw him for what his family had wanted him to be. Then again, given that he was a smuggler and tended to get his hands dirty for the Order more often than not, he wasn’t so sure that they were wrong. Still, in recent years, he branched out from just his illegal business and created something more lasting. Nathan spent a lot of time after Hogwarts working as a chef because kitchens were notoriously understaffed. Eventually, he opened a restaurant of his own, Deuxième Chance, and allowed most of his revenue to come that way. Still, at twenty five, Nate knew that he was still fighting the destiny that his parents had laid out for him, even if he was fighting for the good guys now.

CONNECTIONS
SIBLINGS - When it came to his siblings, Nathan’s relationship varied with them entirely. With William, there had always been a chasm between them. His older brother was meant to be the face of the family and he was always whisked away to deal with more important things than his younger brother who felt too much. Still, there was a commonality between them at times, and for brief moments, Nathan wondered if William understood him a little too well. Mara, on the other hand, had been the only one he had been close to. She was the person he could confide in, rely on, and trust to be there for him throughout his childhood. Losing her had hurt the most. Things between him and Isla were doomed from the start. They were pitted against each other as children, and Nate had resented the way she’d easily gained their parents love and approval without even trying. In turn, Isla resented that he’d been chosen to run the family business over her. To her, the effort their parents put on Nate was wasted.
THOMAS DEARBORN - Growing up, Thomas had been one of the few people that Nate had actually enjoyed being around. He was a comforting presence among the other pureblood children, as his views had never been quite so staunch. Thomas was much more open minded, even if he wasn’t as vocal about it. Still, they had always gotten along well, and even after Nathan left the Avery name behind, Thomas had been one of the few to still associate with him when he could. There was a kinship there that Nate didn’t take for granted.
JACK CRESSWELL - During his first year of Hogwarts, Jack had become his first and closest friend. Both sorted into Slytherin, they had become the best of friends almost immediately. Ironically enough, it had been Jack that reassured him that his views were not only normal but perfectly acceptable. Since their first meeting, Jack had been there every step of the way to help him fight his destiny. In turn, Nathan never failed to show up when Jack needed him, no matter what the situation called for. Jack knew him wholly and completely, and Nate was grateful for it.
NATALIA FENWICK - During his first year, Nate had been implicated in a prank that had affected Natalia. From there on out, anything that went wrong, she was quick to look in Nathan’s direction to point blame. When he joined the Order, she had been the first to voice her distrust in him. Even after years of him proving that he was on their side, she was always looking over his shoulder, waiting for him to screw it up in some way.

In response to @carminavulcana‘s prompt:
5 times Bhalla almost let Devasena go. And the one time he wanted to leave along with her.
I’m sorry love, this took so long. I know I should have got to this earlier. But then
a) This is Bhalla, we’re talking about, and,
b) My life is a messy, little, boring bitch right now.
So here goes nothing!
I.
It wasn’t just as simple as he would have liked it to be.
Yet, it involved no physical exertion at all. He simply had to pull the latch, untie the chains and then-
Devasena would be free-
-And he would finally heave a sigh of relief.
Moreover, it wasn’t as if she had a place to ensconce herself in. Gone was her motherland, and gone were the people in it. Her marital home had faded into oblivion as well, as this new land that he ruled, remained nothing of the Maahishmati he knew.
Amarendra Baahubali was long dead, and his wife, The Valiant Devasena of Kuntala, was only a breathing mollusc.
And he, Bhallaladeva, had no use for a relic. Particularly one that reminded him of his momentary defeat.
His fingers, calloused and hardened, almost reach out to the bars of her cage, where she lay, finally asleep, motionless, her breath a whisper, almost ominous.
But freeing her?
Was that necessary?
Couldn’t she just stay to witness the disappearance of his Brother’s memory?
Couldn’t she just bear testimony to the ruins He would bring about?
Couldn’t she just be a helpless spectator, while He finally took charge of what was owed to him?
No.
His soliloquy comes in a tone of finality.
Not until she saw the last of it.
