[IRON FLAME SPOILERS AHEAD]
Soo, I just finished iron flame and oh boy-
XADEN TURNING INTO A FUCKING VENIN.
Unbelievable. Oh and andarna being the 7th dragon breed is just slaying.(I love her relationship with Tairn)
And I think the nightmares Violet had of the sage might be Xaden’s, and she somehow through the bond had the same nightmare???
Lilith’s death really made me cry for some reason, it was just so..sad? Idk but I really wanted to see her mending her relationship with the sorrengail siblings.
And Xaden mentioning that he doesn’t know where his mom is was surprising, cause I thought the whole time, that she was executed too, along with Fen Riorson.
Why do I feel like ‘naolin’ (if that’s how u spell his name) might’ve been the sage, cause like the sage addressed himself as a general or smth? Was naolin a general? If he was, it would make sense tho-
Rebecca did a really good job at astounding me at the end of the book.like why would HE TURN INTO A VENIN?????
I’m rating the book a fucking 4/5
I loved it.

***UNHINGED FOURTH WING THEORY***
*** HEAVY SPOILERS ***
SO … There’s this theory going around about a connection between Amari, queen of the gods, and a relation or magical tie to Xaden. i can’t remember all of it but as someone who has magic with shadows and reading minds, as well as several imagery ties with him around the temple of Amari and being a messenger of Amari.
NOW… Rebecca Yarros said that we’ve already seen Violet use her second signet even though we don’t know what it is yet. BUT, what if when she used her second signet it was in Iron Flame when she could see and speak to Liam. He said that Malek sent him and that he was real, but what if it was Violet who was able to summon him in some way because subconsciously that’s who she needed and so her signet reached out for him. ANOTHER THING, is that Violet is constantly studying and obsessing over the erased history of the several hundred years that were lost when the government was busy trying to cover up the truth about the Venin. She often has to go back to the histories and secrets of the original six and their dragons, but there is also a lot of talk about her father and even pieces of the book— quotes we get at the beginning of chapters— that hint to us that people have tried to study the venin previously and we never knew about it and still don’t know about those past discoveries.
SO… what if Violet’s second signet has something to do with communing with the dead, or some kind of connection to Malek himself.!? I’ve also randomly make the theory that Xaden’s mother is some kind of powerful descendant of Amari if not Amari herself— yes it’s a little far fetched but still— and how awesome would it be if our power couple became even more freaking powerful from there heritage.!!!
I know there is the little hole of Violet being unable to use her signet or talk to her dragons because they has been suppressing them with the potion at the time of her torture when Liam was around, so if anyone has any theories as to how to get around that, or any other theories I’d love to hear. I was thinking something about how Andarna is the 7th breed of dragon that remains unknown to humans and has yet to be studied so I thought if it was her power that came from Andarna, and the power suppressant potion was created with the help of studying the other dragon breeds, maybe there’s something about Andarna that doesn’t allow the same suppression. I’ve also considered the fact that Malek is a god and can do whatever he wants, so if her power comes from him there’s that…

- Things that bug me about the plot of Iron Flame -
*Spoilers Obviously *
****
Beware I wrote this late at night right after finishing the book
*****
Things that bug me -
Mostly because they're a) plot holes and bad writing or
B) Xaden still lies everytime he opens his mouth :
1) what's with the second signet? I know we had the theory that it's all the rebellion kids because of the relic. Imogen can erase recent memories and is also very fast (and that IS a signet hence why it was forbidden to use on the mat), Liam had farsight but also somehow wielded ice in the final battle of FW... His dragon's name literally meant ice - and most of the dragon's names are related to their riders signet somehow -
So can anybody explain why the two signet thing is suddenly something only Xaden has? And only because sgaeyl bonded in his direct family line?
That doesn't add up. Unless he's still lying and he has actually three...
2.) Speaking of Xaden's second signet - I think he's still lying about the extend of what he can do. If he could only read intentions then he should not be able to respond to things that violet was thinking in that detail. There is also a line "but I have to know what she's thinking" THINKING - not just her intention or half-before-whatever thought. Yes that would explain why he is such a good fighter but he has to be much more powerful than that.
He also projects his thoughts to Violet at one point (You know when) . Probably unintentionally - but now I have only two explanations :
Either violets second signet is also mind reading (YR confirmed it is already manifested in IF and we will spot it if we know what to look for)
OR Xaden can invade other people's minds. Which then got me thinking that maybe there is no bond between the two at all. It's just Xaden reading Violet's mind and projecting his answers into hers. Now that would be a plottwist.
3.) The Rebellion relics. We learn in this book (from Xaden of all people) that the relics are the result of a rune stone that all the children were holding in their hand while their parents were being executed. It was supposed to counter the signet of the dragon that did the execution - which it does - but how can it be that in FW we learn that the youngest of them was born with one?
So is Xaden lying (can you tell I don't trust that guy?) or is it just sloppy writing?
4.) Last but not least - lazy writing or maybe I was too tired during this part and missed something -
But why can Violet only power one ward stone? I get there had to be a plotpoint to reveal Andarna as the 7th breed but when does it say that every dragon's flame can only be used once? Because she couldn't use Tairn again and had to ask Codagh... And now with Andarna being the only one of the 7th there is only one wardstone that can be powered...
You know what - even if it was explained and I missed it that's still lazy writing imo
Anyway I did not hate it. I actually liked it a lot. Andarna and Tairn bickering actually made my day.
I just hope these things will be explained at some point 😂

