Beastars 18
Tumblr media
** - Beastars, vol. 18. Paru Itagaki. C. 152 - As one might expect, segregation instead of improving students' safety only augmented tension between both groups. While the Carnivores act like fairly ordinary teenagers (though one can assume that for a strict Japanese society, their behavior is far too rowdy), the hebivores seem more terrified than ever. - Jack's depression, however, comes from another place, as we'll soon see. 153 - The entire chapter happens in one location and with only two characters, not counting flaskbacks. - "You've surpassed me and grown up on your own" --it's evident that the root of Jack's anguish isn't the school's situation, as Legosi assumes, nor the situation of dogs, as Jack states. It's simply that feels Legosi abandoned him. 154 - The origin of the species. We've seen that while most of the story is well known (Haru was taking a college class on it), the novelty is the presence of the whale, an almost mythical figure... - ...that is quite real, as we soon see. 155 - Another chapter with few characters, now primarily focused on Bill. - And with a new perspective: Louis and Legosi's moralistic diatribes have given Bill an insecurity complex. 156 - Be careful what you wish for! Free complains that the ghetto is increasingly gentrified, but in the end it becomes even more savage and may have taken Dolph's life. - The use of blood torches to spread their scene and thus mark territory is one of the most... animalistic traits these criminal groups have exhibited yet. 157 - Adler the reaper being Louis' favorite character can be interpreted in several ways. Perhaps it's simply the role he worked hardest for. - Oguma's homophobia is notorious, making it clear that if Louis proves incapable of breeding, Oguma will have him deemed worthless. - Up to a point, Lousi and Legosi have swapped roles, but only marginally. Legosi takes the Adler character, but poorly acted and only to help his friends (though he does accomplish this), while Louis tries to discern the nature of the meat market (but presenting himself as a highly priced product). 158 - Apparently, even elite students like Louis and Jack are unaware that there is a cabal of Beastars under the high one --Louis believes Beastar is only ever a singular title. 159 - Appearances can be deceiving: Sen and Kyuu may seem harmless but are quite merciless. She, tiny and seemingly fragile, uses brute strength, while he figures out their opponents' weak spots. 160 **

