i am really so sorry to continue harping on about the watcher entertainment streaming service. but this kind of stuff (internet content as a business & marketing it as such) is truly my obsession, and i think i will implode if i don't talk about some of the takes i'm seeing.
i'd like to emphasize again i don't have strong feelings about watcher either way. i like ghost files, i watch mystery files sometimes, i watched worth it back in the buzzfeed days. i don't watch any of their shows religiously.
anyway, here's the main things i keep seeing crop up and my thoughts on each:
"watcher has 25 employees they have to pay, and employing people in this economy is good, so we should be banding together to pay them."
employing people is good if you currently have the capacity to pay them. i checked watcher's linkedin page, and many of their employees were hired within the last year or two. if they hired people they cannot pay with the business model they had before, something is seriously wrong with their internal bookkeeping/decision making. it means they either didn't know they couldn't pay these people long term, or they did know and were content with risking newly hired employees' livelihoods on a huge content pivot in the next year.
of note is that none of their employees' titles have anything to do with managing the finances of the company. they are the size of a small business but have no one aside from the figureheads of the company in charge of their finances.
this is the kind of company decision making that leads to downsizing and layoffs, which can be devastating. but you know what's worse than laying off a portion of your staff? laying off everyone because your business is going under.
"not everyone can afford the subscription, but those who can should pay it to support the watcher team."
no. $6/month for a couple hours of content (depending on what shows you actively watch and the natural fluctuation of their release schedule) is a fundamentally bad value. i can pay that much for a few movies on amazon. i can pay that much for dropout, if i want to support a smaller business instead.
and to be totally frank, even if people do sign up, i don't think they'd get enough to compete with the amount they get through patreon/sponsorships. and the fact that they didn't know how many of their subscribers would realistically sign up is a bad sign.
a pretty good conversion rate of free to paid subscribers of a service or content is 3% (usually accomplished through a free trial). given the very poor reception of the announcement, let's say about 1% of their 3 mil youtube subs pay for their service. that's 30k people paying for their new platform. that's $180k a month in their pocket.
(they currently only have 12k subs on patreon so we are being generous here.)
a sponsorship deal (based on my googling, i have less direct experience with this) is anywhere from $10-50 per 1000 views. they've gotten about 1 mil views on their last few videos. 3 mil subs is nothing to shake a stick at, but let's say they're on the lower end of the payscale at $25 per 1000 views. that's $25k a video, $100k a month if they release 1 video a week. their lowest patreon tier is 5 bucks, so even if all their subs are at that tier, that's another $60k, so $160k total. it's entirely likely they're bringing in much more than that when you factor in merch, adsence, etc.
did anyone on their team crunch numbers on how many people would need to sub to make the switch worth it? did anyone do market research on how many people they could convert to paid users? because if not, if they really didn't have a game plan for this, the subscription service was always doomed to fail.
"this was their only option to continue making the content they want to make, with the production value they want."
i watched their announcement video. a key point in that video is that they have done sponsored videos and that's what used to pay for their content, but they did not like the amount of creative control the sponsor had over the content.
look, i get that's no fun. we'd all love creatives to be able to make whatever they want. but when you are a small business with a team of employees relying on you, you have to think about making money, sometimes at the cost of creative liberties.
and they had so many other options to make money for the projects they want to make without jumping to a subscription platform.
they could have started actually promoting their patreon, and maybe done some restructuring of the tiers. why not a highly produced, special series just for patreon members? or a special high-budget episode of each series, while the main series is lower budget?
bite the bullet and continue taking sponsorship deals on some less-produced shows, while axing sponsorships from the ones the crew feels more passionate about.
schedule larger, blowout-production shows only when they can be afforded. this is what Notorious Amongus Guy streamer jerma does. he saves up for big productions like his baseball or dollhouse streams, so he can really get creative with them.
they had other options and they've tried very little, especially when you compare them to other content house business at similar scales. try guys and good mythical morning both put out significant content with significant staff, and have had to diversify their income streams with auxiliary products, shows with widely varied levels of production, etc. but it seems to be working for them. watcher has merch and that's about it, and seems to only want to increase the production quality of ALL their shows.
really, all this just boils down to a terrible business decision. it's hard to say if the watcher team is working with a consultant or anyone outside of their team, but they certainly don't have anyone internally who is experienced with running a business like this. to me, it seems very much like they got in a room together and did some extremely optimistic income ballparking with no research behind it.
and that might have been fine for three dudes running a channel alone, but if they're a business, they have to start making decisions like one.