II.
The Palace of Maahishmati was still aglow with the fire that had testified his wedding.
Torn from Saurashtra and supplanted in His Land was his Vallabhi, the only one whose affections had been undivided when it came to him.
Or so you thought!, His mind mocked.
He hadn’t been spared this time either. Baahubali’s ghost haunted him even as he forcibly took her from her Father. She, for her part, knew of the cage that held Devasena, and-
-She hadn’t been forgiving.
“Matricide and fratricide!” she said, her voice caustic, “Your hands reek of the blood of the one who begat you, and your breath bears the stench of the carrion you reduced a Father to! Your eyes still bear the spite you hold for his wife, who you cage only as a token of your savagery!”
He hadn’t stopped her as she had levelled her blade to his throat, millimetres away from their marital bed. He didn’t jerk the weapon away with an effortless swoop of his fingers, that longed to caress her cheek. He didn’t turn the knife in her direction either, to quieten her for an eternity.
Instead, Bhallaladeva had only left.
What if I set her free?, he wondered in solitude.
Would that win him his Vallabhi back? Would that grant him her love back?
The contemplations came and went in an endless stream, with conclusions better than the last, with prospects of love, hope, and warmth, all that he yearned for-
He only had to unlock the bolt.
But then, his vengeance was necessary. If Baahu’s spirit had lingered on, even as it tormented him thus, he just couldn’t let it have the satisfaction of knowing that he had finally won.
Devasena had to stay.
III.
Try as hard as he might, Baahu's memory just wouldn't take its leave. His subjects, his people simply wouldn't let him go.
I have tried!, Bhallaladeva furiously clutched the goblet in his hands.
He had. He really had, with all the sincerity he could muster in every way. But, somehow he had failed.
Correction-
He had been a miserable failure.
At times, he felt as if Devasena got a significant triumph watching him fail thus. It was infuriating to give her the satisfaction of knowing that the people weren't accepting his rule.
But then-
You should have known, someone sneers.
At times, freeing Devasena felt like one way to gain their confidence. It would suffice even if they let him start, in a small way.
It wouldn't take him long.
Somehow, it just didn't feel right. Devasena didn't deserve that ultimate triumph that lay in her freedom.
IV.
"Let her go!" His beloved pleads, her eyes bloodshot, her voice quaking, her fingers trembling.
"Vallabhi!" He really doesn't bother concealing the quiver in his own voice as she helplessly fell to her knees.
"Please!" she cried. "I won't ask for anything, ever!"
He fumbled as he held her in his arms. He fumed at his misfortune.
She had been unencumbered all along. Time had brought them closer. She had seemingly forgiven, and perchance ignored a lot more than she had remembered, as she began letting her walls fall.
He had let his guard down as well. Only Vallabhi knew him to have a side where he loved with all his heart and that he held no acrimony. None at all.
But it only had to last till she saw the cage, tangible and proud, right in the middle of the square. And till she saw Devasena, doomed and wretched to a fate none would ever find desirable. It had been hard to believe that the man who loved her so dearly could perpetrate such wrongs on another woman.
"She had a baby!" she begged, "Let her go! For me! For our child!"
His lips went dry as he saw her tremble in grief.
He just didn't feel the anger he should have felt. Instead, he felt the same pain as the woman in his arms. He had been elated when he'd heard the news of her pregnancy.
Happiness was months away as he eagerly awaited the birth of his child.
Hadn't Baahu been escatic as well?
Hadn't he killed a newborn?
Had he not slain his own Mother?
Was he not doomed?
For all Vallabhi's happiness, his vengeance bubbled, yet again. Baahubali hadn't spared him now either.
And he, Bhallaladeva, for his part, wouldn't spare Devasena.
V.
'Bhalla!'
The deep baritone called out to him, yet again in the middle of the night.
At times, the voice felt like a tangible form, as humane as Amarendra had once been, in the times when he used to smile, the warmth extending up to his illumined eyes…
Was it him?
Was it a ghost?
Or a spirit?
