This looks like some sort of wild character arc and on one hand it kind of is but on the other hand I didn’t become a full time Spotify user until mid 2019 and I had a full blown identity crisis for all of 2017. But now that I’m thinking it out in previous years I listened to pretty much everything big-umbrella alternative so what you can’t see in these graphics is that this is really a journey back to myself.
Some fun stats:
- There are twenty artists represented in thirty top artist spots. The Wonder Years is ranked most at four years. Future Teens appears in three, and Hot Mulligan, Sufjan Stevens, Stand Atlantic, Frankie Cosmos, and Daisy the Great all appear twice.
- There are 22 artists represented in thirty top track spots. Seven of these artists are not ranked in any year: Bad Bad Hats, Julia Nunes, Local Natives, mansionz., The 1975, Wilson Phillips, State Champs, Waterparks, and Heart Attack Man. The Wonder Years and Daisy the Great have three ranked tracks, and Frankie Cosmos, Grayscale, Hot Mulligan, and Future Teens all have two.
- Of my top artists, I’ve seen nine live: Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, The Wonder Years (x9), Daisy the Great, Soccer Mommy, Future Teens (x5), Hot Mulligan, Origami Angel (x4), and Sincere Engineer. If including unranked artists with top tracks I’ve also seen State Champs and Heart Attack Man (x2).
Some fun facts:
- I went to a historically women’s college 2015-2019 and it shows
- I have absolutely no memory of ever listening to Frankie Cosmos. I didn’t at the time either. Tbf i did get sober in December 2019 but I was literally so shocked they made the top 5 twice lmao
- an honest to god catholic monk who found me on Twitter randomly mailed me free tickets to a The Wonder Years show in October 2019 and future teens opened and I had never listened to them but I was so captivated by their performance I immediately bought a ticket to another one of their shows 3 weeks later and the whole ordeal changed the trajectory of my entire life
- my car only had a CD player until 2019 so I very stubbornly listened to the 150+ CDs I kept crammed in every crevice of my shitty and beloved 03 ford focus (mostly mixtapes I made myself using youtube converter). I insisted this was the only proper way to listen to pop punk and emo “for the vibes”. When I finished college I treated myself to a new car stereo with bluetooth and the car ended up dying 4 months later. Current car is 10 years newer and came with Bluetooth. I miss the intentionality that came with burning CDs. 80 minutes of music arranged to play in a cohesive order. I still make Spotify playlists this way sometimes, but it’s not the same. I was also, just, like, admirably committed to completing a time-consuming task solely for my own enjoyment.
Some more fun data:
- My top 2 songs this year both had more plays than my top song last year
- I also track on last.fm and my top artists #5-7 were all within 50 scrobbles of one another (Hot Mulligan, Heart Attack Man, Spanish Love Songs) but there’s a 500 scrobble cliff after that
- every single one of my top tracks was in a different order for the same time period on last.fm
- similarly my top genres are very different between Spotify and last.fm for this year but I think they just categorize music differently
Anyway if you’re still reading this concludes me being insufferable on the internet for at least a few hours

Anticipation.
Happy New Year! Did y’all enjoy your 2018 stats? We wanted to check in and let you know what we’re looking forward to in 2019, film-wise and otherwise.
First off, we are very close to launching push notifications for iOS and Android. All the dopamine hits can be yours! This will roll out as soon as we have completed the necessary safety checks. Stand by for an imminent launch.
Secondly, films. Films, films and more films. Get your 2019 “most anticipated” lists in order with the help of this 2019 tag and our official most anticipated in 2019 page, based mostly on what you all have in your collective watchlists. Predictably the top end is crammed full of superheroes and mutants, plus Tarantino and Scorsese. For something a little different, check out our own Crew Picks for 2019. Honestly, we could have chosen 50 but stopped at ten for sanity’s sake. And yes, we’re aware The Modern Ocean probably won’t be a reality this year but we can dreeeeeaaaaam.
We’ve also put together a list of 25 anticipated films by women directors in 2019, using a combination of what you’re most looking forward to, what our crew are waiting for, and what wider critics and film festivals have pegged as ones to watch.
We’ll know soon enough how some of these anticipated films will land: Sundance is in session, with the Berlinale and SXSW not far behind. Follow along with some of the Letterboxd folk who are at Sundance this year, or check in on the sundance-2019 tag. (Our West Coast editor Dom Corry will be firing through some reports this week.)
Planning to watch the 91st Academy Awards despite feeling personally attacked by all the snubs? We’ll be there with you, tweeting along during the ceremony. You should also bookmark the comments thread on this list of all nominated films, as that’s where we’ll invite community discussion on the day. (Hot damn, those push notifications are gonna come in handy!)
