SLUGCAT REDESIGNS YIPPEE
hello rain world community please click for higher quality (downpour spoilers btw)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also lots of design rambling underneath the cut. warning its very long and all over the place
-OKAYOKAY so you may notice that Survivor, Monk, and Gourmand all have similar markings- darker back patch, light tummy, tipped ears/stalks- this is because Gourmand is their grandpa in my interpretation!! they share traits because famly..
-neither Survivor nor Monk are fully grown, though Survivor is almost an adult. theyre the slugcat equivalent of teenagers. thats why theyre a little shorter than everyone else. however Enot and Rivulet are fully grown, Rivulet is just built for a different environment and Enots a fucked up inversion of Survivor
-Hunter, of course, gots the rots. i dont know why nobody utilizes Hunters scarred eye in HLL designs tbh- because the scar and the closed eye together make an X shape. and you know what else has an X shape? rot cyst. food for your thoughts :)
-the feds don't want you to know this but you can make any slugcat of your choice as fat and round as you want and nobody can stop you because they are your slugcat designs. anyways chubby arti :) and chubby nightcat :) and plump monk :)
-Nightcat has little silver splotches because I SAID SO. the silver bits by their eyes were actually inspired by Moonwatcher from Wings of Fire with those silver teardrop scales by her eyes, i always thought that was cool. my WoF phase haunts me to this day,,, also Nightcats ears point sideways because its cute
-okay you're probably wondering what the FUCK is up with Enot. the answer: who knows??? i made them La Creatura. theyre a little freak of nature who shouldnt exist but they glitched into existence or something and they have four ears and four hands and six eyes as a result
-Gourm... im love Gourm... theyre the second tallest slugcat, Spearmaster takes first place as resident stickbug
-okay so! if you may notice, pre-canon event Arti and current Arti have some differences. previous Arti has some little scars, and a darker end to their tail. current Arti has burns that cover those. thats intentional! i like to think that when the incident happened, the anger and grief took them over, erasing all personhood in the eyes of both the scavs and theirself in favor of carnage and fury and destruction. the burns represent that. the signs of a life well lived, that little dot of personhood? gone, replaced only by rage and hurting and memories of a tragic incident. (dont worry Arti fans in my little au they arent sad and enraged forever, they do heal. eventually.)
-more design notes about Arti but their right leg is burnt and hurts to put too much pressure on, so they prefer exploding if they have a long distance to cover or somewhere to reach. also, i gave Arti a tailtip that resembles a wick that was a result of the burn scars, thank you @pansear-doodles for bein cool about people takin inspiration from your amazing designs!!
-Spearmaster is comically tall and i love that. they also have Suns's logo on the back of their head. its like a watermark! Hunter doesn't have a watermark because in my interpretation, the rot stuff was intentional, added by NSH as a ticking time bomb as a sort of motivation for Hunter, so like why bother claiming a slugcat thats gonna either ascend or experience a fate worse than death
-also the pearl experience left a permanent scar for Spears because why not
-Rivulet.. the funny fishie.... i made almost zero changes to my orevious design of them because it is perfect. just added like some extra gills. theye very short and have little ears because little ears probably help with swimming and stuff to be like aerodynamic. they also have those little flaps on their side like nudibranches!! lil reference to sea slugs :)
-Saint takes inspiration from lynxes (ears) and sea bunnies (the spots!!). Saint is also the oldest slugcat here. i made their forehead dots eyes because that is COOL !!!! i love extra eyes. also chest floof :)
-Survivor and Monks parents had to take care of THREE pups ON THEIR OWN WITHOUT A COLONY TO SUPPORT THEM and they have zero special abilities to their name unlike Arti or Gourmand. theyre gonna be a little scuffed up
-Arti's pups are a mix between a carnivorous slugcat (Arti) and a regular slugcat (whoever Arti had kids with). the blue pup has a diet like Gourmands, where it can eat meat but it wont get as much out of it as a carnivorous slugcat. the green pup has the typical Slugcat diet.
i'll update this if i think of anything else to add!!!