He always woke up, startled out of his wits, sweating profusely.
He never had to ask who it was, for he knew that voice too well. It was the voice that killed him a thousand deaths every moment he breathed, reminding him of his-
Sins?
Had he really sinned?, wondered he.
Would releasing Devasena be atonement enough to stop those thousand deaths?
But he hadn't really sinned, had he?
The Maahishmati Throne was his. Sivagami Devi's love belonged to him. None had been Baahubali's to call his own. The mighty Amarendra Baahubali had been in his debt, and had left his dues unpaid.
Unpaid debts accrued sin.
And in captivity, it was his wife who was atoning for his sins.
At least, that reasoning helped him garner some paltry slumber in such nights.
---
+1
'We couldn't save The Queen, My Lord.' the Royal Nurse almost trembled with the wailing infant in her arms.
Bhalla didn't look at his son. He could most definitely not look at his deceased wife.
There goes your chance of atonement, Dear Brother, He heard clearly.
Vallabhi's lifeless body seemed to mock at him in her resignation from life. She had purposely let it go, deliberately held back in a fight against death, only to relieve herself of the burden of loving an irredeemable soul.
If she had been unable to deny her love, she had denied herself the life that had been her destiny, and with it, she had taken the final bits of life he could cling to.
"Release her, please!" she had requested, time and again, only to be met by indifference and useless consolations.
Would she return if he set Devasena free now?
The dead cannot be resurrected, he told himself. He had no use for anything now. If he freed Devasena, maybe he could accompany her, and let this accursed land rule itself.
At least, he could make an attempt to revive his soul, just as she had wanted.
But then-
Vallabhi wasn't there to witness his redemption, was she?
And wasn't it Devasena's plight that had caused her such psychological malady? Wasn't that woman responsible for destroying his final chance at humanity?
She couldn't find her satisfaction in his defeat. He had to re-assemble his pieces and forge them into a stronger structure, not just for himself, but for his blood, now motherless.
And as for Devasena-
'Arrange for a nurse for the child.' he said impassively.
'And I shall provide food to the prisoner myself, later in the day.'
He would make sure that Devasena would understand that the pyre she was making was for herself.

Hey, fortunatelylori! I'm sorry if this question is dumb or if this is just not "your sphere of interest", but what do you think of Tyrion Targaryen theory? Well, not a Targaryen actually, since he'd be a bastard according to that theory. I feel like we were given foreshadowing in the show, but my question is - where does it go? Why do we need him as a son of Mad King? What for, what'd it affect? I really don't want to bother you with this, I just felt like you might have the best explanation.
Hey, @casualpolicepenguin!
Your question is absolutely not dumb nor is there any need to apologize. I love talking about ASOIAF/GOT. That’s why I have a blog, after all. Also it’s nice to get asks that aren’t only about Jonsa/D*ny since talking about the same things over and over again gets stilted after a while. Particularly when there’s no new content … Still salty about that, in case you couldn’t tell. :)))
The Tyrion Targareyen bastard theory really frustrates me and I don’t believe there’s any real reason why it should have been embraced by the fandom at large with the amount of certainty that it has since the reasons why it’s so popular feel flimsy and more like wish fulfillment to me than anything else.
So I guess a good place to start is to attempt to break it down and see what the actual evidence for it is. In case I miss something along the way, guys, please feel free to step in and add to it. I think it’s important when talking about a theory, even one we don’t agree with, to analyze all the evidence presented and not just the pieces we can debunk.
So what is this theory exactly?
It all seems to hanker back to Aerys “Mad King” Targareyen’s acrimonious relationship with Tywin Lannister and Tywin’s insistence that Tyrion is not his son. The theory goes that during Joanna Lannister’s visit to King’s Landing when she presented child twins Jaime and Cersei to the court, Aerys raped Joanna and impregnated her with Tyrion, thus making Tyrion the blood of the dragon.
Based on this first assumption, the theory delves further and designates Tyrion as the 3rd dragon rider who together with D*ny and Jon are destined to save the world from the White Walker apocalypse, thus linking him to the “Dragon must have 3 heads” theory.
