Ben, but he has to keep a lid on it in public. So he spends a lot of time lurking close with Intent.

Thera. Either real handholding or a discreet touch to show that she sees him lurking.

Roughly even. She’s seen the scars this fool has and it is a war, after all. Ben worries because he’s Ben.

It soon became clear that this wasn't going to be a light conversation, and almost instantly, Caleb lost his shit-eating grin. When he looked to Ben for confirmation, the taller man was quick to shake his head.
"I'm fine," he deflected. "Thank the good Lord I happened upon Thera when I did, because Arnold had men sent up to her room...though whether or not the plan was to find me, I'm uncertain."
The explanation of Amos' involvement did little to quell the whaler's concerns.
Caleb sucked a breath through his teeth. "Why that wily ol' bastard," he grumbled. "Perhaps he's got more than shite for brains, after all..."
"You don't have to be clever to be a traitor," Ben coolly assured them. "Either way, Thera's right -- unless we send a new face to take a look around, our days in this city are numbered. Or at the very least, we won't be able to scope about until the locals have settled."
Caleb turned his head and spat. "So much for brotherhood, eh?"
"Don't worry about it," Ben muttered, though his expression was tight. "In these trying times, it's very easy to be swayed by coin -- there's very little you could've done."
"How's your head then?" Caleb pressed. "Other than it always bein' a touch dicked in the knob, o' course."
Managing a wry smile, Ben rolled his eyes and ignored him. Looking to Thera instead, he encouraged, "Go get some rest. I imagine we'll have a long day of travel ahead of us, and stewing over tonight's events will get us nowhere."

"Why? Is it poisoned?" With an impish little smile, Benjamin leaned over her shoulder to take a look. Cakes in camp were a rarity -- and good cakes even rarer still -- so as to be expected, there were quite a few visitors who kept popping in to check on her progress.
"You know, I never took you as one who participated in holiday cheer," he observed, smirking. "Did nearly knocking out Mabel's tooth really soften you that much?"
Chuckling, he observed her preparations and resisted sticking his finger into the icing. Nowadays, it was difficult to say just what went into baking, so perhaps the true surprise would be the taste itself. "Did you need a hand? I might not look like it, but I know my way around a kitchen," he said. "In truth, I kind of had to, seeing how my mother passed when I was young."

Benjamin hummed, a look of amusement twinkling across his bright eyes. "Well, given how Brewster is the one who 'miraculously' stumbled across this concoction, I'm going to say the chances are very high."
Hesitant, he lifted his cup and took a cautious sniff, only to draw back with a slightly pinched expression. That evening, the s.oldiers and camp followers alike were huddling together for warmth and light conversation. It wasn't exactly common (or rather, approved of) for the s.exes to mingle, but the people in camp had a way of getting around such requirements.
Taking a tentative sip, Benjamin pulled back and coughed, laughing softly. "It's official," he agreed. "Definitely spiked." Swirling the brew, if only to properly mix the a.lcohol, he added, "When I was a boy, we'd have this with cinnamon. Alas, we seem to be in short supply when it comes to the finer things in life. Well..." He flashed Thera a meaningful smile. "Almost everything."

"Later? What, you mean if I'm miraculously a guest star on Jeopardy?" Ben asked with a grin. "Or at least, that's what my dad is hoping for. I'm not sure what it is about that show and the older generations, but they can't get enough of screaming answers at their television sets."
Vintage and pricy?
Ben hummed, but wasn't put-out. How could he be, given his present company?
"I like vintage," he assured her. "Most of my tastes are relics...excluding women, of course." Chuckling, he was quick to amend, "And by that, I mean women in their seventies. If I pose the risk of breaking their hip, they're officially too old for my antics."
Slipping his hands into his pockets, he smiled and fell into stride along Thera, warmed by both the fading sun and for once having a pleasant, genuinely nice conversation. Most of his discussions tended to be about his children -- or rather, someone else's -- so it wasn't every day that he got the chance to tease, exasperate, and yes, perhaps even flirt.
When they stopped beneath a café awning, Ben arched a brow and pulled out a chair for her, indicating that she sit. "High-falutin? Well, that's at the very least comforting to know. I'd hate to have to pull out my reading glasses just to look 'distinguished' enough to partake in the French roast."
Taking his own seat, Ben smiled and waved a hand. "Primary, grade, it's all the same. Truth be told, I've taught all ages since I'm also a tutor on the side, but I primarily teach fifth graders. When I started, I almost did second grade, but the powers that be were pretty adamant that I stick to the ten and eleven-year-olds. Maybe because I, myself, can share in their sense of humor from time-to-time." He brightened. "And what do you do, if you don't mind my asking? Other than having exceptional taste in art, of course."

“Uh...” Fumbling for his pocket w.atch, Ben peered down at the time and grimaced. He often viewed idleness, even sleep, as detractive from the proper g.oals at home. As far as he was concerned, he’d wasted valuable time by not continuously transcribing. “I didn’t realize how late it was,” he muttered. “Hopefully, I can get this all sorted by morning’s light.”
When Thera’s amusement remained, Ben huffed and glanced down at his hands, ensuring that they, too, weren’t covered in any offending s.tains. “Heaven forbid His E.xcellency see me like this,” he quipped. “He’d have an a.neurysm, were he to w.itness me being anything less than exemplary. I suppose an ink-spattered o.fficer is far from f.log-worthy, but you never know with his temper.”
Canting his head, he offered her a sheepish smile at her offer. “Yes, if you wouldn’t mind...thank you. My mirror is over there, but why bother getting up when I have a willing and able, not to mention, visually pleasing volunteer at the ready?”
Brightening despite his residual weariness, Ben reached inside his coat and withdrew a handkerchief. “This should do, if you don’t have one already.”

Unable to help it, the corners of Ben’s mouth quirked sheepishly. “Well, heaven forbid that I become predictable,” he agreed. Not making any effort to undermine said predictability, he set down the bottle and leaned towards her when she had a seat. “Am I to be given a hint for this visit? Because as charming as you are, you have a certain look to your eye whenever you’re plotting...”
Well, perhaps not plotting, per se, but the sparkle to Thera’s gaze was almost mischievous as she seated herself alongside him. Hearing her query, Ben decided to tease her further. “Oh, dear,” he remarked. “A libraria.n without her b.ooks? That is a little scandalous. Fortunately for you, I’m a never-ending catch-all for both the men’s admiration and cruel jokes.”
Crooking a finger, he rose and moved over toward his cot, then knelt down to pull out a crate from under his bed. “Take your pick,” he encouraged, “though I’d highly exercise caution when sifting through the drawings. This isn’t exactly...s.cholarly material.”

Ben smiled, placing his straight razor back into its wooden box. "I'm holding a sharp implement, and yet you really want to test my patience with jokes?"
The warmth in his tone belied any true threat, and once he tucked his soap back inside his valise, he felt Thera's arms come around his middle and he hesitated, only to promptly melt back into her touch with a hum. "I could say your 'God-given cuteness' allows you to get away with quite a bit, as well," he countered. "But just what you're getting away with, I won't say -- not unless I want to keep enabling you, of course."
Chuckling, he reached down and squeezed her hands on his waist, then turned toward her with a simper, edging their foreheads together with a brush of their noses. "Does my 'God-given cuteness' grant me a kiss this morning, or have I already ruined my chances?"
