Darkest Night Diagnosis: F
I think that's our first F tier. Should I be making a tierlist. Whatever.
I think this book singlehandedly killed the Warriors hyperfix, for better or for worse. I will now be significantly slower with this reread because of this book.
Look... as frustrating and bad as Apprentice's Quest, Thunder and Shadow, and Hawkwing's Journey were, they had redeeming elements. Sparkpaw is a joy when shes doing things in the Apprentice's Quest. Twigkit and Violetkit's tragic relationship is really compelling in like a meta way in Thunder and Shadow. And while that first half is god awful tedious bullshit, the second half of Hawkwing's Journey when they're actually on said journey gets really interesting, and it also had Curlypaw who is the best character.
There's... nothing like that in Darkest Night. I was bored and annoyed and miserable from start to finish. Nothing got my creative juices flowing. Nothing got me thinking about how the plot could be compelling with certain headcanons without just changing the entire thing. There is like one nice scene with Sparkpelt talking about Larksong to Alderheart and it's sandwiched in between Alder screaming at her for emasculating him and pointing out her being ooc for the sake of being a strawman, and then her getting brutalized by a dog so Alderheart can win his pride back. It's not an offensive book but it is mind numbingly boring. It's an unbearably slow read and most of it is spent meandering about.
Characters like Sparkpelt are twisted from their original portrayal for the sake of contrivances. SkyClan is miserable. Mistystar is made into an idiot for the plot to work. Things just happen without rhyme or reason. Barely anything of actual substance even happens and the things that do happen are contrived and aggravating to read about.
I know Warriors doesn't really have intentional themes, and the consistent ones are.... really, really bad. But it felt like at every turn, this book was contradicting itself, Twigpaw's arc being the biggest example. I've said it over and over, but the way this arc is trying to claim a cute found family story with Twigpaw and ThunderClan is so jarring. We're just supposed to accept that ThunderClan was good to her because... they're ThunderClan. They're The Good Ones. Every clan is awful and weird and bad compared to ThunderClan. No Matter What. Please don't talk about all the times her clanmates called her deadweight and considered kicking her out bc of her heritage if she wasn't a prophet.
And they can't even commit to "found family vs blood family" either. They hook Twigpaw up with her adoptive brother and dismiss his adoption as never having been all that important in the face of his "real" family. They dismiss and downplay Twigpaw's biological relationship with Tinycloud and her new litter for the sake of emphasizing that Twig is alone (while contrasting Violetpaw meeting Cherrytail and Hawkwing's nobody sisters). And they ship off Hawkwing and Violetpaw for most of the book so that Twigpaw can talk about how alone she feels and how it's so sad that Jayfeather isn't verbally abusing her anymore. If anyone thinks that Twigbranch has a compelling found family relationship with ThunderClan and her arc is about grappling with chosen family vs biological family, they didn't actually read the book.
And you see this with Alderheart and Sparkpelt too, sort of. They're trying to go "xenophobia is bad! Alderheart and Sparkpelt are split over their political differences!" But the book only sees Sparkpelt as bad because they've deemed xenophobia against SkyClan specifically as a bad thing. Alderheart's dismissiveness and hatred of kittypets is not only not questioned, but reinforced several times. So it's kind of weird that people paint this as like a thing where Sparkpelt is uniquely bad when Alderheart is arguably a whole lot worse, but hes not xenophobic to a clannnn. So it doesn't count I guess.
Speaking of Sparkpelt though, wow I can't blame her for wanting SkyClan gone, because I don't give a fuck about these nobodies either. They are so boring, put them back in the gorge so I don't have to keep reading about them please <3 I don't care about Leafstar or Hawkwing or any of these guys. I don't even have that much to say about them, they're just annoying and boring and I wish they'd go away forever.
Anyways, first F tier book. First book where I was just bored and miserable the whole time. I don't expect AVoS to get better from here. In fact, poll time.
If I get no, I'll just read the wiki summaries, and maybe seek out specific passages from the pdfs. Yes is for reading the whole thing.

AU SkyClan Family Tree 2
So I didn’t originally think that I’d need to change any of the Family Trees I’ve written but the more I work on the second draft of my rewrite the more I realize that they don’t work. So I’m doing SkyClan again because they are the easiest with the fewest cats.