Right off the bat this theory is based more on assumption than canon evidence because several things need to be true in order to confirm this theory, all of them doubtful:
Joanna was raped by Aerys
This is based on the  Anniversary Tourney in King’s Landing in 272 AC incident, during which Aerys insulted Joanna by asking her if nursing her children had ruined her breasts, and the king refused the outraged Tywin’s resignation the next day. Aerys, being the asswipe that he was, had expressed similar sentiments regarding Joanna in the past, going as far as to compare his wife to her and find her lacking because Joanna had given Tywin two healthy children unlike Rhaella who struggled with miscarriages through out their marriage (as well as systematic abuse and rape at the hands of her husband).
Does this mean there’s reason to believe Aerys would go as far as to rape Joanna? I don’t believe so. Aerys might have been attracted to her but the insults he piled on her were less for his own enjoyment and more towards humiliating Tywin in front of the court, because Aerys hated and feared him in equal measure.
I think it’s safe to say he wouldn’t go as far as to rape Joanna because that kind of thing wouldn’t have gone unnoticed and would have certainly provoked Tywin into some very serious war-related action and as mad as Aerys was I doubt he would have gone as far as all that considering he could have executed Tywin the way he did the Starks and never did.
Part of the reason why Aerys hated Tywin Lannister as much as he did was because he needed him. In fact he was dependent on him and slighting him by raping his wife would have been something that Tywin, one of the most vengeful people in this series, would have never tolerated, not only because he loved his wife but also because Tywin’s greatest fear in life is being made a fool of or for people to assume that he’s not strong enough to retaliate.
Which brings us to:
Tywin saying Tyrion is not his son
Should we take at face value that Tywin has reasons to suspect Tyrion is not his son? Again, I don’t think so. If Tywin had any inkling that Tyrion was not actually a Lannister, he would have killed him the moment he was born. He might have spared him had Joanna lived but since she died giving birth to him, there would have been no one to stay his hand from doing it.
The only reason why Tyrion survived into adulthood was because despite his hatred of his son, Tywin knew he was a Lannister.
This links back to the importance that Tyrion actually be Tywin’s son because if he isn’t, then Tywin’s rejection of him loses narrative import.
The way GRRM has set-up Tyrion’s narrative is that he is slowly but surely turning into his father: the increasing fear and resentment of being mocked, the terrifying degree of vengefulness, his increasingly abusive relationship with Penny, his cruelty towards the sex slaves he encounters in Slaver’s Bay, etc. - they all point to Tyrion becoming more and more like Tywin. What GRRM is doing with this character is applying dramatic irony: the son that Tywin rejected, the one that was most traumatized and in fear of him, that seemingly rejected his worldview is the one that ends up resembling him the most.
Tyrion not being Tywin’s son would take the narrative equivalent of a sledge hammer to all that development and declare it null and void.
“The Dragon must have 3 heads” prophecy is about the War of the Dawn
We simply do not have enough information about this prophecy in order to make that assumption. We don’t even know if Raeghar Targareyen believed it to be the case or if he was pursuing the fulfillment of this prophecy for different reasons. Also considering the utter mess that Raeghar inflicts upon himself and the world, it’s doubtful that even if he believed the 3 heads of the dragon to be the solution to the White Walker threat that he did, in fact, interpret it correctly. My suspicion is he didn’t but again we don’t know anything about this prophecy aside from Raeghar’s cryptic words and that D*ny has 3 dragons, two of which do not have riders at this time.
By making Tyrion the son of Aerys, and thus the blood of the dragon, GRRM would also duplicate Jon’s narrative role and arc. In this scenario, Tyrion would be a royal bastard, hidden away for years, ignorant of his origins or his true importance. I’m sorry but that feels repetitive as hell.