my range of "game with creatures" interests is funny bc on one end of the spectrum theres slime rancher which is all around woo ^_^ yippee silly fun and pokemon which is likeWOOOOOOOO LOOK AT ALL THESE FUNNY CREATURES YOU CAN BEFRIEND LOOK AT ALL THESE PLACES TO EXPLORE!!!!! OK MESSED UP STUFF HAPPENS BUT THATS OK YOU HAVE CREATURES TO FIX IT :) and then on the OTHER end we have rain world which is like shut the hell up bitch. everything wants you dead this world does not care for you you are a MEANINGLESS mote of dust caught in the cycle of death and rebirth. Your existence is simultaneously something you need to eradicate all evidence of off of the fucjing earth ASAP and something that will never leave proof of itself anyways. there have been an innumerable amount of civilizations swallowed by this cycle but we have no records of any of them. go in the dark. roleplay as the average rat in new york city without throwing your computer. give me 200 dollars. None of your blorbos will be happy btw. you should kill yourself NOW 🌩🌩‼️

I’ve considered myself an mcr enjoyer for a good while now but for some reason I’ve really only ever listened to the black parade album (yeah I know I know; idk why; probably can blame it on neurodivergency somehow)
But anyway I added danger days and three cheers for sweet revenge to my playlist recently to try and get into more. And then today during a break when I didn’t have classes I did my little thing (which is walking around the campus in the rain with my earbuds blasting. It’s the best part of the day unequivocally) and anyway, SING came on and hooollllly fuck. well I think my head exploded in real life. slash pos. Holy fuck. <- this user is unlocking new and improved mcr emotions at an impressive rate
YIPPEE!!!!!!! the whole danger days album unlocked a new part of my brain for me when i first got into it and even now sometimes i'll be listening to a song and i'll hear a lyric and i'll understand it totally differently in my brain and it makes me insane. i love my chemical romance welcome to dangerdays world :D

Hey no worries i have to interact with people i dont wanna all the time & have to take a moment & not be like that myself. Oh shit its school time already? Maybe some will know but the beauty is that eventually you reach a point where nobody will who you dont want to so fuck it we ball on that one. Lakeside beaches are also very good i think mt fuji in japan has some like. Lakeside beaches that offer a good view of it & i wanna see that. Im not sure what the definition of fancier english words is here but mostly you dont need them in my experience anyways. Even specific words have workarounds. Ah so making it easier & more generic but not going into the details like they used to. Thats a shame especially with how confusing english can get. I went one town over a week or two ago & it was 108 F, or 42 c i had to convert that, at like 8 at night i was dying. Totally fair sometimes knowing when to hold off is best & its nice to enjoy stuff later for certain things. Turned out i had enough for 2 ten pulls but kafka came home on the first so my luck got burned for a bit i think. Cant wait to use her. The story is interesting but ive been having. So much fun diving in fontaine i ignored the story for a whole day. Good luck on your gear maxing & eventual ender dragon fight! Ah yes a tough choice. That i guess boils down to how much you like your family. So good luck on that decision as well! Oh please do! I found a purple that should work with my hair just need to use it when i have time. I would like to grind more but it kills my phone battery. Oh i got sampo too but i dont think i need to worry about building yet. So no artifact grind for me. The aeons are conceptually really cool & i cant wait for more simulated universe. When i get back to it. So many side quests. My brain is a sponge for fish facts mostly. Its weird. Like antarctic sponges are theorized to live so long because the low temperature & high pressure slow their aging dramatically
thanks ahdfkjg i appreciate it. it is indeed school time already! i start in just under a week but the beginning of the school year is pushed back this year bc september 1st is on a friday so its starting on the 4th instead! yippee! and yeah defo but luckily the people who already know, that being my mother and a couple friends, are very chill about it so even More fuck it we ball. yeah im pretty sure it does but not completely certain. speaking of which maybe ill go see mt fuji if i end up traveling more when older. and well its hard to explain shdfj i mostly mean like, rarer words used, for example, in poetry, or more specific words, lets say the parts of a ship- which, yes, i DO know the basic ones, but theres a couple that i only know the polish equivalent of [for example, a dziób is called a prow! i had to look that up!]