As a sidenote, bolded names are cats who may gain full names in subsequent books so the bolding is a reminder to myself that they don’t have their names in canon yet. Also, Star Names aren’t written here to make things easier on myself.
With that out of the way, let’s go!
Part 1- Waspwhisker, Fallowfern, Leafstar, Billystorm, and Echosong’s Kits
Waspwhisker and Fallowfern have one litter consisting of Rabbitleap and Creekfeather
Rabbitleap becomes mates with Bellaleaf, who is also mates with Rainbrook (Harrybrook in canon). Rabbitleap has Wrenflight, Streamkit, and Flutterkit with Bellaleaf and Rainbrook’s kits with Bellaleaf are Violetflame (OC) and Rileystorm (OC)
Bellaleaf’s parents are a kittypet named Violet and an unknown sire. Her brother Rileypool joined SkyClan with her while her other siblings didn’t
Rainbrook is the biological son of Leafstar and Billystorm, and his other mother is Echosong. He has two littermates: Firefern and Stormheart, and two younger sisters: Possumecho (OC) and Skipperhop (OC)
Part 2- Clovertail, Patchfoot, Sparrowchirp, Shiningcloud, Pebbleshine, Hawkwing, and more!’s Kits
Clovertail’s first litter was with an unknown sire and consisted of Shiningcloud (Tinycloud in canon), Rockshade, and Bouncefire. Her second litter was with Patchfoot and consisted of Sandynose, Birdwing, and Honeytail
Shiningcloud became mates with Sparrowchirp (Sparrowpelt in canon). They have two litters. The first litter consisted of Parsleysong (Parsleyseed in canon), and Pebbleshine. The second litter consisted of Quailfeather, Sunnypelt, and Pigeonfoot
Sparrowchirp and his sister Cherrytail are former kittypets. Their parents still are kittypets
Pebbleshine has a litter with her mate Hawkwing: Twigbranch and Lavendershine (Violetshine in canon)
Hawkwing is a former loner who joined SkyClan as a young cat
Lavendershine became mates with Tree, Lokishade (Loki in canon), and Zeldasong (Zelda in canon). With Tree as the sire, she had Needleclaw and Rootspring
Sandynose and Plumwillow became mates and had Reedclaw and Finleap together
Plumwillow was a loner kit found abandoned by SkyClan territory
Reedclaw later had a litter of two kits with an unknown cat: Kitescratch and Turtlecrawl
Birdwing had a litter of three kits with Sagenose as the donor: Fidgetflake, Curlypaw, and Snipkit
Sagenose and his sister Mintclaw (Mintfur in canon) are the kits of Petalnose and Rainfur
Part 3- Cherrytail, Sharpclaw, and Blossomheart’s kits
As stated above, Cherrytail and her brother Sparrowchirp are former kittypets. Their parents still are kittypets
Cherrytail and Sharpclaw were queerplatonic partners who had a litter of kits together consisting of Cloudmist, Blossomheart, and Duskpaw
Sharpclaw’s mother and sister are kittypets, and his sire is unknown
Blossomheart had a litter of two kits with an unknown sire (speculated to be a Kin cat) consisting of Ridgekit and Duskkit
Part 5- Petalnose, Rainfur, Mintclaw, Nettlesplash, and more!‘s kits
Petalnose and Rainfur were mates and had Mintclaw and Sagenose together
As they grew up together with the same Twoleg, Petalnose and Shrewtooth consider themselves to be siblings
Sagenose was the donor for Birdwings’ kits (see Clovertail’s Kits section above)
Mintclaw became mates with Nettlesplash (later joined by Dragonflywing- Dragonfly in canon) and they had one litter together consisting of Nectarsong, Gravelnose, Fringewhisker, and Palesky
Nettlesplash was a loner kit who was abandoned at SkyClan territory
Nectarsong became mates with Dewspring and had a litter of kits consisting of Beepaw and Beetlepaw
Dewspring and his littermates Gloryflight (OC) and Dropkit (OC) are the kits of Mistfeather and Gertiefang (Mistfeather’s unnamed mate in canon)

A brief overview of Fidgetflake’s Life:
He was born in SkyClan’s gorge to Sagenose and Birdwing, he had two sisters, Curlykit and Snipkit.