GRRM’s works with narrative foils as well as the “everything is something you have seen before” type of cyclical plotting but he’s already set up foil for Jon in this regard (Jon has several) and that’s the Young Griff. He’s the heir who has been hidden away and now sets on the path to reclaim his birthright. Except that if the Young Griff is Jon’s foil that, by definition, means he isn’t who he appears to be which is the twist in his story.
There is no twist in Tyrion actually being Aerys’ son, but rather a rehash of Jon’s plotline. Nor can he be a foil for Jon because he’s never been set up as one. Also considering the mountain of evidence GRRM set-up for the R + L = J theory, the flimsiness of the Tyrion Targ bastard theory is even more glaring.
Then there’s Bran’s arc to consider. His story parallels the legend of the Last Hero, the man that ended the first long night. If the 3 heads of the dragon are going to end the apocalypse, what is Bran’s importance to the narrative? It seems dubious to me that he would take a secondary role in the conflict that he’s linked to directly.
In terms of foreshadowing in the books/show, personally I find the pieces rather unconvincing:
Both in the books and in the show, Tyrion talks about dragons with wonder and awe and mentions having dreams about them as a child.
We do know that Targareyens tend to be plagued by prophetic type visions and dreams about dragons and fire so people assume that’s what Tyrion had as well. But I disagree.
From the way it’s framed, Tyrion talks about his childhood fascination with dragons in the same way a kid today might talk about a T-Rex. It doesn’t seem strange to me that a kid as intellectually curious and as fond of reading and stories like Tyrion would be fascinated with dragons.
In addition to that,  this could foreshadow Tyrion meeting D*ny and playing a role in her council. Targareyen bastard isn’t really the only option why this might be employed.
Also, compare Tyrion’s recollection of his dreams with D*ny’s visions prior to hatching her dragons. Really not on the same level.
In the show, Tyrion interacts with D*ny’s dragons and they don’t burn him alive
This one is the only thing that truly gives me pause because I can’t figure out why the writers chose to include it. Partly, I assume it’s meant to show us how brilliant and awesome Tyrion is for not only figuring out that the dragons need to be unchained but also that he’s so persuasive that the usually violent creatures don’t harm him.
It would be interesting to see if GRRM has book Tyrion do the same thing at some point since it’s canon evidence that the last person who tried to enter the dragon lair (pun intended) ended up burned to a crisp (Quentyn Martell).
It’s not debunkable though since it’s also canon that during the Targareyen rule of Westeros, there was stables filled with dragons that were tended by people who did not have Targ blood so presumably the creatures do tolerate other people aside from the blood of the dragon near them. (as is also the case with D*ny’s entourage on Dragonstone)
my question is - where does it go? Why do we need him as a son of Mad King? What for, what’d it affect?
The short answer to your question is that Tyrion’s fans need Tyrion to be the son of the Mad King. However, the narrative not only doesn’t need this theory, it would actually affect both Tyrion’s narrative arc (him turning into Tywin) as well as Jon’s story (as the secret heir to the Iron Throne) and Bran’s.
So why do Tyrion’s fans need this theory? For several reasons:
It makes Tyrion special and keeps him plot relevant
Tyrion’s specialness is the reason why so many people love the character. He outsmarts everyone, he makes all the brilliant points, he plots his way out of everything. The fact that GRRM has a soft spot for him and, as such, he’s ended up having the most chapters in the story comes to enforce the idea that he is somehow crucial to the endgame.
I tend to disagree with this. GRRM loves writing from Tyrion’s POV and he’s also utilized Tyrion as the only Lannister POV character for a long time. However, his importance has waned in recent times with the addition of Cersei and Jaime as POV characters as well as by the increase of the magic in the story.
If the last two books are ever published, I think people are going to be in for quite a shock as Tyrion recedes more and more into a secondary character role in the narrative. His narrative importance will be taken over by Jon and D*ny. And partly that’s because he is, in no way, involved in the resolution of the White Walker threat, nor does he have the abilities or position to be a main character in the Dance of Dragons 2.0. He will be a support character, most likely, in D*ny’s storyline. Which is not something that Tyrion’s fans can accept lightly.
