I think I got too lost trying to make my mysteries setting unique. The Hotel is a hassle, there’s too many hoops everyone’s gotta jump through to access the mysteries. I’m overwhelming myself and not having fun.

Maybe I just… let them be detectives. Give them a nice medium sized city sandbox to run around in.

Maybe Myrtle herself isn’t a detective, but her grandfather was, and after he retired he opened up a…. Restaurant? Pawnshop? I want her to have some tie to the local station but not too close? I like the idea of her sort of being the lunch lady, maybe she has a contract to drop off lunch for the lads, and inevitably get dragged in for her opinion because the captain/chief/whatever was her grandfathers old partner and

That tickles me

So if she inherited the local police watering hole, maybe just down the street, that would put her in proximity, and between the captain being a sort of surrogate uncle and now dating Bertram who is a constable trying to make detective, that would get her roped in to helping solve things.

Winnie I think is mischevious enough she would make a fun Pawn-Shop proprietress.

Jonathan would a good coroner, that’s right up his weird awkward loner alley

I think I do want Henry to be a street kid, like, this little ball of sunshine cinnamon roll right up to the second it inflicts max emotional damage to remind you he’s really not…

* ROXY MORTON : META .001 : THE BASICS .

born roxanne eleanor morton, to bertram “ bertie ” and winifred “ winnie ” morton in windsor, berkshire county, england. roxy used to insist on being referred to as roxanne until she was ten, since it made her feel grown up. her grandfather was the only person who ever refused, though he didn’t call her roxy, either --- she was always his little bunny, much to her mortification. 

the youngest of two daughters, she was constantly in competition with her older sister, penelope, though she often wished to be rid of the distance between them. there was never any part of her that enjoyed their parents pitting them against each other, and she was robbed of any satisfaction that might come with even the slightest of victories. penny, in contrast, revelled in the challenge, though she grew resentful the more skilled and capable roxy became. 

she was a champion equestrian in her youth, at the urging of her mother, though her accomplishments never seemed to earn her any praise from either of her parents, and she refused to continue with the sport when she stopped finding joy in it. caring for her horse, bonney, was soothing for roxy, and she found companionship in the animal she was otherwise lacking at home. bonney was more of a friend to her than anyone else for twelve years, before bertram sold her. 

unbeknown to her, roxy’s strict and unrelenting flood of lessons during her childhood and formative years were training for the kingsman recruitment process. she’d learn this from her uncle, alistair, when he informed her that he had nominated her as a potential candidate for the position of lancelot, and that he operated under the codename percival. she hides her relation to percival as a way of staving off the customary accusations of nepotism, regardless of the fact that most of the male cohort she’s grouped in with are only there because of their fathers.

roxy names her poodle cordelia after her favourite nanny as a child; the woman was more of a mother to her than her own ever was, and roxy was devastated when her mother dismissed her. she’s always suspected that winifred had acted out of petty jealousy, and she seeks cordelia out later in life --- the two of them remain in contact, meeting for tea once a month, or as often as roxy’s schedule allows. 

she’s known she was a lesbian since she was twelve years old, though she’s never officially come out to her parents or sister, to save the family from any scandal it might cause. her uncle was the first person she ever told, and the person she sought out for advice and support, given his similar proclivities. 

eggsy was one of the first real friends she’d ever made; the girls at her boarding school had all been callous, shallow, and cold at best, and unbearably cruel at their worst, and she’d formed uneasy alliances, rather than friendships.

Found an old cache of Arcadian Nights story notes with Jonathan cast as the painter that make a perfect overarching/foreshadowing plot so I guess we’re back to that. For today.

But having him be the painter makes the main investigative trio Myrtle, Bertie, and then either Winnie or Henry or alternating, and opens up a lot of page time for those friendships, which I really like. I never wanted the love triangle to be the main focus of the series. Henry and Winnie can fill the role of poking holes in Bertram’s worldview just as well as Jonathan could have…

It makes Winnie’s blackmail item easy and straightforward; Eleanor threatens to tattle to the Owners a fired staff member of one of their partners/patrons is stalking his family—not only would she lose her livelihood, but also access to Jonathan.

Also Winnie’s having been Jonathan’s family’s maid throws a particularly vicious emotional twist on one of my series climax scenes; their eyes meeting across the room and Winnie making the choice to save Myrtle instead of him. Which I also really like.
