The tickets should be at will call! Let me know if you have any trouble, we’re headed out for warmups in a few

Cass shoved her phone back into the back pocket of her pants, turning to Samaira. “He put them at will call, which is,” she scanned the front of Barclay’s, “right there.” Samaira followed her to the counter. “Hi,” she said as the ticketing agent called for the next in line, sliding her license under the glass. “There should be two for Cassidy Shaw.” The agent nodded, reaching over to leaf through a filing box and pulling out the envelope. “Enjoy the game!”

Samaira looked over as Cass handed her her ticket, eyeing the long line to get through the metal detectors. “What kind of seats did he get you?”

Cass shrugged. “I’m not sure. He said they were good ones? Somewhere lower bowl, mid-ice I think.” Just got them, be in in a few! See you soon, she sent back to Mat.

She tugged on the collar of her Rangers jersey, ignoring the occasional dirty look thrown her way. It was only one borough over, so she was far from the only fan in blue and red, and she couldn’t deny that there was a part of her that was looking forward to seeing Mat’s reaction when he saw her in their rival’s colors. It was too early into her and Mat’s relationship for her to be wearing his jersey to games; she wouldn’t want to curse anything prematurely, but jerseys could run upwards of two hundred dollars, and she didn’t exactly have that kind of money to go spending on just anybody. Not that Mat was “just anybody,” but Cass was someone who thrived on stability and she wanted to be sure.

The usher at the doors scanned their tickets, and it was only then that Cass bothered to look down at hers to see where they were headed. She was familiar enough with the layout, it wasn’t her first Rangers-Islanders game and had been to a Lorde concert her first year in law school. Walking down the stairs, they kept going, and kept going, and kept going. Until they were right at the glass behind the home bench. Samaira whistled. “Boy came through.”

Cass nodded, smiling apologetically as the pair squeezed past the others in their row. “I’m not sure how he got them, these ones are usually sold out months in advance. Or some rich guy has them for season tickets.”

Samaira raised an eyebrow. “As much as you hate to admit it, he’s kinda a big deal around here, Cass,” she said, leaning over to her. “I don’t think it’s that hard for him to get seats on a week’s notice.” Not only was Samaira one of her best friends at school and the only one who had the night free, but she was also a born-and-raised New Yorker — and a huge Islanders fan. Mat told her that he’d set aside two tickets, and it didn’t take Samaira more than a minute to respond in all caps when Cass asked if she’d be interested. The guys were nearly done with warmups, and it only took a minute or so for Mat to notice her, raising his eyebrows and looking pointedly at her jersey.

“Sorry,” Cass mouthed, shrugging her shoulders. Smiling, he shook his head, skating back to the blue line to take another shot. Cass excused herself to go to the bathroom after warmups had finished, her phone lighting up with yet another text right as she finished drying her hands. Traitor. She laughed. You knew what you were getting yourself into, Barzal 🤷🏽‍♀️

She got back to her seat just as the players were skating back out, handing Samaira one of the two beers she had picked up on the way. “Don’t spill,” she said ruefully. “These were like ten bucks each.”

After lineups and the national anthem, they sat back down, and the puck dropped.

Much to her chagrin, the Islanders had won 3-2, but Mat had netted two points, one of which was an absolute beauty over Lundqvist’s left shoulder. So she really couldn’t be that mad. As much as Cass would have loved to stay and congratulate Mat on the win, it was ten o’clock and she really needed to head home if she wanted to get back anytime before midnight. Walking back to the train, she figured Mat would be done with postgame interviews and risked a call. He picked up on the first ring.

“What’s up?”

Cass smiled. “Hey, Mat. I’m sorry I couldn’t stay and see you after,”

“Don’t worry about it, babe, I know you’ve got a long ride home.” The pet name slipped easily from his lips, and Cass felt her heart skip a beat. “It means a lot that you wanted to come.”

“Of course, why wouldn’t I? You had a great game, that goal was incredible. I’m fine with you winning against my team if you’ll do it like that every time.”

“I’ll convert you if it’s the last thing I ever do.” He deadpanned. They talked for as long as they could, until Cass had to swipe her metrocard and was about to lose reception. “Talk to you later?” Mat asked hopefully.

Cass giggled. “If I’m not passed out, sure. Promise me you’ll get some sleep too?”

“Promise.”

Samaira lived on the same line as her, getting off with a hug and a promise to meet up for lunch on Monday. Cass had taken the route at night a hundred times, but it was just as much second nature for her to keep a hand on her pepper spray as it was to keep refreshing her Instagram feed.

As soon as she made her way up the stairs into the cool Bronx air and back to the land of cell reception, a text from her dad popped up. It had entirely escaped her mind that sitting right behind the bench meant that she and Samaira would have had plenty of airtime on the networks broadcasting the game, or that there was a 100% chance her dad was watching. He had taken a picture of the TV when she just so happened to be smack-dab in the middle of the screen, grimacing at what she guessed must have been another Islanders goal. And how did you get those tickets? Were they from the internship?

Cass let herself into the apartment, waving goodnight to Ryanne, who was watching Netflix in the living room, and tried to formulate an answer. No, not from work. They were a gift.

From?

The person I’m seeing. Cass hadn’t told her family about Mat yet. It’s not that she thought they would disapprove, but she wanted to make sure that it was real, really real, before she let her family in on it.

She could imagine her dad scratching his head. What kind of law student would have that kind of money? For that matter, what kind of person? Are you and Samaira together? Cass let out a laugh. Her parents knew Samaira and loved her to pieces, and she doubted they would have had any issue if she was dating her. But she wasn’t.

“Rip the bandaid off,” Cass whispered to herself as she shucked her coat off, leaving her in the jersey and leggings. Hahaha no, not her. They were from Mat. She added as an afterthought, Barzal.

You’re dating Mat Barzal?

I am.

Huh.

Guess the cat’s out of the bag?

Nov. 17 (tues)

Cass’s seminar leader for Native Law, Professor Davidson, had just emailed the class, cancelling that afternoon’s meeting. My daughter came down with the flu, she had said. It wasn’t the cancellation that bothered her; obviously, if you have a sick kid, take care of your sick kid. It was the fact that now she had four hours to kill and no idea how to spend them. If she went home, that was an hour’s trip either way, so what was the point? And as much as she genuinely did love the library (and she really loved libraries), she knew those chairs and knew that her ass would start hurting somewhere midway through hour 3. As if on cue, Mat called. He had left for a West Coast roadie a few days earlier, and wouldn’t be back for almost a week.

“Hey!” She said brightly. “Congrats on the win last night, I would have called but I definitely fell asleep somewhere during the second intermission.” The Islanders had beaten the Ducks 4-2 the night before, but the time difference meant that it finished well past midnight, and Cass had been up early.

She heard him laugh on the other end. “Nah, no problem. I’m glad you caught it though. How has your day been?” One of the things Cass had grown to appreciate the most about Mat, even in their short time together, was how deliberate he was. He didn’t just ask her how she was or how her day was going because that was the standard “boyfriend” question of the day, he asked because he genuinely wanted to know. Because he cared.

So she was honest with him. “So-so. Yoga was great, they had my favorite instructor which was pretty nice. Good meeting after. Got a croissant. But then one of my classes got cancelled, so I’ve got to either find some coffee shop to work at or park myself at the library, neither of which is sounding too appealing at the moment.”

“Why don’t you just crash at my place?” Mat asked, like it was the most obvious question in the world. “It’s closer, I’ve got coffee and stuff if you want.”

Cass was taken aback for a moment. It wasn’t like the thought hadn’t crossed her mind, momentarily, but she didn’t think that they were there yet. She had been to his apartment before, once, under very different circumstances. Mat had tried, valiantly, to cook pasta and roasted veggies for dinner. Tried being the key word. The vegetables had all been burnt to a crisp, and he had thought the pasta was supposed to be cooked for 18 minutes, not 8, causing it to more closely resemble pudding than pasta. They ended up ordering Italian from the place down the street. But having a stay-in date at someone’s apartment and letting them crash there alone were two very different things, and Cass was touched not only by the offer, but by the fact that he trusted her enough to extend it. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah, of course, Cass. I want you to be comfortable. My spare key’s left with the front office, I’ll call them and let them know you’ll be picking it up. Shouldn’t be a problem. You remember how to get up there, yeah?”

“Mhm. Thanks, Mat, for real. You totally didn’t have to do this.”

“But I wanted to. Listen, morning skate’s about to start so I’ve got to go, but text me if you have an issue getting up. Or, like, if you forget where the bathroom is or something,” Mat added as an afterthought.

Cass laughed. “I think I can manage to find it, but thank you for the offer? Talk to you later.”

“Later.”

Half an hour later, Cass was curled up on his living room couch, a pot of coffee brewing in the kitchen and her books sprawled haphazardly on the coffee table. She spotted one of his hoodies slung over the armchair on the other side of the room. I don’t think he’ll mind if I steal it.

Nov 23 (mon)

The team had gotten back from the roadie around noon, and Mat had insisted on taking Cass out for dinner after she got off from work. “It’s been almost a week since I’ve seen you,” he had bemoaned on the phone earlier. Shaking her head and laughing internally at how needy her boyfriend was, she agreed to meet him at a Mexican restaurant a few blocks away.

She arrived just a few minutes before him, kissing him as they sat down. Grabbing a basket of chips, she headed over to the salsa bar. “How good are you with spice?” She asked Mat.