Now We Know About the Facts Of Lougosi And How Most Fans Find It As Endgame
Trivia
Legosi and Louis are both canonically physically attracted to each other. They are the reason they realize their carnivore/herbivore fetish. In Chapter 91, Louis realizes his carnivore fetish in the car with Ibuki, but states that he thinks it all began with Legoshi. His words are "Because their bodies are strong, they have a profound sense of camaraderie. Because they hunger for meat, they always look like they're suffering somehow...why did it take me so long to realize this? I like carnivores. I think I have for a long time now, all because of that idiotic underclassman (Legosi)." In Chapter 114, Legosi realizes his herbivore fetish when admiring Louis. His words are "I look at his face and get the usual thought. Why are herbivores such beautiful life forms?"
It's revealed in one of the extras in the manga (Unpacking Legoshi's Belongings) that Legosi started carrying a nail file in his backpack after Louis drew attention to his hands [2].
In an omake surrounding Chapter 76, Itagaki makes a joke about Louis and Legoshi kissing/being intimate. The omake shows two girls talking to each other. One says, "I saw two guys hugging on the balcony today" (referring to Louis and Legoshi hugging on the balcony in Chapter 76). The other goes, "did you close the curtain for them?"
In the last panel of Chapter 77, the narration for Louis and Legosi's hug state that "even with their environments changed, they never lost their trust in each other. Only the moon sees them now.""The moon is beautiful" (tsuki ga kirei desu ne) is a euphemism for "I love you" in Japan.
Louis states that his leg hurts whenever something bad happens to Legosi. This was true for when Legosi got hurt fighting the drug cartel, and for when Legosi was shot by Melon. This is the only indication of anything supernatural in Beastars,
Louis can be seen blushing and fanning himself in one panel of Chapter 88, in the scene where Legosi is cross-dressed in heels and makeup.
In multiple panels of Chapter 96, the composition of the scenes compares Legosi's relationship with Louis to Riz's relationship with Tem. This is likely due to the fact that Legosi and Louis represents a good carnivore-herbivore relationship, unlike Riz and Tem. However, it is an interesting comparison because Riz's feelings toward Tem were heavily hinted to be romantic.Riz says in the scene, "it's the only thing...my feelings for him (Tem) are much stronger than your feelings for Louis-Senpai. Because he (Tem) never felt the same for me."
In Chapter 143, Louis can be seen blushing when he is with Legosi and the Shishigumi.Louis does not blush during his kiss with Juno and during his date with her in Chapter 194.
Legosi is the only character in the series (only Oguma, Kyuu, and San, who were part of Louis' past, as well as Bill who found out on his own and Ibuki) who knows about Louis being sold as meat in the black market in childhood.
Louis is the only character in the series who knows about Legosi's dreams of becoming an insectarium keeper (according to Legosi, Chapter 158).
Louis is the only character other than Jack and Yahya who knows Legoshi's grandfather.
Legosi is the only character in the series who has made Louis laugh on-screen, and is also the first and only character to see him cry. This occurs in Chapter 88, when Louis laughs at Legosi's cross dressing. The latter occurs in Chapter 95, when Legoshi is about to battle Riz.This excludes Louis' hysterical laughter when asking the Shishigumi to eat him, as it was laughter caused by insanity, not amusement.
The style in which Itagaki draws panels draws certain scenes between Legosi and Louis (light grey airbrush with flecks and hazy overlays) is the same style she uses for scenes between Riz and Tem and scenes between Legoshi and Haru.
The music that plays for Legoshi and Louis' play scene is the same that plays in scenes between Legoshi and Haru. The music is/is a rendition of "Beastars classical OST" by Satoru Kosaki.
Louis and Legoshi has appeared alongside each other in more promotional artwork than any two characters (Legoshi and Haru included).
Both Louis' and Legosi's sexuality is hard to categorize: Louis states he has grown to be exclusively attracted to carnivores (first mentioned in Chapter 91, confirmed in Chapter 143 as he vomits trying to have sex with a female red deer). When Oguma asks Louis whether he likes women in chapter 157, Louis does not answer. Similarly, Legosi is exclusively attracted to herbivores - mentioned and confirmed in chapter 114. Legosi also admits Pina (a male herbivore) to be attractive in chapter 66. Both are confirmed to have a carnivore/herbivore fetish.
While the author's original idea was to make Legoharu an endgame, there are many hints for a quite possible, future romantic relationship between Legosi and Louis after all - or at least for Lougosi being a semi-canon ship in a spin-off. It for sure has a big potential for eventually becoming more than just a fanon pairing. A lot of the Beastars fans are also questioning Louis's sexuality - especially after the chapter 157 in manga - and think he might be gay or bisexual. One thing's for sure - Paru Itagaki is teasing Legosi and Louis's relationship quite a lot and it's hard to say, if it's only ship teasing for the Lougosi shippers content, queerbaiting, or is she considering them really being together at some point. Additionally, we from interviews that Paru Itagaki does not outline all scenes beforehand (such as the LegoHaru scene in the love hotel), creating more potential for Lougosi in the future.
I knew there had to be a reason why so many fell for this ship early on, there are key facts explaining it

