The Age of Innocence
Its been FOREVER!  So long, in fact, that I’ve got to do one of those deals where I mostly post pics, with not so much commentary.  Which is probably the preferred way of blogging, anyways....
So I had left off at the episode where I had been in the hospital after a really bad bout with the flu, and a brush with a condition called ITP which makes your blood platelets tank.  Happily, I recovered.  Fairly quickly, in fact.  Within about a week or two, I was able to start running again.

And within maybe a month, I was able to complete a 6K race.  I had been planning to run a half-marathon, and had to downgrade to this 6K, but it was hard to feel sad about it b/c it was for a good cause.  I really enjoyed completing the Publix Fort Lauderdale A1A Komen’s Run for the Pink, which ended in a gorgeous beachfront sunrise.

By now, we were at the tail end of January.  I had returned to teaching at Uuuu! this semester, with two courses on my schedule.  I found myself a little busier than I had been in a few years - but it was also very rewarding and I was enjoying myself with work.  However, I was juggling this new teaching schedule alongside BUCKETS of medical appointments.  BUCKETS of ‘em, thanks to that whole pesky platelet thingy.  I was having to navigate weekly blood draws and visits to a hematologist, bi-weekly appointments with an internist, a few appointments with a rheumatologist... and as if that wasn’t enough, for some insane reason, I decided to start a course of PT to help rehab that old fractured ankle from last year.  I think the logic at the time was, I’m going to be going to the hospital and clinics every few days anyway, and our insurance in-network rehab center is in the same building - might as well, since I’ll be there....

(I managed to get a stupid cut on my foot the week I started rehab - hence the bandaid)
Maintaining my health from all angles and using all approaches.  I’d read that pomegranate and papaya are both beneficial to the body’s production of platelets - so I’ve made drinking a small glass of pomegranate and papaya juice a part of my daily routine.

The children have helped keep our lives entertaining and full of pride, with their growth and accomplishments.
Photo comparison of Vev and Dey, current school year vs. 2017.  Look at how much they’ve grown, relative to the kitchen counter behind them.  Sniff.

Of course, there are also just the silly and goofy antics that keep life interesting....

Dey’s homework assignments often give us an unexpected chuckle.  On this day, he was supposed to write a word that contained the letters “og,” then draw a picture of the word.  He wrote “ogre,” then drew this figure.  When I asked him what those circles were on the ogre’s body, he nonchalantly responded, “his nipples.”  Um....whyyyyy???

Aside from the kids, there’s been other pleasantry in the mix.  Dr. Spouse and I have had some fun outings together, including this memorable one the week of Valentine’s Day, where I surprised him by taking him to our first wheel-throwing pottery lesson:

It was highly entertaining, if maybe not our best artistic medium :)
We have also had a number of wildlife encounters this spring.
On the campus of UUuuu!  I always see some interesting creatures:

A visit to a local wildlife park gave us a chance to interact with these beautiful lorikeets - for a buck, we were permitted to buy small cups of some sort of fruit juice to feed them!

We’ve also had some exciting wildlife encounters in our own backyard!
Our first manatee sighting!!!!

Of course, the giant iguanas that often visit...

And even an adorable fox!

Anyway.  In recent weeks, to my great delight, the PT has been really helping me with my ankle mobility - and I found myself ready to resume training with my Spartan SGX coach, who helped me prepare for the Spartan Sprint I ran about a year ago.  Although I’m not training on obstacles per se - I’m doing rigorous strength and conditioning work with him, and its been SUPER rewarding and fun.  I am sooo thrilled to be working my way back :)

So life, while enjoyable, had been relatively full and busy in recent weeks.  I don’t think we realized it, but we were going a mile a minute, doing lots and lots of different things, jumping from one activity or pursuit to another, and not getting a whole lot of rest.
Things were obviously about to change......