. but yeah it doesnt really hinder my day to day understanding of the language, its just occasionally mildly annoying. and yeah it is like that but oh well. GOOD LORD 42C????? id just Perish. the moment it starts getting uncomfortable for me is like 27c [80f]. yeah ill see What Life Brings!! and oh congrats!!! tbh i didnt really have the energy to play star rail recently sjdnflgk but at least i converted that time into actually drawing so id say its for the better. and oh cool!!! im back in warsaw so ill probably check it out any day now sjdkfjm if im not too busy with rain world that is. god i love rain world. and thank you!!!! its extremely funny bc while ive liked minecraft for YEARS now i never actually ended up beating the game cos i have an unfortunate tendency to abandon saves.... but ill try to finally do it. beat the fake gamer allegations. i do actually like my family, or at least my mother since im not really close with my half siblings [all adults, also 2 outta 3 dont moved out of poland] or the rest [live like half the country away] so yeah i still have to think about it. anyway, dye update: i actually managed to do it! finally. thank god. and oh i feel you, my phone was dying bc of memory so i play on pc now. best decision of my life tbh. YEAHHH im so curious about them...... SWARM DISASTER GAME MODE SOON THO....... AND EPIC thats so cool!!! i love hearing fish facts knowing damn well im Not going to remember anything

The entire row solace is in
YIPPEE under da cut obvi :P
The first two, Kestrel and Rose, are also grouped w Amaya! I debated whether to include her here as well but then I got an ask about her separately so its all good :]
they live in the same universe as Rain and Evie! basically in all basicness they live in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk without the punk world, invaded at random by giant half-animal half-computer creatures from other worlds. the rest is in rain and evie's ask, but rio and ketrel along w their big sibling Amaya come from a different background than those two. the Namaska family lived in the rich uptown area growing up, never wanting for anything or distinctly aware of the chaos in the world around them. They had a normal, upper-class upbringing, they're polite and hardworking children with loving parents. What do you think happens next?
their part of the neighbourhood is decimated by an animal invasion. they only survive because they were in the basement when the things came rampaging, crushing homes and killing people. the creatures killed their parents, and upended their neighbourhood. suddenly they are left homeless orphans, and despite their previous comfortable status in this small neighbourhood, no one spares them a glance to help them. they're forced to leave the area they grew up in, and move down to the poorer outskirts where there's vacant space. they need to save what money they do have, so instead of spending it on a home, they move into a subway station that they know has been long abandoned. they need work, so they go to the only place that's always hiring: the military. they're specially trained to stop the creatures that were responsible for destroying their home.
Kestrel is the youngest sibling of the three. they're loyal and brave, a great warrior with a strong heart and sense of pride in where they come from. they are the one who requests that they work with the military in honour of their parents, because they want to save others that pain. he's also very, very impatient, rash, and stubborn. he's hard to calm down once he's worked up, and he can get very obnoxious when he believes he's in the right. this is a lesser-seen side of his personality, as he's very private and reserved, still shadowed by the pain of losing everything. usually she only bickers with her siblings, and other people will see this from a distance. she comes off as the quietest of the three, and the one with the most ill-tempered demeanour. she likes to be alone, anyway, and is content to live in the shadow of her siblings and work on getting stronger. she's a melee fighter, skilled with close-range weaponry, and loves to get up close and personal with snapping jaws and crushing hooves to feel the adrenaline of killing the thing that almost killed her. she's also a skilled marksman, so she's not inept if the target is too far
rose, the middle child, is protective and overbearing. his siblings are his last connection to the life they had, his tether to a childhood that's completely erased. he focuses on them, their welbeing and happiness, because otherwise he can be deeply insecure and unsure. he needs to be directed by somebody, once his parents and now his elder sibling amaya or his commanding officers. otherwise he tends to wander and to dilly-dally, unsure of what he wants or needs, erratic in his behaviours and desires. He does what interests him in the moment, but isn't sure what he'd like out of life. he makes promises he can't keep and starts tasks he can't finish because he feels like at his core he's missing the thing that motivation and focus stem from. and he doesn't know what that thing is. but his siblings make him feel at home and fulfilled, and so his siblings are where he directs his energy. rio is their team's scout, and is trained to track and shoot like a hunter, as well as keep an eye out for people who need help.
