I was talking about this with a few moots the other day about this and isn't it funny how there is basically just one big Les Mis fandom that is vaguely divided into several????? Like you have the strictly musical fans, the book fans, the movie musical fans, the Amis de l’ABC fans (which are a whole thing of its own creation and frankly so fascinating) and the apparently newly rising 2019 BBC Les Mis fandom (thanks to white boy of the month Joseph Quinn) .... like isn't it funny how we’re all sort of lumped together and not divided into separate fandoms which have little to nothing to do with each other??? idk I think its kinda neat and interesting.
( @alcoholsoup @yourpigeonwife thx for making me thimk about stuff lol)

the thing that frustrates me about bbc!cosette is that she’s written completely out of character for the sake of making her a “strong” woman. like? cosette IS a strong woman. maybe she’s lacking by 2022 standards, but the story is set in the early 1800s. she’s the product of unresolved childhood trauma, isolation, and a patriarchal society. she’s not a modern girlboss who’s going to shout at her father and run down the street in the middle of a rebellion (where did those scenes even come from??). and honestly, ellie bamber would have been perfect for cosette if they’d written her in-character. she has the charisma, the attitude, the look (minus the blonde hair), and her chemistry with josh o’connor is incredible. like…they’re honestly my favorite marius and cosette. now imagine if cosette (and marius) had been written in character. I’m still mad about it.

Look Josh O'connor was great as marius but that boy was born to mope around a greek island, totally pissed at three in the afternoon with a cravatte and delusions.

Chapters: 3/3 Fandom: Les Misérables (TV 2018) Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Javert/Jean Valjean Characters: Javert (Oyelowo), Jean Valjean (West) Additional Tags: Horses, Travel, Established Relationship, Swimming, Sex in a lake, more details than you ever wanted to know about Valjean's Arabian horse breeding plans, Alexis de Tocqueville's 1830s Arabian stud at Castle Gueures, this is still a 24/7 D/s relationship but apparently that just turns Javert into pure fluff, while Valjean is committing serious horse crimes Series: Part 8 of The Coin of His Shame Summary:
Valjean turned to his back, floating. Javert's fingers brushed his, and he knew without turning his head that Javert was floating by his side. Above them, the moon hung in the sky, large and pale.
Weightlessly, they kept floating beneath it, neither of them speaking. And what was there to speak, Valjean thought, curling his fingers lightly around Javert’s. He knew that at this moment in time, everything he felt Javert felt too: the blissful relief of the cool water, the soothing silence of the night, the overwhelming sense of love and rightness that filled his heart to overflowing.
Or: Valjean and Javert travel during a heatwave to look at the Count de Tocqueville's purebred Arabian horses.
Read on AO3
Featuring a reference list that is way too long, but what better excuse than Iddy Iddy Bang Bang to get out the 1838 French stud books? It’s a neverending delight to me just how many books from the early 19th century there are about purebred Arabian breeding and imports. ❤
Plus, of course, this summer’s heatwaves, which meant that I spent all summer dreaming about Valjean and Javert enjoying a nice cool lake of their own.

I realized today when I was looking at some adaptations that there are actors who played both Bishop Myriel and Claude Frollo and this made me like hmmmmmm…
"Cedric Hardwicke" who played the serious Myriel in Les Misérables film (1935)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He later played Claude Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame film (1939)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the surprise for me was..
this baby girl Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame film (1982) played by "Derek Jacobi"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Is the same actor who played Myriel in Les Misérables BBC series (2018-2019)

made a post a while back on how javert's suicide is often poorly portrayed in film adaptations to the point of accidental comedy, and how the 1978 movie in particular is the most unhinged example. audio warning for a loud trumpet blast, don't turn up your volume

Éponine and Azelma Thénardier, Montparnasse, and Claquesous in episode 4 of BBC’s Les Misérables (2018), dir. Tom Shankland. Starring Erin Kellyman as Éponine, Alex Jarrett as Azelma, Jumayn Hunter as Montparnasse, and Josef Altin as Claquesous.
1st image, from left to right: Éponine, Azelma, Montparnasse, and Claquesous.
(to be honest i didn’t love the bbc series adaptation but these are the most beautiful castings i’ve seen of montparnasse and claquesous)