“I can hold my own, as long as it’s not like a Carolina Reaper or something crazy like that,” he answered, cracking a smile.

She laughed in response, setting the cups down on the table. Her enchiladas and his pozole came later, and Cass blushed at the knowing glance their waitress gave her as she slid the dishes onto the table. “How does it stack up?” Mat asked after she had taken a few bites.

Cass nodded happily. “It’s good. Really good. Obviously, I’d be disowned if I didn’t say that my grandma’s is better, but this is a close second.” Mat sipped his horchata. Cass had balked when he said he’d never tried the drink before, and his glass was now near-empty.

“Yeah, glad to hear it. This is super good too,” he said, eating another spoonful. She could tell something else was on his mind.

“What is it, chou?” Cass asked.

Mat bit his lip. “You’re still good to come to the game against the Canes tomorrow, yeah?” She nodded. “How would you feel about sitting up in the box?” Her brow furrowed. The box? Sensing her confusion, Mat continued. “Up with the other girls.” Cass knew that there was a box for the WAGs, obviously, but it hadn’t quite hit her that she was one now. She had met Paige, Beau’s girlfriend of six months, a few weeks prior, but that had really been more of an accident than anything. They had been walking around the Central Park Zoo one weekend, one of their first official dates, and happened to run into the other couple somewhere around the lemurs. It being lunch and the boys being boys, the group stopped for some sandwiches. Cass and Paige got to talking, chirping the boys for their sub-par “disguises” — “Since when has sunglasses and a baseball cap fooled anyone?” Paige had asked. Cass had laughed, they had exchanged numbers, and been talking ever since.

So, there was going to be at least one person she knew there. Why not, then? “Yeah, sure, sounds fun!” Cass said, nodding and tapping her fingers on the table, trying to get her nerves out.

Mat ran a hand through his hair, smiling nervously as if he hadn’t been too sure of what her answer would be. “Good,” he said, leaning down to pick up a bag. “Would have made this pretty awkward if you said no.” He handed it to her; she hefted it, trying to tell what was inside.

“Ooooh,” she said, “I didn’t know we were at the ‘presents’ stage of our relationship yet.” Mat blushed.

“Didn’t really cost me anything,” he mumbled.

“It’s got some weight to it. Soft. I’m going to go with...a mink stole.”

Mat looked baffled. “I’m not even going to pretend to know what that is.”

Cass laughed, untying the piece of ribbon that held the handles together. She pulled out a navy and orange jersey. “It’s one of the ones from my rookie season, figured I couldn’t have you going up there wearing another Rangers jersey. Didn’t want to throw you out to the wolves.” It was only then that she shook it out and turned it over. Barzal - 13.

Cass beamed, leaning over the table and kissing him on the cheek. “I love it, chou.”

Nov. 24 (tues)

Cass glanced at her watch. 6:38. The train was running on schedule, so she still had a little bit of time before she was supposed to meet Paige up in the box. She had offered to wait for her outside of the arena and walk her up, but she had driven Tito earlier and Cass didn’t want her to be stuck outside waiting for her. The car was packed with orange, blue, and white-clad fans, so nobody paid her any mind as she pulled out Mat’s jersey from her bag, switching out from the fleece she had been in all day. Are you sure it won’t be weird if I wear a jersey? Don’t most of the others show up to these things in dresses and shit? Cass had frantically texted Paige late last night.

Don’t worry! She had responded. Some do, yeah, but it’s def not uncommon to be in a jersey. I’ll be wearing Beau’s :)

It didn’t take long to get through security, showing her pass to the employee at the elevator and shooting Mat a good luck text, she let Paige know she was on her way up. Mat had given her the box number, so she made her way up to the suite, nervously smiling at the usher. “Hi,” she said.

The usher gave her a quick once-over and a curt smile. “Hi. Name?”

“Cassidy Cabrera Shaw, um, Mat Barzal should have added me.” She scanned the clipboard, making a tiny checkmark next to her name.

“Enjoy the game.” Cass tentatively made her way in, searching for Paige but still a little thrown off. It hadn’t escaped Cass the way the usher had looked at her, like there was something just a little off about her, like she didn’t quite belong.

It was a good thing that she didn’t have enough time to get too into her head, because Paige came barreling at her, wrapping her in a massive bear hug. “You came!!” She said, squeezing Cass’s hand once she finally released her.

Cass laughed. “Did you think I’d skip out on you?”

Paige shook her head. “No, I knew you’d come through.” She pointed to the hooks on the wall, where a mixed bunch of purses, scarves, and coats were hanging. “You can leave your bag there, let me get you a drink and introduce you to the other girls.” Cass followed Paige into the main room, where a dozen or so women milled about, sitting on couches and keeping an eye on the warmups below. Paige nodded at the bar. “What are you feeling? White? Red? Sparkling? I can make a mojito if you want. It won't be good, but if you’re desperate,” she shrugged her shoulders.

Cass threw her head back, laughing. “If they’re picking up the tab?” She replied, tilting her head towards the ice, “Give me the best champagne you’ve got.”

Paige grabbed a flute. “Yes, ma’am.”Pouring the champagne, she handed it to Cass, leading her over to where a group was hanging by the window. “Hey guys!” She said brightly, one hand touching the back of Cass’s shoulder reassuringly. “Girls, this is Cass. Cass, this is Lauren, Kerry, and Karley,” she said, pointing to each woman in turn. Lauren pulled her into a tight hug.

“Lauren Rodych Eberle,” she said, “Paige told us you’d be coming along. It’s great to have you.” The other girls introduced themselves, leading her over to a corner of the room. “These are the comfiest couches,” Kerry noted. “You always want to grab them as soon as you get up, they’re a hot commodity.”

Cass laughed. “Good to know.”

“So you’re Mat’s girl, yeah?” Kerry asked.

“Yep,” Cass replied, trying and failing to roll up the sleeves on Mat’s — her? — jersey.

She smiled. “I’m happy. He’s a great guy, don’t get me wrong, but could use a girl to balance him out. Bit of a himbo, but,” she lowered her voice conspiratorially, “almost every hockey guy is.”

Cass nearly snorted out her champagne. “Fair statement.”

Kerry took a sip of her own wine. “So, Paige said you’re in law school, yeah?” Cass nodded. “What’s that like?” If Mat could talk about hockey for hours on end and still not get through half of what he wanted to say, that was Cass with the law. It was refreshing to talk with a person who wouldn’t constantly try to interject with their own theory of jurisprudence or Constitutional interpretation, just someone who was genuinely interested in what she had to say.

The team had managed to extend their win streak to 3, a wraparound from Nelson that just squeaked past Reimer clinching the 2-1 win in the third minute of overtime. Everyone let out a collective cheer, some gathering their things and others hanging back to mingle. Cass meandered back over towards where Paige was waiting by the door; they didn’t have to rush since the guys probably hadn’t even finished showering yet, but the plan was to meet them down by the locker room.

“How’d you like it?” Paige enquired.

“It was really nice,” Cass answered genuinely. “I love going to these things with friends, but it’s nice to be around people who know the game and know the guys.”

“That’s the whole point,” Paige said easily. “We’re all in the same boat, even if some peoples’ home or work lives look different, nobody quite ‘gets’ this whole thing like each other.” Paige led her down elevators and corridors until they were nearly at the home team locker room. “Oh!” She exclaimed, causing Cass’s to snap around and look at her, startled. “No, nothing bad,” she added hastily. “Usually once or twice a roadie, the wives of a veteran or captain will host a family watch party. A lot of the partners and kids will come over, it’s really cute. Obviously don’t blow off work or something to come, but I’ll let you know.”

Cass smiled. “That would be nice.” The locker room door opened, players starting to filter out.

Anthony came out before Mat, giving Paige a kiss on the top of her head and smiling at Cass. “Mat should be out in a minute,” he added. She thanked him, congratulating him on his first-period goal.

True to Tito’s word, Mat appeared soon after, embracing Cass. “What’s that dumb look on your face?” She asked, seeing Mat’s satisfied grin.

“You’re wearing my jersey.”

“Well, yeah,” Cass said slowly. “You gave it to me.”

Saying their goodbyes to Tito and Paige, Mat tangled his hand with hers. “Nothing. You look good in it.”

Nov. 25 (wed)

The coffee tasted bitter in her mouth, but the much-needed caffeine jolt it gave her was enough for Cass to choke it down, shoving her cup — the white-and-blue one Mat had given her — into its spot on the center console of her white Escape. Cheryl had been with her since just before her freshman year of high school, the culmination of summer jobs, graduation gifts, and a used car lot. It wasn’t practical nor economical for her to drive most places in New York, so she usually sat in the parking lot of their apartment building unless one of the girls needed to run out at night or Cass was driving back home, as was the current case. It was the day before Thanksgiving, and she had a two hour drive (if she was lucky) and hours of cooking ahead of her before the clock ever struck Thursday.

Digging into the CD holder, she handed over the toll to the attendant at the station, giving as grateful a smile as she could muster when the toll arm lifted. Mat was going to call after practice, promising to keep her company on the drive up. He had been a little pouty about her leaving for the better part of a week so soon after he had gotten home, but one reminder from her about how long his roadies could run had shut him up quickly.