next, adrian and nikolai, who i got from you! set in the old west for some flair, adrian is a vampire hunter, trained by his elder sister angel, who is a renowned pro in their town for what they do. while angel is often gone with other hunters protecting people that contact her, adrian is left at home tending the family farm and hanging around in town. he wants to be good at this like his sister, but just isn't physically up to snuff. his movements are clumsy and hesitant and he doesn't have the rage and passion that would normally give one adrenaline-strength. he's just so normal, so mild-mannered and unsure. he turns this anger at his inability to serve a purpose into a vicious hatred of vampires. he studies them and tracks them hoping that he'll someday be practiced enough to fight one.
he meets niko at a saloon :] niko is laid-back, friendly, and chill, everything adrian isn't. while they don't hit it off right away, as adrian finds niko quite loud at first, as adrian drinks and loosens up, he and niko get to talking about why they're there, and what they'd rather be doing. niko likes adrian's thoughts of grandeur and decides to take him out to hunt a deer (they r drunk ❤️), showing off incredibly impressive tracking and hunting skills. adrian loves the feeling of usefulness he gets from learning new skills and feeling them manifest in a tangible way. he asks niko to help him with his physical prowess, as they seem to get along well and adrian needs the help. He explains that his real fortune, and his real desire, lies in hunting vampires, not animals. Niko finds this quite amusing, and reveals that Adrian is begging a vampire to help him hunt vampires. Adrian is dumbfounded, and when he refused to follow Niko back to town, Niko just leaves.
Adrian can't unfeel that rush of pride and satisfaction he got. And he can't unsee how human that vampire's eyes were. And he wonders if he can ever kill something that can look at him as a friend.
Adrian is stubborn and set in his ways. He knows what's best, and if he doesn't he wants to find that out on his own. He's forward and honest, believing that there's no need to hide things from people in our short time on earth 🌍💕 he's loyal and trustworthy, he sticks to his guns and his guns include protecting and supporting those he loves. He can take a while to come around to others and their ideas because of this, but he's always going to work towards the greater good once he sees the whole picture
Niko is charming and joyful, and just as hardworking as Adrian is. He works towards better things for himself and the people around him, always choosing to value a fellow over a circumstance or thing or place. He can come off as very flaky and noncommittal for this, as he's always deciding that something else is more important. He's kind until he has the slightest reason not to be; he can be quite sardonic and guarded if something isn't going his way or he thinks he can tip things in his favour with the right persona. He's a serious people person, but at the end of the day he's a charming loner who can't pick an ideology but is always there to help a friend
Finally, Solace! His story is set in ~early 1900s Canada. Orphaned in his teenage years, Solace lives on the streets of Saskatchewan for years, struggling to keep himself safe when so many other people face the same risks and want the same things that he does (WW1 was a financially awful time for Canada. Naturally with this people hurt for things like food, clothes, shelter, jobs). Fed up with the city he grew up in, the familiar coldness of everyone toward him and each other, he decides to ride the rails east, toward the faster-developing parts of the country. The trip is long, though, and you're not necessarily supposed to be hitching free rides on trains across the country. He's caught by antagonistic railway police multiple times, learning to be sneakier and more vigilant when he's inhabiting someone else's space. He ends up breaking his arm failing to mount a moving train, and has to nurse himself back to health in a barely-there town he doesn't know. Here he falls in with a small group of boys who promise to protect him on exchange for work. Desperately fed up with scrounging, running, and being caught, Solace agrees to help these boys in exchange for shelter, food, and money. He learns to steal, pickpocket, pawn, and scam. He helps them to ambush and steal from people. He hates that he doesn't have anything to say about himself but that he's become a great thief.
