Nil-Rae cursed under her breath. She'd been walking in this direction for over an hour now, the direction she was certain was going to bring her to the nearest village on this Force-forsaken rock, and had still not found any signs of civilization. Why her Master desired the treasure he spoke of was still a mystery and she replayed his last transmission over and over again in her head as she trudged through thick mud and foul-smelling water.
"There's an artifact hidden in a cave system deep beneath an old temple on the northern side of the planet. The temple has been used as a place of sun-worship for the last several decades, but it was once a Jedi temple and it is there you must go to find the artifact. I'll join you on the surface in a week's time once I've concluded an obligation I have in Telos."
A week! She was certain she would be lost or far worse by then if things continued the way they were going. And yet, still she continued on. If her Master had faith in her, then there was no question that she could do it. Even if it meant whining and complaining internally every step of the way. Readjusting her shoulder pack, she slowly withdrew her foot from a deep puddle, kicked as much of the mud off her boot as she could manage, and carried on.
She had just crested the hill that lead out of the swamp when she heard it: laser fire. It was far off in the distance ahead of her but there was no mistaking that sound. Darting behind a great tree, she peeked around the trunk to get a better feel of the situation. Were they firing at her? Had she stumbled into a territorial dispute? Where was the blaster fire even coming from?
She reached for a pair of binoculars from her pack and added their sight to her own as she scanned the forest. From the direction of the blaster fire, she saw two cloaked figures fleeing towards her. Pressing her back against the tree once more, she fingered the hilt of her lightsaber but stayed her hand just before leaping into the fray. These were strangers and she had no clue what their dispute with the other party was about.
One of the two figures, an older man with slightly graying brown hair, skidded to a halt just past her tree as he dove to take cover behind another one. His companion, a younger man who looked closer to her own age with more firmly brown hair, joined him quickly thereafter, instinctively taking cover behind the older man. Frowning, Nil-Rae took a moment to consider them, hoping her presence was not immediately detected in the event that they were as dangerous as their pursuers. A blaster bolt pelted her tree from the other end and the smell of burnt wood singed her nostrils, drawing her gaze for the briefest moment.
She didn't need to turn back around to know she'd been discovered; she could feel twin pairs of eyes bearing down on her. She took a breath, calming herself a moment, before reaching out along the waves of the Force to feel the tension between the pair of strangers. Despite their haggard looks and suspicious circumstances, she felt no malice or ill-intent from either of them. She gave a firm nod as she made eye contact with the older man. Gesturing towards the sound of blaster fire, she pulled her cloak a little more tightly around her and withdrew a blaster of her own from her left hip.
"Friends of yours?"
(@misfittcd's plotted starter. For Qui-Gon and Obi-wan!)