Rules: do’s & don’ts
There is almost no rule for what is or isn't allowed on this blog, we are accepting of basically all and any content. When something is not allowed there is a good reason for it, so please try not to break the rules.
What you can not post
Anything too explicit. Detailed NSFW starters, graphic GIFs or pictures used as decoration and the like. If you really want to share a detailed vision of the scene that will be acted out in the roleplay, send a link to google docs, carrd, another post, etc that people can check out. This is primarily about smut but it applies to gore as well. To be super clear, smut and gore are not banned from the blog, you can request any kink/situation you like, but you will need to discuss the details with your partners. For example, asking for a BDSM roleplay is fine, writing out details of the smut scene in your request is not. This is to avoid possible reports based on the NSFW ban.
Wait 24 hours before submitting again from the moment the ask is posted. You can post ads requesting different RPs, just not the same ask. This is to avoid cluttering.
It goes without saying, this is RP only. You can't send requests for dating or similar.
You can only send ads through asks or submissions. If you need help with those I'll be happy to lend a hand, but don't send your requests via DMs. If the inbox is closed it means it's full/I'm not active, please be patient and, again, don't try to get your ad in through DMs. I won't be able to post your ad from DMs.
That's it, pretty easy, right?
What you can post
Generally, anything not mentioned above is allowed. However, since some things get asked often, I will make a general list of things that are allowed for your convenience.
RPF is allowed.
Discord servers and other groups are allowed.
Things related to RPing, even if not strictly roleplay-seeking, are allowed. Other roleplay finders, RP resources, and even questions about roleplaying are all allowed.
Minors are allowed.
Dead dove content is allowed.
What you should/shouldn't do
Your ask will be published even if you don't abide by these rules. However, keeping this in mind will make for a better experience for everyone involved.
Be as clear as possible about the fandom and other relevant information. I can't tag it if you don't tell me where these blorbos come from. If the fandom has alternate names/acronyms include everything!
If you're going to include more than 20 fandoms in your search, split the post into two separate requests. There's a maximum of 30 tags allowed on a post, out of which only the first 20 will show up in searches. If you include more, the rest will go untagged/will not show up in searches.
Don't censor triggers. It just interferes with people that have these words blocked. Don't write inc*st, write incest.
Miscellaneous other stuff
I am not the police, your parents, or HR. If you have a disagreement with your RP buddy I can't intervene to solve it for you, nor can I put them in time out. Unpleasant things happen online, learn to block and move on. Please don't message me - or worse, send anon asks - with callouts for certain users and ask them to block/warn others.
If you feel stuck and the blank page is daunting, you can use this form as a base. Feel free to fill out everything, just some of it, add items I didn't include, or just send your own personal ad.

Hi Sarah ☺️👋,
I apologize from the beginning in case you did not understand my meaning, the question was written through Google Translator.
Should we really not care about what goes on behind the scenes in the entertainment industry? I remember that you wrote that We have to take it at face value and not dig into what is happening behind the scenes in order to live a healthy life without carrying this worry, but after watching the oshi no ko anime, this made me think again about the state of the entertainment industry, do we really have to be indifferent to what is happening to our favorite artists not only our kalafina girls but in general. Shouldn't we, at least discuss this matter so that their conditions do not get worse? I feel we should not separate the product from the condition of the person who made it!
Tumblr media
Hi there! Don't worry, your message is perfectly clear and fine. I apologise for taking so long to reply, this has been sitting in my drafts forever. This is a tricky topic so it took a while to figure out the best way to map out my reply.
I am assuming that this ask is a direct response to what I wrote HERE? For those who are curious, this is what I had to say to someone who seemed incredibly upset about the current state of Wakana's "relationship" with everyone else from the YK family.