Cass loved family, so Thanksgiving had always been one of her favorite holidays. Their house was hosting this year, and if Cass had any money to bet, she’d guess that as she drove, her mom was frantically running around the house, pulling out napkins and silverware and trying to figure out how to fit fifteen people in a two-thousand square foot house. While her mom’s side rarely made the trip up from Texas and Hermosillo, her dad was from a big New England Irish Catholic family that never let a single holiday pass by without celebration. Her dad’s parents meant Grandma Maggie and Grandpa Joe, which meant an inevitable barrage of questions as soon as anyone let slip that she wasn’t single anymore. Cass loved her grandma to pieces; really, she did. But she was going to want to know his name, where he worked, where he went to school, and his mother’s damn maiden name before she would give it a rest.

Her phone was hooked up to the car, so Mat’s call came straight through, interrupting her preferred driving music, a mid-2000s playlist starring copious amounts of early Lady Gaga. “How’s the drive going?” He asked.

“Uh, pretty good,” Cass replied, changing lanes to pass the sluggish Honda ahead of her. “Just crossed into Connecticut, I’m thinking it’ll be another hour or so? How was practice?”

Cass heard the door to his apartment close behind him. “Good, Coach had us run a lot of passing drills, so it’ll hopefully pay off next game.”

“Friday, right?” She asked. “Against the Caps?”

“Yeah, should be a good game. They’re doing really well this season, hopefully the boys come through, extend the streak a little bit.”

Cass smiled. “You’ll be great. I’m sorry I won’t be there to see you, but —”

She could imagine him shaking his head on the other end of the line. “Babe, you don’t need to apologize. Thanksgiving’s a big thing here, and I know it’s been awhile since you’ve really spent much time with your family.”

“Yeah,” Cass said, chewing her lip, “that’s true. Pretty much my dad’s whole side is going to be there though, so I’m prepared to spend a solid hour fielding questions about you and my whole ‘new relationship’ I’ve got going on. I think they’ll be disappointed you’re not there.”

Mat chuckled. “It’s fine, Cass,” he said, reassuring her. “Just promise them you’ll bring me next year.” Cass couldn’t stop a big, dumb grin from spreading on her face. Next year.

“I promise.”

How I got my first job

It was 2 months into the summer of ‘88. I had still not found a permanent job. Here I was, squeezing time from my summer teaching job at the college for a 3-day trip to St Louis for a couple of interviews. I will do a car trip in the Midwest. It will be a bit hectic since I have to be in three cities hundreds of miles apart in three days.

The first evening, I went from Sr Louis to St Joseph. I remember a beautiful moment of Americana - I am driving West, into my future, the sun is low in the large blue sky and the prairie is swaying all around me. I promised myself that I will take my time the next time.

I checked into a motel at St. Joseph, late at night. Next morning, I do the whole day interview for adjunct CS professor. I got to see the town on my way in, during lunch and on my way out. The town must have been quite a celebrity in its time - it is where the pony train started. To my untrained eye, It looked like the kind of place where one lived in America, Cute, pretty, prosperous, open, happy. And, to put the cherry on the cake, I would be close to my closest cousins. The winters would suck, the pay would be lower than I expected. But, at least - I won’t be forced into the minimum wage that was PhD.

The interviews went well. I liked the people. They seemed to like me. I could see myself in the role. I could be good. Teach fundamentals to fresh minds. Maybe being an adjunct will inspire me to stay in academia and apply for a PhD, like Vic. Not sure if I can invent something new, But, it would be fun if I really did.

I had not done well in the hiring season. I had been rejected a few times already. A friend had got an awesome package from DEC - one of the best computer companies in the world. Me, I did not even get an interview call from DEC.This interview, even if it was for much less money - was a welcome chance to hope in my luck. Of course, this hope could also turn out to be a mirage.

After the interview, I got on the road again. I had a long haul - it will be well past 1, by the time I get into chicago, for the interview next morning. But, like many well laid out plans, this plan unraveled. Dilipbhai and bhabhi were supposed to let me in. But, they were so exhausted with new baby - they slept right through the phone and the bell. I spent the night in the car - cold and hungry. Chicago nights get very cold, even in the middle of the night. I tossed and turned. Finally, bhabhi came and poked curiously at the car in the driveway.

I took a short nap since the interview place was nearby. But soon, I had to get ready and leave. The interview was a disaster. I was not well versed enough in hardware for their company. And, the lack of sleep did not help either, I am sure.

After the interview - I head to St. Louis. But, being so young and brash, I decide to take a detour to drop by on a girl who went to school at Notre Dame - a 4 hour detour. By the time I hit the road to St. Louis - it is late at night and I have to do an all night drive. I cant even stay over since Tushar needs his car the next morning.

I am so sleepy. I doze in the car. I pull off at a truck stop and slept for a few hours. I remember driving into St. Louis during morning commute. I could barely keep myself awake and drove really poorly. Totally like a DUI. Cars swerved around me. Horns honked around me. But somehow, I managed to avoid an accident and I reached home safe and sound. Tushar rushed off to work, I crashed out.

I had lunch with the kids. Parents were in India or somewhere else. Looking back on it - that was pretty rash behavior. I could have damaged their car, created huge liability, may have even killed someone or injured myself. But, even they did not dwell on these finer details. We had a good lunch and then they dropped me off to the airport.

While waiting at the airport, I get a phone call from St. Joseph’s - offering me $24,000 for a 9-month position. My first job offer. I was thrilled, even though I knew this was much less than what my buddies were getting in industry. I had not done as well as expected. But, hey, it was a job offer :-) Finally after 4 rejects.

I called my parents from the airport, early morning in India. My family was jubilant. Thankfully, they kept the disappointment unspoken. We all hoped something better shows up but no one wanted to say it - at least that’s what I felt. But, it was 5 times more money than graduate school. And I could keep looking for a job. At least, this is not a reject.

Thar summer, I sent my resume to hundreds of positions I found in the classifieds. I managed to get called for 5 job interviews. First one was in Ithaca. A research place. Very academic. Quite prestigious and well-paid. I had technical interviews and gave a well attended talk. I was feeling confident. Over lunch, we talked about our technical passions and I, feeling a bit too much camradarie - went a bit over-board with the truth about my attitude towards programming. They cited that as a reason why I was not a match for their company. I felt quite sheepish.

The second interview was at a real-estate software startup in some small town on the outskirts of Boston. They were two young men looking for a computer guy to build the PC package for them. They knew just enough CS to ask me what a pointer was. But, they could see that I was not going to cut it.

St Joseph’s was my 3rd interview and it had yielded my one and only job offer so far. The job at St Joseph started in 2 weeks. So, it looked like - those were my two options - St. Joseph or grad school at RI. And then, out of nowhere, I got a call from one of my IIT CS class mates, who was working at HP in California . We talked, he passed my resume and had a word with the hiring manager - Beth about my time constraints.

I got a a phone screen the very next day.I passed and they wanted an on-site interview next week. I said - can we do it this week instead? I will buy the tickets and take care of my hotel. They can reimburse later, if they hire me. They were gracious enough to accommodate my unorthodox request. I had my interview scheduled for that Friday.

The interviews at HP were the best technical interviews of my life. I remember a long design conversation about showing large outputs with Jeff Vance. Chris Mayo also interviewed me. He was just like the old men in Woonsocket, but younger. He seemed so happy and deeply technical.The hiring manager took me out for dinner after the interviews. Anil had got the offer during dinner. I was hoping for the same. Halfway through the dinner - Beth set my expectations straight. HP would get back to me soon. No offer tonight.

That night, I was dejected. My string of rejects continues, I thought. But, we decided to put it away and make a night of it anyway in Santa Clara downtown. The next day we went to the city. Anil and Narinder gave me the tour of SF. Golden Gate bridge had a special connection for me because of my brother’s pictures from when he lived in SF in 1970. Next day, I flew back to RI.

Over the next few days, I lined up a car and the auto loan. All the paperwork was ready. The plan was ready to be set into motion at the last possible moment. I had till Wed. morning. If I do not hear from HP by then - I have to start spending money. I had the details worked out - sign the papers at the bank, drive to the dealer with Deepak, pick up the car, come back home - pack up the car and start driving West. I would reach St. Joseph by Friday - and start my job on Monday.

I had not heard from HP till Tue afternoon. Only 18 hours left. And, then Beth calls. She congratulates me and makes me an offer. I remember considering negotiating the pay, before realizing my straits and blurting my acceptance.

The long ordeal of job hunting had come to a happy ending. I had met the expectations..I had landed the job I “deserved”. I was on the road to Green Card. I will not have to be a poor graduate student for another year. Now, I can cancel my plans for being on the road. Instead, I can plan a vacation. Oh, happy times.

My starting date was a month away - two weeks after the start of school. I had a bunch of money saved up for the move. Money I did not need now, since HP will move me and put me up. I decided against going to India and instead stayed at home. Ganesh and Ramesh were around and soon enough the new year will start and everyone will be around. There are too many anecdotes about that month. There was a reunion with my high school friends. There were all night teen-patti nights. Ganesh and I got thrown out of a bar. I will write another story around that.

The good times were here finally All that studying and watching planes fly and dreaming had completed. The final chapter of the dream had become real. I had everything I had been planning all my life for.

I was lucky to have these connections. People who made if affordable to go job hunting. People who lent me their car; people who put me up at their homes; People who put me in touch with other people; people who intervened on my behalf. It took a village. And, of course - the Asian Immigration Act.and the civil rights movement.

