A day at the beach

Robin x Male reader

I can’t believe it has been more than two years. When I think about it, it feels like yesterday. Then again, it has been so long ago. I’m waiting on the balcony for my friend to show up. One letter was all that it took for me to get here and wait for her.

The sun was rising and the town I was staying in reached all the way down the hill, to the beach. After two hours, I saw her walking towards me.

I couldn’t help myself but smile when I saw her and when she saw me, she smiled back. Her lovely smile and friendly face made her my best friend in the world.

Nico Robin.

When we reunited after so long, we talked for hours. All the adventures she had with her captain and crew. They all sounded so much fun. I secretly wished that one day, she would ask me to join them.

‘How about we go to the beach? I know I've seen the sea enough but I will never get tired of the beach’ she asked and I agreed.

The sun was shining brightly and the temperature was rising rapidly. I had to buy a parasol to get some shade. Robin laughed while putting on a pair of sunglasses.

‘I guess I’m too used to the sun on an open ship’ she said with a smile.

When we arrived at the beach, the sand was already burning underneath my feet. I had to tiptoe through the sand until we found a nice spot to relax.

‘I will change into my swimsuit,’ Robin said with a laugh. Without hesitation or shame, she already started removing her clothes and ashamed of seeing anything, I quickly turned around.

‘You can at least warn me’ I say to her and I can hear her laugh.

When she was ready, I turned around. She was wearing a nice black one piece swimsuit that matched her dark hair. If you would see her for the first time, I could understand why boys and girls would follow her with their eyes and instantly fall in love. But not me. No. I love Nico Robin but she was as precious as a sister to me. The bond we have had in a short time was something out of a lifetime. I needed her and she needed me. To be there as friends.

‘How about some volleyball? Like we used to play?’ she asks.

‘Prepared to lose?’ I ask her and I smile at her while I already run towards the playfield.

‘No cheating!’ I yell at her before we start.

Robin nods and starts the game by throwing the ball at me. As I try to move through the sand, I manage to jump and toss the ball. Quick and flexible as she is, Robin moves in to hit the ball back.

I see the ball coming at me and I’m at a good spot to really punch it back hard. The moment I see the ball coming towards me, I can hear Robin saying something.

‘Dos fleur’ and I can see her crossing her arms in front of her body.

Suddenly, I can see two arms coming from behind me, hitting the ball and smashing it to the ground.

‘I win’ she simply says as she smiles with closed eyes.

‘That is cheating’ I say with a sarcastic tone and all Robin could do is laugh with her lovely smile.

After a while, we got back to our towels and the temperature was rising to it’s high point. I think I can sweat more than all the water in the ocean. While Robin is laying and reading a book, I look up at the sky and think about our day and the friendship we share.

‘Say Robin. How come we are just laying here after seeing each other for such a long time. Don’t we have better things to do?’

Robin lays her book down, takes her sunglasses off and looks at me.

‘Are you enjoying this? Our time together now?’ she asks.

I almost feel attacked, as if I sound not satisfied with our time together. ‘No, no. That’s not it. I just wonder if you would love to do more than just hang around, reading and stuff. You know.’

I turn to my side and see her smiling at me.

‘I am enjoying our time like this. And if you are enjoying it too, that should be enough. Right?’

She is right. Like always. Robin was always the wise one to teach me about the simple things in life.

‘Right’ I say with a smile. The doubts I had before are gone and I feel relieved.

‘Hold on’ I say while I jump up and make my way across the sand.

‘Ouch, ouch’ I say while jumping through the hot sand and hearing Robin laugh behind me.

A few minutes later, I returned with two cups of ice cream.

‘Here’ and I gave her a cup.

She looks at the yellow ice cream before taking a bite.

‘Vanilla. My favourite’ she says. She smiles while enjoying her bite.

I take a bite of my blue ice cream and I can see her looking at me.

‘What kind of flavour do you have?’ she asks with interest.

‘Oh. Sea salt ice cream. I heard about it and I wanted to try it for a long time.’

My thoughts go out that I am happy that it was my moment with Robin to try something like this.

‘Can I have a bite?’ she asks me as she leans in.

‘Ofcourse.’

I hand her the cup and she takes a bite of my blue ice cream.

‘It’s salty but sweet’ she says, still processing the flavour from her bite.

Her answer makes me giggle inside. Somehow the flavour reminds me of Robin herself. Her good and bad side.

While the day moves on and the sun starts to set, we sit in silence for a long time.

‘The sunset is different here than on the ship. I guess I have to come by more often’ she says.

Those words gave me a warm feeling. Knowing that I could see my friend more, was the best feeling in the world.