He stays with them into adulthood, though, giving up on the thought of living alone in a constantly growing city in favour of staying safe with a group of people he sees as family now, parents, siblings, and a home he never had. He never refuses anything they ask him to do, knowing that it could mean the difference between someone's life and death.
Solace is determined, hardworking, and crafty. He's had to learn many things very quickly though his life, and has become very adaptable and understanding because of it. Anything can go any way at any time, and he's okay with the world shifting as long as he lives another day on it. He has a lot to say about architecture and urban development, very aware of the world around him and what would create solutions to problems big and small, as well as what makes a good home, or a good town. Because of his dependence on people to survive, he can be wishy-washy and give in to doing what he's told or "what's best." But he has a deep sense of right and wrong, and becomes uncomfortable with hurting or disadvantaging people who won't recover. He seems very strong and focused, the kind of person who would build a house ground-up, and he is. When he's given time and space, Solace is good-natured and creative, enjoying telling stories and solving problems. But he knows when to shut off his whimsy for the sake of survival.
His name is self-chosen when he meets Honour and Journey, at first on the train. They named themselves after what they wanted most in life, and Solace really liked that.

Has it really been darn near a year since I've written anything here
Geez, no way to 'catch up' so I'll start over :) Maybe I'll start with Sydney Sweet's idea of answering some 'about me' questions. Thanks Sydney! 1. My favorite color is....depends...sometimes red, sometimes green. 2. My favorite movie/movies.......Shawshank Redemption, Fiddler on the Roof, On Golden Pond, Major League to name a few. 3. If I had the opportunity to meet one blogger from this site, it would be........Morgan Ellis and she's coming to NYC next week! Yippee!!! 9. Surrender To Daniel’s Top 250 Tracks Of 2017ish (160-141)
Tumblr media
Opening Blab
250-201
200-181
180-161
160. Luke Combs - When It Rains
Luke Combs leads the charmed life that having your redneck vices pay off for you can provide. It’s a country breakup anthem about the silver lining paying off as a golden ticket. Well, being required to go fishing sounds like a fate worse than death to this guy*, but that’s not the point I suppose.
159. HAIM - Want You Back
I’m not sure if it was the Taylor Instagram residue or what, but 2017 wasn’t a spectacular year for HAIM momentum. Arena conquering being put on hold and all that. It’s not like the sisters Haim lost the ability to craft weaponized soft rock numbers. “Want You Back” is five star proof of that.
158. RVIVR - The Tide
"The Tide” is burn the treehouse down type pop-punk fury that gets in your face like a sweaty hockey goon’s glove giving you a face wash.
157. Torres - Helen In The Woods
Lurching, advancing unhinged trauma-rock that knows exactly what it’s doing and practically throws itself across your speakers like it’s possessed or something.
156. Partner - Play The Field
Power pop fawning over an athlete that goes off like a roman candle and should be put in care packages for junior high students.
155. Manuel Turizo - Una Lady Como Tú
“Una Lady Como Tú” is a preposterously infectious love song that deserves its own modestly budgeted film based off of it.
154. The Moonlandingz featuring Rebecca Lucy Taylor - The Strangle Of Anna
"The Strangle of Anna” teeters into the realm of intended parody in its Lou Reed washed fuzz rock sway and acidic-yet-sweet core which only binds its properties into a more effective weapon.
153. April - Mayday
Kinetic pop that swirls around like a Gravitron that plays lost 80s buddy cop movie soundtracks at all hours.
152. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - Drowning
A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie flexes like rap’s Poseidon over soap opera intro piano. Why don’t more folks do this?