Things I Learned in Med School - Week 101

Oh man such an awesome awesome week.

This week was OT week for us - started off Monday morning with me assisting with c-section which was a little intense, esp as the patient had a post-partum haemorrhage. Luckily it was nothing major, though at one stage they did call another consultant to have a look, but by the time they got there everything had settled.

Tues/Wed I spent with gynae onc. One of the GO consultants is a little scary, but was happy to have me there... as long as I was happy to get pimped along the way. Although to be honest, the questions weren’t too bad. Part way through she needed extra help, and just turned and was like ‘go scrub’. There were a bunch of extra regs and residents there so I just kind looked to them - b/c lets be honest they’re going to be a lot more help than I am. But the reg was like ‘come scrub with me’, and after the main issue was dealt the reg even stepped back to let me help assist, which was really cool.

Then Wed we were either the other GO consultant, who I really think is awesome, and it was great cause it was an extra list - so its was just the consultant, reg and us med students - so we both got to scrub in which was awesome.

And then on Thursday I ended up watching a c-section list with just an unaccredited reg and resident, who got me to assist with pretty much their entire list. And then finally, I got to see a classical c-section for a placenta precreta, which was pretty awesome.

Overall the week just reminded me how much I love being in the OT. The whole idea of being surgeon actually really interests me - I even a really great idea of what path I would take as well (Gen Sx then either a head/neck or endocrine fellowship), that I ended up talking to my MD tutor (who is a Prof of transplant Sx) hoping he would talk some sense into me... but instead of talking me out of Sx he was like ‘Yes totally go do it if you like it”. He did discuss some of the cons of doing surg - like his kid’s being asked if their parent’s were divorced cause he was never around, and the fact that as a field its still pretty misogynistic and that I will need to be better and will probably not be given as many breaks, but if its what really has interested me than I should definitely pursue it. And then the next day I was at a surgical workshop and had another discussion with another surgical prof who was basically like - ‘you tying knots really well and should pursue a speciality that allows you to tie knots’, and then had another discussion about surg as a career path.

At the end of the day, I really have ages to make a decisions, and maybe in 2 - 3 years time my life and priorities may be very different, but at this point in time I’m definitely leaning more towards a surgical career than I ever imagined.

Anyway, here are some things I learned in med school this week:

1. The risk for end-stage kidney disease in lower in people who have donated one of their kidneys, compared to the general population.

2. For every 1 kg of weight gained in pregnancy above the recommended, there in a 10% increase in risk to the pregnancy

3. CMV retinitis is sometimes described as a ‘cheese and tomato pizza’ hemorrhage

(remind me not to buy pizzas from where the ophthalmologist’s do)

PENNSYLVANIA

2021 Jul 18 (Sun) - It rained all night long. We heard a tree branch fall somewhere nearby but it didn’t hit us. We found it landed near a camper next to us but no one got hurt and it missed their camper.

We drove into town to get fuel this morning. We had to come back up that long hill but Paul’s repair held. Hopefully, it will do well with the trailer and get us to a dealer repair service in Bath tomorrow. Paul super glued the split, put some rubber over it, then some hard plastic over that, and clamped the entire repair.

We all drove over to Eagles Mere. It was a small quaint historic town. We strolled around the area and bought lunch. There was a lovely old church that Paul and I explored.

We had a delightful campfire tonight.

2021 Jul 17 (Sat) – We didn’t have far to drive today (84 miles), so we waited until 11 AM to leave. Unfortunately, the campground was having a new gate installed that jammed up traffic. In addition, it cut down on the space available to the big rigs to swing out. Hank’s rig got hung up in the turn and he had to get out, unhook his tow, and back up. There was quite a traffic jam as cars and rigs tried to get in and out of the campground.

In the meantime, Rick & Brenda and we had already pulled out. We drove slowly, waiting for Hank and Joe & Diane to catch up. We went through several small towns and bad roads until we finally got on the interstate. While climbing a very long hill on I-80, we heard a pop and lost power. Paul said we blew the turbo (a VERY expensive part of the engine).

We arrived at Pioneer Campground in Laporte/Muncey Valley at 3 PM. The drive was much longer than we had expected due to all the problems we had starting out. The campsites are all very close together and getting into our assigned spaces was challenging but we all did it. Once parked, Paul popped the hood to look at the engine and discovered a split in the hose connected to the turbo. Maybe the problem is the hose and not the turbo itself. I am praying that is so. It will be a LOT less expensive to replace that part. All the service centers in the area closed at noon and no one is open tomorrow. We will limp into Bath on Monday. In the meantime, Paul put a piece of rubber over the split and clamped the ends. Let’s hope that will get us to Bath.

At 5:30 PM, we went to the office to pick up our pre-ordered dinners. Paul and I had fried shrimp and a fried sampler basket of mozzarella sticks, corn poppers, pierogis and onion rings. We sat at the picnic table with Joe & Diane until it started raining. Thunderstorm warnings were ringing through on the phone. It rained pretty hard and steady.

2021 Jul 16 (Fri) – We went into Jim Thorpe with Joe & Diane for a ride on the Lehigh Gorge Railroad. It was 70 minutes and rode out and back through the Pennsylvania countryside. Sometimes, we could catch a glimpse of the river running alongside the tracks. The trees are full and it was hard to see past them.

After we got back, we walked up the hill to the Marion Hose Co. for lunch. It was a converted fire house. We had to sit outside and the sun made things very warm. Following lunch, we walked to St. Mark’s Church. It was built in the 1800s by Asa Packer’s widow, Sara. After her parents died, Mary Parker Cummings added on to the church. She even had an elevator put into the church, large enough to fit a coffin and 6 pall bearers. Ironically, she turned out to be the first person to use the elevator when she died a day before the elevator was done.

When we got back to the campground, we had happy hour in the pavilion. A thunderstorm rolled in and it poured hard for about 20 minutes. There were many puddles around the area.

2021 Jul 15 (Thu) – We went to WalMart this morning for groceries. When we got back, we went with Joe & Diane to the Asa Packer Mansion in Jim Thorpe. Hank met us at the house. Rick & Brenda went bike riding. It was a fascinating story of a very poor boy who grew up to become a multi-millionaire. The house was gorgeous but not overly ostentatious, like many of the other mansions of the rich and famous we have toured. The tour guide was an older woman (probably our age), but she was a hoot! She made the tour very enjoyable.

Following the mansion tour, we walked into town and had lunch at Antonio’s Pizzeria. The food wasn’t bad. Joe & Diane took off to do some shopping and we rode back to the campground with Hank.

At 4:30 PM, we took off with Joe & Diane to Saylorsburg to the Blue Ridge Winery to enjoy some wines and live music. It was almost an hour ride as we zig zagged through the countryside. Diane admitted her GPS might have been set on sightseeing mode. Lol. The winery was very large and very nice. We all got flights and traded sips from each other’s glasses. That was so nice rather than sitting there with our masks on afraid of one another. We got back to the campground around 9:30 PM.

2021 Jul 14 (Wed) – We drove to Pottsville with Hank and Rick & Brenda (Joe & Diane went to Mauch Chunk Lake on a hike) for a tour of the Yuengling Brewery. There was a large group of about 28 people on the tour. The tour guide was 7th generation Yuengling and was quite nervous. She was around 18 years old and talked very fast with frequent hand gestures and rambling points. The brewery is currently being run by a 5th generation son. The next generation coming in to this family owned business is all female. The tour took us through cool caves and up and down steep stairways. At the end of the tour, we all got to taste two beers. We returned to the campground and grilled dinner at 5 PM. After dinner, we did the laundry.

2021 Jul 13 (Tue) – We all drove to Hickory Run State Park today. The visitor’s center had a small display about the park. Then we walked the Shades of Death Trail. It was a 1.1 mile (2.2 miles roundtrip) trail full of rocks, boulders, and tree roots that wound its way up and down the mountainside. There were two waterfalls and some pretty steep and muddy parts. We didn’t quite make it to the end of the trail as it was a strenuous hike.

After we got back to the car, we drove to Boulder Field. This is a field full of boulders. If it was water, it would be a lake. The field was huge and there people walking all over the rocks. The field has formed over the years as ice and water have caused the boulders to crack. In addition, the field is moving as it sits on permafrost. It is such a fascinating natural phenomenon.

We then drove to Dom N Ali for lunch. It was a rustic lodge with a very nice restaurant and bar area. Paul and I and Hank took leftovers home, Joe & Diane and Rick & Brenda consumed all of their food.

When we got back to the campground, we enjoyed happy hour for an hour. Diane made Brussel sprouts to snack on and they were very good.

2021 Jul 12 (Mon) – We all went into the town of Jim Thorpe and walked around. It is a delightfully historic town with buildings over 100 years old. Many of the buildings are painted in bright pastel colors and the trim and bric-a-brac are carefully painted in detail. The roads are very narrow and there are plenty of small shops and restaurants to keep the tourists happy. The place has changed dramatically since we were last here in 2013.

Paul & I walked Race Trail with Joe & Diane until 11:30 when we went to Molly Maguires to meet the rest of the group for lunch. We sat out on the deck and enjoyed our meal. Then Joe & Diane left to take their car to the garage. We walked down Race Trail again, this time with Hank and Rick & Brenda in tow.