My thoughts on Iron Flame!
***MAJOR SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS YET***
What I liked:
*I really respected Violet for sticking to her convictions with Xaden, she knew what she needed for her to have a successful relationship with him and she wasn’t willing to compromise on that.
*I KNEW DAIN WASN’T GOING TO BE AN ANTAGONIST FOREVER. I’m very glad of this because I’m so tired of the guy best-friend turned antagonist trope. I’m glad to see aspects of Violet and Dain’s friendship returning/ reforging into something that can grow healthier with time.
*All the secondary characters have my heart and soul. Rhiannon especially, justice for my girl because she was so patient and such a good friend when she had every right to be upset with Violet for shutting her out.
*I really liked Sloane! I wish we had more time with her and I’m hopeful to see more of her in the next books.
*Tairn just makes this series for me. I adore that dragon. The sass was as strong as ever. My favorite exasperated dragon dad. This only reaffirms my statement that he’s just dragon Kratos
*ANDARNA!! What a sweet baby, she just wants to be like Tairn. He may not have sired her but that’s her dad right there. I saw it coming but I thought it was so cool that she’s the 7th dragon breed. I can’t wait to see the signet that manifests.
*I loved learning more about the lands outside of Navarre, the culture behind Tyrrendor was especially fascinating.
*The main characters are young adults and they FEEL like young adults!! (I know this will contradict with a critique kinda but hear me out). They have to grow up quicker than most and make decisions no one should ever have to make but there are the moments that remind you just how young they are that just smack you in the face and I love it.
*The spice in this was much stronger than the first which I was a big fan of. Overall much more descriptive which made for a more pleasant read IMO.
What I didn’t like:
*The pacing in this book felt really rushed when compared to the first. I understand the need to convey some urgency but it made the story feel hastily put together.
*Tying into the above point, for how rushed the story was there was a lot of information crammed in. It felt like I was reading two books put into one. I wish there had been a bit more time spent on certain parts, especially with establishing the connections between characters.
*I love Violet but damn that girl cannot make up her mind! I love angst as much as the next reader but I do wish some of her lamenting over communication issues with all the other characters could’ve been cut down. It began to feel really frustrating after a while and like the time could’ve been spent re-establishing the bonds of the characters.
*I’ll be honest, I hate the miscommunication trope. In all its forms (this counts since they’re keeping secrets from one another). It can be a really handy literary tool but sometimes (including this time) it feels overused and like an easy way to create tension. There’s a way to handle the trope effectively, the first half of the book proved that but after that it just felt like a placeholder for not exposing important info right away. They’re in the middle of a revolution! There will be things that won’t be communicated right away, that’s more than enough of a reason!
Final Thoughts:
Overall I really enjoyed this book! The characters still feel true to their established characterization from the first book but you can see their growth and where they could wind up in the future. This book felt a lot less self contained than the first which was a smart move that helped it stay away from the dreaded “second book syndrome”. There was solid movement and change that felt like it mattered. I definitely have my qualms with the writing but it didn’t break my immersion and I still felt very invested in the story Rebecca Yarros was telling. It felt both like an ending and a beginning in the best way possible and I’m really looking forward to where the story will take us next!