151. Cassius - Ibifornia (Myd Remix)
From what I can tell, last year’s Cassius record was about as warmly received as the return of whooping cough. No big deal, this ultra-danceable Myd remix completely justifies its creation. You should see the lummox grooving I do to this. (I’m the lummox. Not the song. It’s unlummoxlike.)
150. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Harajuku Iyahoi
I’m not quite sure why the dancing logs in the video are wearing championship belts (has DDT taken that step?) but I wouldn’t want to live in a world without them. In standard Kyary style, it’s her command and poise leading this jumbo-sized J-Pop march that truly amazes. Once again, the dancing logs (log bears?) were pretty cool.
149. Goodbye Honolulu - Typical
Politely sleazy garage preening that feels like it fell out of a dimension where Big Shiny Tunes was still farting around.
148. Electric Six - I’ll Be In Touch
“I’ll Be In Touch” gets the “yeah the song’s 2016 but the video came out in 2017″ treatment and good fucking job Big Mac for making that call! MOVE OVER, HOT BENCH! I RENDER THE VERDICTS HERE! Anyway, the video’s spectacular, but the tune’s no slouch either. (I totally didn’t know get the Billy Joel homage business at first. Strip me of my judgedom!) “She’s the girl with the zits, I love her, I want her for Christmas,” wails Dick Valentine in the guise of a desperate man that falls into bouts of oozing toxic machismo. It’s much more danceable than I’m making it sound.
147. DJ Khaled featuring Beyoncé and Jay-Z - Shining
Beyoncé takes a well-earned victory lap and does it in a way where you truly feel blessed by her superhuman existence. Jay-Z is also on this from what I understand. I never really stick around that far.
146. Sløtface - Empire Records
"Empire Records” is whirling pop-punk that places several emotions into a capsule and slingshots it into your face with love.
145. Tank - When We
Christ, this is quite a concentrated dose of sex isn’t it? Reliable R&B hero Tank comes across like the inventor of fucking on this bedroom cut. Whenever I try to talk in a “sensual” manner I just sound like I’m loopy from a dangerous bout of sunstroke.
144. Jerry Williams - I’m Not In Love With You
Twinkling indie pop that packs a wallop. (Always be careful packing your wallop, buds.)
143. Gothic Tropic - How Life Works
Luxurious quicksand masquerading as detoxed L.A. pensive indie musing.
142. Girl Ray - Don’t Go Back To Ten
Girl Ray have crafted a strolling and vaguely shambolic swaying rock charmer that takes up residence in your soul and comes with some lovely video choreo.
141. Ski Mask The Slump God - Babywipe
There’s a portion of the video where a tiny Ski Mask The Slump God rocks out on a coffee table like he’s fucking Kim Mitchell in the “Go For A Soda” promo. I think I flipped a table and screamed the first time I saw it. There may have even been a “yippee!” in there. I feel no shame.

Reliving Keith Jackson’s perfect call at the end of the perfect college football game
Ahead of 2017’s Texas vs. USC reunion, SB Nation spoke to the three people who called the 2006 Rose Bowl masterpiece with the legend: Dan Fouts, Holly Rowe, and Todd Harris.
You remember the play, don’t you? Vince Young, Texas’ superstar quarterback, scampers to the end zone to end USC’s 34-game winning streak and bring a national championship to the Horns for the first time in over three decades. It’s universally considered one of the greatest endings and most beloved games ever.

But do you remember the soundtrack to that famous play? Dan Fouts does.
“I can recite it to you,” Fouts told SB Nation. “‘Fourth down, for the national title. Young, going for the corner ... he’s got it.’”
On that night, Fouts was shoulder-to-shoulder with broadcasting great Keith Jackson. Along with the parade, the San Gabriel mountains, and New Year’s Day, nothing is more synonymous with the Rose Bowl then Jackson is.
His Roopville, Georgia twang turned Lendale White’s last name into “Hoo-wite” right before the USC back was stopped on a critical fourth down. Trojan defenders weren’t tired in the fourth quarter; they were “beleaguered,” per Jackson. The Longhorns didn’t have two timeouts left on that final drive; they had two “times out.” USC was “Southern California.” Such was the dignity of his speech.