We walked a little further up the steep hill and stopped in to the Mauch Chunk Museum. The name of the town used to be Mauch Chunk. They used to be very rich with 13 millionaires on Stone Row. Then the times changed and the town fell on hard times. They were advertising for ways to raise money to help renew the town. Jim Thorpe’s widow, upon seeing the ad, approached the town and offered to infuse money into the town if they would rename it after her late husband. They built a very nice monument to the athlete and interred his body there. As promised, Mrs. Thorpe brought lots of money to the town and built an incredible church in honor of her late husband. Interestingly, they had been estranged at the time of her husband’s death.

2021 Jul 11 (Sun) – We packed up and again traveled down the road as a loose caravan. Joe & Diane left yesterday to go visit relatives in the area. It was Hank, Rick & Brenda and us in the group. It was a short ride as the next campground was only 84 miles away. The directions Paul had printed out didn’t work so well and we wound up pulling onto Main Street when we got into Jim Thorpe. It was a tight drive with our big rigs along the narrow roadway.

We pulled into Jim Thorpe Camping Resort at 12:30 p.m. The entrance was narrow and a sign told campers to register at the office. As we pulled in toward the office, some guy came out and said we were going to be “over there” pointing vaguely to the side and told us to back up. Now, if you have ever driven a big rig, you know that backing up is not an easy thing to do. In addition, the two motorhomes were coming in behind us. They both tow vehicles behind them and cannot back up without disconnecting the tow vehicles (referred to a “toads”). I got out and helped Paul back up, holding a hand out and telling Hank to wait. We got the RV backed up and turned down the side road, then had Hank and Rick & Brenda (who were sitting out on the road waiting for things to clear) pull over beside us. We then went into the office to sign in. Joe & Diane were already in the campground and stated they had asked to have their site changed because it was right beside the campground roadway. We all got our assignments and with a bit of jockeying and turning around, we found our spots.

Rick & Brenda had picked up corn at a market and we roasted that for dinner.

2021 Jul 10 (Sat) – We rented ebikes today and went for a ride around the Pennsylvania countryside with Rick & Brenda (who already own ebikes). It seems like every farm has a sign out to sell something – eggs, milk, vegetables, crafts, etc. Amish buggies passed us on the roads, as plentiful as the cars that sped by.

We had happy hour and barbecued burgers and corn on the grill for dinner.

2021 Jul 9 (Fri) – We stopped at a winery today. Rick & Brenda joined us. It wasn’t very good. We all went to dinner at Good N Plenty. It is an Amish restaurant where they serve the food family style. It was excellent. The waitress brought a cabbage slaw, ham salad, applesauce, apple butter, bread and butter for appetizer. Then she brought plates of food: fried chicken, ham steaks, mashed potatoes, roasted corn, and gravy. For dessert, she brought a slice of shoofly pie for us all to sample while we ordered additional sweets.

2021 Jul 8 (Thu) – We packed up and left Fort Belvoir, VA at 9:30 a.m. There were three of us traveling together: Joe & Diane and Rick & Brenda. We formed a loose caravan traveling down the interstate. It rained off and on during the drive. We arrived at the Beacon Hill Camping Resort in Intercourse, PA around 1:30 p.m. Hank was already there waiting for us. His wife is home taking care of her mother and will fly out to meet Hank when the caravan starts.

The campground is very tight and the sites are close together. We are on the road and next to a major road. The fireflies are magical at night. They seem to lift out of the grass like embers from a campfire. There are all kind of fowls running around as the campground is right across the street from a farm. There are geese, ducks, chickens, guinea hens, a turkey, and a peacock. They roam all around the campground. The smell of livestock is in the air.

post-trip

officially back from a vacation with my parents! it was quite a hectic schedule, so i was almost depleted of energy by yesterday. they flew in thursday - i coordinated with the tour to pick them up at the airport, and i met them there. they dropped us off at our hotel in elizabeth, NJ (arrived around 6pm) without any stop for dinner. i lyfted us to hoboken, NJ to have a pizza dinner and walk along the pier. it was my first time exploring hoboken, where my new friend S lives. we then took the PATH (my first time as well) to manhattan and walked around washington square park. it was dark by then, and there were a bunch of skaters and people partying/smoking weed lol. we just took a few photos and then went back to NJ.

friday: visited philly and washington DC. this day was packed but it was probably the most fun. the ratio of landmarks/sights to see to driving time was the best on this day. unfortunately, the congress was closed so we couldn’t do a tour like i did last time. however, we got to see it from the outside and other beautiful landmarks that i didn’t get to see previously. we also caught the sunset at the thomas jefferson memorial. our tour for this was about 15 people - mostly southeast asian (vietnamese, burmese, thai) and indian families. we were the only ones who spoke chinese. our tour guide was chinese burmese.

saturday: did the most driving this day. drove from DC area to niagara falls with stops in corning and seneca lake. picked up more people for this and had 36 on the bus. we had mcdonalds for lunch and even worse food for dinner. they brought us to the welcome center food court for dinner. by the time we arrived, there was only a couple restaurants open, and they’re all janky fast food places. we got something similar to panda express for like double the price. they sold bad boba for $8! and a combo plate for like $16! i thought it was a tourist trap made for tour buses like ours, but the building was located right across from the niagara falls state park. i found it odd that there was such a trashy food court for niagara falls. since the day was mostly on the road, my dad said it wasn’t fun. luckily, we got to go on a niagara falls night tour which was quite beautiful. it was a great way to end the long day.

sunday: visited the niagara gorge and whirlpool. we did a jet ski boat ride in the whirlpool, which felt like a roller coaster ride. my dad had a ton of fun on this haha but i didn’t particularly like it. it was too much rocking around and it made me have to go #2 afterwards. after this, we visited old fort niagara and lake ontario. then we did the maid of the mist boat ride to see the falls up close. this was the highlight of the niagara falls stop for me. it was such an incredible sight and fun to wear ponchos alongside everyone. the rest of the day was spent driving back to NYC area - we were dropped off at NJ.

monday: NYC tour - 6 people. the day started off well with a tour around wall street and one world trade center. everyone was in a good mood. afterwards, the tour guide informed us that the boat for statue of liberty was being repaired and we won’t be able to go. everyone was deeply disappointed as it was the main thing that they wanted to see in NYC. the mood turned sour and one of the vietnamese ladies complained to the company. we went to visit time square, united nations, 5th ave, ate ichiran, empire state building, and the MET. when my friend gabe came to visit earlier in the month, he mentioned that he couldn’t find statue of liberty tickets either so i thought the tour was telling the truth. however, i checked online and found that i was able to book tickets immediately. fortunately, i was able to book tickets for tues morning. there was so much drama revolving the statue of liberty - my guess is that since the tour for that is so long (~2-3 hours), it wouldn’t be profitable for the tour guides to take us, assuming they would have to find and pay for parking and there were just 6 of us. anyhow, we ate thai food for dinner and visited central park. i had planned on taking my parents on a gondola ride but things happened with the reservation (and also my parents were not interested at all - apparently the lake looks ugly to them) so we ended up not going. instead, we took the subway to my apartment! they were able to say hi to matt for a bit and see the rooftop. they looked like they felt sorry that i lived in such a small apartment lol. afterwards, we went to our hotel in chinatown to check in. it was dark by then ~8:30pm and chinatown seemed a bit more sketchy. we stopped by a convenience store in the area to buy some water. the guy at the register (very young - late teens/early 20s) was doing a line of coke when we walked in lol.

tuesday: this was our free day without the tour. i was the tour guide basically. we finally got to go to the statue of liberty and were actually the first to board the first boat at 9:30am! long story, but the vietnamese sisters we were with (ages 68 & 70 who were very quick and active for their age) were on the last day of their tour. their tour guide was trying to again dissuade them from going on the statue of liberty tour. my dad was kind enough to send them the info when we got to the site, and we let them know that they have ferries every 30 min and the line was not long at all. by fate, they ended up being the last ones to board our ferry and we reunited. afterwards, we hopped on their tour bus (since they “owed” us for the mishap yesterday) and asked them to drop us off in chinatown for lunch. we all ate pho at a vietnamese shop together. then, we parted ways. my parents and i walked a bit more around chinatown and then returned to our hotel. we then lyfted to my apartment and i sent them off to the airport afterwards via subway.

i felt relief after they left haha, since my host duties were done, and i look back on our pictures fondly. i’m so happy that my parents were able to come see the east coast. they kept saying that they’ve been wanting to go to niagara falls for 40 years (and NYC/statue of liberty) but just never made it happen. as we all grow older, i feel like i’m taking more responsibilities as their caretaker. i worry about them more often, like when i sent them on the subway to the airport scared that they were gonna encounter something bad on the subway or get lost. i had to rewear some of the same clothes this trip and felt so dirty. it was also difficult bc we switched hotels every single night. too much packing and unpacking. it felt like a lot of mental work for me taking care of my parents, figuring out the food, transportation, logistics, etc. i was hungry quite a few times during our tour (could be also due to my pickiness - i prefer to eat well during vacation instead of fast or processed food). during covid, the hotel’s breakfast was very limited. overall, i think going on the tour was a good choice for my parents instead of going on a trip ourselves. they enjoy meeting new people - it would’ve been too boring if it was just us three. however, if i were to do this trip again, i most likely would want to find a car to drive myself lol. would like to go back to DC and explore more! we took a toooon of pictures.