BEASTARS-SPECULATION #8: Could her role be an Allegory? *May Contain Spoilers*
Since people seem to like my little speculations and theories well enough, I figure I’ll do more of them. Though I might try and limit myself to one or two a week after this one, otherwise I might forget about my comittment to reality.
Anyway, today I figured I’d talk a little about Beastars and it’s potential uses of allegory. For those unfamiliar, allegory is pretty much a hidden meaning within a story, often of the moral or political nature. This could be in the form of a plotpoint or a character representing something within the narrative. A famous example of this would be the book by George Orwell, Animal Farm (1945), which is an allegorical fable that with the help of barnyard animals explain and critique the rise of Stalinism.
When it comes to Beastars, it would be easy to guess what the overall plot is an allegory of: the struggles of cultural coexistence and issues of racism in our society, similarly to Disney’s Zootopia. Though personally, I think that unlike the former, which is more closely tied to it’s moral, Beastars concerns itself a bit more with telling character-driven stories. However, that is not the subject of today’s speculation.
What I speculate around is the role of a recurring character within the series: Els, the Angora Goat, and what she could be an allegory of.
Tumblr media
For anyone who has read the first few chapters of the manga or seen the first episode of the anime, you know who this is. She is a 17-year old member of the drama club, who like the other students are shocked by the sudden murder and devouring of Tem, a fellow member. Like other herbivores at the school, she instantly becomes suspicious of surrounding carnivores, as is often the case whenever these incidents occur within this universe. She is especially is fearful of another member of the club: a grey wolf named Legosi, who is considered a creepy loner. She, to her great fear, is later approached by him when she is alone. Afraid of becoming the next victim, she grabs a pair of scissors in order to ward him off. But then, she discovers that Legosi was actually just trying to give her a loveletter from his friend Tem, as he never worked up the courage to give it to her while he was alive.
This is a transformative moment for Els, who doesn’t just realize that Legosi was much more than he seemed, but that carnivores may be a lot more than just claws and teeth.
So... What is she supposed to be? Where is the allegory you might ask. While the writing thankfully lets her be a character firsthand and a plotpoint second, her parts, while comparably minor to others, still deliver a poignant meaning when she steps forward. Besides supporting Legosi on more than one occasion, she passionately believes in the good of the drama club, becoming upset when it is revealed that Cherryton is set to adopt a segregated policy, as it will lead to mixed clubs, such as the drama club, becoming banned.
While it may not be the meaning of the author to make Els’s role allegorical, I can’t help but to feel that there’s something there as the story goes on, especially in the latest chapters. So what could she represent? Remember, this is just my personal opinion, but I think she is supposed to represent TOLERANCE.
Tolerance can be defined as “the ability or willingness to tolerate the existence of opinions or behaviour that one dislikes or disagrees with.”  Within the narrative of Beastars, this is quite important, as tolerance is an essential part of the Beastars-society that enables a modicum of coexistence. While there are more cases of tolerance within the series, such as Haru’s father accepting that Legosi is in love with his daughter, or Jack the golden retriever accepting that his childhood-friend is attracted to rabbits, Els feels like the most outspoken character when it comes to it, and maybe even it’s most vocal defender.
The most clear example of this would be in chapter 78, where students at Cherryton first find out that the school is about to adopt a segregated policy. Bill, the bengal tiger and member of the drama club is not really thrilled about it, but quickly starts to accept it, thinking it’s for the best in order to ensure that less herbivore/carnivore incidents occur. As he voices this to Els, she becomes angry and calls him out as a coward, and then proceeds to reveal that she KNOWS that Bill goes to consume herbivore meat at the back alley market, and that she ALSO knows that he has said that if she had been a female tiger, he would have “so hit that.”  Despite these things upsetting her, she accepts Bill’s flaws and considers him a friend, cause she thinks that the good things he does for the club and those around him is much more important. Her knowing his good sides as well as his bad sides is all because of the club.
Also, while this could a bit of a stretch, I think that her small size has a bit of a symbolic value, as it could represent how small tolerance really is in this society. Also, as she and the other members of the club are harrassed in chapter 157 for being the only integrated one, Bill and Aoba standing up for her could represent them standing up for tolerance in a school that barely has any anymore.
Tumblr media
I realize that this observation and theory could be nothing but speculative BS. I mean, people keep discussing the potential allegories of Lord of the Rings (1954) despite Tolkien himself saying that his work was not meant to be allegorical in any way. Rather, he favored the idea of applicability, in that while it has no hidden, deeper meanings, people can still be free to see meaning in it’s content, regardless of the times it is read in. Considering this, I recognize that Beastars in general might be more applicable, rather than a fullblooded allegory.
Summing up, Els role to me could be allegorical, but that observation in itself could be a result of an applicable quality in the series. So while there could be a hidden meaning to her character, I’m not gonna go so far as to say for certain that there is. I mean, can’t one find connections and hidden meanings in anything if you look hard enough?
Anyway, that’s what I’m thinking. How about you?

Gouhin is not amused. I can only imagine how he feels about all of this.

The Shishigumi still visit Ibuki’s grave, which is just sweet.
One of the members (because I can’t remember their names for the life of me) thinks the black market is going soft, BOY is that disproven later.
the Meat festival begins, where all of gumi’s meet to talk about meat.
we learn about the other gumi’s, the wasteland-gumi, the furbait-gumi and the  shogunate-guimi
Melon fucking walks into the scene, kills a man and everyone fucking parties (including me)
Gouhin is wondering what in the almighty fuck has happened.

Well, that’s the end of chapter 157. Louis is back in the market and is gonna check up on his gang of excitable kitty cats.
Summery time boyo’s!
Louis is dreaming about his time acting and also of gay thoughts.
Dad knows he’s gay, he knows he’s gay, we all know he’s gay, just let him say it Paru please my life depends on it.
Beastars did a cutaway gag with Legosi and honestly? it got a chuckle out of me.
The basketball team wants the Drama club to disband so they can have the room, which I mean is obv the most intense conflict in the comic by far.
Legosi looks nice in the Alder mask.
Louis is heading right for the ShiShigumi, which only means one thing. Louis and Melon interaction. Fuck yes. Please don't kill him Melon even I can’t overlook that.
Alright, that was the chapter! see you guys... When a new chapter comes out to liveblog!