Part of the call’s greatness: how understated it was. Play-by-play announcers aren’t supposed to be bigger than the game.
The man who coined the phrase “The Grandaddy of Them All” always spoke with reverence about this particular venue. This was how he opened the telecast:
The royalty of college football is in assembly at the Rose Bowl, 2006. Bush, Leinart, Young, and their legion. By consensus, the teams rank 1 and 2, with nary a whisper of dissent. The site for this ultimate showdown in college football is one of the most famed arenas of sport: the Rose Bowl, where the festival of postseason play was started more than 100 years ago in the city of Pasadena, California.
Jackson’s colleagues spoke of his humility, which showed from beginning to end of that game.
“I can remember it clear as day, ‘cause I was standing in the end zone on the goal line,” Harris said. “And I saw Vince Young scramble, and I thought, ‘They’re not gonna get to him,’ and Keith just: ‘He’s got it,’ and he laid out. And the fans — half the fans in the burnt orange and the USC fans were just dumbfounded — and he just laid out and didn’t yap over it and just let the moment play out.”
Both Fouts and Harris said that’s the way it’s supposed to be done, a model for how young broadcasters should call big moments.
“It’s television,” Fouts said. “People can see. Too many announcers now have got to fill the words when they’re not needed.”
Jackson will tell you that the stage is for the players, not some “fat-butted announcer trying to make a name for himself.”

Since 1966, Jackson had been ABC’s voice to go along with the college football things “people can see.”
He’d done just about everything you could do, as far as broadcasting was concerned, but his love was college football. In 1998, Jackson retired for the first time, near the age of 70.
He was talked back into it by ABC, which allowed him to only call games on the West Coast, making travel easier for him and his wife from their Southern California home. He mostly handled Pac-10 games in his second tour of duty, typically paired with Fouts and Harris.
“That might be the best crew that I’ve ever worked with, as far as director, producer, stats people, everything,” Harris said. “The camera people, the audio people. And then to be mixed into that, I literally felt that I’d been elevated to the skyrise penthouse. Keith is what he is on TV. He’s a class act.”
Fouts recalled broadcast booths with lines outside, as people waited to “come in and kiss the pope’s ring.”
Even the traditional Thursday pregame sitdowns with players and coaches had new meaning.
“I remember when Alabama came to the Rose Bowl [Stadium] to play UCLA [in 2000], and several of the Alabama players came and had their sit-down with Keith Jackson,” Harris said. “And I remember distinctly, one of the tailbacks, I remember he walked out of the interview with Keith, and he said to a bunch of his buddies that were waiting in the hall, ‘I just spoke with the voice of God.’”
Rowe only worked with Jackson twice: that Rose Bowl, plus a bowl in San Diego earlier that postseason, so she could work into the crew’s rhythm. Rowe had been added after Lynn Swann left to run for political office.
“I’ll never forget, I had to do a pregame hit, and I tossed it back up to the booth, and I was so terrified. Do I say, ‘Back to you Mr. Jackson?’” Rowe said. “I didn’t know what to call him. I was so scared. I definitely had grown up listening to him my whole life. He was college football to me.”
“[An Alabama player] walked out of the interview with Keith, and he said to a bunch of his buddies that were waiting in the hall, ‘I just spoke with the voice of God.’”
Rowe calls it, to this day, the most hyped game she’d ever seen.
But the noise was drowned inside the Texas and USC camps. Reggie Bush, Young, and Matt Leinart were mythical on their campuses. Mack Brown and Pete Carroll were patriarchs in their prime, returning swaggering success to blueblood programs.
Texas had won 24 of its last 25 games. USC had won 34 straight. Big stages were nothing new. The Trojans call Los Angeles home anyway, and the Longhorns had played in the 2005 Rose Bowl win over Michigan, an epic game in its own right.