Lighter Next To Your Coffee Mug VII

It was late. Neil had already gone to bed, when his phone vibrated next to his bed. When had he stopped turning it off during the night? Two weeks ago? Three? The day Andrew had suddenly texted him? Possibly, he admitted and reached down to grab the stupid thing. One text from Andrew. Only one word:

‘tomorrow’

Why wasn’t he asleep? Neil rubbed his eyes and squinted at the screen. He had been stupid enough to leave his phone on. It would be pointless not to respond now.

‘okay. usual time/place?’

He yawned and the phone buzzed again.

‘yes.’

Well, okay then. Just as he had put it back down and turned around to find a more comfortable position, Andrew texted again. Curious, Neil reached for it again, lying on his stomach, fingers blindly searching for a moment.

‘I want this to become a weekly thing. y/n’

“Hmm?” Why the sudden change of mind? They hadn’t even seen each other last week. Andrew had admitted that he had actually needed to convince himself to text him last time. This was odd.

‘yes’

He wasn’t against it. They had proven that they could work together just fine the last time. Actually, he had expected Andrew to contact him sooner to be honest. He had been looking forward to it.

‘twice’

Something was off. He hesitated before he typed his reply.

‘I’m taking a turn: are you sober right now?’

It didn’t even take a minute for Andrew to reply but it felt so much longer.

‘no.’ Interesting. ‘so?’ He had known that Andrew was still using or maybe he was just drunk right now, Neil didn’t know. It was, however, the first time for them to talk like this. He wondered what Andrew was like when he took something. Would he smile and laugh? He should have asked what the man was taking. It was none of his business but he wanted to know. He also wanted to use this chance to talk to Andrew for a little longer.

‘one condition: stop overpaying me’

This might be stupid but it had actually started to bother him. He knew it was because he liked the man but he told himself that it was unprofessional to overcharge a client like that.

‘who’s gonna pay your rent if I pay you for kissing and hand jobs twice a week’

Did that mean they would keep it that way? Had Andrew given up on doing anything beyond what they had already tried? He hoped not.

‘I have other clients.’

‘I can afford you. stop seeing them’

That again. They had talked about this already. He wouldn’t change his mind. It was an absolute no go for him.

‘no.’

‘I hate sharing’

“So you keep telling me,” Neil said out loud. He smiled half-heartedly. All the things he could read into this, all those bad romance clichés. He remembered watching Pretty Woman with his mother one night and scoffed. He had hated that movie back then and he still thought it stupid today. Andrew just shrugged and opened the door all the way, before he turned around and let Neil in. He was rubbing his eyes and his movements were a little slower than usual. Neil was sure he had woken him. After closing the door and taking his shoes and jacket off, he found Andrew in the kitchen at the coffee machine. Neil studied his back, admiring the display of back and shoulder muscles under the soft fabric. This guy could throw a ball across the whole court with perfect aim. How many times had he fantasized about playing with him, being the backliner Andrew could rely on? There would be that little moment when Andrew would look at him, after catching a striker’s best shot, and he would know how goddamn fast Neil was. Andrew put two cups down onto the coffee table, claiming the sofa for himself, leaving Neil’s on the opposite side in front of one of the leather chairs. He took a sip, then leaned back, one arm resting on the back of the sofa and head falling back, glancing lazily from the ceiling down to his visitor.

“You have that look on your face,” he said, voice a little scratchy. “What are you thinking about?”

Neil blinked. He didn’t know he had a look. He grinned a little and shrugged. “Exy.” Andrew sighed and rolled his eyes before closing them for a moment.

“Figures.” He took another sip of coffee, then returned the cup back to the table. “Two freaks of a kind. Same obsessed brain, same look…”

Neil sat down opposite of Andrew. “Same as who?”

“Kevin,” Andrew said, as if it should be obvious. Neil couldn’t help but tense a little when he heard that name. A name from his past, a name that haunted his nightmares of the present, a name that nevertheless inspired awe in his waking moments –awe and resentment and fear. He tried to evade and changed the topic.

“It’s just daydreaming. I’m sure you do it too.”

“Maybe I do, maybe I don’t. Sure as hell not about Exy, though.” Neil cocked his head at that.

“But you must like it. Exy, I mean.” He couldn’t imagine someone being so good at something and not liking it. That was absurd. He would either have to love or hate it, there was nothing in between at that level.

“Says who? It’s just a game.” Neil wanted to protest at that but when he opened his mouth, Andrew cut him off. “Do you even play?” He sounded tired.

“I played little league. Quit in high school. Never made it far.”

“Any good?” It was a tricky topic for him. He could lie, but he wanted to talk about Exy with Andrew. He had always wanted to talk to him about Exy. He could talk about Exy all day if it was up to him. But it was dangerous. Too many details and Andrew would get clues and could figure out who he really was. He couldn’t let that happen. He shrugged.

“I guess. My parents never wanted me to play.” It wasn’t really a lie. His mother had not wanted him to play. His father had other plans for him in mind before he had decided to sell him to the Moriyamas. “I just couldn’t live without it, I guess.”

“So do you still play? You said you quit.” It somehow hurt to admit that he had run away from his team, from Exy.

“Just once a week with a bunch of random guys.” He didn’t mention the hours of training he did by himself. “I’m still a decent backliner.” He was a great backliner and he knew it.

“Most people would aim for striker.” Yeah, most amateurs with big dreams about fame would. Striker, quarterback… all the same. They didn’t really get the importance of a team sport; they wanted the attention.

“I was trained to be a backliner. That’s where I had the most potential, I guess. Besides, a striker is worth shit if he can’t make it past the defense.” Andrew seemed unimpressed. He leaned back again, bored.

“Why did you ask me if I was high?” He changed the topic suddenly. Neil changed gear just as fast.

“You told me that you still use. It was a hunch.” Andrew didn’t like to hear that, he could tell. He didn’t know why though. The goalkeeper was silent for a while, just sitting there, eyes unfocused, staring somewhere above Neil’s head and Neil was happy just watching him for now. Minutes went by and then Andrew rubbed his eyes again and leaned forward, eyes on Neil.

“I’m going to blow you today. Still yes?”

“Still,” Neil agreed. Then he thought of something. “Before we start…” He grabbed the hem of his shirt and pulled it up to reveal a strip of bare skin just above his hipbone. Angry bruises bloomed there. They were two days old, caused by a wooden table he had leaned over. All the other marks of that night had faded, not being more than red lines of a rather gently used riding crop. Andrew might think every client got his kicks out of beating him but that was far from the truth. But Neil saw no point in correcting the man. He knew Andrew hated to share and he had clients before who refused to do scenes with him so soon after another. It ruined their fantasies. Neil thought Andrew must have seen enough bruises during his Exy career not to care thought.

Seemed like he didn’t want to comment on any of this and Neil was fine with that. He just hoped Andrew wasn’t embarrassed about what had happened last time. No, he thought, he isn’t. But something wasn’t quite right today.

“Can I ask you something? You don’t have to answer.” Those hazel eyes looked back up at him, blonde eyebrows arching in a go ahead expression. “Is something wrong? Or is this you when you come down from your drugs?” The goalkeeper thought about an answer, glancing sideways, curled his tongue and licked the inside of his teeth. Neil followed the movement with his eyes fixated on those slightly parted lips. He waited, not sure if he would get an answer. Then Andrew just shrugged.

“Alright,” Neil said. It was. Even if Andrew seemed different today, it wasn’t his place to worry. His client was calm and seemed alright otherwise. He got no sense of danger from him, no aggression, no nervous ticks, nothing. He got up and came around the table to stand in front of Andrew. The Exy player looked up at him lazily and it didn’t take him long to reach out and run a hand over Neil’s flat stomach. Clever fingers found their way under the fabric and stroked his skin, seeking out marks. Andrew leaned forward, pushed the shirt upward and mouthed at the warm skin next to his bellybutton with his eyes closed. He licked and nipped while his hands found more skin. Neil looked down at him, at his pale, strangely gentle looking face and felt something very unprofessional at that moment. Andrew’s movements were slower than usual, calmer, gentler. A little like a cat, Neil thought.

“Can I,” he asked in a low voice, one hand inches away from Andrew’s hair. The hazel eyes slid open and closed again, with a sound of assent coming from his throat. Neil wound his fingers through the pale strands and ran his nails gently over Andrews scalp. It was a slow gesture, as slow as this moment, lacking the usual heat and hardness he had come to associate with Andrew. It made the goalkeeper shiver a little like he had hoped it would. It also made something ache inside of him. It was like a warning, screaming at him, telling him to stop this, to get a grip, to get away, to run because this was dangerous. This was all his mother had always warned him about. This was getting attached, involved, trapped. He fought it down. He could handle this.

Andrew opened his eyes and Neil thought he must have noticed his inner conflict and sudden unease, but the goalkeeper just took his free hand and pulled him down onto the sofa next to himself. While this wasn’t really an unusual situation for Neil, to sit down next to another man and let himself be pushed backwards, until he lay on his back, having his legs arranged to comfortably fit them both on the sofa, it was the first time Andrew did this. Neil had come to expect and respect the lines Andrew drew while interacting with him, the distance he needed, the safety and control in the whole situation. Space was important to Andrew, personal space, the setting of the scene. His living room was his chosen playground and having Neil standing somewhere seemed always less intimate.