But, just to reinforce this point, look at how sidelined Tyrion has been in season 7 (compared to other seasons) as well as contemplate the idea of eliminating him completely from the narrative at this point (both in the books and in the show). Does anyone truly believe that the endgame is going to be significantly affected by his absence?
He’s not even essential in Cersei’s storyline since the most important roles will most likely be occupied by Sansa as the Younger, More Beautiful Queen (or D*ny or literally anyone but Tyrion) and Jaime as the the valonqar (or Arya, or Bran, or Euron or literally anyone but Tyrion).
That’s not to say he won’t have a story but since he’s not essential to any of the major plotlines, he can’t, by extension, be a main character in any of them.
If he’s the 3rd head of the dragon, on the other hand … you see where I’m going with this.
Tyrion is a hero
Tyrion’s fans have a very difficult time accepting the fact that Tyrion is a villain. A sympathetic, traumatized, entertaining villain but a villain none the less. But don’t take my word for it. Take GRRM’s
Interviewer: Do you have a favorite character?
Martin: I’ve got to admit I kind of like Tyrion Lannister. He’s the villain of course, but hey, there’s nothing like a good villain.
(source)
He’s molded on Shakespeare’s Richard III, for heaven’s sake. (further enforced by the Arya sample chapter in TWOW where the actors Arya is involved with stage a play that is modled directly after Richard III with the Tyrion actor giving a strikingly similar monologue to Shakespeare’s Richard’s famous speech)
He also has done the following: (there’s more but these are highlights)
1. Sexually assaulted a 12 year old that he married in order to become Lord of Winterfell.
2. Murdered his girlfriend/hired companion
3. Raped two sex slaves (repeatedly while bemoaning the loss of his wife whom he was coerced into raping by his father … another one of those pesky Tyrion is turning into Tywin warning signs)
3. Abuses Penny
4. Wants to rape his sister and cause harm to the child hostage he forced into marriage and assaulted.
To understand just how much his fans take offence to people mentioning these canon events, I’d just like to mention that a few weeks back I posted a vid by someone talking about whitewashing characters from book to film, in which Tyrion’s character is mentioned alongside him killing Shae and how that is approached in the books vs. the show. I tagged said vid “tyrion lannister” only to get an anonymous message telling me I was being disrespectful for posting “anti” opinions in the Tyrion tag.
Tyrion’s fans require that they be shielded not only from criticism of Tyrion but also from his canon actions.
The 3 heads of the dragon plays right into that because it places Tyrion firmly in the “good guy’s camp” even though he has absolutely no business being there in the first place.
Nevermind that in this theory Tyrion is the product of rape. Nevermind that it perpetuates the idea of Targ exceptionalism (all fruits of Aerys’ loins are awesome, special snowflakes - with the exception of Viserys, apparently). Nevermind that it goes against the narrative that GRRM set up. Everything is valid as long as Tyrion comes out looking white as snow, independent of how many women he rapes by the time he gets there.
Thanks for the ask!

Town & Country: David Oyelowo on Javert's Tragic Suicide in Les Misérables
The Masterpiece PBS miniseries ends tonight—and Javert meets his familiar, unfortunate end.
For many fans of the Les Misérables musical, Masterpiece PBS's new adaptation fills in the gaps. Where previously, they'd only heard a song lyric or two about Fantine's first love, the miniseries offers the whole story; the audience watches Jean Valjean toil as a prison laborer, rather than just seeing him newly freed.
The same holds true for Javert, Valjean's dogged nemesis. Here, the actor behind him, David Oyelowo, explains why it's so important to experience Hugo's narrative in its entirety (or at least, in six full hours).
Why did you want to be a part of this series?
Because I feel it's revelatory... People love this story because of the musical, because of those songs. Some of them have read the book. Some of them have a vague notion of what it is and maybe are intrigued to know more. But the point being that most people have a sense of what Les Miserables, so [it's great] be able to give them six hours of context and depth, and also history.