One night Darktail turns on SkyClan and attacks them. The kits get separated from their parents but are taken care of by Echosong, Hawkwing and Pebblepaw. The party tries to cross a river but Snipkit falls in. She is never seen alive seen again (she is later confirmed to have drowned when she is seen in StarClan).
After Snipkit’s death Fidgetkit starts helping out Echosong, and she eventually makes him her apprentice since Frecklewish is missing.
Eventually Echosong leaves SkyClan to try and find ThunderClan, leaving Fidgetpaw as the sole medicine cat, she has faith that he will be a good medicine cat and says she believes in him. This is the last time Fidget sees his mentor alive.
Curlypaw later leaves the Clan in the place where SkyClan have resettled. Thinking she will still be able to see the cats she cares about from time to time, unknown to her SkyClan will be forced to leave soon.
Fidgetpaw and his mother Birdwing get captured by twolegs and taken away from the rest of the clan. And SkyClan moves away from where they have resettled. Sagenose has lost his mate and all his kits.
During this period Fidgetpaw escapes his twolegs and ends up caring for SkyClan cats that stayed at the gorge, when Hawkwing’s patrol arrives he helps free Frecklewish from being an apartment and they all go back to SkyClan at the lake, with Frecklewish being Fidgetpaw’s new mentor. Sagenose finally gets to reunite with one family member he has lost after moons apart without not knowing the fate of his mate and son.
Fidgetflake later earns his full medicine cat name. By this point, Fidgetflake will presumably never see his mother or Curlypaw again.

Duckfeather of RiverClan (m, medicine cat), Gingerpaw of RiverClan (m, medicine cat apprentice, Cricketshine's friend), Curlypaw of ShadowClan (f, Bluestream's apprentice), Haypaw of ThunderClan (f, Hazelheart's apprentice),
Duckfeather - A friendly and gentle tom. Duckfeather is a very approachable cat, and he will often be found chatting with a cat while he sorts out herbs, often these cats are not patients, they just like talking with Duckfeather. Duckfeather is very kind and sympathetic towards his patients, and he specialises in comforting and cheering up kits, always talking to them kindly and letting them know what he is doing so they won’t be scared, often telling them jokes and letting them know that they are braver than most of the warriors he treats. Duckfeather will always cheerfully greet any patrols of other clans he comes across, and they will do the same in return, Duckfeather is a popular cat in all the clans, not just RiverClan, 15/10
Gingerpaw - An intelligent and hardworking tom. Gingerpaw always tries his best to be a good medicine cat, he will never stop practicing something until he gets perfect, and once a day he will try and make time to quiz himself on his herb knowledge to make sure he knows remedies inside out, Cricketshine will often help him revise and give him encouragement when they meet at half moon, something that Gingerpaw really appreciates. Gingerpaw can be a little shy sometimes, he’s always been a little socially awkward, so during gatherings he often sticks close to the other medicine cats, especially Cricketshine, he knows that medicine cats share a bond different to that of other clan cats, so he sees no problem in considering Cricketshine his friend and treating him as such, 14/10
Curlypaw - An energetic and cheerful she-cat. Curlypaw always tries her best to impress Bluestream, sometimes getting a little too enthusiastic and falling flat on her face (often literally), but she always brushes her mistakes off with an quick chirp and an embarrassed lick before getting right back to it. Curlypaw doesn’t let anything get her down, even if she makes mistakes in her training she just takes them as a lesson on what not to do next time and tries her best to do better. Curlypaw is always ready to go, and is always the first apprentice to wake up and the last to sleep at night, and she is always zooming around and asking questions about everything, Bluestream certainly has her law’s full, but she admires her apprentice’s enthusiasm, 14/10
Haypaw - A serious and thoughtful she-cat. Haypaw doesn’t like to take risks, she will always analyse something new and only proceed when she deems it to be safe. Haypaw always tries to stay focused on what she is doing so she can learn as best as she can, and will often try to ignore any other apprentices she is with acting silly or slacking off, in her mind, that is kit behaviour, and she wants to prove herself as a warrior, 14/10