“I would just go to practice by myself and talk with Mack Brown quietly, and you know, we did kinda go about our prep in much of the same fashion, but then the hype around the game was swirling,” Rowe said. “So it was a very unique — it felt like you were in this little, quiet, private bubble, prepping for the game amidst chaos.”
Harris and Fouts had worked with USC multiple times, and the trio had called Texas’ win over Oklahoma in Dallas. Brown told SB Nation that Jackson requested to do that game, with at least a thought that it would be his last Red River Shootout.
“Not one time in my many years of having Keith call our games did he ever say anything that we asked him not to say,” Brown said. “He was very quick to say, ‘I would like to have information. I would like to know backgrounds, but also tell me how far I can go.’”
The crew’s prep week in the L.A. area included watching practices, where Brown recalled seeing Jackson with Texas coaching giant Darrell Royal, whose name is on the Longhorns’ stadium, and country singer Mac Davis.
Rowe had memories of going to the Tournament of Roses Parade with her father and walking to the game. On the eve of Texas-USC, she had her time with the legend.
“It was just me and Keith Jackson up in the press booth looking out over the field,” Rowe said. “And him telling me stories about games that he had called, in that booming voice. And it’s just this private moment between me and Keith Jackson and him telling me football stories. That will go down as one of the greatest moments of my career.”
For all of the pomp he brought to the proceedings, Jackson reverted to a younger man as kickoff approached.
Some of his final words before toe met leather: “My only expression is, we’re gonna play football, yippee. I thought we’d never get here.”

Fouts had spent five seasons with Jackson, sandwiched around a stint at Monday Night Football. Jackson had done play-by-play for that series’ first season, and when the two had talked over breakfast one day about Fouts leaving for the NFL, Jackson said, “Ya gotta go.” They reunited in 2002 and did the BCS Championship between Miami and Ohio State.
Before Texas-USC, Jackson hadn’t announced he was calling it quits, but Fouts had an inkling.
“That was the tough part about the assignment, because here is the greatest college football — the voice of college football,” Fouts said. “This was gonna be his last game. The thing about it was, it may have been his best game ever, too. He was all over it. He was perfect that night.”
Right before Young’s Longhorns lined up on that fourth down, Jackson said with a chuckle and a nod to his Bible Belt roots: “I kinda feel like Job. I’m too old for this.” When it was over, Young’s game wasn’t just good; the QB had “stepped beyond the pale.”
As a USC player knelt in the corner of the end zone and confetti rained, Jackson pointed out the “agony of defeat,” just like former colleague Jim McKay did in the famous opening to ABC’s Wide World of Sports, where Jackson had served as a reporter and announcer. Jackson’s last telecast ended with a bridge to the beginning.
The broadcast crew that Harris referred to as a family then sent its granddaddy out in style.
“We sat in the parking lot with all our crew after the game, and Keith had been kind enough to bring a case of his favorite wine, and we kinda unwound,” Fouts said. “We were well aware of the significance of the game.
“I felt really good about Keith’s performance and the performance of our entire crew. As a broadcaster, that’s really what you cared about most. How your team did, not the two teams on the field. Our presentation of that game was as good as the game itself.”
Part of his call from his final game now graces the elevator to the Rose Bowl’s television booth.

Jackson’s call of Young’s TD will remain in posterity for another reason.
That was the last true Rose Bowl to double as a national championship game, for the foreseeable future. The BCS would add a standalone championship to its rotation following 2006. The 2013 season’s title game was at the venue, but wasn’t technically a Rose Bowl. The Rose is now in the College Football Playoff’s semifinal rotation. The Rose Bowl is still special, but it’s no longer for all the marbles, like it was that night.
Harris has had plenty of gigs, but if you gave him the choice of starring in the booth on a smaller game or taking the sideline for a Jackson broadcast, he’d pick Jackson every time.
“I know when I get older, I’ll be one of those guys that people will say, ‘Hey, did you work with Howard Cossell?’ Harris said. “And I’ll say, ‘No, I worked with Keith Jackson. He was the voice of college football, and I’m a better person for it.’”