Victor Hugo does an incredible job of showing you what happened in the wake of the French Revolution. How socio-economically, culturally, and in terms of societal hierarchy, there was a very specific dynamic in place that enabled revolution. Enabled someone like Fantine, as played by Lily Collins, to fall through the cracks. Enabled someone like Javert, who starts as a prison guard and then works his way up to the higher ranks of being in the police force. And Jean Valjean, who starts in prison and becomes a mayor.
What was it like to play one of the most famous villains in literature?
Well, it was a privilege because I had more runway to bring context to him and why he is the way he is. Most people know that Javert obsessively purses Jean Valjean and that he meets a very sticky end at his own hand. But not necessarily why.
What kind of context did you hope to bring?
I wanted to analyze the juxtaposition of a kind of character who's very Old Testament, [against] Jean Valjean's character, who's very New Testament. [Valjean] feels very much like he is not worthy of redemption, and then goes on to accept redemption, and then goes further to be able to be generous towards other people. To take in Cosette. To be so human and fragile. He's very aware of his flaws, but he's also able to accept that he's worthy of being forgiven for any sins of his past.
Whereas Javert is very black and white. If you're a criminal you are a criminal, you are a criminal forever. That's born out of his own very complicated relationship with criminality; having been born in prison to criminal parents, resenting that fact, and so therefore wanting to push that side of himself away... Unbeknownst to him, [he is] even transposing that criminality that he feels is in himself onto Jean Valjean, and feeling the need to destroy it. It's not until he realizes that Jean Valjean is not still a criminal, is worthy of redemption, is a better person than he ever thought he was, that he realizes he is dedicated his life to something erroneous. So therefore he can't live with himself, which is why he ends himself.
When you were working on the show, did you think about how to draw allegories to today's political strife?
I think it was the tone of what we were trying to do. I'm a producer on it as well, and one of the things we consistently talked about was it feeling very raw and gritty and edgy; those smells and that dirt, to really feel that. There should be nothing chocolate box about it. There's a version of this that would be very presentational and very sedate... But it's a very real adaptation of it, which I think always makes something feel more relevant. But some of the themes that we pull out as well—Jean Valjean is in prison for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. You only have to look at the prison industrial complex here in America right now to know that there are a disproportionate amount of people of color and socio-economically deprived, or economically deprived I should say, people in prison for crimes that don't warrant the sentences. But it's because labor is needed to... it's also become a business, the prison industrial complex. It's not dissimilar to what was going on back then.
What was the vibe like on set?
It was a real privilege to do that because everyone was there for the right reasons and with the right attitude. We started, and it was incredibly cold. I mean, unbelievably cold in Belgium and northern France. By the time we were finishing it was brutally hot. So you needed a level of humor and dedication to not feel bogged down by six months of shooting it. It never felt old or tired. There was never any acrimony on the set because I think we all really believed in what we were doing and felt we were very lucky to be doing it.
How did you all tough through those conditions?
It was helpful. There were certain scenes that were very uncomfortable. I have a scene in particular where I shake Lily [Collins] off and she goes flying. She weighs about a bag of sugar. I threw her and she landed on her hip terribly, and I could tell within the take that she was really hurt. She kept going. It was a rainy night, it was cold. We were on slippery cobbled street. She kept going. I, of course, completely dropped out of character, thankfully the camera was not on me. But she got up and had the most enormous bruise on her hip. But we soldiered on.
These were all the things you had to endure but at the end of the day no one sees that at home. They just wonder whether you tell the truth or not.
Dominic West, who plays Valjean, said you two wanted to subtly suggest a sexual attraction between Javert and Valjean. How did you figure out how to do that, without making it too overt?
I think it's a testament to how attractive I am that Dominic thinks that and I didn't for one second. [Laughs.] I wasn't for one second to play any kind of sexual attraction towards him. I don't see any evidence of that in the narrative, but to me Javert is actually quite an asexual character. I think he is so dedicated himself to this singular thing, I don't think he has room to think of that kind of stuff. So I'm very happy that Dominic was playing that, and that we didn't discuss it.