Now, he was kneeling between Neil’s legs, bent forwards, supporting himself with one hand, using the other to touch Neil’s upper body. He took his time, hand above the shirt again, fingers finding his left nipple, rubbing it gently. Neil had his hands back in Andrew’s hair and pulled a little to get him to lean down and kiss him but the Exy player refused. Instead, he leaned down and kissed the small strip of exposed skin above Neil’s jeans. Neil reached down to take his shirt off but Andrew caught his hand in time. Clothes on today, Neil thought and wondered if it was because of the bruises. There were none Andrew hadn’t seen yet. He went back to playing with the goalkeeper’s hair. He was getting hard just from this.

Andrew reached down and rubbed his erection through the fabric of the jeans and Neil let his eyes fall shut. He spread his legs a little wider and felt Andrew’s tongue dipping into his navel. “Complaining again?”

“No. Just…” He didn’t know what to say. He leaned back again, eyes on the ceiling. He had a serious hard on by now and Andrew kept massaging it through his jeans. He wanted to reach down and adjust himself a little. The zipper had gotten in the way and it was getting uncomfortable. He hissed quietly. “Wait.”

“What?”

“The jeans. Just let me…” He reached down, only to have his hand pushed aside again. Neil frowned and looked down but Andrew seemed to have understood him and was already opening his pants and pulling the zipper down. His black boxer briefs couldn’t hide his erection at all. Andrew got those out of the way too and left them halfway down Neil’s thighs. This proved to be impractical, so the jeans and underwear ended up on the floor beside them. Andrew leaned forward and took both of Neil’s hands.

“Don’t touch me while I’m doing this,” he said and Neil could tell that it was important to him. He nodded.

“I won’t.” Andrew regarded him with a searching look.

“And try to keep still,” he added reluctantly.

“I promise.”

Andrew nodded. He pulled the condom out of his pocket. He hesitated for a second and then pushed Neil’s arms up above his head. The black haired man left them there and watched Andrew’s steady hands getting the condom onto him. The goalkeeper bent over him and kissed his six pack abs once more, looking up, raising his head a little to check on Neil’s hands again. He couldn’t see them like this, Neil realized, and trust was still a big issue between them.

“Wait.” Neil crossed his forearms behind his lower back, so Andrew wouldn’t have to check again. “Is this okay?” Andrew nodded once. Then he leaned down again and gave Neil’s erection a curious lick. Glad that he seemed satisfied with the taste, or rather lack of, this time, Neil leaned his head back again and concentrated on holding still. The thought was nearly wiped from his mind, as Andrew took hold of him and swallowed him whole.

“Fuck,” he got out, his face a mask of disbelief and pleasure. He felt Andrew sucking hard and dug his fingernails into his forearms to keep still. “Andrew,” he moaned. He bit his lower lip as Andrew’s clever mouth started to play with him. It felt so damn good; he could barely keep from moving his hips. Andrew’s other hand held him in place but snaked upwards when he was sure Neil wouldn’t move. It found his nipple again and twisted, making Neil gasp and his toes curl.

Neil’s mouth fell open and he moaned again, as he felt Andrew going lower again, felt his throat work. “Oh god,” was all he could manage. He desperately wanted to get his hands on Andrew, encourage him, reward him, anything, but he couldn’t. Andrew’s mouth was doing things to him he had only felt once before and it was driving him crazy. He was getting closer to his climax with every lick, every drag of the man’s lips, every time he swallowed.

“Andrew I’m so close,” he moaned and when the blonde hummed around him in response, he was done for. “Ah!” His muscles tensed and locked up and Neil was a little proud when he managed to keep still, even though all his hips wanted to do was buck up into that delicious heat. He shuddered and looked unseeingly at the ceiling, while Andrew sat back up and wiped his mouth on the back of his hand.

“Kiss me,” he said and looked up at the goalkeeper. He didn’t know what Andrew saw in his face at that moment that made him pause, before he leaned back down and kissed Neil hard. Neil pulled his aching arms out from behind his back but left his fingers inches away from Andrew’s hair. He didn’t know if he had his permission and his mouth was too busy to ask at the moment. Andrew took one of his hands and answered his question for him, leading it into his hair. Neil thanked him by kissing down Andrew’s jaw and neck and when he felt the man above him shiver, he moved up again and nipped at his ear.

Andrew reached for Neil’s other hand and placed it on his shoulder. It made Neil pause before he heard the goalkeeper’s low voice.

“Only above the shirt.” Neil nodded. Another piece of Andrew’s body free for him to explore. It made his throat tight with all those unspoken words he knew Andrew wouldn’t like to hear. Directing my Steps

If you want all the boring details of the difficulty leading up to the selection of my final return date, look no further. I’ve got them right here:

Nine am last Monday morning found me shivering outside another government building. I was number 142 on the sign-up sheet, but when the policeman came to me he looked at my American passport and said, “te vas a la fila de informacion” and pointed to another line up by the door, this one with five people in it.

I thanked him and moved to the other line. When I had moved up enough to get inside, my line bent around (around...) the walk-through metal detector in front of the door. Another policeman, this one more gruff than the last, pointed me to stand against the wall while I waited my turn.

When I finally made it to the front of the line twenty minutes later, I was called up to a desk where the bookish DMV-esque official asked, “estadounidense?”. When I nodded, he took out a piece of paper and explained to me that I was at the wrong office. The office I needed to be at was near Avinguda de Parallel in the city center.

I walked out buoyed up with hope: I live a block from this office.

So the next morning I picked up my official job offer and my student visa and I decided to do a preliminary check at this government office to see how long the line was.

To my surprise, this Oficina de Extranjeria (foreigner’s office) had no line at all. I walked in, got a number, took a seat, and fifteen minutes later was called up to speak to an official.

It was the first time I had spoken with someone who wasn’t in a hurry, with someone who answered my questions, with someone who didn’t shrug a single time during our conversation. When I asked her how to get an NIE she said simply, “You can’t. We don’t give those to Americans.”

I asked her how to formalize my employment under my student visa and she helpfully pulled out a six-page packet outlining the requirements of working on a student visa: organizations would have to provide me an hourly schedule of my time and after amassing all the official paperwork my employer was required to personally accompany to me to the appointment to certify the truthfulness of the application and to express the necessity of having me work for their company.

I remembered a story my boss had told me where he asked a social security official in Barcelona (during a routine shake-down of the bar), “What is this, Nazi Germany?” and the official had responded, “Yes. It is.”

I swallowed, underlined, asked questions, and wrote notes in the margin of the packet. When she had satisfied all my inquiries, I thanked the woman and left to start on the process of achieving an extension for my student visa.

Back at my apartment, I immediately found two problems with my visa extension application: I had to provide proof of my health insurance (no deductible, one million euros coverage--didn’t have this) and proof of funds (a bank statement showing five thousand or so dollars in an account under my name--didn’t have this).

Both of these things could be done, but I could work on them tomorrow. For now, I decided to start the process of changing my flight home from January 24th to later in the year.

It turns out that you have to call the airline company directly to inquire as to the cost of a booking change, but as soon as I heard the words, “Welcome to Norwegian Airlines--” the recording was cut off by my cell phone company telling me I was out of minutes.

I began to feel the weight of discouragement pressing down on me, and while I sat on my couch it occurred to me to pray and ask God what to do. Why hadn’t I thought of that yet?

I prayed, got up, and went to the kitchen to make myself some tea, and while I was making tea I suddenly thought, why am I even staying here?

And little blog, for the first time, I didn’t have a good answer to the question.

New Plan

Some of my friends were hoping to visit me here in Barcelona in the Spring--only one of them had already bought a ticket, my friend Karissa, so I ran to my phone to find the dates of her trip.

Thankfully it turned out that her trip coincides almost exactly with the last six days before I go home--now instead of working and visiting with her, I can plan to finish my job(s) a week before I leave the country and she and I can just vacation! Praise GOD!

By the end of Tuesday, what had started out as tentative certainty became absolute. It took me about a week to tell my friends all around the world that I’m going home on January 24th (I set it up on a sliding scale of easiest to hardest so that I would be more encouraged as I went along). Almost every conversation went better than I thought it would and I found that instead of feeling like I had failed, I really just feel relieved. Now I won’t have to stand in line at government offices in the mornings anymore. Now I won’t have to take showers with five minutes of hot water at a time during February. Now I can use my deposit to pay my final month’s rent.

I still haven’t told my client Ana, though. I teach English to her two little boys on Tuesday nights and she’s going to be heartbroken. Her family are the most wonderful Catalan people I’ve met.

On Wednesday I spent the morning planning weekend trips to the places I wanted to visit while I was here: France, Madrid, and Jerusalem. My flight schedule home was changed so now I’m spending 22 hours in London on my way home, too!

Since all of my private English lessons are Tues-Wed every week, I’ll be able to travel on weekends and still teach private lessons. I received my boss and supervisor’s blessing at TravelBar to spend three days a week doing all my work (and to go home: “you gotta do what’s right for you, kid”), and I’m free to spend my last seven weeks adventuring! Wow! It was easy!