Finally, as our 2018 Year in Review disappears in the rear-view mirror, a few highlights as noted by the Letterboxd team:
The mix of films in the overall Top 50 Highest Rated is a useful snapshot of where filmmaking is at in 2018: from the variety of genres to the slowly growing number of non-white protagonists, to the 11 women-directed films (up from last year’s three—and a much better statistic than this year’s zero female director Oscar nominees). It seems Hollywood is incrementally starting to resemble the rest of the world. We point this out because, as the Letterboxd community writes, time and again in your reviews, we are suckers for representation—and frankly, it doesn’t seem to affect box office negatively.
On that note, the non-English languages represented hard in the top films of 2018: Roma’s characters speaking in Spanish and Mixtec, Shoplifters in Japanese, and the people of Wakanda in isiXhosa, not to mention the non-verbal language of “Spidey-sense”.
2018 was a huge year for studios and superheroes: from the celebration of Black Joy and the afrofuturist art of Black Panther to the absolute explosion of the comic book style in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Letterboxd member reviews suggest what’s working is the attention to storytelling within the blockbuster form, whether it’s the brilliant reimagining of what makes a ‘bad guy’ tick in Black Panther or the subtle examination of the Brooklyn middle school system in Spider-Verse.
Some things never change: Scarlett Johansson was our most watched actress again (with the great Danai Gurira—Black Panther’s Okoye—close behind), and Samuel L. Jackson was our most watched actor, again.
This last fact made us curious about 2019 for Johansson and Jackson. Looking at Jackson’s slate, which has already kicked off with M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, he is undoubtedly on the fast-track to most watched again. He’ll be back as Nick Fury in Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far from Home, and he stars as John Shaft II in the new Shaft sequel/reboot, sandwiched between Richard Roundtree’s John Shaft and Jesse T. Usher’s John Shaft Jr. Then there’s Todd Robinson’s The Last Full Measure, and The Banker, a drama about 1950s entrepreneur Joe Morris, one of the first African American real estate scions.
Scarlett Johansson, meanwhile, is keeping 2019 slightly more chill with just three anticipated releases while she preps her Black Widow feature film: Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, Avengers: Endgame, and an untitled Noah Baumbach project.
Onward, film lovers!
Tumblr media
Roman Griffin Davis, Taika Waititi and Scarlett Johansson in a scene from ‘Jojo Rabbit’. Header: Nicole Kidman in ‘The Goldfinch’, Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Joker’, Brie Larsen in ‘Captain Marvel’, Linda Hamilton in the untitled Terminator sequel, Lupita Nyong’o in ‘Us’.

Twitter’s New 280 Character Limit: Double the Pleasure or Double Trouble?
Last week Twitter doubled the character limit on tweets, bringing the max length of a tweet to 280 characters.
youtube
Yippee! Has Twitter doubled the pleasure and doubled the fun of using Twitter? Results are still pending…
Why Double?
When Twitter started out in 2006, it based its character limit on the number of characters that could fit in an SMS: 160. Twitter allotted 20 characters for the username, leaving 140 for the tweet itself.
For some time now Twitter’s been playing with extending the length of tweets. In 2016 Twitter made @mentions (that are auto-added when replying), images, GIFs and videos not included in the 140 character count.
All that rich media wasn’t around when Twitter started. The new need to fit a video plus a poll plus say something about them within the 140 characters was cramping users’ style. That change was mostly welcomed by the Twitter world (as you can see in this Buffer post and comments).
In September 2017 they announced a beta test giving double the characters to tweeters using the Latin alphabet (like English, Spanish, French, etc.). Languages like Japanese and Korean cram a lot more meaning into fewer characters – only 0.4% of tweets from those language routinely hit the current character limit! – so they would stay with 140 characters.
From Beta to Better?
This month, November 2017, Twitter announced that the beta test had been very successful and they were planning on rolling the 280 character limit out worldwide
Far fewer tweets hit the character limit, indicating to Twitter that “people spent less time editing their Tweets in the composer. This shows that more space makes it easier for people to fit thoughts in a Tweet, so they could say what they want to say, and send Tweets faster than before.”
After an initial spike of tweets hitting the limit – as people experimented with “exactly how much CAN you write in a 280 character tweet?” – most tweeters settled back to their regular patterns of brevity. Only 5% of tweets went above 140 characters and only 2% went above 190 characters.
Losing the Benefits of Brevity
While it seems from the above stats that we’re not in danger of having our tweet streams overrun by super-long tweets, many long-time Twitter users are still mourning the move to 140 characters.
“Brevity’s been the soul of Twitter, for me,” said author William Gibson. “The 140-character limit has been a masterclass in concision and economy.”
If you’re trying to master Rule 13 (“Omit needless words!”) of the classic Elements of Style, being forced into conveying a complete thought in a 140 character limit is wonderful practice. Necessity breeds creativity and sensitivity to language. With the relaxation of the limit, conveying thoughts may, indeed, be easier, but refining thoughts may be harder.
Tweet Away
Expanded tweets are here to stay. As we get used to the new standard, we’ll likely find some disappointing results – and some surprising benefits.
What have youfound so far?