[I]t is not at all healthy to be this invested in public figures and the things they choose to share with us. I fully understand the desire to get more insight but please don’t make your happiness and peace of mind contingent on something that is so completely out of our control.
Let's start with a quick clarification, I am by no means implying that we should take everything at face value. Quite the contrary actually, I am a strong proponent of critical thinking, it's crucial to look at things from a nuanced perspective, to read between the lines and educate ourselves on all the finer details before making any sort of assumption based on surface-level observations. Many fans operate on misconceptions and tend to jump to conclusions because they heavily rely on unverified news and brief snapshots without taking all the available facts into account. This is why I often feel the need to make elaborate explanation posts. I just want to keep people grounded and stop them from coming up with unfounded theories.
I am also not trying to tell people to be completely indifferent towards what is happening behind the scenes of the entertainment industry. The Japanese entertainment industry is indeed very harsh and genuinely messed up. It's impossible to not feel affected when you hear news of celebrity su!c!des and see some of those horrible conditions our favourites are subjected to. Being conscious of these issues while engaging in fan activities is a good thing and completely normal but it's very unhealthy to let your whole life become consumed with worry over someone whose mental/physical state and situation we are incapable of fully understanding.
Because you see, even with access to a vast amount of knowledge, we as fans have to realise that we'll never get the "full picture". The extent of our involvement is incredibly limited. There are boundaries we have to respect, there are lines we aren't allowed to cross, there are things which are purposefully kept from us. The truth of the matter is that regardless of how deep we try to dig into what is going on behind the scenes, regardless of how much we discuss the situation or how many possible theories we come up with while endlessly worrying, it won't ever lead us to satisfactory results, it won't bring us any closer to knowing more about the "real" condition of the people we idolise. So why should we sacrifice our mental well-being over something that's so far removed from us? It's utterly pointless. Hence my above advice to not get too caught up in this mess.
I am not sure if you are familiar with the term but when fans get overly invested in the lives of idols, celebrities and public figures, it's a slippery slope towards developing a so-called parasocial relationship with them. This sort of relationship is based on delusions, meaning fans fool themselves into believing they have a deep connection to that person (or rather, the "idea" of said person) which may lead to a false sense of intimacy and ownership. But make no mistake, despite what fans may think, we have very little insight into the lives of these public figures and while they have a considerable amount of influence over us, we have comparatively little influence over them. In reality, most things are completely out of our control. We often have no choice but to watch things unfold from the sidelines.
My point is, take everything with a grain of salt, thoroughly acquaint yourself with the topic, stay respectful, be aware of your limits and come to terms with the fact that you are not really in a position to save or help them when it comes to personal matters. Don't compromise your own well-being by getting entangled in a mess that's beyond our control. It sounds harsh but as fans we are quite powerless in that regard. All we can really do is support and appreciate the content (or "product" as you say) our favourites create and have faith that their "real condition" at least somehow resembles the positive image they choose to present to us.
And yeah, I am self-aware enough to know that this all sounds hypocritical coming from someone like me who has always been quite vocal about being crazily obsessed with Kalafina. I'd call myself an extremely dedicated fan who is very much invested in the lives of the Kalafina members. Still, I believe I know where to draw the line and that has more or less kept me sane throughout the years.

Let me spell it out this way. Google Chrome was released in September of 2008, and when it first dropped, it was a legitimately good browser. It was faster and sleeker than Firefox and Internet Explorer and generally more user-friendly, and it legitimately was a lighter load on your computer with more useful tools built in. Switching to Google Chrome in 2009 was a no-brainer.
What happened? Well it’s a little thing called profit motive. At the time, Google did not sell laptop computers. The first Chromebooks shipped in 2011 (and let’s be honest, they kind of sucked*). So it wasn’t for several years before Google also profited from selling computers on a large scale. And in those few years between the two releases, Chrome was good because it benefited Google for Chrome to be good. Their only short-term motive was to get people to use their browser, and obviously no one was going to download a new browser and delete their old one if they already had one that was as good or better. So Google had a real, serious motive to make Google Chrome better than the competition.