A 24 year old, now named Hadiya is the latest to be the centre of attention on the topic of ‘love jihad’. Formerly Akhila, she converted to Islam after being introduced to the religion through two of her friends. The only child of parents K.M. Ashokan and Ponnamma, Akhila, at the time joined a programme in homoeopathic medicine at Salem in Tamil Nadu in 2010. In early 2016, she arrived at her college wearing a hijab. An attempt to intervene by her father after some friends had alerted him roved in vain as she vanished. She later appeared in court with A.S. Zainaba, president of the National Women’s Front who the court allowed her to stay with. The main crux of the issue is if a 24 year old is mature enough to make her own life decisions including choosing to marry. The apex court will now hear Hadiya’s side of the story on November 27. In an op-ed for The Indian Express, Tahir Mahmood, the former chair of the National Minorities Commission and member, Law Commission of India, writes on the fundamental right to freedom to marry irrespective of faith – “Neither the Constitution nor any central or state law places any restraint on interfaith marriages. The Special Marriage Act, 1954, enables persons professing different faiths to become life-partners retaining their respective religious beliefs and practices, and yet one of them is often persuaded — or otherwise left with no choice — to embrace the other party’s religion”. “Conversion for the sake of marriage only is repugnant to Islamic teachings. I would even recommend outlawing this practice. However, I fully agree with the apex court’s afore-mentioned Lata Singh verdict that interfaith marriages (without conversion) should be encouraged”. Around this time was when she changed her name to Hadiya. In December of last year, upon arriving at a court hearing, she was married to Shefin Jehan; much to the courts ire. Journalist with India Today TV in a column explains how this case is deeply rooted in misogyny – “What’s interesting is that this case isn’t even a classic example of the so-called “love jihad”. The woman converted much earlier and got married years later. The court came to the conclusion that the woman is not fit to make a decision for herself and has been brainwashed”. The case had reached the Supreme Court where an NIA investigation was ordered; the report stated that various organizations are recruiting and radicalizing people for the purposes of joining and fighting for ISIS. “The most problematic aspect of this case has been that the woman who is legally an adult was sent to the “custody of her parents”. The NIA conceded in the Supreme Court yesterday, that “custody” for a major girl is a problematic word in law”. “Even if all the allegations of the NIA are to be believed and taken at face value that the girl was in fact radicalized and there is a concerted effort and a “well-oiled machinery that targets women”, is locking up Hadiya the solution of it”? “In the 21st century, though women are given full and equal rights, their bodies and sexuality remain the battleground for a political and cultural war. The case of Hadiya is a classic 21st century example when the law gives in to a political narrative, sidelines individual rights and women take the status of chattels and property”. The NIA report isn’t all wrong. An India Today investigation looked into Kerala’s Popular Front of India (PFI), which the right leaning magazine website Swarajya calls “an Islamic fundamentalist organization”. The PFI has maintained that it championed diversity and equality and has denied accusation of religious conversions, hawala funding, murderous assaults and any terror links. The PFI is a non-profit organization. The organization is under NIA investigation not just related to the Hadiya case. A.S. Zainaba, the head of the groups’ women wing and also with whom Hadiya is living, denied the allegations that the group engages in brainwashing and converting women to Islam, saying the allegations are baseless. She insists the marriage between Hadiya and Shefin Jehan was arranged and not a case of love jihad. However, according to the investigative report, Zainaba had shared some of the inner working of the group with undercover reporters saying, “In that institute of ours…around 5,000 people have converted to Islam over the past 10 years now. We don’t have to officially declare it to be a conversion centre. It’s an educational institute”. Swarajya in a report calls the issue of love jihad a national security threat citing the initial NIA probe which the CPI (M) rejected – “While no one questions the competence of the Kerala police who have had to deal with a large number of cases related to Islamic radicalization in the state, it is unwise for the government of Kerala to question the court’s directive, especially when it involves India’s counter-terrorism intelligence”. “It is clear that this issue is not the sole concern of Hindus but a collective problem faced by numerous communities in the state. Unfortunately, the government in the current political discourse seems to be ignoring this crucial development, which also runs the risk of being ignored by the police for the sake of political correctness”. Specific to the case of Hadiya, activist Rahul Eashwar met with Hadiya to hear her side of the story, which she is mandated to do after the Supreme Court has summoned her to speak on November 27, where the court stated that her consent as an adult is important and to hear her version of how and why she married a Muslim man in Kerala last year. Rahul, released videos of his meeting where Hadiya says she fears or her life and is afraid of her father saying, “Get me out of here. Today or tomorrow, I am going to die. I am sure about this. My father is getting angry, I can make out. He pushes me”. This signals that she could be kept there against her will. The India arm of Amnesty International stated that while they welcome the apex court order, her confinement is unlawful. The lawyer who represented Hadiya’s husband in the Supreme Court argued that Hadiya has the right to love and marry whoever she wants. She writes about this in an op-ed for the Hindustan Times – “Kerala offers very famous cases of Hindus who have converted to Islam, including the late poet and writer Kamala Das. What was so strange about Hadiya’s conversion, when she herself appeared in court and stated that her conversion was voluntary?” “We have a constitution which guarantees freedom of religion which includes the right to convert to any religion. Why then must she be denied agency to convert? All eyes are on the usual suspects – Rahul Gandhi of the Congress and the Prime Minister. Both have been doing the rounds; most recently Rahul in a speech in the state on Monday said the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will undergo changes to provide relief to traders and consumers if the Congress comes back to power in 2019. On the other side of the aisle, Home Minister Rajnath Singh blamed the Virbhadra Singh-led Congress government in the state for women in the light of the recent rape and murder of a schoolgirl in the state. He brought in reinforcements in the form of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and Union Ministers Jagat Prakash Nadda and Smriti Irani who addressed rallies of their own. On the BJP side, party president Amit Shah announced Prem Kumar Dhumal as the party’s chief ministerial candidate in Himachal Pradesh. The decision came late and till Saturday was not clear if it would declare a chief ministerial candidate for the November 9 elections. Journalist Sanjeev Singh in a column for Times of India writes on the choice of Chief Ministerial candidate by the BJP in Himachal Pradesh shows the party is being pragmatic in its functioning and choices – “Political experts believe the battle for top honors in Himachal BJP was between two-time chief minister Dhumal and Union health minister JP Nadda. While Dhumal is popular among BJP cadre, Nadda made a name for himself within the party due to his organizational skills”. “Though Nadda may boast of his proximity to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah, he lacks the pan-state appeal of Dhumal nurtured since 1982 when he became vice-president of BJP’s youth wing”. “This was in line with the feedback received by Shah from party cadre as well that a local face was needed to counter the adverse effects of economic slowdown. This is also a reflection that the party cannot rely solely on Modi’s charisma to cross the finish line in the state”. The decision to announce a Chief Ministerial candidate days before the state goes to the polls is a departure for the BJP. In the past, the party did not announce or mention anyone in the run up to assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Haryana to name a few. The Indian Express editorial stated that in the past, the BJP fought and won assembly elections without projecting chief ministerial candidates; since the ascent of Modi to the national stage – “The BJP’s decision to project Dhumal, midway in the campaign, may have been influenced by its main rival in the state, the Congress, backing the present CM, Virbhadra Singh, for another term and mocking the BJP campaign as “bin dulhe ki baraat” (a marriage party without groom)”. “The PM loomed large in all these state campaigns and his wide appeal made the need for a charismatic local leader to head the state government even post-poll seems irrelevant. The Himachal example, however, points to the irresistible federal push in the Indian polity even at a time when the BJP has been emphasizing the winnability of a centralized model and strategy”. The strategy seems to be to capitalize on the success of Modi as a national leader since 2014 seemed to turn the tide in the BJP towards a more centralized and focused party structure. “The leader-centric politics championed by Modi could arguably press home, rather than decrease, the demand for a regional face to complement, and even amplify, the central message. Shah’s words in Himachal about a dual leadership — Modi at the Centre and Dhumal in the region — may mirror the BJP acknowledgement of a new political imperative”. Dhumal is a senior party leader and a two-time chief minister of the hill state. The state has traditionally always voted in favor of anti-incumbency and has seen power alternate between Congress and BJP governments for the last five terms. If this trend holds, Virbhadra Singh would be replaced by Dhumal for this third term. The Times of India editorial states that announcing the CM candidate for Himachal ahead of the polls shows that the BJP is not necessarily just relying on a national figure like Modi, but it also empowers regional leaders – “BJP had relied on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s charisma during the March assembly elections and won the crucial states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand without a CM candidate. Dhumal’s anointment perhaps also reflects BJP’s decision not to over-burden Modi”. “BJP has experimented with a chief ministerial face in only three states of Delhi, Goa and Assam ever since they swept to power at the Centre in 2014. Projection of Sarbananda Sonowal in Assam and Manohar Parrikar in Goa delivered handsome returns for BJP.” “This should encourage BJP to delegate more authority and empower regional leaders, as Modi’s charisma may not work everywhere. Perhaps it is time for BJP to go ahead and strongly project a chief ministerial face in Gujarat as well.” The ruling Congress in the state is relying heavily on 83-year-old Virbhadra Singh, a six-time Chief Minister and five-time Lok Sabha member. Singh has announced that this will be his last election. Like Dhumal, he is a veteran of party politics for more than five decades. The criticism laid against him is that he stifles and actively discourages the rise of a second generation of leaders in the state. As the two elder statesmen battle it out at the top, their sons wait in the wings. Virbhadra Singh’s son, Vikramaditya Singh, is the head of the Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress. He makes his debut in the Shimla Rural seat which is a reliably Congress; hoping name recognition will play a role in helping him get elected. A contrast to Singh’s son is Anurag Thakur, son of Dhumal who is a rising star in the BJP. Often referred to as “tikka” meaning an inheritor, Thakur doesn’t use or invoke his father’s second name.