That all changed when Google started selling computers. Suddenly, they had a new motive: get people to buy their computers (and preferably more than one). These computers came with Chrome pre-installed, and in many cases they physically can’t run another browser, but they are lightweight and comparatively cheap, and Chrome already has a reputation for being better than Firefox because of those crucial three years**. At this point, the main work of getting the browser installed on the computer is already done, so suddenly Google had basically no reason to actually compete with Mozilla and other competitors, so they no longer had any motivation to make a good product.
In fact, it gets worse. Suddenly, Google found they had a real motivation to actively make a bad product. If you have Chrome on your computer, try opening it up for half an hour or so with, say, six tabs open and maybe one other program running, then pop open Task Manager and see what’s gumming up your disk usage. There will be probably around 15-18 iterations of Chrome running, and yes, it will be taking up the majority of your disk usage, and yes, they do this on purpose. See, most people aren’t super computer savvy, and if they have the money, when their computer starts running slowly, they just buy a new one without doing too much debugging. And if Google could manufacture this event earlier than it happens naturally, they could get people to buy more computers faster, which means more profit for them. Chrome isn’t the only Google product that does this, but it’s the one that most people are likely to have a run-in with.
This is just what happens when one company makes too many intersecting products. It’s the natural result of a lack of competition. And it is very much the reason why streaming services should be distributors only, and not make their own original content. We’ve all seen that thing where Netflix hypes up a show, commissions a bunch of advertising for it, makes two seasons, and then cancels it to make room for some new show they’re hyping up. Netflix doesn’t get their money from individual DVD sales or network views (which would require them to long-term develop a consistently good product), they get their money from subscriptions, so any excuse to get subscriptions is a good excuse. And this results in a lot of unfinished, low quality drivel that only exists to look flashy and get a bunch of people to sign up. There’s no motivation to make a quality product.
Like I said, I don’t watch Amazon’s original programming and I never have. But based on conversations I’ve had with people who do, it’s much the same. Their few wins tend to have the original creators extremely involved, and maybe if they always did that I would feel differently. But that hardly allows for truly original content, or adaptations of content where the original owners are for whatever reason unavailable.
* Let’s continue to be honest: Chromebooks still kind of suck. ** Firefox has legitimately stepped up their game since 2008 and is now a real alternative to Chrome in terms of UI and usability. I highly recommend switching to it.

How To Improve Website Speed?
Hi Folks,
I own and operate a small professional services business. I launched the first version of our website almost two years ago and am now actively planning a major update to version two.
I’m relatively happy with what I achieved with the first iteration considering the limited budget I applied to it. I actively used SEMRush and Ahrefs to measure our performance and generate useful insights.
Today, we consistently rank amongst the top five amongst our local competitors for our keywords. We have 4,500 backlinks and 110 referring domains of which 40 are decent quality and dofollow. Our organic search traffic is still relatively humble, at 30-45 per month, but due to the nature of our business and the size of the deals we pursue, that was enough to justify our investment and fuel revenue growth. We are tracking for around 40 keywords. Our authority score on SEMRush is still quite low at 7.
I understand these results may seem low compared to firms with different business models or operating in other industries, but we work in an ultra-niche sector and typically only look to close a few deals per year. If I measure the success of our website based on the number of leads it has produced leading to closed deals and the value each deal represented to us, I can say I am quite satisfied.
In planning version two of our website, there is a tonne of new content I am planning to add which I am sure will help boost results. However, there is one component within Google Ranking Factors that I am still weak on understanding, at that is website speed (both for desktop and mobile).
When I test our website speed using commonly available tools such as PageSpeed Insights, Pingdom, GTmetrix, Catchpoint, ITRSuptrends and MonsterInsights, the results all tend to vary a great deal, but a consistent metric is that our overall performance is low, particularly with regards to Total Blocking Time (TBT) as this is currently between 480ms and 730ms on desktop, and even worse on Mobile.
Here the question for the community:
Do you have any general guidance on what my SEO consultant should focus on that will give the greatest bang for the buck when it comes to improving the speed (particularly TBT) of my website?
Our website is built on WordPress and hosted by Bluehost:
Avalon Partners
Thanks very much for sharing your experience and insights!
